hi Fil. that was some playing by all those guys, drummer on top form too.Joe Bonamassa has the style that appeals to me more than Satriani or Vai. it's not how many 'notes per second' someone can play but the 'notes with feeling' they can play and Joe knows how to do it so it sounds more realistic than a musical fluidity extravaganza. he does a great session on 'Lazy' - Deep Purple too. peace man

Pretty much everyone loves Joe Bonamassa but if you ask them why, they either don’t know or can’t tell you. Or something very vague like, He’s really Good. It just makes so much more sense when you hear it from a dedicated musician’s perspective. Plus, we can all see how very much you enjoyed doing this review, Fil. Rock! 🎸

I have seen numerous interviews with Joe. In his first band Bloodline, Roy Weisman, who is still Joe's manager today was the manager of the band Bloodline, hired a vocal coach to tutor each Bloodline member. The vocal coach told Weisman that Joe was the only member with any potential. Joe DID NOT sing in Bloodline. After Joe was kicked out of Bloodline, he took Roy Wiseman and set out on a solo career. As a solo artist, it was the pure necessity of needing a singer for his band that led him to singing because he never wanted to sing. I think it was nearly 10 years of rough singing before he got a vocal coach to teach him technique. If you go back into his early catalog of music, you can hear how relatively bad his vocals were because he was just being the unpaid lead singer. Long story short is that he could not afford a singer so he had to sing.

The thing is, from the point of time of this video, to the present time, the guy is improving. And working with Black Country Communion, is going to allow him to continue to improve. Once the performer has had opportunities to play in different styles, then there is even more improvement. I'd like to see him next do the Clapton thing and bring in another guitarist and share lead and rhythm, then he could really get some more experience.

Seen Joe in concert twice. Worth every penny! I discovered Joe on a radio podcast called Belly up for blues. I asked myself, "who in the fuck is this"? When he sang, "Stop". Comes to find out, Joe was a child prodigy. He opened up for BB King, when he was just 7 years old. He is soooo underrated, yet he's a guitar God! Can't say enough about Joe Bonammassa.

Thanks Fil, for letting me know you already did a Joe Bonamassa vid. I've seen him 3 times and went on his Blues Cruise where he played with Black Pistol Fire (check them out if you can). Every time he rocked the house. Joe reminds me of J. Garcia and the Grateful Dead in the sense he can take a 6 minute song and make it 16 minutes long simply by him doing his thing, albeit without the hallucinogens, lol.

Good analysis, and yet so many to choose from. Joe gets better every year. For those that say he is cold, for the life of me I don't know what it is you are (or aren't) hearing, and you have my condolences. Suggest analyzing his performance of Just Got Paid at the Hammersmith Apollo. Among the treats in that performance is his capturing the essence and tone of Page. Appreciate your work and the range of musicians you bring to our attention, or to remind us of how fortunate we are to plunder the treasure troves of performances available.

That's a decade old take on Joe. He's grown, but he's still a Blues player.
Pulls some pretty original licks out of that canon though.
He knows how to take you on a journey. Doesn't just wail for 9 minutes.
His voice has improved over time, but I still think it's a weak spot. He's not a natural singer.
    What do I know.
Had the pleasure of watching him play a few times when he was just a kid.
He grew up about an hour down the NY State thruway from where I was living at the time.
His Mom and Dad let me tape his first official headlining show at "The Beginning" in East Syracuse NY. 1984
He was 8, and he was good.
Not just good for an 8 year old. Scary good.
Make me want to put down my guitar and just give up kind of good.
    Still have the cassette.
His work with Beth Hart the past couple of years has been great.
    Here's a cover of Lucinda William's "Joy"
What Joe plays from 2:10 to 3:00 brings a huge smile to my face.
Not flashy, just tasty, tasty licks.
Little flourish at 2:55 ........ perfect

ursafan40 - I agree with you on Joe’s singing. It has improved with time, but it still sounds put-on to me. Joe felt that in order to make it as a solo artist, he had to also be the lead singer. In spite of his shortcomings as a vocalist, it certainly seems to have been the right move. Personally, I love the stuff he’s done with Jimmy Barnes - that’s a match made in heaven with Joe’s playing and Jimmy’s incredible, bluesy rock style! I love the Beth Hart stuff, too. She’s super-human and may be the most emotive singer I’ve ever heard. I just saw her with her band a few nights ago and will see her in a solo piano performance in September. Really excited for that! I don’t understand people who knock Joe’s guitar playing. It’s a ridiculous thing to do... maybe they’re just trolls, who knows? Anyway, I enjoyed your commentary on Joe. Have a good one, man!

Joe Bonamassa with Beth Hart has some amazing music for you to react if you haven't done so already. Beth Hart can sing the blues to perfection or any style of music to perfection. Beth Hart really brings out her soul in her singing that many people feel that little to no one shows in their performances when compared to Beth Hart.

I get on kicks where I listen to SRV for a month, then I'll get stuck on Tommy Emmanuel or Chet Atkins. I'm glad you mentioned Peter Green though. Just a suggestion-Look into a group called Marbin with guitarist Dani Rabin, Lesser known, more on a jazz fusion side , Dani also does a number of videos wherein he breaks down the techniques of various other guitarists from Jeff Beck to Alan Holdsworth. If you didn't do a video, it would be worth your while just to check 'em out. Would suggest Red Line or Israeli Jazz or his analysis of Alan Holdsworth's technique.

100% Agree with your comments about his vocals and by comparison to his singing today, the vocals in this video are just average. He has really matured as a singer in the last 10 years.

Absolute bravo for paying attention on vocals, finally someone who mention that.Clapton,Lukather,Kotzen, are easily one of the best singers overall, and nobody didn't say a word of praise, they should be on at the best vocals list, but no,Jim Morrison must be always on that kind of annual voted list,a bit hypocritical and ignorant voters by my oppinion, anyway, best regards

Joe is one of the few guitarists that is keeping the "Guitar hero" alive and well today. Sounds a lot like he listened to Gary Moore growing up! I got to see him once, and despite the fact he solo's almost to much, he is a great musician!

I just viewed "Stellar Performance, Joe Bonamassa 8/1 At The Greek Theater, Breaking Up Someones Home". Its very good. The intro is enough and its quite long (10 min and i was out then) but for someone who appreciates bends, vibrato and dynamics, this is good stuff!! Plays like Albert King enough to remind us of who's song this is but enough Joe B to put his stamp on it.
man, almost a 'back yard' gig for this (though he brings 'the good stuff' almost everywhere). I'm pretty sure that's no RI LP on his shoulder. I'd bet $5.00 that's a Burst (58,59,60).

Great vid Fil! Thanks. I always enjoy your analysis. When you have a chance, check out Bonamassa with Beth Hart performing "I'd Rather Go Blind" in Amsterdam. His transitions from finger picking to using his pick are super smooth, but the camera catches it pretty good. (look for "BETH & JOE-I'D RATHER GO BLIND-LIVE IN AMSTERDAM"). Thanks Again. Have a Great Day Man!
