Surprise! Hereford Sow had Piglets!

In this video we were surprised to come home to feed the pigs and find a fresh litter of Tamworth/Hereford cross piglets in the pen. This is Sally’s (Hereford sow) second litter. She is an excellent mom! We of course were not ready and had to finish setting up the farrowing pen.

About Sweet Briar Farm
We are a small farm located in Central/Northern Michigan. We farm every inch of our 6 acres. We breed Registered Dairy Goats, Dexter Cattle, and Heritage Hogs. Clean healthy food is important to us and we like to produce the majority of our food on the farm and we grow and raise enough to sell to local customers. Producing our own food also means we forage for wild edibles such as mushrooms and tap our maple trees in the spring to make maple syrup. In 2019 we added honeybees to the farm and have had as many as 30 active hives producing honey for us.
Our goats include Nubian goats, Mini Nubians, Fainting Goats, and Nigerian Dwarf goats.
Our Heritage Hogs include: registered Berkshires, Tamworth, Kune Kune, and Hereford.

In another video, it sounded like you may be planning to take one of your boars to the butcher. I have seen it written that the meat can taste of "Boar Taint". If you have taken a boar in, have you experienced an off or bad taste to the meat?

We haven’t butchered a boar. We sold our Tamworth boar a few months ago and we will sell our current Berkshire boar early next year. But boar taint is something some boars will have that gives the meat an off flavor. I have heard some people will have a boar turned into sausage or plain grind for dog food.
