  • We spent the day with two men who are experiencing homelessness to see what it's like to survive on the streets in Knoxville. Here's what we learned.

I’m 29 and currently homeless here in the Bay Area of California. I work 3 jobs and I’m still about $150 short each month on rent so I sleep at a mall rn. It’s unacceptable that someone can have multiple jobs and can’t afford to live

This story is truly thought-provoking. Life can change so quickly, and sometimes even a small mistake can lead to serious consequences. It’s heartbreaking to see people who once had stable lives now struggling to survive on the streets. Hopefully, there will be better support programs to help people like Keith regain hope and rebuild their lives.

I'm sorry I don't understand why it's such an issue in the states.
I'm an American but I live in another country and we have homeless but it's not to the degree that I see in the states.
I don't know if it's because an Asian culture they will keep their family members with them no matter how destructive they are.
Possibly there's just a sense of community more than in the states
I have had American friends that were homeless up to 2 to 3 years but what they did was they stayed away from drugs alcohol and the bad things
They're Christians so they stayed in your churches and they tried to find organizations that could help them.
One of my friends she doesn't have to worry about being homeless anymore she's a single mom
My other friend he has an illness that's debilitating honestly there's no cure for his illness
He basically depends on the Lord weak by week
I have a Stress disorder so I knew when I graduated from college 20 years ago I couldn't stay in the states
I know I wouldn't be able to keep up physically with 40 to 80 hours a week thankfully my job took me overseas
I don't have much but I'm not homeless and I can put food on the table
I still have about $20,000 in student loans I'm paying back
I had to go into college so I can get out of my home environment
Every state and overseas said if I didn't have a college degree I couldn't get a job.
There were times where I could have gotten into drugs and alcohol but I asked Jesus to help me deal with the horrible intense desires that were consuming me
Might I suggest inner healing and deliverance. Please find Jesus and get some Deliverance it really does help with addictions
I never had any addictive tendencies until I was 25 then desires started
I found that praying it away would keep it at Bay and then finally when I had Deliverance it never came back.
I completely understand how Americans could wind up homeless very easily.
If you're on drugs please get help. I don't understand everything that goes on in regards to homelessness and the resources that are available but I do know in the state of California they were given 25 billion dollars to end homelessness I know there's corruption so they're doing a piss poor job of it
But there has to be a way to help people who hit rock bottom
      Please find Jesus first.

Im a veteran and im currently living in a basement with mold for 1year . Went for help at my local CAADC and got the run around and false hope for help getting an Apartment. I was working fulltime but recently got laid off. After 6months of sending them apartments to approve for me " And nothing being done on their end" i finally gave up. I wasn't looking for a hand out....just a hand up. With rent being so high, i was going to be paying the majority of it plus my own utilities....with what little they were going to help me with, it wasn't worth the stress they put me through....

When I get a short break, I’ve made myself clear, STOP asking me for money, food, or cigarettes. None of them do anymore because I’m very aggressive about it. I had no choice to but to be homeless when I became disabled and kept being denied disability. And I do not like people constantly witnessing to me and shoving their version of Jesus down my throat just to have a roof over my head. There needs to be shelters that are not religion-based where people can go. I went to one and had to sit through some guy ranting and raving about culture issues just to be able to eat so forget it. Why is there no treatment for addiction except for the wealthy? Why is there no mental health in the community except through a religion? You don't realize how brutal this country is until you're not able to work. Not only do you lose your insurance you can't get disability They do disability just like they do insurance deny deny deny. I met several people who unalived because they could not get disability or had no health insurance and were turned away from a hospital

I was homeless two full years back in college from jr yr till graduation back in 2013 in California. At times i slept in my car near college campus or near parks. It was so scary and cold at night that i couldn't sleep at night so i only slept in the day it was the worst most depression two years of my life. No one cares about you every one avoids you especially class mates and teachers alike.

I hate it when people say, homelessness comes from bad decisions.....or, "poor choices".
True, some outright choose the lifestyle right from the start but this is a minority. So we can't use these as blanket, cover-all statements.
Sure, were all affected by our daily decisions, but everything in life is not a result of our choices. Misfortune is real. Bad luck really does exist. Someone descending down the path toward homelessness is systematically getting their choices reduced thru consecutive unfortunate circumstances....usually beyond their control. And from this broken platform, they must make their "choices". In these scenarios it's common where homelessness is the only choice left.
So....even though some of us have chosen homelessness, you can't rightfully blame us, and our choices, for our current state or condition.

" Did the pressures of success lead to his addiction"? Trauma/ stress/ pressures can only lead to addiction if the individual allows it to. I had a horrific childhood that caused me to become homeless due to an impaired functioning ability that kept me unemployable. Through all of this, I never turned to substances. Why, becausr I was not willing to relinquish my dream of one day having a better life. I fought tooth and nail agianst all odds and am now a proud homeowner!

Depression is a trap that can justify using/drinking. You have to understand that life is not always perfect, ut has ups, and it has downs.
The universe never completely abandons us, it's just up to each individual to discover their options. As long as their is a glimmer of hope, we have an abilty to dig ourselves out if our own trenches.

In the beginning of the video, Keith who is a US Navy veteran and homeless is a sad story of all homeless veterans. The VA needs to start serving those who served America but unfortunately are forgotten after their discharge from service. JFK once said, ask not what America can do for you, ask what you can do for America. And that's where the problems start when it comes to homeless veterans, some of which are disabled and shell shocked from fighting in wars. The VA needs to reach out and house homeless veterans such as Keith who has already been homeless for a decade while struggling just to survive.

But you gotta understand America does not help their own people. That's what they put blocks and stuff like that. So people can't sleep all over the place on the streets. The safe people shouldn't be homeless but the market did not take care of that people. You have to take care of your people. So it makes sense reasonable so they can afford to have somewhere if you're gonna have a shelter have a shelter with individual rooms like a big hole. Or help people with conditions. Oh, you must do it on a church to help you. Let's both fix it now. Help them to help them don't help them with conditions.

I’m in my sixties, with below poverty level income, have Crohn’s disease. I’ve never been homeless in fact I’m on my second home that I bought myself with no help. It has requires a very strict budget over the years. So I’m sorry that I have no sympathy for these people. They have made bad life decisions and why should we bail them out when they’ll just lose it on drug abuse? If I can do it, everyone should be able to have a home, car, and even pets. No pity or sympathy here.
