Your statement that Anthony B. Richmond saw Brian Jones shooting up is news to me. I’m not saying it isn’t true but as someone who is very well read on Brian, I’ve never heard this before (used herion and needles). Can you provide the source? I do commend you on your work overall and passion. I also appreciate that you didn’t perpetuate the myth of Brian Jones being a complete mess on the film Sympathy for the Devil. It just didn’t happen like so many have said. While he was there, he was ready to go and nowhere in the film does he look wasted or sitting hours on end tuning a guitar or struggling to put a new reef in his sax or passed out in some corner. It’s a myth that’s spread by folks who never actually watched the film. I dig the Stones (all their periods) and I’m glad your working closer and closer to the Brian Jones years. No doubt he had his struggles, but the guy deserves a better shake then he gets from too many people who only see the Stones as a Mick and Keith outfit. No doubt they are great and fundamental to the bands success, but they also were cut throat SOB’s. Not only with Brian, but Mick Taylor, Jimmy Miller, many of their ladies and most telling - each other. My point, it’s important to shine a light on not only their greatness, but all of the bands and band members warts as well instead of just specific individuals. Cheers mate

My first thought it was NOT heroin, , you assumed it was heroin, so I will stop there. Tony has no reason to lie and fabricate his stories. You can reach out to Tony and ask him again. You can make your own opinions on Brian's state of mind and support his actions, right or wrong. We were not there. but what I compile are statements from many that were. He is not the only person to imply heroin use. Paul McCartney, Keith and Stu have also. After being busted for a 2nd time in May 1968, I think it unlikely Brian would risk being caught with heroin. Booze & over prescribed pills were his thing during his last year... Keith and Stu both agreed on that. Legal highs so to speak, Elvis style.

Steve - I sincerely appreciate your research, compiling, and editing, all the amount of work that went into examining Sympathy for the Devil and surrounding events in Stones lore - Brian, the film, the various players to make it happen, etc. Brilliant! Love the bass, vocal, and guitar separation. The women giggling in the beginning of the song is perfect for what comes after. I'm glad they didn't edit stuff like that out. Hello once more friend, It’s the middle of the night over here Mick lol. It is 4.25am, I’m not sure what time this makes it over there in the ‘big ole USA’. I’m thinking that ‘good evening’ is likely to be appropriate. Thank you for yet another pukka presentation, as usual Mick, a genuinely riveting watch and of course… highly interesting. It’s easily identifiable just how much dedication and hard work goes into making one of these for us geez! I bought the album late - in 1977/1978 or thereabouts (I would be 20yrs old Mick. If I’m honest it was much later in my life when I came to ‘get it’ and appreciate the album. I kinda got to know their music whilst aquatinting myself with Let it Bleed, thinking to myself… ‘ I should’ve b***** well bought this one instead Mick ha!ha! Oh well, hey’ haven’t we all experienced this type of thing at some point in our lives? But there’s a lot in there, if one really listens and gets proper involved. So, it’s thanks again from me over here in sunny SE England (East Sussex as explained in my previous chat Mick re Redlands etc.). @ Flip Side CT Yesss I think so too. This song is just pure genius and out of this galaxy! MidnightRambler has been called a Blues Symphony. I think Keith said that. 1968 in Italy Keith and Mick wrote it in a cafe. This is also a sort of Symphony for woo woo Maybe like a Rock n Roll mamba Symphony. We need to remember they had a rock n rock circus in mind by the end of that year. Their songs around that time I hear them as beautiful genius Rock Symphonies, around that time, if there can be such a thing. BIGGER BETTER and in YOUR FACE and HITTING YOU RIGHT OVER THE HEAD. Who could not notice their music that time ??? Tell me what’s my name !!!! And WOO WOO and that blistering high pitched guitar solo by Keith that just elevates off the record and cuts right through everything!!!! The philosopher Martin Heidegger would be proud of them for his concept of EXISTING AS ‘STANDING OUT IN THE HERE AND NOW! That music does that. It stands out as a genuine thing.

I kept not being able to find it so when I found it last summer I recorded it with my second iPhone. So I can get exactly what it is called for you. Others are easy to find from that same Jam session rehearsal. Tumbling dice Loving Cup Shake your Hips but this one is somehow just out there and hard to retrieve. What the heck....Let me see Googling Montreux Rehearsal 1972 TH-cam should bring it up. If not then add part 3 to it . It starts out slow and then it just blasts off
@ Flip Side CT I had thought you may have not seen the one of those that starts off with Charlie’s drums and is mostly Mick T and Keith weaving on guitars. Mick T is quite good on this one but it isn’t just Solo and Rhythm. It’s definitely them playing together off of each other and weaving a bit. The others come up easily but this one often seems to be missed . And there are no vocals. Keith is sitting at first but as it gets heated up and sizzling Keith stands up to play. Bo-Diddly Guitar sound I think but sounds sooo Stones. Just wasn’t sure if you have observed this particular one. The others I’m sure you have seen. There is another one of Keith mostly playing with no vocals that is rather Bluesy or Jazzy I don’t mean that one. It’s the other one with no vocals. Starts out with a camera view of Charlie’s drums I think. From Greg

@ Flip Side CT This song reminds me of two things RUMBLESTILLSKIN asking the girl if she can guess his name. And around that same era there was the boxer Mahamid Ali yelling on video WHATS MY NAME? What’s my name is a great line. To me kind of those two things come to life in a great rock song.

Although I'm unable to donate any money at this time, I really want to share just how grateful I am - and how much I thoroughly enjoy your presentations. I try to always write and share in the comments how much I love and appreciate your Stones work Steve (I think I called you Mick the last time I wrote in the comments lol). Something I'd like to add here if I may please re Brian and his substance abuse. I've read some time ago that Brian was using Tuinal (Barbiturate). As many of you out there may be aware, anyone using Tuinal will be unable to actually do very much, let alone concentrate enough to play an instrument. I'm just pointing out the difference between the types of drugs. That as Mick once stated... Brian was on the wrong types of drugs. Tuinal are handy for coming down from stimulants etc. - but a person to use them for their primary source of abuse will never be able to get anything much done. Plus, because of being incapable, also get on everyone's nerves. It kinda makes sense looking at Brian's decline I believe. Warm regards and many thanks again, Dave UK

I know of Eli Lilly F66. NEver ever took it. But my NJ druggie crowd in mid 70's were active with these. They told me 1 = a 6 pack of beer. They would take 3 or 4. I have no idea how or why. No idea how anyone can function. I worked in a pharmacy in early 80's and would remove the powder and create placebos for them. Not a proud topic matter, pretty sad when I think about it now. Great work as ever Steve! Jagger was always a big Cricket fan and fancied himself as a medium fast Bowler when younger (with a graceful run up.) I think he is a member of the MCC elitist cricket members club and has always enjoyed the company of "Toffs". Great that you concentrated on such a historic pivotal song from the album. God it might have become a country blues rock sway sound....all that was just on the horizon when they were working their asses off on this. So interesting! Gram came in to their lives summer of 1968 This was June around June 6th wasn’t it. Around 6/6/1968 didn’t it come out on 12/6 too? I’m pretty sure Mick and Keith took DMT the a lot of this year making this album. (Keith’s book). Explains a lot. Became the best band of all time from this album on.

Just found your great channel! Fantastic work. While watching PT2, I noticed that you have a still at 9:27 of a house you identify as Sarum Chase. It's not. This is actually a house in Redington Road (about 300 yds from Sarum Chase) and the picture dates from a time (about 10 years ago at a guess) when it was owned by an actor (his name escapes me!). It was sold to Tim Burton several years ago and has been extensively re-modelled by him. Sarum Chase itself has recently been the subject of extensive works over a number of years & it is now impossible to see very much of the house from the road.

Once again an absolutely wonderful study of the creative process… Well done and congratulations, Steve! Here’s some discussion point observations 1. Although the film “One Plus One” was much derided, it was, up until this year 2023, and the “Get Back” doc., a far more watchable experience of a band working up a song in a London studio than the dark “Let it Be” movie ever was… 2. There’s a big in-joke in the dialogue of the non studio junkyard part of “One Plus One” because, at one point, one of the actors says, in his dialogue, “and I try… and I try… and I try…” clearly quoting “Satisfaction” 3. Bringing it all right up to date, The Rolling Stones 2023 brand new single, “Angry” repeats the formula of Keith playing a pumping bass and also playing a trademark Keith solo prominently… Looking forward to the next instalment!

Even though I wasn't really interested in the Godard part, you kept me with it. The Stones took over my soul on July 26th, 1972 when Channel 5 in NYC showed "Gimme Shelter" twice over the weekend of Jagger’s 29th birthday. What bit into my soul was that I had just been to the barber that day...

Books, Forums, articles, interviews are the starting points. Gathering the details is one thing, going down each topic's rabbit holes the next part. I had to read many articles to dig into Godard's side of things, and get explanations. Not just one article, but many, to make sure it holds truth. A huge challenge and undertaking. I have heard interviews of an author of a book I am reading, David Grann's: The Wager......he went and studied journals and articles on this great book's detail of a shipwreck in 1740 and compiled a book. Same type of model. Nice pick up on Eldridge, glad you are in tune with the details I put out there. The song comments, are just from the heart and ears, and as the musician you know allows us to break it down easily. Yes, our devil's will never subside in humanity. It’s Christmas in September. I just got home and was kinda bummed out after a hot day working all day and what did I find. FLIPST I CK….. so freaking happy. Congrats, its an honor and blessing to have the opportunity to step into a time machine and return to 1968 when I was 21 and to relive the experience of this groundbreaking LP, which for me along with LIB is my ultimate Rolling Stones rush. Your scholarship, research and oratorical commentary are worthy of cinema quality production and I believe that your work should be presented in the media of cinema. It is slightly before this, but I believe Ry Cooder also played on Captain Beefheart's debut album in 1967, "Safe As Milk." I'm not sure if that was the only Beefheart album Cooder contributed to or if he played on the follow-up as well.

@ Steve Flip Side CT I checked the Wikipedia article on Rye Cooder. My prior understanding was that he got involved- they invited him in spring of 1969 but Wiki tells us 1968 and 1969. I think a bit more checking needs to be done on my part. Wiki might have that wrong. I think you have it correct now but I want to check deeper.

It is one of the oddest and unique song creations in their catalog. So unique to watch and hear it evolve. That this was captured by chance on film is kismet. For some strange reason, this is the musical equivalency of Schrödinger's cat in my minds eyes. I can’t explain the why of that? I had only recently seen this footage in the last few years. I would occasionally see it and then it would get yanked quickly. Keith’s bass is pure alchemy, along with Micks supernatural voodoo yowls that conjure up a warning. The guitar slash’s like a blade while that upright piano propels you off the ground. A fantastic part 2 of a truly strange marriage of music and film. You can’t look away as the song is deconstructed from our collective memory and then reassembled and transformed better than before. It’s such a strange experience. It’s so familiar and simultaneously so foreign. Thanks again for a great documentary. You never disappoint! Cheers and big respect for all the hard work and insight. The Godard film truly shows how hard and complex it is to make a powerful original song. The film shows how much time goes into arranging a classic original tune. I love it! I can relate because I too am an original Songwriter and Muzik Producer 🎶

Sympathy is not only my favorite Stones song, but it is my favorite song. At the 35:08 mark, there is like a revelation... someone off camera is noodling some pentatonics for what becomes the guitar solo...and it is not Keith. Is that Brian? Or ? Who else could it be?
I don't speak Russian, but my understanding is that most Russian words have several different meanings. Bulgakov was so brilliant he chose words which could be read on multiple levels, making the Master and Margarita something like three-dimensional chess. There is one English translation (dark red background, profile of a black cat on the cover) which footnotes a vast number of subtexts and double meanings. It's worth seeking out. I thought it was a very good documentary but it seemed to be lacking very much info about the other songs on the album such as no expectations, jigsaw puzzle and factory girl among others. i see you mentioned some of the outtakes of them but didn't mention the finished song and the way they developed them like you did on some of the other ones like Let It Bleed but overall i thought it was exelicent and hope you keep making more.
I love how you deep dive into the inspiration behind the songs and take the care to explain the history and nuance ANDyou do so without losing sight of the narrative

Your statement that Anthony B. Richmond saw Brian Jones shooting up is news to me. I’m not saying it isn’t true but as someone who is very well read on Brian, I’ve never heard this before (used herion and needles). Can you provide the source?
I do commend you on your work overall and passion. I also appreciate that you didn’t perpetuate the myth of Brian Jones being a complete mess on the film Sympathy for the Devil. It just didn’t happen like so many have said. While he was there, he was ready to go and nowhere in the film does he look wasted or sitting hours on end tuning a guitar or struggling to put a new reef in his sax or passed out in some corner. It’s a myth that’s spread by folks who never actually watched the film.
I dig the Stones (all their periods) and I’m glad your working closer and closer to the Brian Jones years. No doubt he had his struggles, but the guy deserves a better shake then he gets from too many people who only see the Stones as a Mick and Keith outfit. No doubt they are great and fundamental to the bands success, but they also were cut throat SOB’s. Not only with Brian, but Mick Taylor, Jimmy Miller, many of their ladies and most telling - each other. My point, it’s important to shine a light on not only their greatness, but all of the bands and band members warts as well instead of just specific individuals. Cheers mate

I bought the album late - in 1977/1978 or thereabouts (I would be 20yrs old Mick. If I’m honest it was much later in my life when I came to ‘get it’ and appreciate the album.
I kinda got to know their music whilst aquatinting myself with Let it Bleed, thinking to myself… ‘ I should’ve b***** well bought this one instead Mick ha!ha! Oh well, hey’ haven’t we all experienced this type of thing at some point in our lives?
But there’s a lot in there, if one really listens and gets proper involved.

I had thought you may have not seen the one of those that starts off with Charlie’s drums and is mostly Mick T and Keith weaving on guitars. Mick T is quite good on this one but it isn’t just Solo and Rhythm. It’s definitely them playing together off of each other and weaving a bit. The others come up easily but this one often seems to be missed . And there are no vocals. Keith is sitting at first but as it gets heated up and sizzling Keith stands up to play.
Bo-Diddly Guitar sound I think but sounds sooo Stones. Just wasn’t sure if you have observed this particular one. The others I’m sure you have seen. There is another one of Keith mostly playing with no vocals that is rather Bluesy or Jazzy I don’t mean that one. It’s the other one with no vocals. Starts out with a camera view of Charlie’s drums I think.

I try to always write and share in the comments how much I love and appreciate your Stones work Steve (I think I called you Mick the last time I wrote in the comments lol).
Something I'd like to add here if I may please re Brian and his substance abuse. I've read some time ago that Brian was using Tuinal (Barbiturate).
As many of you out there may be aware, anyone using Tuinal will be unable to actually do very much, let alone concentrate enough to play an instrument. I'm just pointing out the difference between the types of drugs. That as Mick once stated... Brian was on the wrong types of drugs.
Tuinal are handy for coming down from stimulants etc. - but a person to use them for their primary source of abuse will never be able to get anything much done. Plus, because of being incapable, also get on everyone's nerves.
It kinda makes sense looking at Brian's decline I believe.

I know of Eli Lilly F66. NEver ever took it. But my NJ druggie crowd in mid 70's were active with these. They told me 1 = a 6 pack of beer. They would take 3 or 4. I have no idea how or why. No idea how anyone can function. I worked in a pharmacy in early 80's and would remove the powder and create placebos for them. Not a proud topic matter, pretty sad when I think about it now.

Just found your great channel! Fantastic work. While watching PT2, I noticed that you have a still at 9:27 of a house you identify as Sarum Chase. It's not. This is actually a house in Redington Road (about 300 yds from Sarum Chase) and the picture dates from a time (about 10 years ago at a guess) when it was owned by an actor (his name escapes me!). It was sold to Tim Burton several years ago and has been extensively re-modelled by him. Sarum Chase itself has recently been the subject of extensive works over a number of years & it is now impossible to see very much of the house from the road.

I’ve also seen so many different variations of it on TH-cam also. Now, I really liked the way you presented this one. Even though I wasn't really interested in the Godard part, you kept me with it. The Stones took over my soul on July 26th, 1972 when Channel 5 in NYC showed "Gimme Shelter" twice over the weekend of Jagger’s 29th birthday. What bit into my soul was that I had just been to the barber that day...

Fantastic Steve! I don't know how you unearth all these details. I knew the song was inspired by the book that Marianne turned Mick onto, but the detail you dug up on that is fascinating. Books, Forums, articles, interviews are the starting points. Gathering the details is one thing, going down each topic's rabbit holes the next part. I had to read many articles to dig into Godard's side of things, and get explanations. Not just one article, but many, to make sure it holds truth. A huge challenge and undertaking.
I have heard interviews of an author of a book I am reading, David Grann's: The Wager......he went and studied journals and articles on this great book's detail of a shipwreck in 1740 and compiled a book. Same type of model. Nice pick up on Eldridge, glad you are in tune with the details I put out there.
The song comments, are just from the heart and ears, and as the musician you know allows us to break it down easily.

Congrats, its an honor and blessing to have the opportunity to step into a time machine and return to 1968 when I was 21 and to relive the experience of this groundbreaking LP, which for me along with LIB is my ultimate Rolling Stones rush.
Your scholarship, research and oratorical commentary are worthy of cinema quality production and I believe that your work should be presented in the media of cinema.
I actually enjoyed this piece more that J L Goddard's work.

It is slightly before this, but I believe Ry Cooder also played on Captain Beefheart's debut album in 1967, "Safe As Milk." I'm not sure if that was the only Beefheart album Cooder contributed to or if he played on the follow-up as well.

I checked the Wikipedia article on Rye Cooder.
My prior understanding was that he got involved- they invited him in spring of 1969 but Wiki tells us 1968 and 1969. I think a bit more checking needs to be done on my part. Wiki might have that wrong. I think you have it correct now but I want to check deeper.
I do not depend or use Wiki for any of my research . I would not know what they say. Yes, it was 69' his start. I would say to research Ry's interviews on what he thought and his view.

It is one of the oddest and unique song creations in their catalog. So unique to watch and hear it evolve. That this was captured by chance on film is kismet. For some strange reason, this is the musical equivalency of Schrödinger's cat in my minds eyes. I can’t explain the why of that? I had only recently seen this footage in the last few years. I would occasionally see it and then it would get yanked quickly. Keith’s bass is pure alchemy, along with Micks supernatural voodoo yowls that conjure up a warning. The guitar slash’s like a blade while that upright piano propels you off the ground.
A fantastic part 2 of a truly strange marriage of music and film. You can’t look away as the song is deconstructed from our collective memory and then reassembled and transformed better than before. It’s such a strange experience. It’s so familiar and simultaneously so foreign. Thanks again for a great documentary. You never disappoint! Cheers and big respect for all the hard work and insight. Looking forward to all the parts to come. It was the first RS record I picked up used and it still surprises me every time I play it. Cheers and thanks 🙏

The Godard film truly shows how hard and complex it is to make a powerful original song. The film shows how much time goes into arranging a classic original tune. I love it! I can relate because I too am an original Songwriter and Muzik Producer 🎶

Sympathy is not only my favorite Stones song, but it is my favorite song. At the 35:08 mark, there is like a revelation... someone off camera is noodling some pentatonics for what becomes the guitar solo...and it is not Keith. Is that Brian? Or ? Who else could it be?

I don't speak Russian, but my understanding is that most Russian words have several different meanings. Bulgakov was so brilliant he chose words which could be read on multiple levels, making the Master and Margarita something like three-dimensional chess. There is one English translation (dark red background, profile of a black cat on the cover) which footnotes a vast number of subtexts and double meanings. It's worth seeking out.

I thought it was a very good documentary but it seemed to be lacking very much info about the other songs on the album such as no expectations, jigsaw puzzle and factory girl among others. i see you mentioned some of the outtakes of them but didn't mention the finished song and the way they developed them like you did on some of the other ones like Let It Bleed but overall i thought it was exelicent and hope you keep making more.
