    About Sweet Briar Farm
    We are a small farm located in Central/Northern Michigan. We farm every inch of our 6 acres. We breed Registered Dairy Goats, Dexter Cattle, and Heritage Hogs. Clean healthy food is important to us and we like to produce the majority of our food on the farm and we grow and raise enough to sell to local customers. Producing our own food also means we forage for wild edibles such as mushrooms and tap our maple trees in the spring to make maple syrup. In 2019 we added honeybees to the farm and have had as many as 30 active hives producing honey for us.
    Our goats include Nubian goats, Mini Nubians, Fainting Goats, and Nigerian Dwarf goats.
    Our Heritage Hogs include: registered Berkshires, Tamworth, Registered Kune Kune, and Hereford.

      I don’t think I have things like hog panels in this video. I am going to make a new video in a month after we take a group to butcher. This is from last year.

    Thanks for the cost breakdown! We are 4 months in with $6500 in our 7 cows, ~$1500 in fencing, and our oversized horse trailer cost $3500 a few years ago. When we look at the property taxes we save with our Ag "exemption" it seems reasonable, but otherwise it hurts when you put it down on paper! 😂😢

    What does the whole A1&A2 and A2&A2 thing mean with Dexter cows?

    • @SweetBriarFarmMichigan
      @SweetBriarFarmMichigan  10 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      It’s genes for the beta casein milk protein. A2/A2 is sought after for family milk cows since those proteins are supposedly easier to digest by some people.

    How does your herd do on the amount of pasture you have? How many can you stock per acre, grass and hay only or grain too?

    • @SweetBriarFarmMichigan
      @SweetBriarFarmMichigan  6 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      They do just fine. What they have access to is enough to keep them clean in the summer and a snack. We are hoping to purchase some land from a neighbor soon.
      We only recently started giving about 1.5 lbs of grain a day. Not because they need it but to see if it would cut down on the hay consumption. You can put 1-2 dexters per acre of high quality pasture. With our current program they only micro graze seasonally.

    • @SweetBriarFarmMichigan
      @SweetBriarFarmMichigan  10 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      People do offer stud services with their bulls. Or you can AI them. We have heard mixed results when doing AI. We prefer to keep a bull since Dexter bulls are typically easy keepers and efficient at getting the job done.

  • @socal33
    @socal33 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

    Registration is just another way people put their hands in your pockets for money and status in order to sell you the cow. I get it, but it's not really our thing on a hobby farm. We started our Dexter journey a few months ago with our first heifer and calf, and a bull. No registration. But if you can't see it's a Dexter, then go find a registered one and pay more.

    • @SweetBriarFarmMichigan
      @SweetBriarFarmMichigan  10 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      We don’t. Most of what our cattle eat is hay that we buy in. We are fortunate to be able to buy in lots of high quality hay from nearby farms. We do manage small pastures, graze cattle in crop residues, and cover crop with winter rye with the cows love.

    So! I think I may have the solution to our buying any more cows and pigs!! We agree to force ourselves to borrow each others' trailers! Yup! It wont matter that you'll have more room to fill using our 28 foot goose neck because you'll have to drive clear out to Montana to get it and vice versa!! Also, our rig had the axles turned over so the trailer sits up much higher in the air because the first owners used it to haul horses into the back country for hunting. Dexters could never jump high enough to get into our trailer and our cattle would be baffled at yours being smaller so they would refuse to go in. There ya go! Problem solved! 🤣😂

    • @SweetBriarFarmMichigan
      @SweetBriarFarmMichigan  ปีที่แล้ว +1

    • @SweetBriarFarmMichigan
      @SweetBriarFarmMichigan  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Only if our bull was heterozygous polled could any of the horned or heterozygous polled cows and heifers have horned calves. Depending on the cows genetics and the bulls genetics lead to different possible outcomes. But it is genetically not possible for any of our cows to calve animals with horns since our bull is homozygous polled. Meaning he has two copies of the polled gene and is a dominant trait.
