I like your perspective on personality differences between lard and bacon types. Berkshires, the black Poland Chinas and Mangalitsa were easygoing and amicable. The Tamworths were very feral and alert. They seemed to keep their distance. Didnt see any reason to play with the kids or interact with us in non food related context. Lard pigs let our girls ride them and turn them into zebras with washable markers.

I got two mixed breed slow growing heritage pigs - I always wondered about their weird gate and lack of muscle tone!!!
What does the pot-belly conformation indicate?
    Thanks for the information :)

A 'mixed breed' is not a heritage livestock, even though the parent breeds were heritage. It applies to all types of livestock. It's not to say that they are in anyway inferior, infact they have what we call "hybrid vigor", but they are not heritage.

Spotted Poland China was one of the breeds of lard hog when I was in FFA, in high school in 1970. The pork industry was changing to lean hog production at that time. Durocs were a favored breed in the lean category.

I’ve been looking into raising both Mulefoot and GOS and I read the old spots are usually very fatty on the lard size but I guess I’ll need to make sure with the breeder I go to. I prefer fatty meat and id like to render lard

Dad raised hogs in the early 1900s. He taught me that a meat hog will have a thinner butt, lard hogs will have a fat butt. He claimed that of all the breeds, the Hampshire was the very best tasting pork, that may have changed over the past 100 years.

Idaho Pasture Pig could be placed in the lard category.

A lot of what you are saying is inaccurate to an extent. Most all pigs used to have the curved top line. That shows youth and expansion. Lean breeds also were never extreme muscled like you see now. People lying and crossing in Pietrain is where these undesirable traits come from in lean breeds. Mostly contributed to the show industry as well as a lot of commercial operation. That is also where the stress gene comes from. The reason lard breeds still maintain a real pig structure is because they haven’t been tainted like the lean breeds.
