Violin Concerto in D minor (November 2, 1875)
2nd and 3d movement presumably lost
Claudia Bonfiglioli, violin and the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra conducted by Sakari Oramo
First performed: 10 December in Halle with the composer as soloist. Another major performance occurred on 8 February 1876 in Gewandhaus in Leipzig, where the Gewandhaus Orchestra played under the direction of the orchestra concertmaster and Maier’s teacher, Engelbert Röntgen, also with the composer as soloist. Some sources denote Carl Reinecke as conductor, and he did participate in the concert, although Musikalisches Wochenblatt Jg. 7, 1876, p. 97a states that Röntgen succeeded Reinecke on the baton for the violin concerto, which moreover is reported to be ‘den ersten Satzes eines selbstcomponirten Violinconcert’.
In Leipzig she met the German-Dutch pianist and composer Julius Röntgen (1855-1932), her violin teacher's son. The couple married in 1880 in Landskrona and moved to Amsterdam. The marriage ended Amanda's public appearances, but she continued composing, and the couple arranged musical salons and music performances in Europe of Rubinstein, Joachim and Brahms.
In 1887 Röntgen-Maier became ill with tuberculosis. During her illness, the couple stayed in Nice and Davos. Her final major composition was the piano quartet in E minor on a trip to Norway (to see Edvard Grieg) in 1891. She died in 1894 in Amsterdam, the Netherlands.

One might call it the "Unfinished Violin Concerto" by Amanda Maier, In my opinion it is so complex,
it can well stand on it's own. A great composer, who would have gifted us with many treasures,
had she been 'blessed' with a different fate. Thank you for giving her the well deserved attention.

It shows great influence from Mendelssohn’s Violin Concerto in e minor.

Concerning the cadenza - the version played is the edition of Swedish Musical Heritage, in which a longer cadenza version from the separate violin part by Maier, has been used and restored by editor Klas Gagge. It's all original material.

is reported to be ‘den ersten Satzes eines selbstcomponirten Violinconcert’. Freely translated from the German: the first movement of a Violin Concerto composed by the soloist herself. What happened to the other 2 movements I need to do some research, maybe it is mentioned in the letters of Amanda to Julius Rontgen.

@@bartjebartmans At the premiere she only played one movment. Since it was written and premiered before she officially dated Julius Rönten it is quite possible that it is not mentioned in any letters.

In her letters to Julius she mentions her works. I will read those again and we will know for sure. Did you read the letters?

@@bartjebartmans No, it was just a guess :)
