- Tonight I'm taking a look at the legend Johnny Winter, this time his slide playing is in action! Johnny was playing as good as ever right until he moved on. Age changes, class is permanent!

another great review of the great Johnny Winter. At this point in Johnny's career he had suffered two strokes and endless drug rehabs. His best days were behind him but what a great last few years when he was helped by Paul Nelson to get back on track. Thanx for giving him his dues as he sure paid his. really luving your channel and your ears for observations to detail.-peace

Johnny was still standing back in '92 when he did '61 at the Bob Dylan Tribute. Probably the highlight of the show. He smoked it. Johnny kept after Anton Figg to play faster and Steve Cropper looked like he had never seen anything like it. RIP Johnny. Check it out it's on here.

I have watched this video 100 times. I love the winks and smiles the band is sharing, Derek looking over Johnny's shoulder and his huge smile when the number ends. A thrill for him I am sure. Much respect shown.

I saw him play live once in Louisville, Ky more than 20 years ago. It was in a fairly small room at a place known as Jim Porter's Good Time Emporium. It was just Johnny and a bass player. Needless to say, they lit the place up. Fantastic performance.
I have great memories of riding around with my dad in his old Ford pickup listening to Johnny Winter albums, he is a huge fan and his love for Johnny's music really rubbed off on me. We were both deeply saddened by his recent passing, dad had been to see him once at the Cats Cradle in Carboro N.C. and was lucky enough to meet him and move some equipment with his crew. I had always hoped I'd get the chance to meet him as well but that chance never came.
Dad said Johnny was a very cool and polite guy in person but he was already going blind when he met him. When dad and his friend walked up to the tour bus after the show and asked to speak with Johnny the crew initially told them that Johnny didn't meet with people after shows, however they changed their minds and let them on the bus after dad and his friend started helping them move equipment.

I was fortunate enough to bring my sixteen year old guitar playing daughter to see Johnny Winter play in Albany, New York six months before he died. I had seen him a few times)
Age was not just a number at that point but damn we are both so happy to have seen that show! For my daughter to see one of the greatest guitarists ever is in no way diminished by the fact that he wasn't at his best at that point of his career.
If you want a guaranteed lump in your throat, watch the bio piece, "Down and Dirty". There's a scene with Johnny opening a Christmas present of an empty medicine capsule... whereby his friends/bandmates announce that over many months, he has been secretly weened off methadone. One of the most genius, loving, and kindest acts ever conceived. Johnny asks in a stunned voice "What have I been taking??" "NOTHING!" comes the reply. A highlight almost as fantastic as the guitar playing itself and gave us more years of it.
The studio recording of this song on his 2nd album is fabulous. He was a much better guitarist when he was younger, especially with the slide. R.I.P. Johnny. One of my all time favorite guitarist 😎

The live version on "Captured Live" is my fav, it's so much more 'alive'. Plus, the guitar combo of Johnny and Floyd Radford was the guitar best duo of his career, much better than that with Rick D. in my opinion. Just to add though, Floyd wasn't really needed for Hwy. 61, only Johnny was needed for that song, Floyd or anyone else could just sit that one out and have a smoke.

You made my night in the way in which you broke down the musical talents of Johnny Winter, his technique and he was one of the best slide players there has ever been! Him and Stevie Ray Vaughan are two of my favorite blues guitarist ever, great video.

Johnny was right up there with Hendrix. People went to his concerts just to hear him play because he was such a master.
Thanks again for shining the light on our Johnny. This was so wonderful to see this performance because it was no secret that he had a lot of issues going on and the 90s were not the best. This was the first sign he was back (thanks to Paul Nelson) & those of us that had the pleasure of seeing him in his last years got to see a wonderful bluesman brought back to the spotlight. It was so cool to be there 10 feet away from him watching those fingers fly. The respect you see on this video continued with all the special guitarists who were so happy to contribute to his last two albums it was sad he wasn't around to receive that Grammy Award. By the way if you have a chance check out the Biography"Raisin' Cane: The Wild and Raucous Johnny Winter Story" It sheds a real light on the complex man behind the guitar. Keep up the great reactions...

I've seen JW playing that old Firebird 7 or 8 times over the years. Met him in the Atlanta airport July 4, 1969. He was the best - really nice guy and great performer! RIP brother Johnny.

Imo, Johnny was one of the best! I saw him once and wished that I would have seen him many more times! I've listened to his music for over 40 years. I'd love to live long enough to listen for 40 more! He made slide playing look easy! It's not...I know, I try. I love his guitar and would love some day to recreate one like it with a little bit of relic to make it look like his. I could listen and talk about him all night! A great musician for sure! Like you said, I think he played just for the love of the music!👍😎🎸🎶

Some of my finer memories in life was watching him bring the roof down at a small concert theater in Detroit called Harpos in the 80s. Johnny Winter, his brother Edgar, Frank Marino, and Robin Trower from 20 feet away. How I wished someone had recorded those shows. The motor city rocker crowd in attendance made the place vibrate for encores, Johnny did several but Marino did like 8 everytime. Awesome memories.

Saw Johnny live in Southampton 2010 with my father when I was 17. He had to be helped out onto the stage and sat down a stool, he apologized that he wouldn't be singing that night because of a sore throat . . . then he ripppppped it for an hour plus straight.

This was such a great performance late in his career, after illness and addiction he pulled a classic out of his arsenal. What I love most about this is how much the other players are virtually pinching themselves-huge smiles. His slides were made from mic stand metal tubing, fit his pinky just right apparently. Great review Fil.

I have this on DVD. It is Eric Clapton's Crossroads Guitar Festival. What a great cover of a Bob Dylan song. I saw Johnny Winter once live. He autographed my concert ticket, though I could not meet him. I saw Derek Trucks twice live. I met his wife Susan. I also got their autographs. May Johnny Winter rest in peace. I have a request. Can you do an analysis video on Steve Winwood, who is a great guitarist, as well as being a great multi-instrumentalist and singer/songwriter.

I saw Johnny about 1989 at a little bar in Baltimore called Hammerjacks. It was the best live show I've ever seen. After the opening act ended and their gear removed from the stage, the house lights went down. Johnny's first note sent chills down my spine. His entire show was fantastic. Glad I convinced my friends to go. They thanked me for it too.

I saw him.several times live in his prime. The best, most dynamically powerful performance was in November 1971 at the Carolina Coliseum in Columbia, SC. Johnny was playing with his best band lineup of his career. It included Rick Derringer, Randy Jo Hobbs and the incredible drummer called Bobby Caldwell. Johnny's backing band had previously had hits in their group called " The McCoys." Their biggest hit was "Hang On Sloopy." Johnny called this lineup "Johnny Winter And." Opening for them that night was the entire original lineup of The Allman Brothers! Duane Allman (instrumental in making Derek And The Dominoes a legendary album for Eric Clapton) was incredible as well. Duane passed away in a motorcycle accident 10 months after that performance.
I think he is playing his 1964 firebird,the man is a guitar legend!

He and Edgar are from Beaumont, Texas - where the first big oil gusher in the world burst through in 1901. After that the Beaumont soil spit out enormous talent in a 20 mile radius. Harry James, The Big Bopper, George Jones, Barbara Lynn, Gatemouth Brown, Larry Graham, Janis Joplin, UGK, and many more!

Love the slide! The first time I saw Derek Trucks was in my hometown of Belleville, On Canada when he was only 13 years old. Well on his way to becoming a great guitarist even back then. Saw him years later with Clapton and they traded riffs back and forth all night! Love the video... sorry for the long reply!

Johnny played a blistering version of this at Bob Dylan's 30th-anniversary concert (1992). He kept motioning to the band to speed it up! It was killer. Or massive, as Fil might say ;)

and yes, the bass player humbled and enjoying the moment , as he knows, he has made his way onto a stage and is five feet away from absolute greatness..one of the best there ever was, and ,as the greats always do, he is ,yet, once again, amazing even the bassman backing him.The bass man grins in awe of his own position in all this,and ceases the moment...good man.

What I find the most telling about this video is this, obviously, every member of this band at this gig is fully in tune with the greatness they are a part of...also, your face, and your expressions, as you listen and watch Johnny, tell me the same story..

I ask one question to them
" when you play, do they all turn and listen? "

If you don't have something to say, that people want to listen to, put it down, till you do.

Gotta tell this story. Johnny played a small venue in Cincinnati many years ago. Standing in the front row about 20 feet from him. He came out and said nothing to the audience, but said to the band keep up. He played mostly rock and roll. At one point he seemed to go into a trance, threw his head back and I've never seen more blazing speed. It was mesmerizing. Simply insane.

Being just the right age, Johnny and Edgar featured strongly in my University days. Simply sublime, and of course it got better with age although sadly Johnny is no longer with us. I think the mark of a musician is that the new maestros, such as Derek Trucks, both recognised his skills and wanted to be on stage with him. It doesn't get better than that.

Johnny Winter is underappreciated. I had the privilege of working backstage @ both Stevie Ray Vaughn and then Johnny Winter, in Memphis. These shows were probably a week apart. I was absolutely blown away by SRV, but the next week hearing Johnny Winter made me realize how unappreciated Johnny was. I mean... he played with as much soul as a guitar player can. SRV doesn't outclass him. Johnny Winter was great

He was so smooth at playing. I saw him at a gig just before he died. He was walked out to a folding chair and all he did was slide but he was smooth even with his old age, he's still a legend.

So glad I got to see him; it was toward the end, but at Smith's Old Bar in Atlanta, small venue, got to shake his hand. Saw Denny Wally there too.
As Robert Gelinas stated below Johnny went thru so much in his life. The Drugs took their toll but what slowed him down in his later years was when he fell down the stairs in his house and broke his hip. A few years later he had paralysis in his left hand which sidelined his playing. It took a few years to over come. He stated that he had to practice continuing to get his hand back to playing form. Winter had his own unique style and look. Long Live The Music Of Johnny Winter!!!

And how many 70 year olds still have strong voice like Johnny . He had such a great rock and roll and blues voice as well as being blessed with extrodinary guitar skils. . He actually saw himself more as an Entertainer , than just a guitar player .. as it says in his book "Raisin Cain"

Johnny's playing on Highway 61 Revisited on the live album in 76 just takes you away, high octane for 40 minutes.. Fantastic bass on that album too. Rock n' roll people, as one of the tracks is called!

Saw Johnny play at the Allman Bros. 40th anniversary in NYC. They carried him out, put him at the edge of the stage. He played a blistering song or two, then they carried him off again. Amazing. He WAS the music he played.

i've always dug his straight picking over his slide stuff but he was as good as it got with a slide. deeply regimented in all blues styles, he was recording songs as early as 16 years old. when he was 18 he sat in with BB king and BB loved him and gave him a lot of encouragement. later, at the age of 23, thanks to a glowing rolling stone review of a reporter who caught his act live, columbia records picked him up and gave him (for the time) a very lucrative contract.

Great video :) It's also great to hear your comments on this. I'm an old sod and have been playing since the wheel was invented and it bugs me how so many young players don't appreciate the old-timers. You get it and that's really refreshing :) I've always believed that each generation should learn from the last and then take it somewhere new. In a time of million miles an hour shredders, it's great to hear an "old" master totally kick butt with half a dozen notes but TONS of feel.

Its good to see johnnie rockin even at this age and i guess he had some health problems, sounds like he still has his edge and after doing it all of his life but after what 60 years of guitar rip Johnnie winter we miss you .

It was probably JW, who finally helped me to become a fan of blues. At first I tried several times, but somehow I always got annoyed of his "throat roaring" singing voice and quit. But then suddenly it didn't matter and I had to listen his music whole summer in my car audio. RIP Johnny Winter -the real craftsman till the end.

Mr. Winter had a unique style and sound with his early Blues influence from East Texas. A true master. R.I.P Mr. Winter.
Saw Johnny in Oslo just before his "rehab" dont remember year. He had a support stand behind him witch he leaned on, could not stand on his own. One of his crew come on stage and put different guitars on him, he could not do it himself. He played a half of a second behind the band almost all the concert. The band was solid as a rock and saved it from disaster. As I recall he sort of wake up the couple of the last songs and was as brilliant as he can be. Weird experience for sure.
