      heck yeah - there is a view you can do a "swap timeline and viewer" to see the actual cuts - I skipped this to shave time on the tutorial, but you can find it in the keyboard shortcuts command page up.

      @@CreativeVideoTips Now my next question is, is there a way to have the markers from your timeline show up in the source monitor so you can quickly go to those locations to make the subclips?

    The way I like best is going to sourcetape on the cut page, cutting my selects, then you can drag all the clips into your bins creating subclips. Only caveat is if you have two subclips from the same clip they will share a thumbail. I haven't found any way to set the thumbnail from the in point yet, at least not all at once.

  • @JimRobinson-colors
    @JimRobinson-colors 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

    I think subclips is a great organizational method and all your tips are excellent. People that have never used them before should be aware that the subclips are only clips that still require the original clip to continue working. It is not trimming big clips, it's just making easier to find what you need.
    If you delete or move the original master clip of the subclips. They all stop working. And if you apply somethings that applies to the whole clip like superscale etc. it will apply to the whole amount of footage - if applied using the parameters. I would suggest that if the goal is to make smaller projects or grabbing just the small amount of footage from long takes etc. That a better idea might be to use the Media Management ( under the file menu ) and save trimmed media - which even works with Raw footage. I think that is underutilized for setting up a project.
    I like your new studio there. Looks great.

    • @CreativeVideoTips
      @CreativeVideoTips  4 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      Hi Jim, that's an interesting thought on using Media Management on the front end of a project and really good call on needing the master clips around. Next time I teach on subclips I'll remember to include that important note.
      You always have good insight so thanks for chiming in. Best to you!

    • @chadmillercolor
      @chadmillercolor 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Jim I agree that Media Management is another great way to trim some "fat", and I am a huge fan of media management!!.. You do lose the ability to get back the full extents, but can render with handles.... Regarding Moving Files... Sub-clips can be relinked... but yes... do not delete masters. Good Call! I was confused regarding your comment about super sampling and the like however.. "Applied using the parameters"? Wasn't sure what you mean by that, ( pretty sure I get it now), but I can say that Sub-clips do not inherit Clip Attributes, nor inspector parameters, once they are created.. It may be an order of operations thing? (actually retested.. If you apply Clip attributes or the like, Prior to making the sub-clip... They will get inherited upon creation.. but they can be edited independently post creation.. ). I haven't found anything from a master clip that affects the sub clips after they are created... Maybe this behavior has been updated? Do you have an example? Cheers Jim!

    • @JimRobinson-colors
      @JimRobinson-colors 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@chadmillercolor You might be right. I remember using subclips many years ago and when doing something on the subclip it would affect the whole clip. I think that most likely is not the case. I mentioned superscale because it was one of the things that would bog a system down on long clips and using it with a subclip it would apply it to the master clip ( all of it ) and take forever to render.
      It was bad, so probably is something they fixed. I wonder if remote grading affects all the subclips taken from the same master. I guess I'll test that if I have some time.

    The problem with Davinci's 1.) Create Subtitles or 2.) Transcribe audio is if you have done one or the other and then, Made all the Corections, (there willbe many) in say the subtitles then generate a Transcription of the same thing all the Previous Mistakes made by Davinci are all there again so you can spend ours correcting the same mistakes made in subtitles and do it all overagain on the Transcribtion. If one of either a 'Transcripttion' or 'Create subitles from Audio' has been done and any corrections been made that then when generating the other the Previous corrections should be automatically be acccomplished and not have be accomplished all over again.

    Another tip for subclips. Useful feature of DaVinci - it Superscale, but it works on the file level, even if you need only one clip, it will apply to all clips from whole file, and on top of that it will take a lot of time to render. But it possible to apply superscale to subclip. Not very convenient, but it solves the problem.

    I was all about Subclips.
    But since "Pancake editing" (stacking one timeline with all in+out clips on top + and at the bottom is my real timeline where I edit, so I drag and drop clips to it) - I was thinking this performs just like Subclips, but I just drag them from the top timeline instead of from the Media Pool.
    Am I missing something? (Apart from maybe some Fusion benefits of having that clip as a Subclip)

    Perhaps off-topic but perhaps you can help. In Avid you shortcut add video or add audio with CMD Y or CMD U, but I don't see a way to add these shortcuts to Resolve. It seems you can only reassign or modify commands but not create new ones. There isn't a command for Add Video or Add Audio--you have to do the dreaded right click. If there is a way to add a shortcut to adding video and audio tracks, I'd love to know it. Thanks.

    • @CreativeVideoTips
      @CreativeVideoTips  4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Hi you are right there isn't. However there is a feature called "place on top" - for me this command replaces the need for that shortcut. F12 is the default. Place on top auto creates new tracks while doing the edit. For sound it places under to lower tracks. Keyboard maestro is the other way to do this but really place on top is what I would suggest.
