I'm gonna tell you Barry that this video was great I loved it now my favorite album is probably After Math now I just love how you talk about old music and how smart you are about it because you know this generation of music sucks and kids nowadays will never understand the meaning and love of how old music really is so I'm just glad there are people who still know and care about older music because I wish I lived back then so bad I'm the only one in my whole school that loves rock and older music so thank you Barry so much also another thing Mick Jagger will be 76 tomorrow that's crazy anyway just keep doing what your doing Barry I really appreciate it and again thank you for doing what you do

My number one Stones album is Sticky Fingers. All the planets aligned for them on this one. There isn't a duff track on it. It's pure Rolling Stones. Dripping with swagger and taunt, with a lascivious twinkle in the eye. Up to no good, top notch unfettered Rolling Stones. Cock rock at its finest. Brilliant.

I’ve grown to really like Undercover lately. I put it on the other day while doing house work, and I couldn’t stop swinging to it. The stretch from “Too Much Blood” to “All the Way Down” is amazing. It reminded me a lot of the groove of “She’s So Cold”, which is just a lot of fun.

Everyone makes fun of Satanic Majesties Request but I think because it is not just a Rolling Stones-style album, it actually shows how creative, fun and freaky the band could get. The songs are great in their own way, along with being a concept album to poke at the Beatles. Psychedelia is appreciated!

    • @mickcorbett6724

SMR was a great album. Loved all the early Stones. The Jimi Miller produced albums. Those where Mick Taylor played his astonishing virtuoso guitar. Some Girls was brilliant. They always write great songs, but for me a 1950’s child, later albums just don’t do it for me.

I agree completely about Exile on Main Street. It exists as a commentary on and deconstruction of the American musical idioms the Stones grew up on. It captures them throwing the histories of country, blues, gospel, and rockabilly into a mud pit and wrestling with them. Toss in an insane quantity of drugs and booze; the result is brilliant and heartbreaking in it's beauty,

One of my personal favorites , that NEVER gets mentioned much is "Metamorphosis". It's more of a collection of rarities and jams..but I really enjoy it. "Satanic Majesties" seems to take a lot of shit for some reason and gets knocked down - maybe I'm weird, it's one of my favs too. I always thought the Stones should do a tour called ANYTHING BUT THE HITS"...where they play EXACTLY that...ANYTHING but the hits..

To this day, I still am high on the fact that after one listen to Exile the week it came out in the US, I pronounced it the best Stones album, only to find out that on our side of the pond, critics and all my friends shat on it. And I just played it louder and more often. And decades later the place of Exile is not in question. But Beggars is a hard one. It could be number 2 for me. Or 3. or 4. It all depends on the day. Buttons never took for me, nor Undercover. Aftermath could be higher up. Too bad Brian couldn't roll with the punches. He had awesome range musically.
I like Satanic Majesties for #10 on my list. The way I see it, the lads were stoned and having some goofy fun and I can easily align myself with that mood. I think people overthink it, taking themselves to seriously. I like artists that can say, "Yeah that's me. And that's me. And this wacky stuff, that's also me, too. All these moods exist in me in harmony. So, get comfortable and why don't we sing this song all together. . . "

I always enjoy your ranking videos, and this one is another of my favourites. I agree with you on many of the reasons, but I still think that the top two albums for me would be Let It Bleed at number one and Beggar's Banquet at number two. Those two albums were the peak of the Rolling Stones overall career, and after Brian Jones was gone his ingenuity was never replaced. I have loved this band throughout their entire career (even the lousy 1980's shite), but their pinnacle was that period in the late 1960's.

I love Between the Buttons...it's their most English sounding, and top notch pop/rock on the cusp of psychedelia, also Amanda Jones reminds me of the Stones of "72/"73. They seemed to fit right in to the scene, while at the same time experimenting with studio and instrumentation. Jagger has complained about the production, but I think the stereo version is awesome, especially at full blast...

interesting Top10. I would like to mention Bridges To Babylon and Steel Wheels as especially strong albums. Love the 'Just Might Get Juiced' from B.T.B. However the period from '68 to '72 was no doubt the peak of this band's powers.

I bet you can guess what I'm going to say... 1) Thanks for the overview. You give me several albums to check out, when I come across them (your top 3 or 4, I'd say). 2) I wish there were MORE Rolling Stones in surround. And 3)... You will be greatly rewarded if you check out the multichannel (5.1 surround) SACD of Sympathy for the Devil. It's the only studio Rolling Stones in surround. It features the original recording mixed in to 5.1 from the multi-tracks, plus several interesting remixes from various artists, all in surround as well. Quite an interesting listen and one of a kind. I know of no other similar surround singles, per se. Thanks again.

For those who, like me, find their album output outside of the golden years + "their last great album" Some Girls somewhat spotty, can I recommend the Singles Collection: The London Years, a chronologically ordered compilation of all their early A and B sides, I can't remember if it has the odd album cut here and there. Wonderful compilation. I must delve one day into whether any of the latter day compilations are worth having. Even if you're a fan of some of the pre Beggars' Banquet albums, this compilation is an exhilarating listen hearing all those singles back to back. Tails of a bit by the third CD but worth it for the first two.

With Aftermath, I noticed Mothers Little Helper sound mix a lot more uneven and heavy with reverb effects compared to the same song on Through The Past Darkly (aka Big Hits 1969) with a much more even mix.

After doing a deep dive into the Stone's early years, I can say without any hesitation that Brian Jones might just be the most misunderstood and blatantly underrated musician in the history of rock and roll......tragic figure who simply dazzled fellow musicians with his rare talent and vision. 1. Exile On Main Street 2. Sticky Fingers 3. Let It Bleed 4. Beggars Banquet 5. Aftermath 6. Tattoo You 7. Some Girls 8. Emotional Rescue 9. It's Only Rock N Roll 10. Between The Buttons

It's a good list, all the greatest albums are there. Stones are a difficult band to make a list for. I might have included Emotional Rescue because of the excellent Down In The Hole, featuring some of the best and most bluesy Mick Jagger vocals. And Where The Boys Go with the great Charlie Watts drum fills. Also a shout out for the first album. Friends of mine are always bitching about that basically being an album of covers, and that might be true, but the way they did them, raw and aggressive, must have been a big influence on the harder bands that came after. Funny how you mention all songs from Black and Blue, except Melody, an absolute masterpiece, although you could argue it is basically a Billy Preston song with the Stones in attendance ...
You could also do a video of their greatest songs, I'd like to see you try ;) ... Or maybe you already have, I'll take a look ! All the best from Den Haag, Netherlands !

Well done!! I recently had the pleasure of listening to the deluxe edition of Some Girls and was amazed at how well the previously unreleased songs sounded. Hi Barry,
Always a pleasure and just incredibly spoken and described by you.I expect nothing less that is for sure. Your list is pretty much the same as mine. I would not include Between the Buttons... because I am not familiar with it... don't listen to it much. I can understand why you include Undercover of the Night. Love Too Much Blood and She was Hot. I think in Sticky Fingers the Stones have a perfect album... nothing is out of place. Our of the Blue has Memory Motel which strikes a particular chord with me. What to say about Let it Bleed and Exile. I cannot add any more to your video because your appraisal is just exquisite and all encompassing. You are definitely a man after mine own heart musically.
If I can make a request for Classic Album Review.. if you can shine the spotlight on Procol Harum. For me an incredible Prog band... and have at least 5-6 masterpieces. Would be interesting which one you would choose to excavate and explore.
God bless and keep on rocking,
    Tino

Don't know why you didn't include some of the Stones' earlier, blues-influenced albums. The Rolling Stones Now is a classic, and one of my absolute favorites! Also love 12x5 and Out Of Our Heads. Hell, I still get down with December's Children and England's Newest Hitmakers. The Brian Jones years were magical for me! I was just entering adolescence, and music meant everything to me and my friends!

Yeah....we are going to have to agree to disagree about Undercover. Great video!
    Here is my Top Ten:
    10. Between the Buttons----the Stones copy the Beatles moreso here than on Satanic Majesties.
    9. Voodoo Lounge----a little too long, but there's a lot of great stuff here.
    8. Black and Blue-----Ronnie Wood makes his entrance.
    7. Aftermath------Brian stands out and makes a lot of magic.
    6. Tattoo You----even though there's a lot of recycled material, it's the last ESSENTIAL Stones album.
    5. Beggars Banquet------the best of the Brian era, even though he's fading fast.
    4. Let it Bleed------it sounds like a sexy, demonic novel you can't put down.
    3. Sticky Fingers------Mick-the-Taylor brings a new feel and style that worked.
    2. Some Girls-------arguably the most concise record the group ever released.
    1. Exile on Main Street-------this is 67 minutes and 7 seconds of unfiltered sex, drugs and rock and roll.
Honorable mentions: Goats Head Soup, A Bigger Bang, Get Yer Yayas Out
