Peggy has Alzheimer's and can't remember Steve. Every time he visits her she "discovers" that Steve is alive.
Even in the middle of a conversation she suddenly resets and starts all over.
But he comes back every day, and has the same conversation again and again and again and again.....
Which is probably why Steve fights SO hard for Bucky, and is SO desperate for Bucky to remember.

21:00 Bucky was fighting so hard, to deny knowing Steve, because if he admitted to himself that he remembers him, he would also have to admit that he remembers everything -- *everything* that he has done, as the Winter Soldier. That's a whole bunch of truth he really does not want.

  • @craigsetf

I never drew a connection between both Peggy and Bucky struggling to remember and stay connected to Steve before watching this. The last 2 people he has left from his old life. Still the best MCU film able to stand on its own in my opinion. Love the reactions! Can't wait for the next.

    • @kevincola3184

Agreed, I think The Winter Soldier is one of the greatest of the MCU films both in terms of the acting, the action scenes and the plot. Also I love that there are strong themes and even criticisms of Government Surveillance, Covert Intelligence Agencies, etc.

    • @aztex_juan

Guardians of the Galaxy is better tbh

    • @kevincola3184
      @kevincola3184 3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

@@aztex_juan I would say that Guardians of the Galaxy is slightly great in overall quality compared to The Winter Soldier. Although GotG does have a good combination of cool and stylish action sequences and a pretty good comedic tone, the emotional moments interweaved within the story was what made Guardians into an amazing film rather than a good film.
Both films have good plots, witty and/or smart dialogue along with generally superb action. In terms of relevant themes/motifs, The Winter Soldier has several plot points and themes that actually serve as very relevant social commentary about the nature of Power, Corruption, Surveillance and other current issues.
Guardians is more focused on learning to grow and creating/maintaining friendships and family among very different and troubled characters.
Additionally, the concept of Love, whether romantic, familial or platonic is intrinsically important in GotG Volumes 1 and 2.
Sorry for the rambling in this post but I'm just trying to explain what I think about these movies and now I think they're both equally fantastic films, just in different ways, lol.

He could discuss events from 20 years ago without a problem, but forget what he ate an hour ago, or what day it was. But the real hit was to his emotional maturity and impulse control. Temper tantrums, stubborn sulkiness, and completely inappropriate language would be common on his bad days, and as things advanced, the bad days came more often. Basically, he became an 80 year old four year old.

This film didn't just make Steve Rodgers a relatable character (from once being a walking stereotype), it also completely revolutionised the MCU. Every film before this was essentially a modern superhero movie, well produced. This proved that the superheros could just be characters in other genres.
Guardians would solidify that, then Ant-Man. Now, Marvel are freely throwing genres out there, knowing that it can and will work.

Alright, let’s do this one last time
We will NEVER hear those words after this movie
    He is 100% human. He's 200% human
Jumping from that height and hitting the water is like hitting cement. You would die on impact
This is Natasha's natural state. She's better at the stealth missions than the out in the open fights. She's been trained to be a spy since she was 7
It's not an old lady. It's Hayley Atwell, but with CGI. She didn't wear any makeup
She's not dead but she has Alzheimer's
They're not against Fury. They're politicians. They have their own agendas. They want everything to go their way and not anyone else's
The directors of the movie have confirmed that the person driving the yellow trucks is Frank Castle, the Punisher
(Did you know who the winter soldier is before watching the movie?)
The laser Fury used was actually developed by an engineer named Leopold Fitz and he calls it a Mouse Hole. He talks about it in the Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D episode that comes out after this movie
The janitor was restocking the vending machine
7:26 We never see this scene again. NEVER
The metal is Vibrabnium. It absorbs and holds kinetic energy. It's also the strongest metal on earth
When Natasha said "Shall we play a game" she was talking about the movie War Games
When Zola was talking about history being "changed" there was a brief picture of Howard Stark. It was a newspaper article with the date December 16, 1991. This is very important in the next Captain America movie
People had a concern that in Avengers 1, Tony hacked into SHIELD and was able to see everything. Wouldn't he have seen Hydra? The reason he didn't was because Hydra didn't store anything on SHIELD computers. They had their own they could access
That is the FALCON-XO1 wingsuit. It's designed for Pararescue. They fly in and save wounded soldiers
That electric disc is called the Widows Bite. You can guess why it has that name
The scene where the Winter Soldier punches Cap's shield is taken straight from the comics. It is a literal panel in the comics. So is 15:32
The fuel for the wings would weigh as much as the wings or even more, and the design is not the best for the purpose. The wings themselves add nothing
Tony will design better wings later
Many people will say that the Winter Soldiers theme is a remix of Bucky's scream from when he fell from the train, but it's not. The theme is the music composer screaming multiple times and mixing those together
    Fury doesn't but Natasha does
My favorite line from this movie is "Two sides of the same coin that's no longer currency" I love it because it means, that for every good, there's evil. Every Yin has it's Yang. But in the end, they no longer matter because they are irrelevant

Yeah my grandmother had Alzheimer's and the scene with Peggy always makes me tear up remembering those real moments. Forgetting who the people around her are just in mid moment. It's heartbreaking and real. Worse was seeing her awareness that something was wrong at the mid-point of her illness, knowing that she was losing herself. Than watching my grandfather stay with her until the end, even when at the end she would rave at him, only seeing him and the rest of her family as dangerous strangers.

9:17 "And who hired this guy? Because he was hired by SHIELD. Someone from SHIELD hired him. Who? THIS guy."
12:42 "That's all the milk? That's all the milk you poured in the glass?"
13:25 (groans) "I just hate that dude. I hate both of them. Look at them. Look. Look-look at that PIG face."
17:43 Pierce: "I guess I've got the floor." Duaffy: "I guess he's got the high ground."
19:52 "Wait -- why? Wait! Fury, you can shoot him. You don't have anything on you, just ptff. That's it. Over. What the hell was that? Who made the script?"
25:28 "The only guess I could make -- and I'm almost sure that I'm 100% wrong about it -- is that it's coming from something similar to the Tesseract, like another stone?"
    Literally nailed it.

Most of the MCU is characterized by the darkness and internal suffering of Tony. One thing I love about this movie it shows, Steve's story is pretty damn dark too. Lose your best friend, frozen for a lifetime and missing your love, reconnecting over and over because your love has alzheimers, and then find out your best friend(basically brother) is still alive and he later on almost beats you to death.

I just watched a reaction to Captain America: The First Avenger right before watching this, and I noticed an Easter egg regarding Arnim Zola's (computerized German geneticist) appearance in this movie - in that first film, the audience first sees the character's face as a distorted reflection in a 1940s cathode ray tube screen. Took me 10 years to realize that...

The HYDRA scientist in the hidden facility, Arnim Zola, was a long-running adversary of Cap's in the comics. While in the comics many of Cap's WWII enemies, like Red Skull, survived WWII, Zola did not, but instead had his mind transferred into an android body. When Zola escapes from the facility where Cap rescued Bucky in the first Cap movie, one of the papers Zola grabs before fleeing was a blueprint for that android body. In the MCU, they just had him become an AI directing HYDRA's infiltration of SHIELD instead.

I feel I can't say much about how I felt the first time I watched this movie, because I am rather spoiler-resistant - that is, I don't mind spoilers and am known to read up on a movie before seeing it. In the case of this movie, it was more than that, I knew in general terms what the plot was for a good few years because I read fanfic (and I don't mind going into a fandom I haven't seen the canon for) and knew almost all the main plot beats by the time I made myself sit down and watch it last year. Hell, I even knew of fun things like the Murder Strut (how Bucky walks after he jumps off the bridge onto a car, during the whole street fight) thanks to crack videos here on TH-cam - in fact it's actually little things like how Nat has a betrayed look after Fury says he couldn't trust anyone that were the surprises for me.
But even with how I don't mind being spoiled before seeing movies, I love this one because it's got such a government conspiracy thriller feel to it and I love that, and it's also one of the mainstays of my main fanfic ship, Stucky.
