That was me and my friends standing on the side of Avondale projects @ 2:10 born and raised! Thank you so much for sharing this video I'm literally in tears😢
Hi! That is so cool!! Wish I'd had the zoom on for you. This was early May 1987 on a visit about 20 years before I moved here. Glad you saw it. Peace to you too.
@@dumont57 you made so many people happy with your video. I was literally in tears looking at the video. I hope to see more of my childhood!! You rock💜💜💜💜

Thank you so much for uploading this..i remember going to the Christmas parade with my mom in the early 1970s..and in the late 80s it was my first big adventure with my new drivers license..in the 2010s it was one of my last views before leaving the USA. I miss the memories.
It’s crazy, I was born and raised in birmingham born in the 90s and left for college in 2012 and I can tell exactly where y’all are going. Y’all are coming from The east side/Avondale area into downtown. I recognized sloss
Bro I literally just stepped into a Time Machine they drove right past Avondale projects I waz born in 92 so I often think about the days before me and how things looked thank u for this a lot of this stuff is just now being torn down it’s almost sad
This sad wanna cry I miss those DayZ Birmingham was the place to be not only alot of stores and restaurants but it was always sum to do people was everywhere people stay at the parks and projects u could be coming from out of town and soon as you get close to Birmingham you could smell the Barbeque a mile away... But now it's like you can tell alot has happened to there over there years alot of important people died off businesses fails families either went down from drugs and seperations and sum moved away .......
I know what you mean. Sad that communities disappear. Everything changes or moves out & away from town to new places. Sometimes things come back, but better. There are some great new places & people here.
I was going to University right over there.Would have graduated the next month. Man o man those were the days. Thank you for the time machine if for just a short time.
Bob dobalina lol I remember that song.. I used to visit fam just outside Bham back in the day and surprisingly a few of the kids i would meet up with there were very up on music.. turned me on to the smiths and velvet underground even.. trip how life is
Back then Birmingham had more shopping center and restaurants then they do Now. Everything now is a ghost town in a lot of neighborhoods in Birmingham Alabama
Lets remember this was filmed probably with a camcorder, definitely wasn't filmed with a cell phone! Lol I was born & raised in Birmingham. I grew up north of the city in Fultondale but worked in Birmingham for many years. Good memories!
That's absolutely not the case. Downtown Birmingham is more vibrant and thriving now than it has been in 50+ years. It's had an amazing transition over the past decade.
@@sntemp i literally live here and was out last night. Avondale is not this downtown. I get what you’re saying. But no it’s not vibrant like this. It’s pocketed in different areas and still not as clean as this. Theres literally no shopping whatsoever on this strip like there was back then. You know it’s true
@@blueaeagle11 no I don’t know it’s true. Downtown in the 80’s wasn’t nice at all. Now we have fine dining and nice restaurants up and down 20th street, 1st and 2nd Ave north. We have a revitalized Lyric theater, a new city walk, 2 brand new stadiums, a big park, lots of brand new mixed use buildings, a lot of buildings that have been converted to nice lofts. Downtown Birmingham in the 80’s was not nearly as nice as it is today.
@@sntemp you do though. Sure there’s splashes of some nice new stuff but if you need to go buy something or you want to shop that day you’re going over the mountain and you know that as well. Sorry but your walking park and a couple breweries don’t have what you need. Just entertainment. Also charging ATL prices for Bham apartments is a joke. Back then it had a collection of everything. No need to go over the mountain. There’s still so many vacant stores down the theatre strip it’s sad. Some new things but downtown is still so far away from being “nice”
@@blueaeagle11 we’ll just have to disagree then b/c I lived just adjacent to Downtown and worked Downtown during this time period and it was a ghost town after 5pm and didn’t have anything close to what it offers now.

Those were in my response territory for 37 yrs.
Dear ole Birmingham. I’d just been born three months prior in this town. Thanks for the upload.
Born in 85 myself
My mom was 5 months pregnant w/ me when this was filmed😊

Thank you so much for this!!!!! Omgoodness I love it! I currently live downtown. So this is wonderful for me to see!
I always recognize 1st Avenue North. Wow, Greg's Cookies is now Bud's Best. They moved to a facility in Riverchase.

Have you been there lately. It’s definitely refurbished and more lively today
Seems like there's a lot going on downtown these days, especially with all the new high end apartments popping up.
I was just saying to myself what happened to all the stores and restaurants.
That's very sad. But some areas are coming back real nice. There's probably a great future here.
@@corneliushannah7454 Even the whole Brookwood Mall has closed! But many great restaurants have opened, plus parks & trails & more. 😊
There are several businesses along 1st ave N that no longer exist like Greg's Cookies, Army/Navy Store etc. Thanks for the video😊
The video's primitive, to be kind, but at least it's there! ;-) Glad you enjoyed. Thanks!
Drive through Birmingham AL, May 1987
Cool video, I wish I could find one with Huntsville.
I always wanted to go to Kiddieland over near the Birmingham Fairgrounds and BIR. Never got to go.
I grew up by 5 points west, I played & worked at the fair grounds as a kid, some of the best times of my life.
Thats too bad, it was a blast back then and the State Fair was always huge fun ...until Arrington.
Look exactly the same. Only difference are the cars & a lot of more businesses are opened.
Very interesting.
Born and raised
I lived across the street from Magnolia Park several years before this video.
