    Does anybody else just wanna move out in the middle of the woods to practice singing and go back to civilization after you're good, so your neighbors won't think you're crazy? 🤣 (Or that every house had thick walls)

    Chris I’m super frustrated with my singing because while I’m by myself, I can sing very well with great placement and no strain through and above my vocal bridge, but as SOON as I step on stage, I begin to sing too throaty and I strain above a D4. How can I allow my voice to stay free and allow my resonance to gradually shift upwards as I ascend in pitch regardless of how nervous I am? Btw, I don’t get shakey or weak

    • @chrisliepe
      @chrisliepe  3 ปีที่แล้ว +16

      You can't. The nerves are always going to win. You have to convince yourself that it doesn't matter. You're ultimately a slave to success, and that will cause failure... I'm only speaking from experience here haha cause I haven't heard you sing... BUT I know for me... This was THE KEY. I had to go out to gigs expecting to completely bomb and that it had to be ok... Then I was free to throw my voice around, and experiment just like I did by myself... and success came! Now, I can belt out D5s all day long in front of other people, because it doesn't matter if I mess them up. I know this isn't a "right" or "coach" type answer. But it is the only thing that is going to work. Exercises or drills at this point will only serve to accentuate the fear driven "am I prepared enough" mindset.

      I personally wear sunglasses in social situations no matter the time of day because I am diagnosed with severe social anxiety its extremely debilitating at times even to the point where i have fallen in social situations because I am just that of a nervous wreck. But one night i had the opportunity of playing a live show with a guitarist and a drummer its night time. I'm wearing sunglasses on stage and everytime i go for a scream my right leg is shaking like a washing machine and people are staring at me. But i realized something that night no matter how broken i personally feel on stage if I can show people my authentic self even if its a broken person my message still gets across. Now lets discuss we did three songs together everyone was dancing and screaming excited. And when we thought we done the people screamed encore and the guitarist started playing something random and the drummer followed him they did it for a minute and i stood there akward looking at people in dim glasses and the guitarist screamed they want to hear you man sing it. I had no lyrics cause this was all on the spot and i came up with everything I sang the lyrics
      "You can't have me" "you'll never have a piece of me" and I was singing to my anxiety and my depression. People wanted more from us after the show but we had to get going. Moral of the story you got this. Be a nervous wreck and display all your emotion after awhile itll become easy to just let it out.

    Notes cause otherwise I don't retain any information lol
    - voice dries out with improper/incomplete cord closure (airiness, breathiness, unintentional rasp)
    - practice word "head" -- soft onset with the h, transition to pure cord closure (try with good and poor closure to feel the difference)
    - zombie chorus yodel thing: starts with good closure, breaks into head voice. Let the head voice be breathy. Break into head voice and feel a "deflate"
    - "head" practices going from incomplete to full closure
    - yodel practices going from full cord closure to incomplete closure

    Thanks Chris, another helpful video. I'd heard that warm water with honey, lemon was good for the voice ... a myth dispelled.
    And the other thing that dries my mouth out is nerves and anxiety before a live performance especially. Nothing like the "you're live" moment to have me reaching for my water-bottle. Guess in time the nerves will become more positive to build energy and I'll overcome the more anxious nerves.

    I screwed up my voice singing way too much on a very humid week and now its dry out, I lost my falsetto and head voice and need to rest it, but I have seen videos from others regarding vibrators and using them to massage vocal cords - is this a real thing, would it help me recover, can i use it to warm up my voice everyday to avoid this happening again, and would you recommend trying this? I am not sure if it is a joke or if it will help and i'll try anything to get my voice back.

    man i took a long while to understand how to connect diafragmatic support to closure with eficiency, initialy i thought i had it right but i wasnt feeling that much confort, the tight neck and hoarse voice would eventually creep in and i wasnt understanding why and getting frustrated, i mean this muscle flexed, that spine aligned, why you know... the problems occured especially in my chest register or using grit as i was messing around with mix i didnt had that problem so much, eventually i realized that when i mixed i tended to use that outwards pull of the solar plexus and that pressure would join my focal folds together, you know like when youre poing lol Right there it finally clicked for me how support works with your vocal folds, how it pressurizes your body, that cushion feel, power coming from below, leaning forward, all those expressions that i never really felt completely made sense, i had only half of the equasion, i mean i already understood a bit of mix and grit but didnt support that well lol I feel most aticles and videos focus too much on the diafragm movement and not at how it provides focal closure, people end up just flexing their belly muscles but not really creating pressure and airflow, at least this was my case, can really relate to this video

I've had post nasal most of my life (as probably bc had both of those issues most of my life). I find my voice gets what feels like a bit dry and a little... Inflamed... Not really pain. What are your thoughts on larynx position? I hear a LOT of these high mark, pretentious vocal couches saying that your larynx can’t move at all, and that it has to stay in a “neutral” or “low” position.

    • @chrisliepe
      @chrisliepe  3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      That's a horrible way to think about it. If you try to keep your larynx still, you'll focus on that and tense up, then you won't be able to do anything. Let it do what it does. Just don't reach for notes or raise your larynx to try and hit notes. Make it a tonal preference thing. If your reaching for notes instead of learning to harness support, correct muscle positioning and compression to dial in a healthy mix, your messing up regardless of where your larynx is. So anyone who says don't move your larynx isn't doing a good job of coaching with the bigger issues in mind!
