    I loved the story of the Lost Forty. Old growth forests are a real treasure…so glad this “mistake” happened and that the area is now safe-guarded for the future! Thanks for sharing with us and take care always.

    Cool close up on the tree bark along your hikes. Minnesota is quite the state! HUGE flies are all I remember. ...but your nightmare start feels worse. So dark! Hard to believe there hasn't been a fire in over 100 years. Trees just don't get as big as the California Sequoia, but it's always impressive.

    • @AmericasParks
      @AmericasParks  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Absolutely! Not sure if I mentioned it, but I was inspired by your video the the headwaters. We tried, but as you noticed in this video, were delayed on our first day and ran out of time for the detour to the west.

    Randy, we have really enjoyed these videos with Julie, Shane and you to Minnesota. I had not heard about this “Lost Forty” forest - I always learned when I was Shane’s age that Paul Bunyan cut down every tree in Minnesota! It is very interesting to see old growth pines in Minnesota as they compare to our old growth Douglas Fir, Cedar, and Hemlock in western Washington that can be several hundreds of years old (and over 5 feet in diameter). I think that you and Natalie saw some at Mount Rainier and Olympic National Parks. BTW, we just spent a night at Paradise Lodge at Mount Rainier September 30, encouraged by your trips! And this past week we made a day trip to North Cascades National Park. Now planning an overnight trip to Olympic later this month. Your videos continue to inspire us, and we love that camera on the pole! THANK YOU FOR TAKING US ON THIS HIKE, . . . Mike

      Hi Mike, so wonderful to hear! I'm so thankful you have been entertained and now inspired by the videos to spend some more time at these national gems. Paradise Lodge must have been incredible. Going there is one of my primary motivators for a return trip to the park. All the best to you and your family!

    Yeah that was definitely a rough start to your vacation! A two-hour wait for your rental car 🚗 😮😯😲. The fact that this old growth forest was accidentally spared fromm the loggers is truly a blessing. Yes that place is definitely very special. Thanks for sharing your adventure in Minnesota my friend.

    The Lost 40 is a special gem. It’s unfortunate that you weren’t able to visit the Mississippi headwaters. It’s a striking contrast being able to hop across the river on some stones vs how wide it is just a couple 100 miles to Minneapolis/St. Paul with the large paddleford boats.

    • @AmericasParks

      We had such a lovely time in your home state, Renee! Yeah, unfortunately the delays on day #1 prevented us from our desired stop at the headwaters. Take care!

    Boy, do I enjoy hiking in old growth forests! The story of the lost 40 reminds me of a small growth natural area here in Pennsylvania, Alan Seeger in Rothrock State Forest. There is a small Grove of Eastern Hemlock that was never cut; estimates that some are between 500 and 1000 years old. Supposedly there was a dispute between 2 logging companies over which one held the rights to the tract and they were never cut. No 'swampy story but still a lucky break for those of us that like to go into the woods!

    • @AmericasParks
      @AmericasParks  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey Bob, thanks for sharing that interesting story. Those "misfortunate" situations in the past have benefitted us.

  • @amandal3609

    Funny how the first stop on your " National Park" Road trip is at a National Forest. Just an FYI National Parks and National Forests are 2 Different Organizations. National Forests have the benefit of being free! National Park require a pass.

    • @AmericasParks

    Not the best of starts, day or night but good to see things improved. Green, wet, blowy and swampy, looks a lot like the UK to be honest. Always nice to come across a bench on the trail, especially when you got a great view and a 250 year old tree, that was pretty cool! Cheers Alan

    Wow, lots of issues on this MN, WI, MI trip. Seems like your summer of challenge with that and Washington state. I hope your next trip was/is easier. On my recent California trip, it took me 11 hours to get to LA from Indianapolis and then the car rental place… yeah that’s a story lol. I had a better time this summer when I drove to the Grand Canyon and back. Next one I might just suck it up and drive again. BTW, I yearn to go back to the GC… you were totally right.

    • @AmericasParks
      @AmericasParks  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Right on! Something special about the GC. Never a dull side to traveling. Always plan for more than time allows in my failure to account for these unexpected delays! Makes for good stories though...

    What's that? You DIDN'T like the train whistle in the middle of the night? lol. Rough start, but I am glad the rest of the trip got better (until your cold at the end). What a happy accident that saved this portion of the forest from logging. Thanks for sharing that neat history lesson. Looked like a nice peaceful walk in the forest which was a nice reprieve from all the trials you experienced to start your trip. 😬
    We finished a nice weekend excursion to TN/NC border for our annual fall leave trip. We went to the Roan Highlands in Cherokee National Forest. Just wanted to mention it because it was a beautiful area that you may not have heard of before. The AT passes right through there as well, so we got to hike a few miles on that as well which was neat.

      Thanks, Heather! So sad to hear about those fires in CA. Thankfully, those Sequoias are tough trees if the flames aren't too intense.
