  • This week, Mike will demonstrate some tips and tricks on engraving a photograph onto our 3mm TroGlass Clear cast acrylic using our Speedy 300 laser engraving machine.
    He will use CorelDraw as a design program with the following techniques: contrasting the brightness, sharpening the image and converting it to a dotted black and white pattern.

    Great video. Is there a correlation between the dpi you chose (for the acrylic print) and the resolution of the photo you started with? What dictates you choosing a 600 dpi vs, say, 1000dpi?

    I’m new to this laser engraving and I would like if you can advise me here. You used 45% with 100 speed with your 80w laser. If I’m using a 20w = to about 5.5-6w laser, what % and speed I would have to use.

    This engraving is beautiful! I have a Glowforge and I know the settings would need to be different. Any advice you can give me on how to get the correct settings with mine to get this same result? Or would I just convert the image exactly the same and use the same settings that I'd normally use on my Glowforge? Also, I use Inkscape to convert my photo the way you did? Or would I need to use another software? Thanks!

      So I have a glowforge as well. I only successfully was able to engrave to where the picture was very clear once. I don’t know what I did. The issue I’m running across is actually getting it to convert to whatever first not necessarily the settings on glowforge. Just select the acrylic option that setting seems fine but it’s the converting the picture properly is the issue for me; I’m working on it today so if i figure it out I will let you know.

  • @DesignCutters
    @DesignCutters ปีที่แล้ว

    Why do you run it at 600 DPI when the image is 300 DPI? Telling it to increase the DPI is not going to increase your detail - it will instead make your dots overlap each other more than they are in the original and reduce the amount of white space.
    Another question I have always wondered about is when you select "automatic", what does the software use to determine an optimal PPI? Is it a percentage of other factors? Is it based on the level of light and dark detail? I assume Trotec is defining PPI as PULSE per inch rather than PIXELS per inch?

    • @TrotecLaserCanada
      @TrotecLaserCanada  ปีที่แล้ว

      Regarding running the laser at 600 DPI when the image is 300 DPI, the reason for this is to improve the quality of the engraving. When the laser is set to 600 DPI, it is able to produce more intricate details by firing the laser at smaller intervals, resulting in a higher resolution image. While it is true that simply increasing the DPI will not add additional detail to an image, it can improve the clarity and sharpness of the details that are already present.
      When selecting the "automatic" option in our software, the PPI is determined based on a variety of factors including the material being engraved, the speed of the laser, and the complexity of the design. Our software uses an algorithm to analyze these factors and determine the optimal PPI for each project. This allows for a more efficient and effective engraving process.
      And yes, Trotec defines PPI as pulses per inch, rather than pixels per inch. PPI refers to the number of laser pulses that are fired per inch of travel by the laser head. This measurement is used to determine the resolution of the engraving and can be adjusted to achieve the desired level of detail for each project.
      I hope this information helps! Please let us know if you have any additional questions or concerns.

    • @DesignCutters
      @DesignCutters ปีที่แล้ว

      @@TrotecLaserCanada This is interesting info - thank you. So, if the image has no detail (white) for a given pixel, does the PPI number still ignore the white pixels regardless of the PPI? Or will an increase in PPI at some point produce overlapping pixels (and produce less detail, darker) if the setting is increased more than the number of distinct individual dots the laser is capable of producing per inch? Does the automatic setting avoid overlapping dots or will that still happen?

  • @cindykruger9736
    @cindykruger9736 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    I 2nd Darius' question - about the photographer's copyright. They make most of their money on the prints and usually not as much on the sittings. Clearly your client originally brought in a photographer's proof (low res). Printing from that would violate the photog's copyright. That's why they give clients low res files. Copying from the original print is also a violation of the photog's copyright. The client was sold that single print. It's not a "negative" the client owns to make as many duplicates as possible - unless the photographer provided a writtten release to treat it as such...

    • @TrotecLaserCanada
      @TrotecLaserCanada  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Cindy, are you talking about in general or in this particular video? In general, engravers who do photographs usually do them for weddings and special events. In which case we always suggest to double check with the photographer about re-making the photo onto a piece of wood or acrylic.
