    Update: It's been about 8 months since the repair work was done. I'm no longer burning any oil and the vehicle seems to be running better as well. I'm sorry to hear that some of you are not having the best of luck with this situation. I encourage you to reach out to Acura directly, and if you're having trouble with one dealership, try another. Hopefully they will work with you to make things right. I wish you all the best!

      I have to tell you, this whole stance taken by Honda of 1qt. of oil burned every 1,000 miles is a big scam! Fortunately, my wife and I have had our Acura rebuilt just as you did Ryan and it's now been 5,000 miles and we've not burned one drop of oil. Prior to the rebuild, their oil test revealed 1.3 qts per 1,000. However, it really was burning much more as I carefully checked it myself before taking it in to them. Their service techs in the garage were cheating the numbers and reporting lower consumption than I know for a fact it was burning. Ours was so bad that they really had no choice than to rebuild it (2010 MDX) The question: If burning 1qt. of oil every 1,000 miles is normal for this engine, then why haven't we burned a drop in 5,000 miles since the engine was rebuilt? We just received a letter informing us of a class action lawsuit against Honda in the Superior Court of California, County of LA against Honda on this "Oil Consumption" issue. I hope they nail Honda's asses to the floor on this because they are "screwing" a whole lot of customers out there with this "so called" 1qt of oil every 1,000 mile thing is normal crap! Bottom line, we will never purchase another Honda product, ever......not even a lawn mower!

      @Ryanvision How is the MDX going for you? I'm thinking about buying one that had the recall work done last year in 2019. Has the repairs fixed the problem completely for you, or did it just reduce the oil consumption? Would you recommend me buying the MDX or look at other models?

      @@Zn0nimus Problem has been completely resolved for me. No more issues with burning oil. Vehicle has been amazing other than that so now that that's fixed I love it. We are actually towing a pontoon boat regularly with it now with no issues. The only annoyance at the moment is the seat/mirror memory is a bit weird. Think I may need to replace the buttons or something because it doesn't always go to my setting the first time.

      @@Zn0nimus I know you didn't ask me, but I have experience with five J35 V6 engines in the past 20 years. One went 200K miles before trade-in... never needed to add oil between changes. Have a '13 Accord at 110K that burns NO oil. I wouldn't take the risk of a J37... More recent models with 3.5L engine are a safer bet.

    Thank you Ryan. We are so happy we found your first video. We took our car to our mechanic because oil light was on. He said this may be a bigger problem than what you are expecting and we should do more research. Searching the Internet we found your TH-cam video. The extended warranty period is expiring on September 1, 2019. From today that’s only 52 days from now. Warning warning warning! I went through the same thing. My MDX 2010 was consuming 1 2/3 quarts every thousand miles. I brought it in for the oil consumption test and they actually overfilled it quite a bit and then told me that it did not qualify. I am a backyard mechanic and very good at this stuff, but they almost had me second-guessing myself. So, I did another Thousand Mile check on my own and saw it was consuming oil like crazy and realized they were trying to pull a quick one. I talked to the service manager who agreed, especially after I showed him my TH-cam videos, to do another consumption test and have me supervised the whole thing. Sure enough they confirmed it was guzzling oil and they agreed to do the job. What a pain in the ass although I am glad I got it all done for free including the initial oil change.

    I actually had the excessive oil consumption issue (burning 1 quart every 1000 miles) with my 13 TL shawd 3.7 j37a4, 6spd. Didnt do the recall on it to get the piston rings changed. And it was too late for me since mileage and age was past the extended warranty for the tsb. So I went out, raced revved it on the highway 4-5 time. And problem solved, the heat and high revs broke loose the carbon build up, and after that, no more oil consumption. You just have to race it a few times a month to clean the engine of the carbon build up on the piston rings.

    I don't have an Acura dealer close by but the local Honda dealership has said the will work with me on the oil consumption test which is nice. If I do need the engine repair to fix I'd have to go to the Acura dealership which is about 50 miles away. This is in the Pacific Northwest

      @@outrightpainting2203: My dealer (in Colorado) required three 1,000 mile oil consumption tests. Similar to Ryan, twice I took it in early due to the fact the oil dipstick had no oil on it at all by 850 miles & 930 respectively. Service tech said he only added 1.1 quarts at 850 miles and 1.15 quarts at 930? Be ware! The hash-marks (1/2" long) on the dipstick represents 1 quart of oil. There is another 1/2" to the bottom of the stick below the hash-marks. This represents another quart of oil per my own tests but my dealer was fudging the numbers to their favor by saying it was only down 1.15 quarts! When I came unglued about this and called them out, the service tech shrugged his shoulders and insisted that's how much oil they added to top it out. I demanded to speak with the service manager who assured me they'd do the right thing but he insisted we finish the test before getting too upset. At 600 miles I took it in for the final check, which was 2,380 total miles driven. MDX burned 3.5 quarts total. Very excessive. They plan to start repairs next Mon. to replace the rings, pistons, adjust the valves and replace all of the seals. My point to this is, even though my MDX had no oil on the stick 3 times, they were cheating the numbers when topping out the oil. Still it was so excessive that they had to admit the car had serious oil consumption issues. Be ware folks! Not all dealers are equal.

      I'm not sure if it will qualify but hopefully it will because it might get worse later depending on your mileage. Seems they're looking for at least a quart or more per 1000 miles.

    I took my 2011 mdx to the dealer Aug 30 for the test. They put the kit on to monitor the oil but they said I had a oil pressure pump leak which is common but not leaking on the ground. They told me they won't fix the consumption because the oil pump leak. Smh

    • @ryan.vision
      @ryan.vision  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I did not. Since the pump is internal (no oil was leaking outside of the engine) and I didn't have any oil pressure issues, I didn't think it was worth the money to mess with it. I had them do the timing belt and adjust the valves along with new spark plugs. I passed on the water pump because I had records of that being done recently. The MDX is running like a champ now, still no leaks, and no more burning oil!!

      @@ryan.vision on some engines oil seal can seep externally. My engine is seeping externally and it was noted when I had my certified oil change. My fear is that they will say that with that leak the test is void and I will have to get that repaired and do the oil consumption test again. But since they repaired yours it gives me hope. Now that this recall is public it's going to be hard to sell an MDX unless the oil consumption issue has been corrected. Like yours, my MDX is a weekend dog hauler. Burning some oil is not a terrible thing but with premium fuel at current prices, plus oil at 11 bucks a quart it can get a little expensive to operate MDX

    • @ryan.vision
      @ryan.vision  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hopefully they take care of you just like they took care of me. They didn't mention anything about leaks or the oil pump until they had the engine apart. If they had tried to deny me right in the beginning based on any type of leak I would have argued because my driveway doesn't have a spot on it and in my mind it would have to leak some serious oil to be disqualified. I hear ya on the gas prices.. I'm CA paying the big bucks for gas... I hate when they mention the national average of 2 something while I'm paying just about double haha best of luck to ya!!

    Do you think it would be a good idea to buy a 2011 acura tl with the 3.7 with 90k miles, I'm confused because I have no way of really checking if it burns oil

    • @ryan.vision
      @ryan.vision  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I would ask the owner about burning oil. They may lie to you, but worth a try. Check exhaust tips to see if the bottom is black. Check the oil to see if it's dark and smelly. Ask if they were aware of oil issue and if they had it repaired. If they say yeah, ask for paperwork. It's a gamble unless there's any documentation.

    How long you had to wait before getting the cars in for the repairs, I’m asking because my mdx is been approved for the repairs but my dealer is taking so long to get the vehicle in for the repairs because they said parts are on back order

    • @ryan.vision
      @ryan.vision  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Once it was approved to be fixed, they scheduled an appointment about 2 weeks out. I dropped the car off on a Tues morning and picked it up Friday afternoon. They did say that I got in early though which was good because they expected things to get backed up as more people became aware. I didn't have any delays due to parts not being available.
