      I believe very strongly that obedience is an essential part of the Christian life. But very often it is preached, "believe in your heart, confess with your mouth ... you shall be saved", and of course it is true, because it is in the Bible, however, it bothered me that it was necessary to know as a precursor, that if you believe in Him, then you will obey Him. Without adding this part, the message would seem incomplete, or watered down. But from what you so beautifully explained, hear/believe/obey is wrapped 🫔 up together in that word. It adds more understanding to "My sheep hear my voice" -- of course, in my heart I knew that obey was included in hear, but you confirmed it for me with your knowledge. Thank you! 🙏😊

    Good insight here, I have a question for you... what are your thoughts on the translation of the ESV? The ESV is my go to but I fall back to the KJV when necessary.

    I'm curious about your thoughts on the inclusion of The Shepherd of Hermas & The Epistle of Barnabas in the Codex Sinaiticus. I have listened to The Epistle of Barnabas several times. I've listened to some of the Shepherd of Hermas. I find them both intriguing. I find your Apocrypha series fascinating.

      As a lover of all biblical texts, I find the “Epistle of Barnabas” to be of immense value, especially given its inclusion in the Codex Sinaiticus. The fact that this manuscript, one of the oldest and most significant Christian texts, preserves writings like the Epistle of Barnabas adds further weight to its historical and theological significance, even if many reject it as part of the canonical Bible.
      For me, these writings serve as important windows into the early church’s understanding of faith, doctrine, and the evolving relationship between Christianity and Judaism. I believe texts like the “Epistle of Barnabas” and “Shepherd of Hermas” offer rich insight into how early Christians wrestled with the foundational elements of the faith. Its preservation in such an important manuscript only deepens its value, and I approach it with a sense of appreciation, even if it is not universally accepted as part of the biblical canon. These texts, for me, are part of the broader conversation within early Christianity that shaped the faith as we know it today.

    I don't think the KJV translators were entering a Hebrew mindset. They sometimes translated other sources, and the most prominent one they use is the Vulgate. It has _qui autem incredulus est Filio,_ which would come into English as the same as the KJV.
    They did this also in Hos 6.5 where they avoided the MT "hewed" and chose a Targum which read "shewed." This was changed in the 1769 edition to "hewed." So it would be consistent with their methods to choose a translational source as an authority. I was lazy and lifted that example from the front matter of the New Cambridge Paragraph Bible.
    For the relation of faith and works, this is also not a Hebrew mindset thing, but it's integral to the Gospel. Matthew Bates has a wonderful book called _Salvation by Allegiance Alone_ that chronicles how faith involved far more than just belief for both Greeks and Jews. For my part, I'd say "obeyeth" is both more faithful to the Greek and emphasizes the sense of the verb πιστεύω better (following the research in Bates' book for that).

    I personally prefer the theological / philosophical interpretation of the 1611 KJV but the Geneva Bible is not wrong. Ultimately The Holy Spirit must give you understanding.

    • @gclmedia
      @gclmedia  22 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      Exactly! The Geneva Bible isn’t wrong at all-it really comes down to what we’re seeking in the translation we choose to read and study. The challenge is that many Bible readers assume 'the Bible is just the Bible,' without understanding the translation philosophy behind their chosen version.

    The word is Spirit which is action. Believing and obeying are synonymous. What do we believe about Jesus that gives us eternal/everlasting life? That he died for the sins of the whole world and that he takes away sin because of God's love and mercy for us. Believing this is obeying. That's why the theif on the cross next to Jesus was saved that day without any other work of faith being done.
    John 16:8 And when he is come, he will reprove the world of sin, and of righteousness, and of judgment:9 Of sin, because they believe not on me;
