You’re not a failure! Writing a resume is hard, like having to think about what you’ve done? I get it! If you don’t know what to put, try thinking about ANY experiences you’ve had that show you have skills. Skills can be anything from problem solving to quality assurance (this is actually a fancy word for proofreading). Trust me, you have skills! You just have to figure out the way to communicate them :)
I just turned 19 and I'm looking for a job. I feel so weird cause I felt like I should have gotten a job at 18 but didn't because I was focused on college. This is going to be hard to make. All I ever do is clean up after my sisters, make food and babysit.
At least I know I ain’t the only one my parents wanted me to depend on them this whole time but I’m at a point where I feel guilty asking for money from them I rather work for my money than just ask for it. It just doesn’t feel right knowing my parents work tirelessly and hard
I think the things you listed show that you're dependable at the very least, so I wouldn't shy away from including some of them (especially the babysitting experience).

So like...you had the volunteer experience all along and it never occurred to you to write it? Or you watched this video and then it gave you the idea to go and get volunteer experience?
Shii I'm 19 and making a resume and studying computer science really got me wanting to drop out and live off my dad's money for the rest of my life :'(
Dude ur not ALONE!!!! I'm also 19 yrs old, a female, and I've never had a job!!!! I've volunteered a lot in middle school and high school, put some of that in my resumes. I started applying to jobs May 2019 but I've only received one phone call in my life and that happened a few weeks ago. But I missed the call cuz I was sleeping. 😖😣 Not getting calls or emails back makes feel so dumb and worthless, cuz in high school 16 yr olds are getting hired. It upsets me cuz I know I'm STEM smart and a freaking worth something based on my volun. experience. But robots look at our resumes before a real person looks at them to EVEN CONSIDER INNTERVIEWING U!!!!!!!
The money just becomes a crutch though. I live this way and I haven't worked in 6 years. You still have to budget every month like everyone else, and it's not enough money that you can essentially retire. I don't know your family's financial status but at a certain point, you will most likely have to return to the workforce. You have to stay relevant so that if you need to get a job, you can.
1) summary Simple enough :) 2) education Even easier. “Man filling out a resume is easy!” :) 3) achievements I have none 4) volunteer experience I’ve never volunteered. “Okay only 2 I can’t do, no big deal” 5) special skills I don’t know what classifies as “special” but I know how to clean thoroughly, take out trash, dishes, can dig, and maintain the front and back yard of a home. “Doubt any of that’s gonna be useful to apply to a grocery store” 6)professional memberships “Third one blank :( “ 7) language competency I can speak English and have taken three years of German but essentially can only identify about 30 words I honestly don’t know if that’s normal for my first job resume, but I expect to be applying to a lot of places XD
its because if you are applying with a company that screens their resumes through a service or robot, if you don't have keywords you won't even make it to the actual human hiring manager. And sometimes hiring managers completely disregard the resume in just a quick glance of it. kind of discouraging, you have to beat a robot or personality test when you may have really valuable skills.
I am an avid fan of you Prof. Austin. Your videos are real great source of learning. I want to let you know that I even make some of your videos my reference in my own TH-cam videos. I do put a citation of your channel.

This is a really good video it goes really in depth of what I should put a my resume. I was literally so lost until I saw this video, I’m in Highschool and I’m so tired of not having any money. Thanks for the great video!! :^)
Start with summary + objective Mention your Attributes Accomplishments, why are you passionate about the position and industry 2- focus on education and training (as experience) name the school you attended (academic Honors)
what sucks is how hard it is to get a job with no experience, or at least from what i've seen. i've applied to so many jobs and haven't heard back from a single one regardless of when the posting was. i lack experience, so i dont have much to offer when it comes to my resume. i need to have experience for a job, yet i can't get a job without having one for experience? it's a loophole, and im really trying to get through it. i truly would love to have a job, it'd genuinely make me so happy. i'd love to put fourth my effort towards something, make people smile, and earn from it- i have so much free time after school since i always complete my work on time that i end up kinda just sitting in my room trying to manage my boredom. the concept of getting out of the house and getting paid to do stuff? that sounds awesome. i just wish i had experience, but i guess im kinda stuck here struggling. i feel like im going to have to work at a low end store and work my way up- go from a mcdonalds to an olive garden, yk? i'm hoping if i improve my resume by watching tutorials on it that i'll have a better chance, try to show that im worth more than just experience people seem to want- i really do not want to work at a place where i dont feel safe or just uncomfortable at :(
It can be frustrating to not hear back from jobs you've applied for, especially when you lack experience. However, it's not impossible to break into the workforce. My suggestions to improve your chances: Network, gain related experience through volunteering or interning, tailor your resume to fit the job you're applying for, and practice interviewing. Remember, the job market changes and starting at the bottom can lead to learning and growing opportunities. Keep trying, stay motivated and don't hesitate to reach out for further advice.
And what if youve been trapped in an abusive household up until this point and dont know what you like to do and generally dont feel like a person. How do i write down skills or interests when i wasnt allowed to have any...
Hi James! I totally agree that the volunteer experience on a resume is so important. Especially if you don't have a lot of work experience. Thanks for watching!
I'm a 49 year old woman that last child went into a home for disabled adults, I haven't worked sense 2001 shortly before my first son was born. For the last 23 years I have been a wife then just a mother and care giver. I am now looking for employment and having a difficult time most of the experience I have has ether been in house keeping or retail and when the see how long I have been out of work you can tell the wheels are turning. I really hope to get on my feet soon.
My biggest frustration for writing a resume is that my school did not teach it at all which is mind blowing that its even legal to leave out such a thing from basic education. Furthermore the only answer I can find is " Its so easy just write it down" which is infuriating for someone that wants to join the workforce but cant due to lack of education. I never thought that i would need a degree to know basic life skills.

I think my biggest frustration when it comes to writing a resume is not knowing what to put in it. I have written a resume and I have jotted things down but I am not sure if they are effective. That is the biggest struggle with writing a resume; not knowing if what you are writing is effective for an employer's interest. Then again, I have no work experience and I just graduated high school and am age 18. I believe I have a lot to learn.
The nightmare that I'm currently faced with, is that both companies in which I worked, had their employees resign and emigrate, whilst others were what could be termed "global joint venture projects" wherein people from different parts of the globe work together on a project and then leave once it's complete or when one's contract term reaches fulfillment. Now I'm stuck with either deceased, retired or uncontactable references. The experience is there, but I have nobody that a recruiting agent can call to back up the claim on my résumé. I feel uninspired and find job searching pointless, especially with the bias criteria that's set as policy and protocol to follow that serves to sideline others, while allow others a "golden ticket" pass. Such a shame.
Hi, I'm 14 and I'm trying to write my first resume to get my first job but I haven't done any volunteer work and I don't have any professional memberships. Is that a problem or do I just leave that stuff out of my resume?
Today first time I watched your video and I fall for your voice. The only reason of subscribing your channel is that please please please help me to sound as beautiful as you do 🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻

Would you recommend adding in short-term volunteer? I have volunteer experience; however I don't know if I should include them on my resume, since many of them were short-term events. Convention gig 1: 37 hours during 1 week. Convention gig 2: 16 hours during 3 days, University move-in crew: 6 hours during 2 days, and language tutoring: 3 months.

I’m going into freshman year and those where both done in 7th grade so if your school has clubs that do volunteering, join!!!!
I’m writing a resume today to apply for a job that I’ve been hunting. This videos is still useful! Thank you!
I'm just now starting out, and I have no guidance from my family. Thank you for making these videos.
You are so welcome!
I told them I have done landscaping work and that help a lot and I got the job!!
Thank you so much for this video! I am a 21 year old university student with no work experience and very little volunteering experience. I really want to start workining soon.
Hi there! Thanks for watching. Follow the steps I share in the video and download the template and you'll do great. I wish you the very best.

Great tips for writing a resume with little work experience..hadn't thought of volunteer and special skills experience.
Hi! Thanks for watching. Yes, volunteer experience and special skills are the perfect items to add to resume when you have little work experience.
So like...you had the volunteer experience all along and it never occurred to you to write it? Or you watched this video and then it gave you the idea to go and get volunteer experience?
Yes I agree!!!!
Not getting calls or emails back makes feel so dumb and worthless, cuz in high school 16 yr olds are getting hired. It upsets me cuz I know I'm STEM smart and a freaking worth something based on my volun. experience. But robots look at our resumes before a real person looks at them to EVEN CONSIDER INNTERVIEWING U!!!!!!!
19 yrs Old here, it’s frustrating to make resume when I actually don’t know myself.
1) summary
Simple enough :)
2) education
Even easier. “Man filling out a resume is easy!” :)
3) achievements
I have none
4) volunteer experience
I’ve never volunteered. “Okay only 2 I can’t do, no big deal”
5) special skills
I don’t know what classifies as “special” but I know how to clean thoroughly, take out trash, dishes, can dig, and maintain the front and back yard of a home. “Doubt any of that’s gonna be useful to apply to a grocery store”
6)professional memberships
“Third one blank :( “
7) language competency
I can speak English and have taken three years of German but essentially can only identify about 30 words
I honestly don’t know if that’s normal for my first job resume, but I expect to be applying to a lot of places XD
Very helpful and concise! Thank you! The visual examples of your resume sample helped a lot.
This video hits the nail on the head!
Thanks so much! Loving all of your comment.
I'm helping my 13 year old son to build a resume! He wants to work so bad! So I'll download this! Thank you Heather.
Perfect! The resume template will be a great start for your son.
Thank you so much I have been pushing back writing a resume for 3 months now but because of this video I did it straight away. Thank you so much
My biggest frustration with resumes is they have very little practical purpose anymore.
Why do you think they aren't practical anymore ?
its because if you are applying with a company that screens their resumes through a service or robot, if you don't have keywords you won't even make it to the actual human hiring manager. And sometimes hiring managers completely disregard the resume in just a quick glance of it. kind of discouraging, you have to beat a robot or personality test when you may have really valuable skills.
You serious? Damn
@@StarlingofAzerath did not know that, wow...

Great tips, I'll have to share this video with my boys. Thanks for sharing, cheers!
Super cool Adriana! Glad you enjoyed this video about how to write a resume with little or no experience.
what sucks is how hard it is to get a job with no experience, or at least from what i've seen. i've applied to so many jobs and haven't heard back from a single one regardless of when the posting was. i lack experience, so i dont have much to offer when it comes to my resume. i need to have experience for a job, yet i can't get a job without having one for experience? it's a loophole, and im really trying to get through it. i truly would love to have a job, it'd genuinely make me so happy. i'd love to put fourth my effort towards something, make people smile, and earn from it- i have so much free time after school since i always complete my work on time that i end up kinda just sitting in my room trying to manage my boredom. the concept of getting out of the house and getting paid to do stuff? that sounds awesome. i just wish i had experience, but i guess im kinda stuck here struggling. i feel like im going to have to work at a low end store and work my way up- go from a mcdonalds to an olive garden, yk? i'm hoping if i improve my resume by watching tutorials on it that i'll have a better chance, try to show that im worth more than just experience people seem to want- i really do not want to work at a place where i dont feel safe or just uncomfortable at :(
It can be frustrating to not hear back from jobs you've applied for, especially when you lack experience.
My biggest frustration is anxiety.
Very Informative. Thanks for sharing the valuable information.
And what if youve been trapped in an abusive household up until this point and dont know what you like to do and generally dont feel like a person.
How do i write down skills or interests when i wasnt allowed to have any...
The volunteer experience section is really, really important...great tips, Heather!
Great video. Now I know more about how to write a resume with little or no work experience.
Does anyone notice that the selected achievement in the sample is just a list of "nothing" but written in a more beautiful way?!
thank you so much! It's really helpful!
I have not written a resume in a very long time so this video is very very good. Thanks for sharing!

Does helping your parents do housework or errands count for something in skills? plus I have never done much volunteer work, I never joined any kind of clubs in high school.
Yes, helping your parents count. Can you find volunteer work?
@@ProfessorHeatherAustin haven't found any.
Thank you so much your info is spot on and well worth the time watching ...again thank you so much!

Hi Christina, thank you for watching this video. Resume writing is something a lot of people struggle with. Just trying to streamline the process.

Keep your head up.
God bless you for making so many informational voids its really helpful, thanks for being awesome.
Hi, I'm 14 and I'm trying to write my first resume to get my first job but I haven't done any volunteer work and I don't have any professional memberships. Is that a problem or do I just leave that stuff out of my resume?
Today first time I watched your video and I fall for your voice. The only reason of subscribing your channel is that please please please help me to sound as beautiful as you do 🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻
My problem is that most of my skills arent related to my job in general so i just look like any other run of the mill medtech kid trying to apply for a job

Great video for a resume starter.
Glad you think so. 😊
Defiantly, no reason not to. Just don't give more details than necessary if you think it barely 'counts'.
