- Amanda Röntgen-Maier (20 February 1853 - 15 July 1894) was a Swedish violinist and composer. She was the first female graduate in music direction from the Royal College of Music in Stockholm in 1872.

Amanda Maier was born into a musical home in Landskrona and discovered her musical talent early. Her first instruction in violin and piano was from her father. At the age of sixteen, Maier began studying at the Royal College of Music in Stockholm, where she studied violin, organ, piano, cello, composition and harmony.[2]
Maier performed violin concerts in both Sweden and abroad. She continued to study composition with the conservatory teachers Reinecke and Richter in Leipzig and violin from Engelbert Röntgen, concert master at Gewandhaus Orchestra in the same city. During this time she composed a violin sonata, a piano trio and a violin concerto for orchestra. Her violin concerto was premiered in 1875 with Maier as soloist and received good reviews.
In Leipzig she met the German-Dutch pianist and composer Julius Röntgen (1855-1932), her violin teacher's son. The couple married in 1880 in Landskrona and moved to Amsterdam. The marriage ended Amanda's public appearances, but she continued composing, and the couple arranged musical salons and music performances in Europe of Rubinstein, Joachim and Brahms.
In 1887 Röntgen-Maier became ill with tuberculosis. During her illness, the couple stayed in Nice and Davos. Her final major composition was the piano quartet in E minor on a trip to Norway (to see Edvard Grieg) in 1891. She died in 1894 in Amsterdam, the Netherlands. - เพลง
If this sonata had the name of Schumann or Brahms on it, it would be standard repertoire. It's a masterpiece. Period.

I heard the fifth symphony by Emilie Mayer tonight, and was ashamed that I had never heard of her. THE MUSIC WAS BEAUTIFULLY SUBLIME. Now I am on a quest to find the lost female composers of the Romantic era.
I can't believe that we as humans, through our narcissism and egos, have suppressed (and oppressed!) so many beautiful things throughout history!
And based on the way it sounds, it easily could!

The woman composers (especially for strings) are so underestimated till this day, it hurts! I’m glad I’ve found this magnificent piece. Bravo, Maestro! You can hear that her music is inspired by famous male composers and it just makes the piece even more beautiful.
I never heard of this composer, but she's instantly likeable. And her music should be played a lot more than it has and is being.
For quite a while, this sonata has been my favorite violin sonata by any composer not named Brahms.
The piano accompaniment is equally as beautiful and it’s so well balanced. Another lesser famous violin concert that is pleasant to listen to, also easy to play is Alice Tegner’s violin concerto. Thanks for this nice recording!

Wunderschöne und lyrische Interpretation dieser spätromantischen und fein komponierten Sonate im gut phrasierten Tempo mit seidigem Ton der genialen Violine und klarem Klang des ebenso genialen Klaviers. Der zweite Satz klingt besonders schön und echt lyrisch. Einfach erstklassig!

Why does it matter whether or not a composer is male or female? You should be focusing on the music and not what genitals the composer has.
@@elijahminiuk2058 Because its nice to see light come to those who were historically wronged. It is like hearing music from a suppressed culture. True, the music stands on its own in one sense, but in another, the cultural elements around it are even more important.
@@jamesbellamy9328 I understand where you're coming from, but because of all the political correctness going around, I can't keep myself from getting annoyed, as there's always an attack against men. In today's culture, everyone is focused on who the person is instead of their achievement. I think this piece is beautiful, but I don't care about who wrote it. Focus on the art and what it's trying to convey, not what race or gender the creator is.
@@elijahminiuk2058 As a straight white man, I used to agree with this position. Over time though, I sort of came to view it differently. Sometimes its important to highlight the achievements of marginalized groups, because otherwise we'll never live in a world where we actually CAN look past gender and race, at least in a way that isn't really just self-serving to me. Everyone already knows that men can be awesome composers, but ask people to name female composers and they'll draw a blank.
Frankly, that's not just bad for women, but bad for me! I want more music, and having half the population feel like they're coming at a massive cultural disadvantage is bad for that.
@@jamesbellamy9328 There were a ton more Male composers than there were female. Keep in mind men and women are different and have different wants, needs, and desires. That's why you see less women in STEM programs/job positions. It's not because they're being constantly marginalized my misogynists, but because most women aren't interested in these fields. Celebrate the music, painting, story, or discovery, and not through the lenses of identity politics. She's a woman, big deal. I came hear for her music, not due to the fact that she is female, but because she wrote something I happen to enjoy.

Beautiful and highly skillful and graceful use of 6/8 time to propel the music. Love the way the piano accompaniment responds to the violin's constantly melodic flow, and the upper note of each arpeggio also provides an ongoing melody. Thanks for posting this.

It works very well and very playable. Masterpiece? It’s too reserved and safe. It almost feels like a piece written for an amateur performer, teen, or 1st year music major. But with that said, I did enjoy it but have to refrain myself, and be honest, not putting it on a pedestal.
