This, and your last video are gold. I’ve read lots about all of this but can never see it in my game. Your breakdown of it is clear, concise and explains what to do. Currently on a 15 match unbeaten run using your tips. Before I would just kick off with key highlights and see what happens, without changing (or blind clicking things hoping they help). As a 20 year veteran of the game, watching these videos makes me realise how much I don’t know. Or have never learnt. Less is more…but more of these please.
thank you :) like a mentioned in the video, sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. I find that if you have a plan, it's easier to stomach the result (win or lose) since you had an idea in mind heading into the match. Everything else is up to them
Your continued tweaks/advancement in your video style is awesome to see. It's not often I watch a YT video and need to think about it in depth. You accomplish that. Teaching, sharing ideas. Dude, you're doing great. Keep it up.

I love that you have found success in the world of FM content creation which has increasingly skewed towards exploits, engine breaking and ‘meta’ tactics. Your purist approach to the game is really refreshing and for me, genuinely a revelation. I’ve been playing FM for 10 years and realised through watching your videos that I’ve been playing the game in a way that takes the joy out of it. I know you’ve been at this for a long time so thank you for the hard work and breathing life into the game. And the A E S T H E T I C 😍
thank you for the kind words and the comment :) I love the realistic approach because while you don't win nearly as much as other approaches, the joy and immersion I get from FM is unrivaled.
Then, if a game is played, I always check in the data center how the next opponent plays. If they are pressing, I use a more vertical tactic without much ball contact. If they play in possession, I apply pressure and counterattack. If they play on the counterattack, I use possession and shoot whenever possible to finish the play and not leave room for the counterattack. The good thing about seeing it beforehand is that you train your specific team for the next game. The only thing that still gives me a headache is deep shots, because if my team applies pressure, they get the ball in the back. Now, I don't know how to solve the set pieces. Every game is a throw-in, free kick, corner kick, even a goal kick, lol. It's like Arsenal playing. A shout out to you from Brazil, master...

Hello, thank you for these helpful videos for new FM players. I have a small request: could you possibly organize the player roles videos into three categories: Defend, Midfield, and Attack? It would make it easier for us to watch and analyze. I really enjoy your videos.
It may be weird, but the referee actually has a huge impact on if I use those instructions. I just played a match where the ref gave out like 7 yellow cards in the first half; playing with get stuck in would've been a disaster. Likewise, if a ref is lenient, you can get stuck in to put more pressure on the opponent.
Wow another amazing guide, thank you for them, actually I love these quizes as well haha. I was also thinking, how you manage the players familiarity with the roles if you are changing them that often. I mean if you always adapt to the current opponent's tactics, sometimes you have to change the roles to the perfect ones for the current situation, but what if for example you want to use your CDM as a Half-back, sometimes Anchor, sometimes Segundo Volante. Of course some roles are "overlapping", that can also help, and I know the answer is probably that you choose the ones that suit your players and u also train them for some roles. Or for example the defensive line and pressing styles, I guess you have to sacrifice at least 6 months to get the team familiar with them, otherwise they would make a lot of errors. I'm curious about your practice for these situations 😁 Anyway it's so realistic and I love this way, I remember that Ancelotti is this kind of coach, he is always adapting to his opponents and his actual players.
thanks! and yea I think the player role quizzes have been a lot of fun haha; I figure it's a fun way to think about the roles and what they do. As far as your question.. Whether good or bad, I don't pay a lot of attention to a player's familiarity with a role. I think of it like an equation: their attributes + player type + how it fits in the tactic = the player role I choose. You alluded to it in your question, but I'll use the player type and then choose a player role that fits into the tactic. As an example, one of my favorite players in FM is Lanzini at River Plate. His player type is a midfield creator, so I'll play him as a Trequartista, Enganche, Mezzala, etc... whatever the overlap of his skill and what the tactic needs; but I would never play him as a Ball Winning Midfielder. Hope that makes sense :)
In tough away matches, when I know won't be able to control possession, I tend to play with slower tempo and shorter passing. I feel like higher tempo and direct passing give the ball away too much I try to frustrate the opposition without going too defensive
I love it!! that's the great thing about FM. There's no one right way to play and there are multiple avenues to tackle a situation (no pun intended lol)
In my unemployment save im currently at VFB Stuttgart and few days ago my 4-3-3 team was on the attack. the winger on the right side couldnt get past his opponent so he passed the ball to the mezzalla who was underlapping him. the mezzalla (A) had 3 options. he could try a pass into the center to the striker, pass to the inverted wingback behind him or try a 1v1 dribbling into the center. Instead he chose to play a long low pass across the whole field to the left fullback who nailed the ball from 25+ meters with 120km/h right under the crossbar. and im still not sure if that was a moment of pure genius from both of them or just pure luck that that pass wasnt intercepted. I know that has absolutely nothing to do with the topic of the video i just needed something for the algorythm. :D
I'd like to think that the FM universe saw your Mezzala make that amazing pass and to balance it out, it punished my Regista in this video so he makes a horrific pass haha
Do you ever do some of these scouting steps in advance of your match? Either watching highlights of the opponent or anything involving the data hub? This method is great just curious if there are any tips you would have for getting your starting posture set before the game starts.
How on earth you know I needed this guide when my FC Twente just lost against Barcelona 4-1 ,played aggressive high line and pressing and I could not figure out how to counter. Thanks for the tips
I only say because of familiarity on the tactics screen. Yet your way makes perfect sense since it deals with teams game by game and it feels more realistic. Anyway, congratulations on reaching 20k subscribers.
@@pjbenton1980 thanks :) and the way I approach it is that there will be a hit with the tactical familiarity when you change things up, but you can offest that with the advantages you can create. so all in all, it's a wash (at least to me haha)
If I was trying to exploit the tactic I set up, I would want overlapping runs. My defense was set up to protect the midfield, so work the wider areas by using Wing Backs. Roles like the Carrilero, Wide Playmaker, Raumdeuter, etc.. are all particulary effectivse role out on the flanks.
@@TheDeepLyingPlaymaker tbh a video on press conferences wouldn't be popular but it would probably one of the most useful for your typical player. If you let the AI do it they can get you in a lot of trouble.
I don't think it's the next video, but I've got a video coming up that deals with opposition instructions and my approach to them. Stay tuned! and thanks for the comment :)
I struggle with the same question, but as a lazy manager I’d rather the opposition worry about my team and keep my team in the same shape. Keep the same formation and change the roles/duties.
@ I’m guilty of that. Ive seen that it’s best to stick to your principles for team cohesion for consistency and familiarity. I’m thinking now probably a bit of both
Generally, I play my own style rather specifically adapting to every opponent. But I think stuff like in this video can be useful if you're playing a match and nothing is really working. It's fun to try and identify how they're trying to stop you.
Probably gonna watch back goals/chances I give up in 2D from now on bc of this. And gonna try the NCB some more. I like to have at least one ball playing defender even if they're not amazing at it but I'm too possession minded lol
I was wondering if u always see the whole game (until u feel u have the opponent figured out), or do you have it set to extented highligts? Also, do you set your team up by looking at the opponent in datahub before a game? And isnt it kinda bad to change the formation frequently, or is it just in games where you feel its more even or they have better players?
Funny enough I've got a video coming out talking about using the datahub to analyze and figure out a strategy for the opponent. And you do take a hit to tactical familiarity by changing your tactics a lot, but you can also offset that by making the proper adjustments in taking advantage of the opponent.
Very helpful teacher can u cook a lesson about strenght and weakness of each formation i'm using a possesiom based 4-4-2 diamond and many time struggle against a 4-2-3-1
thanks for the suggestion :) and don't worry, there will always be role combination videos in the works! just wanted to do some analysis stuff in recent videos
What Is your opinion of double pivots im dm who have same duty, something like 2 support duties - dlp s and segundo volamde s, dm s and dm s I noticed bust the net always use 2 guys on support in dm positons, and doing well, do you play sometimes like that?
I do like to use the same duty on occasion, but I usually save it for more talented teams. I think I used a DLP(S) and a DM(S) in one of my Leverkusen tactics. In general, I'll usually use someone on the defend duty.
Quick unrelated question What attributes matter the most in the minor leagues? And some tips would be nice too am trying to start a new save from the Vanarama national league north.
Wouldn't be better playing a standard CB next to a playmaker-DM role like Regista, DLP, RPM? Or does the NCB makes a 50/50 choice between booting the ball long and passing to his focus-role teammate?
great observation! and yep, the NCB will on occasion bypass the playmaker in the midfield. But that's something I'm okay with, since I specifcally wanted them to play safe. And you're spot on; their decision making process will usually be "is the playmaker here? if not, get it up the field" If I was playing a system wher I wanted the ball more, I would've used the Central Defender so that kinda thing doesn't happen as much.
I have a question about mentality because you most play on standard, and when you play some good teams like Barca, real,Borussia,Arsenal, totenahm etc it's hard to play on standard mentality, it works better on positive and offensive can you say more about it?
On standart such teams I play on teams at a similar level or away, so I want to learn something more because this topic is hard most say that mentality is only responsible for risk. You approach it differently
Also you almost always play with defensive midfielders, aren't these good teams better to play without you know there are a lot of dependent things but I'm asking out of curiosity? Another question many players say that the line of engagement is the determinant of the game of your team whether it plays offensively or defensively, that's why I asked about the mentality because many players say that the counter is best to play for example on a positive mentality and I ask so out of curiosity what do you think about these things. Grettings!
great questions! and thanks for the comment :) the broad answer to your questions is that there are a ton of ways to approach a match in Football Manager, and there is no "correct" answer in what you should dp. For mentality, any setting will work if you've got a clear plan. For example, in my "Counter Tactic" video, I went over to tactic ideas: one with defensive, and one with attacking. Don't feel like you have to use a certain mentaliy :) In this video, I tried to hit them on the counter with the balanced mentality. With line of engagement, it's basically where you want your furthest player to stand. If you go back to the clip in this video where I point out my strikers, you'll see the Poacher following the "low block" instruction and standing at the halfway line. But the Target Forward is a supporting role, so he's dropped to play more like a midfielder. If you used a Pressing Forward, he'd play more like a defensive midfielder at times. All this to say, there are countless ways to approach a situation, and the freedom to choose means you can come up with a lot of different ways to approach a situation. Hope this helps and thanks again for the questions! :)
actually vs good teams i find that cautious can be pretty useful mentality to try to limit chances, even at home and hope you get a point. the description for cautious talks about getting your players behind the ball in defense but breaking when an opportunity arises, but it does limit the chances of both teams. tbh i only use positive mentality when i want my fullbacks/wide center backs to break forward often than balanced. and in a 352 defensive shape, i like to counter the inherent conservatism when you have a top team by using an attacking mentality. One eye opening thing about alot of DLP's videos has been reading alot more of the game's descriptions for specific tactical buttons and making my own conclusions. Now dont think of the mentaility's as a sliding scale but rather the bedrock of your tactical philosophy. If your changing it during a match, you need to think carefully about how it will change your teams process. I usually find that changing my mentaility without alot of other additional changes has a negative impact on my teams overall cohesion.
I really enjoyed this video. I have a question, though... I noticed that your familiarity seems low. Is it not important? I would love to hear your opinion.
thank you for the question :) and I'll say this, I probably don't pay as much attention to familiarity as I should haha. I find that being able to adapt to the opponent in a specific match can sometimes "offset" the penalty you get with a lower familiarity

@@pjbenton1980 thanks :) and the way I approach it is that there will be a hit with the tactical familiarity when you change things up, but you can offest that with the advantages you can create. so all in all, it's a wash (at least to me haha)
while i was watching I wondered what would be the weakness of your formation 424? What do you think? And how can i exploit that
If I was trying to exploit the tactic I set up, I would want overlapping runs. My defense was set up to protect the midfield, so work the wider areas by using Wing Backs. Roles like the Carrilero, Wide Playmaker, Raumdeuter, etc.. are all particulary effectivse role out on the flanks.
‘How to be Mourinho before matches’ ah video
But I enjoyed it regardless 😂
I just need to be able to have more snarky comments in the press conferences haha
@@TheDeepLyingPlaymaker tbh a video on press conferences wouldn't be popular but it would probably one of the most useful for your typical player. If you let the AI do it they can get you in a lot of trouble.
Can you do opposition instructions video to elevate the tactics and game plan based on this opposition analysis?
I don't think it's the next video, but I've got a video coming up that deals with opposition instructions and my approach to them. Stay tuned! and thanks for the comment :)
Yeah would really like to see something more in-depth on opposition analysis.
Great videos as always btw. Easily the best FM TH-camr.
Love it. But is it best to play your own style or adapt to your opponent. I assume it depends on how strong your squad is in the league.
Or is it simply try and identify space and attack it
I struggle with the same question, but as a lazy manager I’d rather the opposition worry about my team and keep my team in the same shape.
NCB's are a lot of fun. You'll get a few passes during a match where it seems like they're kicking it to noone, but overall they do their job.
@@TheDeepLyingPlaymaker Thanks forthe answer, cant wait for the video!
Very helpful teacher can u cook a lesson about strenght and weakness of each formation i'm using a possesiom based 4-4-2 diamond and many time struggle against a 4-2-3-1
thanks :) and I love the idea of identifying weaknesses in a formation. that'd be a fun topic for the future!
More role combinations please.
thanks for the suggestion :) and don't worry, there will always be role combination videos in the works! just wanted to do some analysis stuff in recent videos
I’m interest in the moss tactics
they were pretty fun to analyze
Is that first section title a MadTV reference?
It is!!!! I didn't think anyone would get the reference hahaha. You get the Gold Star for today ⭐
What Is your opinion of double pivots im dm who have same duty, something like 2 support duties - dlp s and segundo volamde s, dm s and dm s
I noticed bust the net always use 2 guys on support in dm positons, and doing well, do you play sometimes like that?
I do like to use the same duty on occasion, but I usually save it for more talented teams. I think I used a DLP(S) and a DM(S) in one of my Leverkusen tactics.
In general, I'll usually use someone on the defend duty.
Quick unrelated question
What attributes matter the most in the minor leagues? And some tips would be nice too am trying to start a new save from the Vanarama national league north.
I would look for work rate and teamwork. A hard working player is welcome in all leagues, and it's an easy attribute to look for
@TheDeepLyingPlaymaker yeah but aren't those two and determination the obvious for every player?
Wouldn't be better playing a standard CB next to a playmaker-DM role like Regista, DLP, RPM? Or does the NCB makes a 50/50 choice between booting the ball long and passing to his focus-role teammate?
great observation! and yep, the NCB will on occasion bypass the playmaker in the midfield. But that's something I'm okay with, since I specifcally wanted them to play safe. And you're spot on; their decision making process will usually be "is the playmaker here? if not, get it up the field"
If I was playing a system wher I wanted the ball more, I would've used the Central Defender so that kinda thing doesn't happen as much.
@@TheDeepLyingPlaymaker I see, thanks for the reply.
Grettings!
great questions! and thanks for the comment :)
the broad answer to your questions is that there are a ton of ways to approach a match in Football Manager, and there is no "correct" answer in what you should dp.
How about data hub? Is it accurate?
it's very accurate :) hope to have a video in the near future using the data hub
Why don't you use data hub?
don't worry, that will be in an upcoming video :) these ideas are just about trying to learn more about the opponent during a match
I checked fm 22 all day long it still looks average certainly better than 19,20,21, but still it doesn't look as good as 24, 23 I left I don't want to test I will stay exclusively with 24 unless you know something about 23 more is there any point in playing or 24 is much better when it comes to ME? Do not combine and play all the time in 24 xD ?
Yea I think in FM24 they really nailed the movement. So fun to watch in the match
How about you start a career with the team chosen by us and let your transfer committee to do transfer for you, think about it. I mean explain what you do while playing. It will be fun.
Like “pressing need this attributes so I’m going to make these substitutions”
I've always avoided the analyst part of this game. Until now, I've never understood it.
there's a bit to get used to, but it's a lot of fun to add in to the game!
Thank you DPL
you're welcome!
