    Capt Sullenberger is amazing. He never hogged all the glory for himself. He shared credit with his crew, ATC, the ferryboat captains and crew and the "scuba cops". If there would have been casualties, I'm sure he would have taken all the blame. That is the mark of a true leader. The world needs more people like that.

      I have had the honour of speaking to hundreds of War Veterans, perfectly ordinary people, yuo would think, until they jumped up and ran through enemy fire to save a friend, capture a strongpoint or whatever was necessary. And the most common phrase I heard from nearly every single one was "I/We did the job that was required." Best definition of Courage I ever heard. "Doing the job required whilst scared Sh*tless". From a veteran who had a small crimson ribbon on the left hand side of his group. (as I looked at it) I`ll trust he knew what he was talking about.

Needless to say, we watched the recovery as many Americans did, with absolute amazement and admiration of the air crew and rescue efforts. One thing that seems to stand out to me is the coordination of the stewards in the cabin. The moment they heard brace, they went into action and started the chant of "Brace, Brace, Brace, Head down, Stay down!" And kept it up until moment of impact. Then immediately went into evacuation mode. This was in fact a perfectly coordinated effort that saved lives. Captain Sully said it best. "We all did our jobs".

    The photo at the end, where they're standing on the wings, gives a feeling like it's over. Now they are safe. They only feel that way because the crew is keeping them calm. The air temp that day was 20* f. The water, 38* f. It wasn't shown in the movie, but NY and NJ ferry boats went and plucked them ,very quickly, off of the plane. A short time later, it sunk. The ferry boats were also big time heroes here. I'm watching this, holed up in our NJ house because of C19. A happy ending to a NY story. The ferrys, and the crew of that plane will always say that they just did their job. True heroes.

    • @lynskyrd
      @lynskyrd 3 ปีที่แล้ว +13

      That's what Sully was trying to convey to the NTSB girl... it was a TEAM effort... except- the girl had a point- remove 'X' from the equation- the math fails. I don't think Jeff had enough experience and forethought to even turn on the APU let alone land that plane. He's a MUCH better pilot now though and he could definitely handle it or something similar TODAY. But yes, getting back to the NYC first responders- A+ for sure. The passengers were great too.
      The other thing that amazed me- Sullenberger only talked to ATC enough to concisely explain the situation, listen to options then declare his intentions. He didn't get involved with too much back and forth chatter with ATC. He followed the main 3 rules... Aviate, Navigate, Communicate. - absolutely well done.

      Suisfonia Agreed! That is the one that has annoyed me the most with this movie is the made up villain role of the NTSB. • @Suisfonia
      @Suisfonia 3 ปีที่แล้ว +12

      @@thedesertrat_9514 That's the problem with society, they look at these documovies and think that everything in them is actually how it happened. They forget that Hollywood likes to exaggerate or even change up events in order to create more drama in order for a movie to last longer.
      That's fine when it comes to a *fictional* setting with *fictional* characters. However, if the movie is based off a REAL event, then don't make shit up and falsify the events.
      The actual, REAL, documentary on what transpired after this event showed how the NTSB really acted. They had nothing but phrase for the captain, his co-pilot and the crew and the event that brought his plane down is now used in training simulators as an example of what can happen with a bird strike.

      Suisfonia It’s scary too because I’d imagine there are people out there who want to be pilots that actually think they can face prosecution from the NTSB. They have criticized countries in the past like Brazil and Japan for doing that.

    After the captain makes the call to brace for impact, you can hear the flight attendants in the cabin reciting 'Brace, brace, brace! Heads down! Stay down!'. It's very quiet and subtle. Brilliantly adds to the understanding of the tension the flight crew must feel. They are doing what they are supposed to which is throwing everything they can at the problem which is very mechanical, but this subtle audio is a constant subliminal reminder of the lives in the back. A brilliant nuance in the scene.

He trusted that his flight crew had seen to the passengers, but as the Captain he had to make sure. It would go against every fiber of human survival instinct to walk up and down the aisle calmly as the river consumed the aircraft, but that is exactly what he did.

      The NTSB determined that it WAS possible to land at Tetorboro even with both engines INOP. However, under the extreme emotional stress of knowing that BOTH engines had failed at sub-5000 feet of altitude in the middle of one of the most densely populated areas in the world, trying to quickly calculate that they could (barely) make it to Tetorboro is unfeasible for a pair of humans in that situation. Making the immediate decision to go to Teterboro after immediately determining that both engines were irrevocably lost AND having about 90 secs to make those decisions is completely unfeasible.
      As such, they not only agreed that Sully's quick thinking was the best course of action at the time and saved every soul on board, but commended him and the rest of the crew for it and applauded them.

I remember hearing Deb Lee Furness (Mrs Hugh Jackman) talk of seeing it from the window of their condo near the Hudson, and how terrified everyone was of so many souls in the freezing water. My dad was in the Air Force during Vietnam. He had been flying since he was 16 but his eyesight wouldn't let him fly for the military. When he got out he was hired by TWA and retired as a Captain in 2001. I firmly believe there are many "Sullys" sitting in cockpits. An all-engines out water landing ...you only get one shot. Keep the nose up and the wings as level as possible (and pray). I was always taught to have respect for the pilots and flight attendants. We put our lives in their hands. We depend on their professionalism and the mechanical soundness of the aircraft to get us from point A to point B safely.

    I love the SNL skit he played as Sully coming back to fly and realized he had to fly as co-pilot. Then kept reminding everyone who he was.

    Being married to an ex Air Force pilot, current delta captain at the time of this occurrence I was so proud of Sully and cry every time I watch this and could see my husband doing the exact same thing! He was a great pilot!! Too bad he sucked as a husband and we divorced, but gotta give kudos where they are due!!

    On days like those, in the worst of times, the Spirit of NY and America really comes through. If you haven't watched the videos, everyone that day was spectacular. I noticed the Ferry Captains, the skill and timing they used to approach the plane, onboard the passengers, is nothing short of miraculous.

    Miracle on the Hudson and rightfully so. He was the right guy at the right time no doubt. Instinctively he did the classic, aviate, navigate, communicate. At the time there was no formal training for a low altitude dual engine failure but now it’s practiced. A very very rare scenario and this guys training and understanding of the situation at whole allowed him to make the correct sequence of choices in seconds that saved everyone.

    When i was a kid we used to fly trans-atlantic every summer, usually to Europe then Israel. In the early days it was a TWA 707 but pretty quick it became 747's accross the board. I realize the 777 and 787 are much more efficient, but stories like this quickly remind me that when all you see 30k feet below is ocean water for 1,000 miles in each direction, having 4 engines just feels much more warm & fuzzy than only two.

    I remember as a country we were still reeling from 9-11 and we needed a hero, someone to bring our faith in people, in God ( whatever your God is) we , especially all those on the flight, needed a hero. We were blessed with Sully and the entire flight crew. Still brings tears to my eyes....
