I have remembered the first three tracks, Sweethearts Together (love ‘em all) and both Keef’s ballads (BC I’m a sucker for Keef’s ballads, like most of us.) The rest was pretty hazy, and what fun it was to rediscover it! Moon Is Up: I sort of vaguely knew that it was a cool track, but it turned up to be just magnificent! Top tier Stones, and their deliberately lo-fi approach here makes the song sound timeless. This is the track that you don’t want to ever end; I wish they explored these grounds more here. Then, shame on me, I kind of forgot about the existence of I Go Wild, which is a nice swaying rocker and omg, how good Charlie is! Suck on a Jugular: I’m on the same page with you here. I love the funky Stones, everything from Hot Stuff to Rain Fall Down. This is the essential track. Darryl’s tasteful licks during the final minute is pure joy. What a musician. I agree with you on Baby Break it Down: a chance wasted, at least partly. Still I have a soft spot for songs where you listen to Mick and hear Keith (if you know what I mean). It wouldn’t be out of place on Main Offender. Then, I will stand up for a song that nobody seems to care about: Brand New Car. The lyrics are silly, but I just love the gorgeous soul-inspired horn section; for me this song falls into the same category of undercooked, but promising stuff.
My ‘black list’: New Faces is awkward and simplistic, Rainbows is a sweet filler to my ears, Mean Disposition imho could be a B-side. But, then, speaking of B-sides: Jump on Top of Me is SO good, and I’ve never heard it before you and Timo mentioned it, thank you guys! Charlie is king, Darryl’s walking bass line makes you wanna jump up and dance, Mick does his best saucy vocals, pedal steel work by Ronnie is a killer. I need this on the album, too!
That isolated vocal when Keith takes the high road on Sweethearts. Wow! Have circled back to Voodoo as of late and it's honestly become one of my Stones favs!
I Go Wild in terms of sheer power, energy, rock n roll, Keith open chords, vibe is up there with all the classics. It's just an explosion of the Stones dynamics where you can throw in any guitar mess, any open G variations and it will still carry the song forward like an unstoppable train.
Justin, your videos of Voodoo Lounge were like receiving a bunch of little gifts, one at a time, that made it all one big extraordinary gift ! It's not just what you did, it's the way you did it. I've researched the Rolling Stones since I was 12, and my favorite part of it has always been learning how their songs were created, who played on it, etc. Your perspective is unique, and you routinely echo my feelings or give me a fresh perspective. I don't know if you can or want to, but I'm into this approach on any other Stones album you'd ever want to explore further ! Great in-depth review! I just love it when the whole band kicks in in Thru and Thru; it's like a beast of great power has awoken and is effortlessly flexing its muscles. And when you said "pick your poison" at the end, I immediately thought that would have been a fine title for a Stones album at some point.
I must chime in- When Keith and the band played "Thru and Thru" in the Oakland Arena Nov 12, 2002 on the Licks tour- The whole Arena was locked in and listening intently. When the tempo of the track increased it seemed to raise the roof with the energy exchange between the band and audience. The Show was recorded, and the Stones had a recording of that performance on their website for awhile. So you knew the Stones knew it was a great performance. However, anyone in that arena that night, no video or audio recording could tap into that magical energy that rippled through the arena that night. "Thru and Thru" is an excellent composition and recorded performance on Voodoo Lounge. I would still love to see that live performance as a bonus track on an expanded Four Flicks BluRay that has been rumored as a possible re-issue now that the exclusivity agreement of the Best Buy DVD edition had expired a few years ago.
So cool. I remember that clip very well and it's on TH-cam now in fact. I love that performance, first one ever if I recall correctly. I think the only time they truly nailed it. Great vibe and power. Lucky you were there!

From his measured vocal delivery...to "F'n Blues" line, to the band kicking in and Keith delivering a tasteful and focused solo. You can hear the crowd express its appreciation without being mic'd up! I saw many Licks tour concerts.....This is still a top highlight never losing its emotional pull at my memory and excitement to have witnessed the performance..
Definitely got me in the Voodoo Lounge spirit this month! Ended up buying an original 94' vinyl pressing after the last video - it's been my first time listening to the album all the way through!
I certainly agree the first half is the strongest on this album, I think the B sides on this album are very strong. I'd actually be fine with some of the lesser songs on the second half being traded for B sides like Jump On Top Of Me and The Storm. My favorite second half tracks are I Go Wild, Thru And Thru and Mean Disposition.
After watching the 2 vids of "Inside Voodoo Lounge" I have come to appreciate the album in a totally different way. I also have revisited Voodoo Lounge a couple of times and listened with a different ear to the songs. One thing that stands out to me is the isolated tracks which give a whole new perspective on some of the songs. I think this album belongs very much to Charlie and his effort on this album. I think he is involved with a lot of the sound on this album. Then again one can't take away the fact that when the Glimmer Twins sits down and write songs together they are crafting a lot better songs than one of them on their own. After following the vids and post here on Hang Fire I have come to appreciate the Stones in a new way and even maybe more than I did before. To me it has always been a feeling I had that the Stones are the greatest band in the world. Nowadays I also have a portion of facts and more knowledge of the Stones. All thanks to the great work of Justin and also other Stones fans that works hard to give us input and background facts about the Stones as a band! So thank so much for your dedicated work and love for the Stones!

Although we agree with the majority of what you stated in this video, I must disagree about blinded by rainbows. I believe that a very underrated song. Something about building up to that last part where he rarely get into the song vocally I think really works. Just my opinion.

Nice job Justin, if the Stones hadn't been experimenters, they wouldn't have created some of the gems that they did, their trail blazers in many ways, they created a sound. Voodoo and Bridges To Babylon I think are outstanding, sonically and the songwriting. Digging the channel, cheers.
Another great episode - love it. Funny how all us have our own personal tastes - that's what makes music so great - how it effects us personally. For me, my two favorite tracks on Voodoo Lounge are two ballads - Out Of Tears and Blinded By Rainbows. I did a full track by track review on my channel as well. I also would have put Jump On Top Of Me on the album.

I see “Suck On The Juggular” a bit differently. Critics bemoaned the Stones’ post-Exile work as no longer informed by traditional blues, as it was more current trends (funk), which they described as “less compelling.” Ok, :"Fingerprint File” threw them for a loop. But that track led to “Hot Stuff,: “Hey Negrita,” “Miss You,” “Everything Is Turning To Gold,” “Dance,”, Emotional Rescue,” “Slave,” “Undercover, “Pretty Beat Up,” “Sex Drive,” etc. Juggler is the next extension of this new tradition for the band. There’s a great playlist to be made with these tracks.
To me it’s one of their best albums. Fell for it right away. Charlie found the garbagecan drumsound again. First half is great but to me the second half is great. Just love this album. Charlie’s masterpiece. Like in Parken Cobenhavn ‘95 concert, Charlie was the most cheered.

I ghost wrote three songs on Voodoo Lounge1987. one song went to steel wheels .Steel wheels song was the best of the four called mixed emotions a word play on Mick Jagger's emotion and see four songs I sent1987 spring. Love is strong you got me rocking out of Tears for the songs I provided . Mick improvised on you got me rocking the most of all those songs the rest came pretty much word for word .Last words I said on tape I sent were whatever you do don't stop. So they made a don't stop song not mine.
Totally agree that “I Go Wild” starts off side C with a nice BANg! Keith can be so fixated and random songs, and then get so worked up over deep cuts. I love Keith he’s funny. Also Keith has the best song on the album
Thank you for another insightful commentary. Great job, I am so glad I found your channel. I am also on team Jugular, my only complaint is the chorus which feels repetitive and monotonous . One aspect of the Stones I appreciate is the discretionary use of profanity but the verbiage here is a bit sophomoric and unnecessary, as is Brand New Car. Hate Rainbows. A depressing, hopeless mockery. Sad on many levels. Always skip . Break it down is in my opinion country, my least favorite genre unless done by the Stones. Love how it gently builds. Merle Haggard does Bolero. Never get tired of it. CD has been in my car for 2 yrs, that song and Sumatra coffee get me to work. What can I say about Thru that hasn’t already been said. Is there any word on a concert movie from the 2024 tour. I loved all the videos, but both the sound and video quality tended to be spotty. I would love a film.
Sadly no word. There were no reports of any extra cameras catching any of the 2024 shows. Yes, they have cameras there for the large screens but that footage doesn't automatically translate to a home viewing experience. They also like extra cameras to capture the activities on stage and in the crowd--none of which were reported at the shows which is a HUGE bummer. Maybe we can expect a Europe show to be filmed---who knows!
Such a great video!!! There are trully flat songs On parts C and D, such as baby break it down (it could be Much better), Brand New car. Thru and Thru is a Classic, despi-te people Love to ignore The late alguns. The guitars are killing On mean deposition. Lets save this track! Hahaha
I should have been more clear. I say "Keith song" as a shorthand for songs Keith had a large part in writing and then handed off to Mick Jagger to sing solely. The songs I listed are those songs, I did not mean the songs he sings for himself which you list.
Don Was - producer had most of the say. Jagger wanted a “groove” album & wasn’t too happy with the result. It really wasn’t a great LP. Far too skanky for me & showed a lack of direction.
There are definitely some good tracks on the second half of this album. In my opinion, blinded by rainbows is terrible and doesn’t deserve to be on this album 🤢🤮 Thru and Thru is the highlight of the second half imo !! Its so great and it reminds me of The Sopranos I was re-listening to The River by Bruce Springsteen earlier and “I Wanna Marry You” gave me “Sweathearts Together” vibes immediately.
I dunno if I'll ever get Blinded by Rainbows! The studio cut of Thru and Thru is solid but don't think he ever nailed it on stage. I gotta check that Bruce track!
I feel like the MVP of Voodoo Lounge is Charlie's snare.

I ghost wrote three songs on Voodoo Lounge1987. one song went to steel wheels .Steel wheels song was the best of the four called mixed emotions a word play on Mick Jagger's emotion and see four songs I sent1987 spring. Love is strong you got me rocking out of Tears for the songs I provided . Mick improvised on you got me rocking the most of all those songs the rest came pretty much word for word .Last words I said on tape I sent were whatever you do don't stop. So they made a don't stop song not mine.
Totally agree that “I Go Wild” starts off side C with a nice BANg!
Keith can be so fixated and random songs, and then get so worked up over deep cuts. I love Keith he’s funny.
Also Keith has the best song on the album
Thru and Thru is a top ten stones song of all time.

I do think Voodoo Lounge is a classic. I love every song on the album. It being 62 minutes long isn't a problem for me. Anyway, great video.

I am also on team Jugular, my only complaint is the chorus which feels repetitive and monotonous . One aspect of the Stones I appreciate is the discretionary use of profanity but the verbiage here is a bit sophomoric and unnecessary, as is Brand New Car.
Hate Rainbows. A depressing, hopeless mockery. Sad on many levels. Always skip .
Break it down is in my opinion country, my least favorite genre unless done by the Stones. Love how it gently builds. Merle Haggard does Bolero. Never get tired of it. CD has been in my car for 2 yrs, that song and Sumatra coffee get me to work.

Is there any word on a concert movie from the 2024 tour. I loved all the videos, but both the sound and video quality tended to be spotty. I would love a film.
Sadly no word. There were no reports of any extra cameras catching any of the 2024 shows. Yes, they have cameras there for the large screens but that footage doesn't automatically translate to a home viewing experience. They also like extra cameras to capture the activities on stage and in the crowd--none of which were reported at the shows which is a HUGE bummer. Maybe we can expect a Europe show to be filmed---who knows!
This is a frustrating album. So close to being the best ever but didn't quite get there. Like a plane taxiing down the runway but never took off.

I go wild is better than any riff that Keith had written since then. He hasn’t written a seriously good riff since 1992 solo album.
Dunno about that. I'd put Flip The Switch, Too Tight, and Driving Too Fast (maybe Whole Wide World) above I Go Wild for cleverness. But that's me ha.
You got some of Keiths songs for each Album wrong. On A Bigger Bang its Infamy an This Place is Empty. And on Hackney diamonds its Tell me straight.
I should have been more clear. I say "Keith song" as a shorthand for songs Keith had a large part in writing and then handed off to Mick Jagger to sing solely. The songs I listed are those songs, I did not mean the songs he sings for himself which you list.

Don Was - producer had most of the say. Jagger wanted a “groove” album & wasn’t too happy with the result. It really wasn’t a great LP. Far too skanky for me & showed a lack of direction.
Blinded By Rainbows is the dumbest song this side of Indian Girl.
There are definitely some good tracks on the second half of this album. In my opinion, blinded by rainbows is terrible and doesn’t deserve to be on this album 🤢🤮
Thru and Thru is the highlight of the second half imo !! Its so great and it reminds me of The Sopranos
I was re-listening to The River by Bruce Springsteen earlier and “I Wanna Marry You” gave me “Sweathearts Together” vibes immediately.
I dunno if I'll ever get Blinded by Rainbows! The studio cut of Thru and Thru is solid but don't think he ever nailed it on stage. I gotta check that Bruce track!
