It's interesting to me that people had a problem with his laughter. Personally I found it comforting and charming. I felt it was coming from a very Zen attitude of looking at a very dark subject and accepting it. Not resisting but in a way saying yes, the circumstances are ugly but ultimately no matter what happems, its going to be all right. Even if the world ends in a way that's ok too. And I'm of the opinion that this attitude is important, especially when dealing with such heavy darkness. We need a comforting voice to ease us into these conversations and deep self analysis, otherwise it can be unbearable and we'll avoid it and perpetuate the problem. I can't help but feel that those who took issue with his laughter, simply aren't ready for the message.

People are uncomfortable with someone who is happy and positive. It is the same with me when I see someone too nice at work but I have to be due to the nature of my work as security. The presumptions of people are the roots of it. .exe not work when they see this guy very happy. Personally I thought he is just a happy guy. I did feel he is slightly off on that one but I have seen worse.

I love the intensity of Master Roshi. That discerning, piercing stare and then the jolly laughter. I see why some people feel uncomfortable when presented with him. But then, isn't that the point? I wonder if the vitriolic comments he mentioned, were merely a projection by those who rallied against the fact that he made them feel uncomfortable . It seems that is the biggest crime one can commit these days!

Well I took your lead and read the comments. God it's so hard reading a sea of polarised love hate perspectives that so many hold to be ultimate truths. Cheers mate, really, a great way to end my year :)

It seemed to me to be the realization of self awareness..then laughter at the ego poking itself out like a belligerent kid..

Doshin seems much more genuine in this second interview. I think he has learned from the comments on the last one. He may have lost site of his reflection because I imagine he is mostly only interacting with students who either revere or fear him. It confirms that no matter who one is (or who one thinks they are) one never stops learning. He has grown and is a better person for having interacted with you on this medium (David). I think that is why he is so grateful. We are grateful for good lessons we are able to learn from. Interesting guy. I think he is right in where this cultural war is going. There is some insane ideological shit going on. I agree with Doshin and lament that it can only end very badly or with the appearance of a common enemy or disaster. Great channel. Subbed.

    • @darkmaitri

There are workshops?! You all are probably in CA. I am in the Seattle area. I have been practicing "true spirituality" for quite some time now. In 1996 my partner and I moved to Boulder, CO to study at the Naropa Institute. We took refuge vows about a year later. We eventually moved back home to the Puget Sound. For a while there was a chapter of the Boulder sangha here, that we could participate in, turn to, and practice with. But graduate school, a new relationship, life, and soon it was years since I'd been in contact with the Boulder sangha or the Dharma Dhatu an executive branch. I went to reconnect with my sangha and they were no longer there. Seattle has been quite overtaken by a certain kind of energy/personage that has been known as "upwardly mobile" at times. So, do you [or anyone reading this] know of any sangha that is doing this kind of shadow work, what I think of as 'practice', around Seattle here? I so much desire to have that again. I am not new to practice, but I still need others to give me a vision of myself to work with, in addition I just would like friends who are also practitioners. Than you ver much.

There’s a strange and intricate dance between awakening and deeper understanding that Doshin points to. Jack Kornfield once said, ‘what do you get when a cannibal wakes up? An awake cannibal’. The 18th century Zen Master Torei talks about the path of Rinzai Zen as one where there’s a most expedient rush to awaken. Then after awakening a life long practice of exploration and purification of the defilements of ego. In our not so patient culture we want both immediately. Very hard to awaken while chasing every shadow and very hard to explore and purify shadows while not awakened. I could more accurately replace the ‘we’ with ‘I’ when describing this conundrum. Yet having seen enough of the darker nature of my relative self I cannot stop and just keep muddling my way along. Teachers like Doshin have been very helpful.

i watched the first interview on the 12th of september and i rewatched it again the next morning before work.
Doshin talked about what he sees coming and how we don't even understand, then you asked what he saw and he said " I would rather not say", i know what he was doing by that response and even though i knew, that in itself did scare me. That entire interview rung in my head so loud that i found myself looking at my own shadow, i felt that i had nobody to blame other than myself for the things that happen in my waking life, i have never felt so centered and corned by my own self and facing the ugliness that is myself, confronting my own shadow blew my fucking mind! i have never felt so defeated in a victorious way just by a little push into the shallow end lol, i could not do it for long though, but it seems to be a good start.
to see oneself from another perspective has placed me in a healthy confusion, and i am okay with that.

Interesting that people picked up on the laugh. Quite some time ago, I was made aware of my irritating laugh, which had until then been an unconscious habit, mostly to avoid feeling pain. The most authentic laughter is when you laugh with others at appropriate times, but not at others. Playing with emotion to illustrate a point is fine if people know that this is what you are doing, but acting, rather than feeling emotions has to come across as inauthentic.

Thank you guys for the video. A Question developed throughout listening to the conversation about "projections" and "shadow-work". In my meditation practice this also is a repetitive pattern of questions coming up. Not sure how precise i can be, but i´ll try my best.
When i observe some "behavior X" a lot of things happen inside of me. judgements, decernments, descriptions, feelings, body sensations etc. . After this cascade of "things" have went on (if one can say they really come to an and), sometimes i come to sort of a conclusion (because that's what it is often all about in real life. Make decisions and try to commit somehow and find a path that feels (not thinks) more authentic and whole).
But how would i make the difference between:
    1. i´ve just walked again in one of my sophisticated "shadowtraps" that make me think im so brilliant and right in my observation but im just caught in my own glory-film again that is actually a shadow part. Because this is actually the characteristic of this kind of shadow, right? Your thoughts, the inner story and identifications in this story say: "hey your a quite reflected guy and this behavior X is not very highly developed, you should do something against it".
    AND
    2. My observation/ decernment comes from a more "heart formed/ heart based" place that can actually "see" more clearly what is going on here.
Is it just the feeling of clear observation without the agitation Doshin Roshi speaks about in the Trump-example, or are there any other measurements of some sort of "inner compass" that suggest a clear heart and mind.
Its this question of: which inner voice should one listen to if there are many projections around.
My own feeling is, that the bodily sensations of a clear mind are very different. calm, compassionate, holding, graceful etc. but still not sure...
In other words: Is Anger or agitation always a sign of "shadow activation" or is there some sort of "wise anger".
I would be delighted about some options.
Thanks for your work and the interview.

Very interesting to hear you guys even talk about those reactions, because I noticed them myself ....and even without reading the comments, I thought "this is really going to piss some people off". I really think it is some kind of Dunning-Kruger-Effect in which the person projects it's own insecurity or lack of wisdom on to you, because they can't imagine someone being that secure and reflected without faking it. Oh I loved the laughter so much ! But then I am of an age that if you asked me what’s the first word that comes to mind if I say, ‘Men’ , I will say, ‘Fun’. My father , uncles , brothers and friends were such great guys, hard working, honest and hilarious.

Allow your laughter to resonate through the trees of the forest monk. You have toiled long and quite hard to liberate yourself from the illusion of this reality. All you have left is your laughter and the freedom from the clutches of the mind. Focus on the light within your mind’s eye and laugh away releasing whatever little is left of your attachment to Maya. Do not listen to the masses. You already have the divine sound of spirit resonating within you. That high-pitched sound inside your head that accompanies you in the darkest of all nights. Keep laughing and loudly as the roar of your spirit will resonate way beyond the upper planes all the way to the Godhead. Thanks for your sacrifice and devotion. You help in the effort to bring truth.

Doshin has the best laughter and love his sense of humour. I suspect a lot of projection onto Jordan by his followers who see him as a father figure.

By the way. I think we could all agree, but i can only speak for myself, that more information about how to do shadow work is essential for everyone. The details of shadow work aren’t clear yet, in any video i have seen from any channel. I would definitely appreciate more detailed info about how to integrate shadows! I’ve done shadow work, and it works, but still feel there’s something i am not ‘getting’ yet. thanks!

I liked Doshin's interviews. Although I did find his delivery a bit theatrical in the previous one. I feel the same way about Steven Hayes, creator of ACT Therapy. Great ideas, but I'm not so keen on his showmanship. Perhaps it's a tone which works on TV, but seems out-of-place online. A bit like the strange way newsreaders speak.
