I’m 61 years old and can do a DOD delete in about 8 hours , no pulling the pan , these engines are not bad to work on at all , they just look like there is allot to do , but in reality everything is pretty well engineered and easily accessible you have 2 valve cover bolts on each side by the firewall that you may not see so make sure you remove them and one head bolt on each side again by the firewall easily seen you’ll need a impact wobble socket to get on it , while the heads are off make sure to put cylinder one on top dead center and confirm it’s on compression stroke then mark the cam and crank gear and make sure you do not rotate the crank , you can remove the cam gear by working the chain of a tooth at a time , but first you must push the tensioner away from the chain and lock it in place by putting a pin through the chain guide and the guide mount ( I used a Honda tensioner pin that they are shipped with as I work in a Honda service department) I would say anyone could stop by a Honda dealer and ask a tech for one as it works great

actually a pretty easy job. its just nuts and bolts. ive put cams and pull engines out of 90s- current year chevy trucks. these l83/l86 are by far give me the least amount of trouble
Did one this week. You don't need to pull the oil pan. After setting TDC marks on old sprockets turn the crank ~30 degrees and you can shimmy out the cam gear. Put heat on the harmonic balancer bolt to soften the face sealant and it come right out.
@@Gokywildcats11 1400 for parts another 1.5k- 2k labor and shop materials. Anybody saying anything else are scamming, LS is the legos of engines, very simple. You could even do this yourself and save 2 grand, you'll just have to find a tuner that'll come to you.
So theres this thing called an impact socket....... It adds rotational mass, and gets balancer bolts off..... Also, theres zero chance it explodes and sends metal into your hands. Just a thought.

The converters fail because of transmission temperatures. Get an upgraded thermal bypass valve and as long as it wasn’t hurt before it should be fine. I did that but also put a 6l90 converter in mine
1725 for the parts with recommended new oil pump 425 for the cylinder head portion to be done 4500 for the performance shops labor 725 tune and dyno Plus oil, antifreeze new plugs
I did this to my '10 in the driveway. Have to admit this wasn't as smooth going as they expected (cracked head not their fault) but all that work for 40 hp? Id like to see the dyno charts before and after to see where it gained tq and hp throughout the rev range.
There is no way around tuning a vehicle when doing a cam swap. At least if swapping to something that will actually show a change in performance. That aside, your '15 truck has DOD, which needs to be eliminated and turned off in the tune in order to do a cam swap.

I agree this whole episode scared me off these dudes and I guarantee they cracked that head taking out a manifold bolt based on how inept they were trying to take out the balancer bolt.
Mine was $9800 on a 17 L83 4x4 $2100 for TS cam and lifter kit w/ DOD delete $2000 for TS long tube headers and cat back exhaust $675 to get my heads resurfaced, vapor blasted, and 3 angle valve job $1000 for the dyno tune and credits $4000 in labor which warranty company paid for because of Bank 2 lifter failure. And then another $7300 for a whole new transmission a few months later after my torque converter went lol. GMC dealership did that repair for $200 an hour. They won’t touch the motor though because of aftermarket parts, one thing to take into consideration

Is the OEM cam “bad” from the factory or is that replaced at the same because the engine is opened already, the added power, or preventative maintenance or what? Thanks
I did this on my 2020 Sierra 1500 with the 5.3l L84 and after reinstalling the engine, it won’t start. I am stumped as to what is wrong. Every connector is back in place except the wiring that went to the sensors and crap under the valley cover. Other than that everything is tight and seems to be in the right spot. When I try to start it the dash goes dark and nothing happens. No starter click or anything. Then the dash comes back on. What could it be?
I have a '18 Tahoe and I had my buddy install some software that eliminated the DOD. I will eventually do the same thing you guy's are doing but this software install is a great temporary fix.
I'm doing it this week. Stage two and delet kit. More because I have to do it. DOD took out my lifters and I bet my cam is gonna be compromised too so I might as well huh.
On these years Chevs PULL the engine and replace that garbage factory torque converter if you gonna do this delete. Pull it. Toss the factory torque converter. Install something like a Florida Torque Converter Co TC.. I've used them in a previous swap and they seem rock solid. 😎👍
Yall got the wrong GM head gaskets for the L86 on your site, i had to pay reverse shipping Twice.. You sent me head gaskets for the 6.6L L8T, someone linked the part numbers wrong in your system.
How did the tune turn out? I did DOD and VVT delete and had it tuned. Still runs like crap. And has shutting misfire at idle. Any help would be greatly appreciated
Sounds like a broken spark plug. I've seen it happen with plugs that are not for that truck (champion, Bosch ect). Clean out your mass air flow sensor, change your wires and do ACDelco o.e.m. plugs. Also replace the pvc valve

You guys are to funny! I can do a cam swap in 5hrs. First off why would you take the cylinder heads off if you're just doing a cam swap? All you do is pull the pushrods out stick a pen magnets in each lifter hole holding the lifters up, then slide the old cam out and new one in. Next time you wanna take a crank pulley off just put a breaker bar on it and bump the starter. Watching you guys is like watching a bunch of monkeys humping door knob! The title of the video is literally DOD delete…. Why would you ever half ass not swapping lifters on a Chevy any ways even if you weren’t deleting DOD. That’s the main failure point on most of these motors
Might wanna do your research before thinking you know what you’re talking about. To do a DOD delete on a Gen 5 the heads haft to come off to change the lifters. However the oil pan doesn’t. This isn’t an old LS3 buddy. They were all over the place tho needing 5 ppl to do a 1 man job still taking triple the time. It’s pulling the motor for me. Total waste of time just to do it on a stand. Plenty of room standing in front the engine once the rad is out lol.

For those that may do this, book time is 28 hours with 4wd. If you have 2wd, faster to do with engine in, but not much. Definitely pull engine on 4wd.

Done many Cams on these trucks/Suvs and even c7 without pulling the oil pan. Just tricks of the trade.. 😊

little trick guys, you dont HAVE to pull the oil pan to pull the cam, just takes a little finesse with the tensioner and a screw driver

just an FYI heat the end off the balancer bolt for 45 seconds with a hand held propane torche and it will come right out wit an impact

The engines are different in this truck & the engine that’s in your 10’. The procedure is entirely different for replacing the cam in the Gen V’s

How common is it for a head to crack?
Well it has ported heads on it too so that number isn’t just the cam

Its because the cam used in afm engines is specific to afm lifters.

Had my AFM disabled when I had my truck tuned. Lifter 7 still shit out!
It’s not actually a fix. The AFM lifter could still fail at any time.

I found these to be easier pulling the engine out.
Milwaukee 1/2 inch would have gotten that lower balancer bolt off 🤷🏾♂️

Do they add a lot of power? I know the heads flow very well on these stock so i was just going to swap my 5.3 intake for the 6.2/l86 one

If your truck don’t give you problems like theirs did, you can get it done in a weekend. Took me 2 days to do a stage 2 in my 17 1500

I know I'm late to the party, however, when removing harmonic balancer bolt, a good impact socket is a necessity.
