    Justin, thank you for this detailed study of the creation of "Voodoo Lounge". It's the most revealing and fun documentary of this album I've ever seen, and I love the title you chose !
    Of all the best rock and roll songwriters, none of them have Keith Richards' song shaping skills as a guitarist. Musicians as varied as Elvis Costello, Steven Van Zandt and Pearl Jam guitarist Mike McCready have all expressed their admiration for Keith, especially his songwriting. Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers guitarist Mike Campbell has said that whenever he gets stuck on writing a song, he always asks himself, "what would Keith do ?"
    Since the mid seventies, not only has Mick Jagger led, and sometimes pushed the Stones into different music influences, his gift for expressing emotion over such a range of music styles is unsurpassed for rock singers. The Stones could never have pulled this off if Mick couldn't deliver convincingly in so many different kinds of songs.
    Recently, I realized that together, Keith and Mick form 2 halves of the ultimate singer/songwriter - a guitarist who can outplay any singer, and a singer who can outsing any guitarist. Which is the biggest part of the Stones identity - Mick's voice or Keith's guitar ? It's a trick question - it's a tie.
    Being the Rolling Stones, with so many great songs behind them, must've been a great challenge for Keith and Mick. Many fans unfairly dismiss the Stones post Tattoo You albums. Why are the Rolling Stones the only great musicians held to the standard of their creative peak ?
    Anyone who's dismissed Voodoo Lounge needs to really listen to it again. It's an album that very few bands could equal !

    • @HangFireStonesPodcast
      @HangFireStonesPodcast  2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Great stuff! You're totally right that the glimmers are the ultimate singer/songwriter. Great visualization of that. Amazing they're such a dynamic force for each other. True chemistry!

      @@HangFireStonesPodcast
      Thanks for your kind response, Justin.
      The two biggest things make the Stones the greatest rock and roll band ever:
      1) The collaborative creative relationship between the Glimmers, which you pointed out is usually at its best when Mick helps develop Keith's rough ideas for a song.
      2) The unsurpassed synergy between the five or four band members. A great band is better than the sum of its parts, and no rock and roll band plays together better !
      Scott

    Justin, this is an amazing video and insight into Voodoo Lounge !! Thank you for the crazy effort that a project like this takes !!
    I've been replaying this album (and b-sides) a bunch of times over the last few months and it continues to impress me. There's so many good VL demos and outtakes out there - hopefully some day a Deluxe Edition is released (along with IORR, B&B, and ER 🤞)
    1994/1995 were truly special time for the Stones indeed - so much creativity and great ideas along with the Stripped era. It feels like the members of the Stones feel in love with the band for the first time again in awhile (perhaps the first time since Some Girls since the next few albums after '78 were a strained time for them).
    I miss Charlie :(

    I think the best part of this documentary is at the 40:00 minute mark. The isolated vocals of Keith & Mick on The Worst followed by Ronnie's petal steel solo is phenomenal! Lots of great pic's in this documentary as well. I think spending a lot of time playing the Voodoo Lounge CD Rom, got me very familiar with every song. I think it's a great album. The band was never the same without Bill Wyman. He had a unique touch. Charlie put it best. He was the kind of bassist that you only missed when he stopped playing. But when you listen to his basslines by themselves, they indicate a truly great bassist. What Wyman played as parts within a song, other bassists would use as an entire song. Darryl Jones added something different, great, but different. His stamp on The Stones sound. beauty of the Rolling Stones is that they are never afraid of evolution. And it's worked for them, my favorite band, the GREATEST rocknroll band in the world.

    Muita coisa boa saiu dessas sessões. Voodoo Lounge, que já é um álbum de q gosto muito, poderia ter sido ainda melhor.

    I was hoping to see something for the 50 anniversary of “It’s only rock and roll” like they did with Goat’s Head Soup and Tattoo you

      Nah, imo it is one of their weakest albums, despite a few great tracks. Very much a transitional album.

    This video is amazing. I wish you got it made had made it. Sounded great. Cocaine is amazing also Where can I listen to all these demos ? I remember reading somewhere slash tried to play on a track. Keith told him to piss off lol Does anymore studio footage exist ?

      There were three multi CD albums at least 20 years ago, I think Ron Wood's son stole tapes or something, Voodoo Stew, Voodoo Brew, and Voodoo Residue. The first has the most semi-finished or finished songs

    Charlie's drum sound does sound great on this album. Maybe the best element of the album.

    Micks attitude towards Bill leaving was way out of line, that's a side of Mick I don't like. Bill was awesome.

      It’s not his department to make the replacement recommendations, it’s Keith and Charlie. Plus, when you’re the frontman for the world’s biggest and best band, you can’t show any emotion towards a member leaving, it’s what the media expects.

      Several times Mick has shoved Ronnie on stage. There's also the story from Keith's book about how Charlie got fed up and punched Mick in the face 😂😂 The only one who appeared to stand up to Mick is Keef.

    Wow,what an excellent video. It may just be the best video you've made. Really outstanding work. And I'm with Keith on this one. Why does Mick seem intimidated by Exile? Exile is not my favorite Stones album, although I certainly recognize it's greatness. Plus, I just don't think Voodoo Lounge sounds like Exile in any way. Voodoo Lounge is entirely it's own beast.

    I’ve always like voodoo lounge..but honestly I think that some of the out takes we fleshed out and replaced some of the actual albums songs it would have been much more creative and interesting

      Yeah I agree, and frankly I thought Love is Strong was not a great single. First time a lead single from an album by them bombed....The Storm should have been on the LP too.

  • @davidgangemi3314
    @davidgangemi3314 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

    I remember hearing it a few times and thinking the album was over long with material. It tends to bog down in spots. But the paradigm of cds back then was to put 15 or 16 tracks out instead of trimming the fat and making a concise lp that would serve a band better like in the days of the vinyl format.
    Not to mention that The Stones ran out of top flight hits in the 80s.
    But after 30 years ,no artist can produce with the same brilliance of the first 20 yrs.

    Muita coisa boa ficou de fora do Voodoo dava pra lançar isso em um "novo " album.
