Do a bit of reading around Zen Buddhism and then try to answer the question of ‘who am I?’, rather than taking the statement at face value and thus missing its profound philosophical significance.
I am a Buddhist and have known many Buddhists, some of whom I consider wise, some deluded. And of those I consider wise I can't imagine any of them saying 'nobody else sees what I see'.
Not sure what this guy did to qualify for all this shade thrown on him. He seems pretty happy and enjoying the interaction. At the same time he is communicating a bedrock dysfunctionalism in our society in somewhat plain words. My best guess is that people read “Zen master” and have a slew of preconceived notions possibly formed by yoda or something. No one noticed he put air quotes around “Zen master” when referring to himself. I will say that shows me he is not a narcissist as alleged.
He seems like a charlatan of sorts. The air quotes to me simply show that he as at least subconsciously aware of being one and perhaps his choice of attire shows he is consciously buying into this Japanese samurai style of zen master,.. widely known to be the kind of thing a charlatan would do to express "authenticity".
Detailing Shed I don’t think he is really claiming anything. He is just teaching. That is how Zen works. It is just information and idea. If it connects great, if not no problem. Move along to something else. I think perhaps Christians who are used to claims and not ideas would project charlatanism onto those who teach other than their own worldview.
@@cincilitigator5108 Well, in the very least he has claimed that he sees things other don't and then says he would rather not talk about it. One or two times he seemed a bit lost after the interviewers' comments. I'm not sure, I wouldn't outright call him a charlatan, it's just my perception that he comes across that way a bit. Also, I think teaching is great when done properly & from responsible people, but when the wrong teachers are given undeserved credibility it becomes dangerous - we can only hope it doesn't connect. Again this is just my perception, I don't trust him the same way I would trust the interviewer. He seems to talk in circles, dodge being direct or sugarcoat,. I'm not sure what it is. He's clearly someone who has endured substantial pain, I'm just not so sure he has moved on.
Detailing Shed the interviewer who is cogent is asking questions of him for a reason. There is obviously some respect but asking and answering questions are different matters. Of course in answering you risk being wrong whereas when you ask you don’t have that potential liability. My guess is that the title “Zen master” has conditioned you so that you are expecting a profound revelation in every syllable. When that does not materialize guy ascribe a sense of dishonesty to the man. With respect to paragraph 2 above I would say the ideas themselves have the power not the speaker so the credibility of them is self evident and we can get off this never ending merry go round of trying to comprehend another person’s worth.
I love Jordan, he is a very eloquent intellectual and he pours his whole heart into his research and delivery. His teachings are not convoluted, they are clear, succinct and comprehensible.
He is the most morose man I have had the displeasure of listening too. And the man is a prescription junkie, which may go to understand why is so fucking miserable.... so ?? 🤷
My favourite is when Petersen talks about how women would be happier to just be pretty and quiet. Barefoot and pregnant. Peterson and his ilk are what grows out of the push against independent women breaking through the BS and realizing that we need to be like men if we want equality. Patriarchy is pushing back against feminism. There will be many waves, it will get ugly. Economic independence for women will save society.

I don’t think there is anything wrong with acknowledging a label others have given you. At the end he points out he has not “mastered zen” even if that is a title given him. Point being we all start somewhere and the work is never done in this lifetime.

The Zen is realizing that everything you discussed is nonsense and jibberish until the nature and extent of consciousness can be explained to the very last detail. It makes ZERO sense to make proclamations about there being an afterlife and a soul when one first cannot even define what consciousness is. These two fools in the video are known as educated idiots.

I watch lots of videos with similar interviews about shadow work.... but this interview is mind blowing!!!! It is packed with great amount of information. At 21 min when talking about culture that lives in lie, that part is essential. I see people, including myself, strangled by inability to truly express ourself. And somewhere along the way loosing complete trust and ability to know who we really are. Thank you for posting this video.

It is such a pleasure to hear a person with such deep knowledge speak about the illusion of the ego, the pseudo-spirituality and rampant narcissism of the postmodern ideology, and how true collective enlightenment can only be achieved through analysis of our dark individual selves. I’d like to say something about the masculine/feminine dichotomy and the confusion it causes. It’’s heart rending to see women that have switched off their femininity to work in worlds created by men (politics, finance, business), and just as bad, to see men struggling to know how to express their masculinity without fear. My view is very laden with my South American/English mixed heritage, for sure. For me as a woman, the worst aspect of how I have experienced masculine power in my life has been control. I have to take responsibility for having let that control get out of control (in abusive relationships), but the loss of energy and creativity that control engenders, is massive. It takes very strong people to be comfortable with the other having control of his/her “stuff” within any relationship, there has to be a very open negotiation before and during any relationship, a constant dialogue (narcissistic individuals cannot do this, an increasing problem). Also it has to be seen that male/female energy is not necessarily resident in male/female form, I’m thinking of Bill and Hilary Clinton, Bill empathic, listening, Hilary, strategic, analytic. We have to think more about complementing each other instead of agonizing over our sex, or warping our sexual power by looking at the media, this is the real threat, a huge distraction and destabilizing force. Very interesting interview indeed. What stroke me particularly is your remark on collective shadow rising up form the cracks open by new media that has been kept closed by old fashion broadcasting media and our cultural schemes. Doshon said then, that we need to cope with it as a culture to.. survive. Living in the part of Europe that I live in, you always have in mind your options of survival in case politics goes wrong. I've been discussing the issue of society in hard times with few friends some time ago. The conversation started from a prepper perspective. We agreed that the attitude towards it by most of people would be to act alone or wihtin close family. In previous wars and conflicts people were surviving as a collective, guided by high standards of Christianity and what I call societal code of honor. We had the feeling that code is gone... People just feel so separated from each other. In case of a survival who would be a natural leader locally - who would be willing to hear him and sacrifice his/his family goods for the wider good? Priests do not have the trust they used to have before. Local governments either. Will we turn to the old "stronger wins" scheme? What a progress from shimpansees! ;) When you see the amount of poison creeping out form social media - the comments under this partcular video are no exception; it is astonishing how much of a shadow (plus tones of meaningless texting) is leaking out of our society members. The polarisation is growing and it penetrates various levels of daily live - from politics, to media, school programmes to ordinary chats within families and between friends. What's fueling it and how to stop it happening? Wouldn't be nice to return to the roots of the Jesus's teachings - love your neighbour as you love yourself? I do not mean religion - just the teaching. Love may be too high of a demand for modern human, but respect is a good starting pint, isn't it? ;)
If society really collapses for longer, there will be quite some chaos and violence which will culminate in chieftains concentrating power again. There may be places where the dip after collapse will be less problematic of course. But generally I would not expect that possible putting resources together will be voluntarily. Most of preppers I can imagine to be preparing for rather smaller event where civilization has collapsed but withdrew for a short while. I hope we will not get to see who is right tho.
@@hanskloss7726 I think you're right in terms of current attitude. IN previous wars and hard times - numerous upraisings and wars, people were acting different. 1st they were much more independent form technology and self-sufficient (in the rural communities at least). 2nd there was a strong attitude of helping each other, that was the core of Christian teaching very vital in XIX and beginning of XX century. It was still there during 2nd World War, where people were risking their lives to save Jewish neighbors - Germans put that as "crime" punishable by death of a WHOLE family here in Poland. Honestly I can't imagine the risk of going for it. There were naturally bad examples, but there were banned and panlized with by the Underground State (people revealing Jews were killed by default). People had very strong feeling of common fatherland, that was thought in schools and present in the code of honour. I am afraid that attitude in society is now long gone. The idea of fatherland is being ridiculed, people calling themselves patriots are named fascists. Media are doing great job of polarising people in various ways. The politics became a game in good old fashion Roman spirit to keep people busy with rubbish instead of asking difficult questions. Coming back to Jung's ideas about shadow as a built-in part of personality and society, look how much of it is coming out in social media. It is astonishing. Doshon is IMO right - when we don't cope with it at the highest levels of societal thinking and teaching, we will be literally lost - in times of prosperity and in hard strike of a survival situation. The glue making us society is less and less strong and thinning. If we are sailing towards a common planetary common wealth, the skipper course goes through making nations fade into a big uniform society, what will guarantee the high quality of govenrment? We have had a brutal examples of idea-driven societies in 3rd Reich and USSR. USSR built in theory on the rules of equality ended up in tyranny of Lenin, Stalin and harsh governing of their followers. Fanatic believe in Ideas is dangerous - followers assume that the reality should catch up with the utopia. It would not be that dangerous if we could only debate about it freely and widely - as long it is not the case the odds are dark and tension raises.
@@arwawer Only government can guarantee high quality of government. We peasants can just from time to time threaten with pitchforks but that is all. You refer to Christianity - I think that is only one religion. I am sure my Muslim neighbours will be holding together much stronger than the remaining society but this too can depend on other factors. How far has destruction gone and what are chances for recovery of state power, how big city one lives and how multikulti the society is, makes a difference too. I would argue that in times of great external pressure I would be more likely seeking cooperation with fellow believers. Language barrier plays a role too - in places where that is a hard barrier we can foresee violence between competing groups. As for the social cohesion - there are always moves one or other direction. We currently slowed down slightly on the way to a global village. I suppose there are local communities that hold together and others that are just bunch of strangers. This will ever be there as this is how humans operate. It is also indeed first time that big parts of the world are so interconnected that parts of economy just dissolve if you stop trade completely. The society is more stable this way as it is almost unimaginable that the trade can stop but anther Currington like event and we are done at least for a while. 70ya people had supplies at home. Today I hardly have anything. Although I started thinking about getting some after I read about what my gov. is doing with electricity supply systems. Big things are beyond our control. A web of helpers is a good thing in any situation.
@@hanskloss7726 Well, I did not mean Christianity as a religion itself, but rather as a provider of a code to respect others - all of them. Religion in hard time does not matter, as long it is not exclusive - I mean as long it does not exclude not-believers from the same level of quality. I think personally the teaching (not religion) of Jesus is not exclusive and in fact goes beyond tribal approaches of some religions, dividing people to: us (treated fairly as equal members of society ) and them - unbelievers, who are treated as lesser kind of people. Well, that tribal traditions are old and it would be nice if they would evolve to catch up into "modern" egalitarian concepts, but odd for it to happen are not that good, at least not in our lifetime. ;)
One thing that can be common of people who wish to influence people beyond the strength of their ideas is the use of a whispering voice and low tone. A lot of what he said opens up boxes but I'm not fully trusting his intentions. Another alert for me is when he states words to the effect that he knows the truth, that others don't quite have it and then won't state what it is. This doesn't seem any different from the style of any charismatic theological leader who's intent is to gather followers. I'll take what I think is useful but I'm cautious.
It could be that there is no cost to you in sitting back and seeing what he does next. I could be wrong, but think that a cult would quickly reject me for my tendency to blurt the thoughts that strike me as the truth, or maybe murder me, depending on the cult. I have wondered if I could be brainwashed after thinking I had a religious experience after watching the TV series "Kung Fu," but it still seems unlikely. Sometimes the best thing to do is nothing.

@@athousandIQ I'd say JP does what all Talk Therapists do - make people, particularly young men, think for themselves in order to clean up their act by first telling them to "clean up their room." Most young males today are not graduating college, are direction-less and really need a father figure to guide them. The Zen Master said Narcissism is exploding. I've heard two psychologists express similar thoughts; one said Narcissistic Personality Disorder is a pandemic, while the other, who has worked worldwide, says NPD is an epidemic. The Narcissism is a cover for their low sense of self-worth. It's rooted in early child abuse and neglect. Higher divorce rates, broken homes, and like Elton John sang, "In the end, nobody wins, and it's the innocent who pay when broken dreams get in the way."
A decent thought. However, prescriptions can still be presented in another format. In fact Peterson does do this, in every piece of advice he gives to young men on what to do in their day to day lives. Ideas dont exist in a vacuum, and I doubt Peterson's prescriptions to the questions posed are uninformed by his perception of the dysfunction. Actually they have to be, he is obsessed with coherence, as he should be.

This guy speaks Truth. A great interviewer as well whom has obviously done good personal work. If you stand in judgment of his laugh or manner of delivery, equating it to egoic indulgence, I trust there is a mirror in your bathroom you are able to reflect in. Doshin Nelson Roshi reminds me of the Roshi of the Rinzai Zen community I used to be a part of (only left because the practices were becoming more like a chore than something I hungered for). Didn't get a creepy vibe at all, but I can understand why some might feel that way. It's not easy having your own shit reflected back at you, especially if you'd rather not deal with it.

6:20 - actually Jordan frequently says that the post modernists got lots of things very right - most importantly that there is in fact no canonical way of interpreting a text or the world. An unbelievably important and potentially shattering discovery. In a sense, his whole project is offering a way out of that mire, given its truth. Having actually built the hardware of the internet, I have to say we felt the potential of the technology to lead us into a "new Age". Now to see it unfolding is awesome. I see only the labor pains and smell the fear. What we have gestated and how it will manifest is fluid. We stand looking into the abyss with our backs to the cliff. A bridge can be seen at our feet receding into the veil, what lies below is shrouded in fog. I feel the fear of falling that must be overcome. Collectively we will either take the steps to start the journey into the unknown or fall into the abyss. Either path leads to the future.
Any journey is begun with a first step. Groups do not take individual steps. You can only change the world by changing within. Then you hope your example spreads.

If you percieve the truth as your truth it is no longer the truth but your own view of reality tainted by your own biases and memories. The truth must stand seperate from you entierly, only then will it be the truth. Following a dogma is not all bad, there are absolute rules and laws in the natural world that we cannot erase, such as gravity. Other such laws exist in human nature and there are certain things about humans that you will never be able to change, such as irrationality. So instead of spinning our tires in the mud trying to escape these truths we instead create a dogma around them in order to prosper under the laws of nature.
I don't disagree, i'm just saying each person has his own truth since you can not separate the ego from the persons viewpoint, so each person see's the truth in his own way no matter what. I don't think you understood what i meant. I was talking specifically about dogmatic views of people that follow certain religions and sects and such. If he was a journalist or psychiatrist I would have no problem with this, but he is a zen master...And when asked what he sees, he says “I’d rather not say (interject his non compassionate laughing)”. Then eludes later to complete destruction of the world. “People fighting with sticks and stones”. As long as he argues about the illusion and predicts only the dire isn’t he is a part of it? Shouldn’t an elder sit in patience for the rest of the world to grow mentally and spiritually.....and be a place people come to when they are ready to hear? Why not answer? Why elude to it but not be straight. It’s like the people he complained about that are prejudice but not owning it. I know this type of zen master is taught to expect a death on the battlefield at any moment. Perhaps this is the undertone I feel doesn’t serve the modern collective. Don’t get me wrong, death shouldn’t be feared and needs to be accepted with peace, but the average person hasn’t done that. Perhaps because I “spotted”so much, I have lots of work to do in being a master. I’m open to that. I do believe we can all easily overcome our shadows. That there is great hope for the collective and that people here to challenge others would bless the collective to do so with grace. If grace is a feminine energy perhaps we all need more of it!

So it still remains that our existence is not perfect. Therefore human are still left to enter into discussion and to make decision in this way.This Zen master claims that nobodies been telling the truth, and that's the truth. So the same problem still remain,why the hell should we have reason to believe him then? This is the problem with this idea of gaining answer, from "something greater than ourselves" . We still require to "use ourselves", so as to supposedly gain access to this so called "greater knowledge" . At the end of the day we will still need to place faith and trust, in a human No real way of escaping it is there. Never is Therefore this whole argument seems baseless. Like splitting hairs. Make me wonder if its just that wannabe guru, are perhaps more so feeling afraid that their own position of power, might be fading?.

I think there's room for different people to worry about different things at different times. Perhaps you could start your own path to becoming a integral thinker and, when you feel you are close, decide to worry about those issues you are so concerned about, or maybe about others as you see them then
I saw this as a reflection of the audience with whom he is speaking. He is teaching to an audience that has attached to the truth of the destructive elements Peterson sees. He adds to the perspective of Peterson, moving to more a integral perspective with the very gentle pivot to Wilber and a "slightly more evolved" perspective (his words). Is recognition of the present danger in PC-Authoritarianism a denial of dominance hierarchy, unchecked greed, inhumanity/cruelty and environmental degradation? Could this be a necessary recognition of the collateral damage we except or ignore in pursuit of our all-important truths (shadow work)? Peterson sees the shadow of P-M green culture, the P-M folks see the shadow of Peterson's position. Neither sees their own shit. Just consider the possibility that "regressive dominance hierarchy, unchecked greed, inhumanity/cruelty, and environmental degradation " are the collateral damage that has been excepted or ignored (not intended) by societies pursuing their own "noble truths" - like : love and protection of own culture, economic growth and security, personal responsibility, technological advancement .... on and on... The opposite sins are at least as destructive and we do not need to accept them as the medicine for the damage caused by myopic orange. In fact we must not, in his opinion, because the consequences may apparently be more dramatic. Is this guy regressive orange or part of the emergence of yellow?

It’s weird that he says he sees things and then won’t share them. Perhaps he thinks people will misunderstand or it is too painful to bear, but then why say that you have the knowledge?
What he sees is like having an Alien encounter. You have met an Alien, but there is no way to show him to the others because he left after the encounter. Would you talk about the Alien to ordinary people, without being able to show him, a conclusive evidence to support your argument??? Of course not! You would be considered nuts!!!
I'm sure Jordan Petersen has compassion for them. But I think he intuitively feels that the ONLY way to get some message to them is to be fatherly (not grandfatherly). Sometimes you need a 'kick in the butt'. You need to be told "Enough of this nonsense, get your act together"...
I agree with that. It might very well be that Jordan Peterson would think that seeing as how intelligent he is. Pluss, a father figure is far more confrontational and I believe that is what is needed.
Gotta know your audience and what the situation calls for. Dictators don't respond to niceties and will respect you even less if that's your tactic. Also, some of the ancient Zen Masters would physically hit, swat and beat students out of complacency.

Nice interview! My belief we are similar to moving plants. Our environment plays a critical role into how we perceive the world and how we act on our perception. The best type of peace is inner peace. The best way to change the world is to look within. With that said I will continue to look within and continue do my best to be my best 👍
Clifford Starks you are welcome. I haven't listened to the clip yet but Peterson is an interesting man. I have not come across any commentators who delve into Carl Jung in any meaningful way and I think jung has much value. I also like alan watts ( plenty on TH-cam) who has an appreciation of physics and spirituality. We live in strange times with much change. We need to nourish our minds and spirits with care as we would our bodies with food in the event of illness and infection. I wish you well
Jordan has demonstrated great deals of compassion.... taking on the world is not the responsibility you should be onsetting to another person.. I too have been drawn to Jung, Cambell, Eliade. I am on the same path. But my main source is the bible. when this guy says he'd rather not say where this all is leading us, I totally understand. but the bible has a lot to say about this very thing. deep divisions within families and the lack of love in general will increase dramatically, which in turn divides the very self that we rely on for perception. feed this into an insecure and restless global stage, and I think the rest may be self evident
Think in terms of action / reaction. That is how civilization works, much like the homeostasis in your body. We will keep separating until we become so separate that we realize how separate we are, and start connecting intentionally, on purpose, in stead of out of tradition or norm.
Edward I agree. This is why I believe I found his insight somewhat terrifying. Although my knowledge into Jumg1 and others is extremely limited, I have studied the holy scriptures deeply since my early childhood. When he speaks about what he sees, yet doesn't reveal it, makes me think of The Great Tribulation and ultimately Armageddon. We cannot fathom what is to come. "Everything else is an illusion". We know the system or matrix, is constructed and controled by satan and a realm of spiritual entities that we are at war with. If it isn't for God shortening the last days , all flesh would be wiped off the planet by evil.
Peterson is amazing, yet I agree with this master when he says Peterson sees it but doesn't really see it. Peterson has said in numerous times when he's asked if he believes in God, that he acts as if God exists. But he never answers the question directly. I get the sense that he avoids deep spiritual truth seeking instead finds the psychological reasoning and value behind the Bible and it's stories and archetypes.
People complain about the Zen masters laughter. I kinda like it cause I really think he is laughing about himself and things that crop in his mind. Watch it again and see what he could find it funny. Maybe its my sense of humour but I saw my self giggling at his second meanings and laughter. Giggles...
Reminds me of the Dalai Lama when he laughs while addressing an audience, or answering questions. It just warms your heart because it is pure light, touching the light within you without judgement or ego or agenda. It heals. :)
15:00 I brag about my (nearly) unlimited access to my trillion dollar library of all the greatest thought in recorded history to everyone I know, most of whom somehow didn't seem to get the same memo that I got. What did _they_ get instead? For many of them, an invitation to a permanent front-row seat at a pan-galactic shouting match. We seem to enter the same building through the same door, but our experience on the inside is worlds apart.
Idk he seemed like a relatively nice genuine chap to me, even if a just a tiny bit smug with all the philosophical insight he has accumulated but hey that's something really kind of hard to avoid... especially considering his upbringing... I feel bad that the nuns beat him :/ And that he isn't at all interested in the possibility of transcendental realities and soul such as they are presented in the Veda-scriptures for example.
I see a few people in the comments questioning the authenticity of this Zen Master's belief in what he's saying. I noticed, because I also questioned this authenticity. This thought nags me too. But, I still think whether authentic or not, everyone has things to teach. "If you spot it, you got it." Am I authentic all of the time? Sometimes, I have an important message to deliver. But I don't "feel it." That doesn't mean the message is B.S. So, in the end, I can conclude anything I want about what goes on in this Zen Master's heart and mind. But, that doesn't change the fact that I can either learn from the best parts or shut down, just because I believe he's not "feeling it." He may even have a sinister agenda. Still, that doesn't change the fact that I can use my own heart and mind to take whatever intellectual nutrients are available and synthesize them for good. I doubt he has a sinister agenda. The strongest of thoughts that came to me was 'maybe he just doesn't have all the answers.' Still he could admit that right? I don't know if that would do any good. Isn't that something all of us know anyway? To constantly say, I don't know, would detract from actually getting somewhere. "If you spot it you got it." I don't have all the answers. The evolution of consciousness. Shadow work. Digging in the dirt. This involves the central questions that lie at the crossroads of the self versus the collective. Questions like: 1) Who am I / Who are we? 2) What am I / What are we? 3) Who am I / What are we *_becoming?_* 4) What *_can_* we become? 5) What do we *_want_* to become? 6) Is there any such thing as objective truth? Civilizations rise and fall on the answers to these questions (and others) - or on the failure to answer them. I keep thinking of the Fermi Paradox, and of so-called Great Filters. It's proposed that there may be technological / social / etc. reasons why other civilizations out there among the stars might not make it past a certain developmental bottleneck, and that any such bottleneck represents a Great Filter to civilizations advancing to the degree that we might detect them out there. They might die out, or destroy themselves. This explanation is offered to reconcile the fact that (so far, at least) we haven't seen any evidence of a single other civilization out there. I'm becoming increasingly convinced that we are now facing our own Great Filter. But it's not one single thing; one element only. It's a confluence of them. And I'm convinced that if such Great Filters do indeed 'knock out' intelligent species, they do so in concert; not just one Filter, but several. Technological advancement, social & political change, our effect on other creatures & on the environment in general - all these (and more) have reached nexus points, both individually & together. And underlying it all is this set of questions involving who & what we are, what we can be or want to be, the nature of truth & our relationship to it, and our obligation to it, to ourselves, & to each other. Is it the end of an epoch in human history? Is it a transition from one state of consciousness to another? Is this Childhood's End? Whatever it is (or winds up becoming), it's quite visceral. We are feeling it in our guts, in our bones. I'm reminded of Frank Herbert's Dune series of books. Perhaps that's fitting, as a new Dune movie (one of two covering the first book) comes out soon. In his fourth entry, "God Emperor of Dune", Herbert has the title character making the following journal entry: "*_Odd as it may seem, great struggles such as the one you can see emerging from my journals are not always visible to the participants. Much depends on what people dream in the secrecy of their hearts. I have always been as concerned with the shaping of dreams as with the shaping of actions. Between the lines of my journals is the struggle with humankind's view of itself - a sweaty contest where motives from our darkest past can well up out of an unconscious reservoir and become events with which we not only must live but contend. It is the hydra-headed monster which always attacks from your blind side. Jung is intense. I'm halfway through the archetypes and collective unconscious and he has literally rewired my understanding of how I think. I was a devout Christian for 20 years and I realized that religion is an identity. It only exists as a concept within our ego that we use for practical purposes, but ultimately it leads to an over-identification that consequentially gives rise to nationalism and tribalism. It's not us vs them. We are all in this together. I urge you to explore the archetypes that are used to communicate this through stories. Moana, the star wars sequels (7-9), and the matrix are some good starting points. This lesson is being communicated, but we are too ignorant to understand. We need to start with education, so that people are smart enough to comprehend what is truly being said.

I will just say that Christianity, like most religions, has profound depth if you have eyes to see and ears to hear and you don't follow the blind (which is tragically rare). I learn from many religions including Jediism, but I don't form my identity around my membership in them. If you are liking Carl Jung on religion, I highly suggest you check out the Red Book by Jung. It is one of the most profound books I have ever read, and I have spent over a year so far on just the first 300 pages. Anyway... Namaste fellow traveler of the path. May the Force be with you 🙏

Disney failed us big-time with it but I think theyre going to take it to the next level with Mandalorian. That being said, the sequels explore the idea of the force more deeply and they had multiple savior archetypes, one being a villain which is analogous to vader in the first set of films, but enhancing it through the idea of his values being reincarnated in Kylo Ren. it also explores that the morality is not divided between good and evil, but that good and evil both exist together and there must be a balance. I think burning the ancient Jedi texts was the most powerful scene in any star wars film this far.

I love this guy. Period. I have been involved in the people business for over 30 years and the last 15 as a behavioral analyst and profiler. This guy exudes authentic selflessness and honesty. Love his thinking. Spot on.
I liked this more and more as it went on. So maybe the next step is to move on from the watching, liking, commenting, through the internet. Maybe some of us who clearly connect on these ideas, share perspectives, and knowledge sets, could actually support each other in the process directly. Could idealogical collectives of people who find each other connected through the information avaliable on the internet actually live collectively in the real world? Maybe we could solve real problems, help each other develop, support each other through modern cultures challenges. But it is encouraging that at least we are sharing and connecting around the ideas. I wonder what it would be like if we could interact and collaborate with each other on a regular basis in person, instead of just imagining it, or discussing it.
None of this guy's metaphors land for me. I get his references, I know his namedrops, and I hear his words (much easier at 1.5x), but he leaves me feeling empty, and not in a Zen way. If one can master Zen, then his interests would be far beyond this level of pettiness, concerned not with the words, but the ways in which the words will alter the state of the outcome. This is called being patient and calm, nothing more, nothing less, full of metaphors and anecdotes. Master is not a word that should be used here, there’s logic here, but the lines a blurred.

Do a bit of reading around Zen Buddhism and then try to answer the question of ‘who am I?’, rather than taking the statement at face value and thus missing its profound philosophical significance.
I am a Buddhist and have known many Buddhists, some of whom I consider wise, some deluded. And of those I consider wise I can't imagine any of them saying 'nobody else sees what I see'.
I think perhaps he meant that we are all such one-of-a-kind individuals in a specific time and place, that no one else 'sees what I see'

Not sure what this guy did to qualify for all this shade thrown on him. He seems pretty happy and enjoying the interaction. At the same time he is communicating a bedrock dysfunctionalism in our society in somewhat plain words. My best guess is that people read “Zen master” and have a slew of preconceived notions possibly formed by yoda or something. No one noticed he put air quotes around “Zen master” when referring to himself. I will say that shows me he is not a narcissist as alleged.
Hollywood, anime and Japanese samurai movies have placed a certain image of what a Zen master looks like in people's heads.
He seems like a charlatan of sorts. The air quotes to me simply show that he as at least subconsciously aware of being one and perhaps his choice of attire shows he is consciously buying into this Japanese samurai style of zen master,.. widely known to be the kind of thing a charlatan would do to express "authenticity".
Detailing Shed I don’t think he is really claiming anything. He is just teaching. That is how Zen works. It is just information and idea. If it connects great, if not no problem. Move along to something else. I think perhaps Christians who are used to claims and not ideas would project charlatanism onto those who teach other than their own worldview.

One or two times he seemed a bit lost after the interviewers' comments. I'm not sure, I wouldn't outright call him a charlatan, it's just my perception that he comes across that way a bit.
Also, I think teaching is great when done properly & from responsible people, but when the wrong teachers are given undeserved credibility it becomes dangerous - we can only hope it doesn't connect.
Again this is just my perception, I don't trust him the same way I would trust the interviewer. He seems to talk in circles, dodge being direct or sugarcoat,. I'm not sure what it is. He's clearly someone who has endured substantial pain, I'm just not so sure he has moved on.
Detailing Shed the interviewer who is cogent is asking questions of him for a reason. There is obviously some respect but asking and answering questions are different matters. Of course in answering you risk being wrong whereas when you ask you don’t have that potential liability. My guess is that the title “Zen master” has conditioned you so that you are expecting a profound revelation in every syllable. When that does not materialize guy ascribe a sense of dishonesty to the man. With respect to paragraph 2 above I would say the ideas themselves have the power not the speaker so the credibility of them is self evident and we can get off this never ending merry go round of trying to comprehend another person’s worth.

I don’t think there is anything wrong with acknowledging a label others have given you. At the end he points out he has not “mastered zen” even if that is a title given him. Point being we all start somewhere and the work is never done in this lifetime.

I watch lots of videos with similar interviews about shadow work.... but this interview is mind blowing!!!! It is packed with great amount of information. At 21 min when talking about culture that lives in lie, that part is essential. I see people, including myself, strangled by inability to truly express ourself. And somewhere along the way loosing complete trust and ability to know who we really are. Thank you for posting this video.

What can you tell us about this guy?
I’d like to say something about the masculine/feminine dichotomy and the confusion it causes. It’’s heart rending to see women that have switched off their femininity to work in worlds created by men (politics, finance, business), and just as bad, to see men struggling to know how to express their masculinity without fear. My view is very laden with my South American/English mixed heritage, for sure. For me as a woman, the worst aspect of how I have experienced masculine power in my life has been control. I have to take responsibility for having let that control get out of control (in abusive relationships), but the loss of energy and creativity that control engenders, is massive. It takes very strong people to be comfortable with the other having control of his/her “stuff” within any relationship, there has to be a very open negotiation before and during any relationship, a constant dialogue (narcissistic individuals cannot do this, an increasing problem). Also it has to be seen that male/female energy is not necessarily resident in male/female form, I’m thinking of Bill and Hilary Clinton, Bill empathic, listening, Hilary, strategic, analytic. We have to think more about complementing each other instead of agonizing over our sex, or warping our sexual power by looking at the media, this is the real threat, a huge distraction and destabilizing force. Very interesting interview indeed. What stroke me particularly is your remark on collective shadow rising up form the cracks open by new media that has been kept closed by old fashion broadcasting media and our cultural schemes. Doshon said then, that we need to cope with it as a culture to.. survive. Living in the part of Europe that I live in, you always have in mind your options of survival in case politics goes wrong. I've been discussing the issue of society in hard times with few friends some time ago. The conversation started from a prepper perspective. We agreed that the attitude towards it by most of people would be to act alone or wihtin close family. In previous wars and conflicts people were surviving as a collective, guided by high standards of Christianity and what I call societal code of honor. We had the feeling that code is gone... People just feel so separated from each other. In case of a survival who would be a natural leader locally - who would be willing to hear him and sacrifice his/his family goods for the wider good? Priests do not have the trust they used to have before. Local governments either. Will we turn to the old "stronger wins" scheme? What a progress from shimpansees! ;) When you see the amount of poison creeping out form social media - the comments under this partcular video are no exception; it is astonishing how much of a shadow (plus tones of meaningless texting) is leaking out of our society members. The polarisation is growing and it penetrates various levels of daily live - from politics, to media, school programmes to ordinary chats within families and between friends. What's fueling it and how to stop it happening? Wouldn't be nice to return to the roots of the Jesus's teachings - love your neighbour as you love yourself? I do not mean religion - just the teaching. Love may be too high of a demand for modern human, but respect is a good starting pint, isn't it? ;)
If society really collapses for longer, there will be quite some chaos and violence which will culminate in chieftains concentrating power again. There may be places where the dip after collapse will be less problematic of course. But generally I would not expect that possible putting resources together will be voluntarily.
Most of preppers I can imagine to be preparing for rather smaller event where civilization has collapsed but withdrew for a short while.
I hope we will not get to see who is right tho.
@@hanskloss7726 I think you're right in terms of current attitude. IN previous wars and hard times - numerous upraisings and wars, people were acting different. 1st they were much more independent form technology and self-sufficient (in the rural communities at least). 2nd there was a strong attitude of helping each other, that was the core of Christian teaching very vital in XIX and beginning of XX century. It was still there during 2nd World War, where people were risking their lives to save Jewish neighbors - Germans put that as "crime" punishable by death of a WHOLE family here in Poland. Honestly I can't imagine the risk of going for it. There were naturally bad examples, but there were banned and panlized with by the Underground State (people revealing Jews were killed by default). People had very strong feeling of common fatherland, that was thought in schools and present in the code of honour. I am afraid that attitude in society is now long gone. The idea of fatherland is being ridiculed, people calling themselves patriots are named fascists. Media are doing great job of polarising people in various ways. The politics became a game in good old fashion Roman spirit to keep people busy with rubbish instead of asking difficult questions. Coming back to Jung's ideas about shadow as a built-in part of personality and society, look how much of it is coming out in social media. It is astonishing. Doshon is IMO right - when we don't cope with it at the highest levels of societal thinking and teaching, we will be literally lost - in times of prosperity and in hard strike of a survival situation. The glue making us society is less and less strong and thinning. If we are sailing towards a common planetary common wealth, the skipper course goes through making nations fade into a big uniform society, what will guarantee the high quality of govenrment? We have had a brutal examples of idea-driven societies in 3rd Reich and USSR. USSR built in theory on the rules of equality ended up in tyranny of Lenin, Stalin and harsh governing of their followers. Fanatic believe in Ideas is dangerous - followers assume that the reality should catch up with the utopia. It would not be that dangerous if we could only debate about it freely and widely - as long it is not the case the odds are dark and tension raises.

You refer to Christianity - I think that is only one religion. I am sure my Muslim neighbours will be holding together much stronger than the remaining society but this too can depend on other factors. How far has destruction gone and what are chances for recovery of state power, how big city one lives and how multikulti the society is, makes a difference too.
I would argue that in times of great external pressure I would be more likely seeking cooperation with fellow believers. Language barrier plays a role too - in places where that is a hard barrier we can foresee violence between competing groups.
As for the social cohesion - there are always moves one or other direction. We currently slowed down slightly on the way to a global village. I suppose there are local communities that hold together and others that are just bunch of strangers. This will ever be there as this is how humans operate.
It is also indeed first time that big parts of the world are so interconnected that parts of economy just dissolve if you stop trade completely. The society is more stable this way as it is almost unimaginable that the trade can stop but anther Currington like event and we are done at least for a while.

Big things are beyond our control. A web of helpers is a good thing in any situation.

Religion in hard time does not matter, as long it is not exclusive - I mean as long it does not exclude not-believers from the same level of quality. I think personally the teaching (not religion) of Jesus is not exclusive and in fact goes beyond tribal approaches of some religions, dividing people to: us (treated fairly as equal members of society ) and them - unbelievers, who are treated as lesser kind of people. Well, that tribal traditions are old and it would be nice if they would evolve to catch up into "modern" egalitarian concepts, but odd for it to happen are not that good, at least not in our lifetime. ;)

One thing that can be common of people who wish to influence people beyond the strength of their ideas is the use of a whispering voice and low tone. A lot of what he said opens up boxes but I'm not fully trusting his intentions. Another alert for me is when he states words to the effect that he knows the truth, that others don't quite have it and then won't state what it is. This doesn't seem any different from the style of any charismatic theological leader who's intent is to gather followers. I'll take what I think is useful but I'm cautious.
It could be that there is no cost to you in sitting back and seeing what he does next. I could be wrong, but think that a cult would quickly reject me for my tendency to blurt the thoughts that strike me as the truth, or maybe murder me, depending on the cult. I have wondered if I could be brainwashed after thinking I had a religious experience after watching the TV series "Kung Fu," but it still seems unlikely. Sometimes the best thing to do is nothing.

Doshin Nelson Roshi reminds me of the Roshi of the Rinzai Zen community I used to be a part of (only left because the practices were becoming more like a chore than something I hungered for). Having actually built the hardware of the internet, I have to say we felt the potential of the technology to lead us into a "new Age". Now to see it unfolding is awesome. I see only the labor pains and smell the fear. What we have gestated and how it will manifest is fluid. We stand looking into the abyss with our backs to the cliff. A bridge can be seen at our feet receding into the veil, what lies below is shrouded in fog. I feel the fear of falling that must be overcome. Collectively we will either take the steps to start the journey into the unknown or fall into the abyss. Either path leads to the future.

If you percieve the truth as your truth it is no longer the truth but your own view of reality tainted by your own biases and memories. The truth must stand seperate from you entierly, only then will it be the truth. Following a dogma is not all bad, there are absolute rules and laws in the natural world that we cannot erase, such as gravity. Other such laws exist in human nature and there are certain things about humans that you will never be able to change, such as irrationality. So instead of spinning our tires in the mud trying to escape these truths we instead create a dogma around them in order to prosper under the laws of nature.
By following the laws of nature, by living in symbiosis with the truth we embrace it.

He said... “No one sees what I see”!????!!! (Well, no one sees what someone else sees, but as a master I can’t imagine his teachers would agree with him saying that he is the only one that sees and Jordan Peterson only gets whiffs of it). If he was a journalist or psychiatrist I would have no problem with this, but he is a zen master...And when asked what he sees, he says “I’d rather not say (interject his non compassionate laughing)”. Then eludes later to complete destruction of the world. “People fighting with sticks and stones”. As long as he argues about the illusion and predicts only the dire isn’t he is a part of it? Shouldn’t an elder sit in patience for the rest of the world to grow mentally and spiritually.....and be a place people come to when they are ready to hear? Why not answer? Why elude to it but not be straight. It’s like the people he complained about that are prejudice but not owning it. I know this type of zen master is taught to expect a death on the battlefield at any moment. Perhaps this is the undertone I feel doesn’t serve the modern collective. Don’t get me wrong, death shouldn’t be feared and needs to be accepted with peace, but the average person hasn’t done that. Perhaps because I “spotted”so much, I have lots of work to do in being a master. I’m open to that. I do believe we can all easily overcome our shadows. That there is great hope for the collective and that people here to challenge others would bless the collective to do so with grace. If grace is a feminine energy perhaps we all need more of it!

I hear performative contradictions and overgeneralizations in his communication too. This is a common challenge, for all of us human beings, whether 'post-modern,' 'Integral' or whatever. I wish Integral Thinkers would express as much upset with regressive dominance hierarchy, unchecked greed, inhumanity/cruelty, and environmental degradation as they do about the problems with 'post-modernism.' I think there's room for different people to worry about different things at different times. Perhaps you could start your own path to becoming a integral thinker and, when you feel you are close, decide to worry about those issues you are so concerned about, or maybe about others as you see them then

I saw this as a reflection of the audience with whom he is speaking. He is teaching to an audience that has attached to the truth of the destructive elements Peterson sees. He adds to the perspective of Peterson, moving to more a integral perspective with the very gentle pivot to Wilber and a "slightly more evolved" perspective (his words).
Is recognition of the present danger in PC-Authoritarianism a denial of dominance hierarchy, unchecked greed, inhumanity/cruelty and environmental degradation? Could this be a necessary recognition of the collateral damage we except or ignore in pursuit of our all-important truths (shadow work)? Peterson sees the shadow of P-M green culture, the P-M folks see the shadow of Peterson's position. Neither sees their own shit.

Nice interview! My belief we are similar to moving plants. Our environment plays a critical role into how we perceive the world and how we act on our perception. I have not come across any commentators who delve into Carl Jung in any meaningful way and I think jung has much value. I also like alan watts ( plenty on TH-cam) who has an appreciation of physics and spirituality. We live in strange times with much change. We need to nourish our minds and spirits with care as we would our bodies with food in the event of illness and infection. I wish you well

I too have been drawn to Jung, Cambell, Eliade. I am on the same path. But my main source is the bible. when this guy says he'd rather not say where this all is leading us, I totally understand. but the bible has a lot to say about this very thing. deep divisions within families and the lack of love in general will increase dramatically, which in turn divides the very self that we rely on for perception. feed this into an insecure and restless global stage, and I think the rest may be self evident
Think in terms of action / reaction. That is how civilization works, much like the homeostasis in your body. We will keep separating until we become so separate that we realize how separate we are, and start connecting intentionally, on purpose, in stead of out of tradition or norm.

Edward I agree. This is why I believe I found his insight somewhat terrifying. Although my knowledge into Jumg1 and others is extremely limited, I have studied the holy scriptures deeply since my early childhood.
When he speaks about what he sees, yet doesn't reveal it, makes me think of The Great Tribulation and ultimately Armageddon. We cannot fathom what is to come.

Peterson is amazing, yet I agree with this master when he says Peterson sees it but doesn't really see it. Peterson has said in numerous times when he's asked if he believes in God, that he acts as if God exists. But he never answers the question directly. I get the sense that he avoids deep spiritual truth seeking instead finds the psychological reasoning and value behind the Bible and it's stories and archetypes.
I love this channel, so much eye opening material here.

I noticed, because I also questioned this authenticity. This thought nags me too. But, I still think whether authentic or not, everyone has things to teach.

Am I authentic all of the time? Sometimes, I have an important message to deliver. But I don't "feel it." That doesn't mean the message is B.S.
So, in the end, I can conclude anything I want about what goes on in this Zen Master's heart and mind. But, that doesn't change the fact that I can either learn from the best parts or shut down, just because I believe he's not "feeling it."
He may even have a sinister agenda. Still, that doesn't change the fact that I can use my own heart and mind to take whatever intellectual nutrients are available and synthesize them for good.

The evolution of consciousness. Shadow work. Digging in the dirt. This involves the central questions that lie at the crossroads of the self versus the collective. Questions like: 1) Who am I / Who are we? 2) What am I / What are we? 3) Who am I / What are we *_becoming?_* 4) What *_can_* we become? 5) What do we *_want_* to become? 6) Is there any such thing as objective truth? Civilizations rise and fall on the answers to these questions (and others) - or on the failure to answer them. I keep thinking of the Fermi Paradox, and of so-called Great Filters. It's proposed that there may be technological / social / etc. reasons why other civilizations out there among the stars might not make it past a certain developmental bottleneck, and that any such bottleneck represents a Great Filter to civilizations advancing to the degree that we might detect them out there. They might die out, or destroy themselves. This explanation is offered to reconcile the fact that (so far, at least) we haven't seen any evidence of a single other civilization out there. I'm becoming increasingly convinced that we are now facing our own Great Filter. But it's not one single thing; one element only. It's a confluence of them. And I'm convinced that if such Great Filters do indeed 'knock out' intelligent species, they do so in concert; not just one Filter, but several. Technological advancement, social & political change, our effect on other creatures & on the environment in general - all these (and more) have reached nexus points, both individually & together. And underlying it all is this set of questions involving who & what we are, what we can be or want to be, the nature of truth & our relationship to it, and our obligation to it, to ourselves, & to each other. Is it the end of an epoch in human history? Is it a transition from one state of consciousness to another? Is this Childhood's End? Whatever it is (or winds up becoming), it's quite visceral. We are feeling it in our guts, in our bones. I'm reminded of Frank Herbert's Dune series of books. Perhaps that's fitting, as a new Dune movie (one of two covering the first book) comes out soon. In his fourth entry, "God Emperor of Dune", Herbert has the title character making the following journal entry: "*_Odd as it may seem, great struggles such as the one you can see emerging from my journals are not always visible to the participants. Much depends on what people dream in the secrecy of their hearts. I have always been as concerned with the shaping of dreams as with the shaping of actions. Between the lines of my journals is the struggle with humankind's view of itself - a sweaty contest where motives from our darkest past can well up out of an unconscious reservoir and become events with which we not only must live but contend. It is the hydra-headed monster which always attacks from your blind side. Jung is intense. I'm halfway through the archetypes and collective unconscious and he has literally rewired my understanding of how I think. I was a devout Christian for 20 years and I realized that religion is an identity. It only exists as a concept within our ego that we use for practical purposes, but ultimately it leads to an over-identification that consequentially gives rise to nationalism and tribalism. It's not us vs them. We are all in this together.
I urge you to explore the archetypes that are used to communicate this through stories. Moana, the star wars sequels (7-9), and the matrix are some good starting points. This lesson is being communicated, but we are too ignorant to understand. We need to start with education, so that people are smart enough to comprehend what is truly being said.

I will just say that Christianity, like most religions, has profound depth if you have eyes to see and ears to hear and you don't follow the blind (which is tragically rare). I learn from many religions including Jediism, but I don't form my identity around my membership in them. If you are liking Carl Jung on religion, I highly suggest you check out the Red Book by Jung. It is one of the most profound books I have ever read, and I have spent over a year so far on just the first 300 pages. Anyway... Namaste fellow traveler of the path. May the Force be with you 🙏

That being said, the sequels explore the idea of the force more deeply and they had multiple savior archetypes, one being a villain which is analogous to vader in the first set of films, but enhancing it through the idea of his values being reincarnated in Kylo Ren. it also explores that the morality is not divided between good and evil, but that good and evil both exist together and there must be a balance. I think burning the ancient Jedi texts was the most powerful scene in any star wars film this far.

I love this guy. Period. I have been involved in the people business for over 30 years and the last 15 as a behavioral analyst and profiler. This guy exudes authentic selflessness and honesty. Love his thinking. Spot on.
I liked this more and more as it went on. So maybe the next step is to move on from the watching, liking, commenting, through the internet. Maybe some of us who clearly connect on these ideas, share perspectives, and knowledge sets, could actually support each other in the process directly. Could idealogical collectives of people who find each other connected through the information avaliable on the internet actually live collectively in the real world? Maybe we could solve real problems, help each other develop, support each other through modern cultures challenges. But it is encouraging that at least we are sharing and connecting around the ideas. I wonder what it would be like if we could interact and collaborate with each other on a regular basis in person, instead of just imagining it, or discussing it.

None of this guy's metaphors land for me. I get his references, I know his namedrops, and I hear his words (much easier at 1.5x), but he leaves me feeling empty, and not in a Zen way.
