  • In this video Kelsey and I talk about the Tamworth Pig. Often referred to as the Bacon Breed we discuss why they are called that and how to get more bacon from a Tamworth pig. We show some comparisons between Tamworth X Hereford cross and pure Tamworth feeder pigs which highlight the faster growth rate and Hereford characteristics that dominate when crossed with the Tamworth breed. Also, we talk about some general temperament characteristics of the Tamworth Breed and our other breeding pigs.

    About Sweet Briar Farm
We are a small farm located in Central/Northern Michigan. We farm every inch of our 6 acres. We breed Registered Dairy Goats, Dexter Cattle, and Heritage Hogs. Clean healthy food is important to us and we like to produce the majority of our food on the farm and we grow and raise enough to sell to local customers. Producing our own food also means we forage for wild edibles such as mushrooms and tap our maple trees in the spring to make maple syrup. In 2019 we added honeybees to the farm and have had as many as 30 active hives producing honey for us.
Our goats include Nubian goats, Mini Nubians, Fainting Goats, and Nigerian Dwarf goats.
Our Heritage Hogs include: registered Berkshires, Tamworth, Kune Kune, and Hereford.

So much good information. I would never know about the difference in breeds of pigs. I'll have to watch this again when I can sit and read your comments. Thanks for sharing.

Tamworth seem to be a longer snout pig but all your pigs are a great temperament, is that because you handle them from young piglets ?? Are you ever worried about going in the pen with so many ?? I a only 5ft 2inches & about 120 lbs so I would be. Cheers Denise- Australia

We had Mangalitsa pigs for awhile and they were pushy and would bite our legs. One of the Tamworth sows was very protective. Our boars are like puppies they are the friendliest pigs. We settled for the Herefords since the Hereford sows have proven to be the most docile.

Get some! (Bacon!) Here's a comment to help out all your stats. Also were gonna be getting into Mangas, berks and crosses this upcoming spring, so I'll be keeping up on all your videos!

Mangalitsa bacon was the best we ever had. Ours had bad temperaments so we ate them. We crossed a Tamworth to our Berkshire boar and will be growing some out for spring pork. Hereford has been our overall favorite so far. Thanks for watching!

@Sweet Briar Farm hereford as far as temperament? And did you get the mangas as piglets and they still had bad temperaments? I'm planning on getting a boar and 4 sows as piglets, raising them and breeding them, and then fattening up their piglets for meat. But the plan is to also go up and check out the farm I'm getting them from and see the temperaments of sire and dam as well.

@@plainandsimple1 that’s a good plan. We got our mangas as weaned piglets. The people we got them from had 2 sows and a boar. They seemed like they had good temperaments. Ours just got pushy and bitey to not only us but the other pigs as well.
Hereford are the most docile. Our sow Sally is the laziest pig but also an excellent mother. We always say we want whatever she is on.😄

Does one grey pig have a missing right eye?

We never had one with a missing eye. This is an old video I do remember we had one with a face injury at one time due to being stepped on by mom.
