I think a killer improvement that BMD can do is to allow assigning any timeline you choose as your Source Tape in the Cut Page. That way, we can bypass setting any additional keyboard shortcuts to swap timelines or shift focus on the Edit Page and make that Source Tape feature (and those Source/Timeline buttons on the Speed Editor) have better use by allowing us to use it for our selects, for example. Basically, allow us to customize our Source Tape. Having markers and auto-transcriptions shown on the custom Source Tape would be a massive plus, too. Also as a sidenote, if BMD can add a one-click solution to combine split WAVs into polyphonic WAVs in the Media Pool, that'd be amazing. All the cheap multitrack audio recorders out in the market (e.g. Zoom H4/H5/H6/Tascam DR-60DmkII/70D) don't have any options to export poly WAVs, and I've been going in circles with Wave Agent and Batch Rename just to prep and combine my audio for syncing to video.
When you sync audio and append tracks you can select multiple files and link them to a clip entirely in the metadata of a video take. You can also manually do it with the audio>waveform window in the media page and the link button. So while it's still a good idea to have properly labelled audio, you can still link without going to those extra steps.
I have editing with transcripts for over 25 years. I just had to do it manually. Mark my In & Out and make a sub clip and rename it with the actual quote from the transcript. Then I would use the search to find to edit it in. This is absolutely wonderful what BM has done.

It would be great if they made a standalone text editor (like their Proxy Generator) that a client could download, and then they could fully do a rough edit from the transcript, that would be able to be applied to the video timeline.
I tried out 18.5 for a couple of days but had to roll it back to the non-beta version. There seem to be a ton of issues in the color page right now as well as other miscellaneous quirks. I can’t wait to try a more polished version of this as the new features were extremely good but I didn’t get to try.
Hi chadwick, great video. My feature request besides the one you already stated is to have more export options in the transcribe editor. Options to export with timecodes in it instead of just a slab of text. Even add options toe export as srt, stl, xml, csv or Avid DS text.
For sure, you need the ability to correct the transcript where needed. When you both create and (within Resolve) export the transcript it would be great (as it is done in Speedscribe and Rev) to separate the interviewer and Interviewee using their names (your director's name or the character as you choose and is automatically synced to all in the interview); each section of dialogue is attributed to the speaker. I'd like to end up with a shareable text transcript in this way, with the beginning of each passage of dialogue marked by its timecode. I'd also like Resolve to automatically create low-res video clips with corresponding timecode burnt in (and uploaded to the Black Magic Cloud server or Google Drive etc). This will allow the producer and/or director to have both the video clip with TC and the Resolve transcribed text to review and make notes for the editor, selecting the strongest takes as a team etc. If the Black Magic Cloud could show you both TC burned in video beside the transcription like Rev and Speedscriber, that allows notes and highlights by each creative team member that would be fantastic. Perhaps the Cloud could also select and make sub-clips that can be exported back to the editor as XML's that you create a new timeline as producer selects/comments for example. Lots of potential. Basically offer all the same functionality of Speedscriber and Rev, yet all the editing power of Resolve to take advantage of the AI, and save producers and editor hundreds if not thousands of dollars if the simply buy the full version of Resolve, instead of paying .25 cents to 1.50 per minute of transcription to these services. When you have 40 - 60+ hours of interviews, that's a huge cost saver as far as editing time and transcription costs. Great stuff Black Magic!
What transcribe requires is the ability to correct transcriber errors in spelling. This would allow for local accents, place names, and barely comprehensible speakers. Being able to export correct, markup a transcription using text editor tools, and then re-import and synchronise with the Resolve transcription would be a fantastic upgrade to the tool. Alternatively allowing spelling correction learning and addition of a spelling checklist would facilitate generating key word searches, and captions far far easier. The AI could then correct itself when it mistakes for example kayak for carjack -highly annoying when editing a video on water sports. Worse yet when Auckland gets confused with Oakland, or Ockland in a travel documentary.
I would also love to have the AI text also be able to populate markers. That would make life so much more easier. Chadwick... I'm having difficulties deselecting the text after it is highlighted in the transcription window. It is probably very simple... but at the same time not so obvious. Thanks for the amazing content. I can't count how many times I've worked on a project and had your videos opened at the same time. Great stuff!
Well done Chad for getting stuck in, I can't go to the beta yet cos im in the middle of a job. This is the standard way I edit and now has extra functionality with the text function. I think this editing style, which is common among professional editors could be accommodated in a better way by Dave. I've been keen to tell them. But now I see you demonstrating it I really hope they watch and understand. Using your selections timeline as source just makes sense and it wasn't until I understood how to do this in Dave that I felt comfortable with the editing side of things. I find myself using the speed editor quite a bit these days in the cut pages. Though mouse and keyboard combo is hard to beat for speed, the speed editor is good fun to trim with and love banging assembly edits together with it. The next voice to text feature will reduce the time a "paper edit" takes to construct on the timeline, again great for creating assembly edits at a ridiculous pace. Hopefully these tool will lend some time to the postproduction allowing more time to finesse and craft. Keep it up, great stuff.
Maybe this is possible but I haven't found it yet, I'm doing my first edit in 18.5 with transcription (I've transcribed the timeline like here, not the source media). I've used it in Premiere for quite a while. In Premiere when you click on a word in the transcription window it places the playhead right there in the timeline. This is so useful. In Resolve when I click a word or select text it just kinda highlights that section in the timeline but doesn't move the playhead and I have to scroll around the timeline to find where it is. My method is to 'pancake edit' where I have stacked timelines, one on top of the other, and pull down my selects into the edit timeline.
Have you figured out how to edit the transcribed text from within the transcription window? Doesn't seem to be an obvious way to correct any transcription errors. (without first converting to captions then editing the captions, which is cumbersome)
Great question Brad. I don’t think this is possible yet but I hope it will be in the next beta. I have heard that this feature was kind of rushed to show at Nab so I expect it to develop more soon.
Thnx, that helped me a lot! On top of what you asked for for the markers to include the selected text. I really wuld like DR to give us the possibility to mark several IN and OUT Points on one clip! And if then it would include the text on this select, wow what an acceleration of editing long documentaries!
Would you be able to make a video explaining the new "Transcribe as Nested Clip" feature, and explain the differences between the Source and Timeline view in the Transcription window? To me the nested options feel buggy (ie sometimes the transcript is completely different to the audio), but perhaps I'm just misunderstanding it. Also the new "Transcribe Missing Clips In Timeline" and the automatic "Create Subtitles from Audio"... Great tutorials!
...also interesting to note that Locking an audio track clears the transcript... kind of odd behavior - clearing the transcript when muted makes sense, but not locking.
This was very helpful indeed. I tried to append the transcript from one timeline to the end of said timeline, and it just didnt do anything. Your workaround works great however! Thanks a lot, and finally a way to work quickly with documentary material!
Thanks for this man. It's pretty clunky working with timeline based transcriptions right now. They could pull some inspiration with how easy and clean it is in Premiere. I may just change my workflow so that each clip in my timeline has synced audio attached to it, before bringing it into a timeline. That way I can just do clip based transcripts.
Yeah, not sure why people are going crazy for this right now, it's super barebones and it's still much better to do captioning and subtitling in Premiere sadly, it's missing some basic implementation
Can you dock the text window somewhere? And also, can you leave the timeline focused so that you don't have to keep re-focusing on the timeline to make edits? Premiere does this as default, it's much more convenient.
You can't dock it right now. I would imagine that has to be coming. Switch to timeline after edit is at the bottom of the edit menu. You can toggle the behavior with this check box. :)
I always thought that text editing meant you could just highlight words and delete the parts you want out. i.e. do a search for Umm and just ripple delete them as you step through the timeline. Is that possible now? Same with grabbing sentences and just move them in the text editor to where they make more sense etc.
That is how descript works but not the new resolve feature. Resolve is just pick what you want and cut it in. There is no timecode included in the text file export.
@@CreativeVideoTips This is why I would love to see them take this tech and create a whole new page focused on text based editing, like script or story driven page. So you could do what you are doing here, but on a more focused layout and design.
@@avdpost That would be awesome. Imagine editing the text and have the video edited in real time as you delete words. Or type the word you're looking for and have the software give you a few options where that word was said in the interview so that you can insert.
@@pooyanmanoochehry2629 Yah I mean I use Descript now quite a bit on docs for that reason and just roundtrip the XML back to Resolve for editing. But built in would be incredible.
Nice workflow. Not sure if you noticed but you can also transcribe multi camera clips which is super useful but the transcribe timer box thingy stalls but will finish if you leave it (on Windows anyway).
Yes as of 18.5. Just multi select them and option x. I had to reset my keyboard for that command for it to work but it does. The command is clear in and out.
Amazing! Hopefully Blackmagic makes this workflow even simpler with a few command tweaks. Better integration with the interface would be nice also. Seems like a possible great fit for the Cut page.
Man, you are the Best! what about do a video on the best workflow in DaVinci Resolve, what I mean is, classifies the main types of operation and highlight which type of operation you should better do before another one to avoid "closed roads" or waste of time Perhaps the other day in my last video on this my channel I have used the magic mask to remove and substitute the background after have cutted and edited the clips, but who knows maybe would have been better to make the magic mask before and edit after...
Thank u veryyyy much! Have a question. I cannot use the audio of the video because of the timecode. I sync with the mics. How Can I choose the video with the audio in sync, instead of the original audio?
Feature request…what if you are filming two or more people talking? How can you distinguish between people in the audio transcription? It would be good to be able to add names…without altering timecode/duration. You can do this in Trint for example. Would be very useful to have this feature in DR.
It really is. I don’t know if a way to run both though. I have been just using 18.5 on my personal laptop that does not have client work that’s critical. It is still beta and I have seen a couple non critical bugs. Hopefully the beta period isn’t too long.
Hi Dan, I am only a hobbyist. At first, when I would revisit an old project 18.5 would ask me whether I was happy to upgrade the project . I said yes Last two days it has stopped asking and has also started crashing a bit when I try to generate subtitles I am on NVidia GTX1070 7 y-o PC with 32Gig memory normally fast and stable I am trying generating optimized media to see if that helps. Nope, still crashes on old Canon 550D footage even when optimized. I expect there will be a point release within a week or so that will make it more stable
I like the naming structure of the audio on your FX3 footage. Was that done in camera, or metadata manipulation in Resolve? Do you have a video discussing it that I've missed?
2 Questions: Is it possible to cut and paste the text in the Transcript window and have it do the same to the footage on the Timeline? Can you export the Transcription with Timecode? Both could be helpful for cutting / arranging interviews.
Great video Chadwick. Is there is a way to cut whole sentecences and phrases in that text window and sort of rough edit the video by 'text editing' alone.? Then when youve cut it you could listen back and tweak the edits in the timeline if bits of speech were cut off too abruptly
@CreativeVideoTips Chad, what if we have 2 cams? we should put both synchronized on the Transcribe Me timeline so we cut them together, correct? because if done late it became very complex to sync once they are cut...
Great video! Idea: I think Blackmagic should add an auto cut silences with the next update like what the software 'Recut' does. That would be amazing to shorten the selection time process on top of what the new transcript feature already does.
Thanks for the kind words. I have no clue if Hindi will be supported in the future. I have tested with a Spanish interview and strangely it did a Spanish to English translation for transcription. (for about a paragraph, then it just said speaking in foreign language). Captions and clip based transcription would not work at all with Spanish. This is just a guess, but I would imagine all major languages will get support in future versions - but I have no clue how the backend of this works quite yet.
Hi. Thank you for your response. I. Just saw it Also, unfortunately, it seems like blackmagic has left us in a soup. There is no hindi or other most spoken languages and not even version 19 launched in December 2023. Seems they BMD people attained all the attention and now don't want to put similar attempts as they now became famous alternative for PP. That's a shame. 😮
The transcribe feature seems to skip over umms and uhhs. I'd love to be able to read through and chop out all of the ephemeral vocalisations. Seems like that's what takes the most time in editing my content.
As a newbie to video editing in Resolve (coming from Final Cut Pro), I'm still trying to get my head around this - why would I want timeline-to-timeline editing? What's wrong with editing from clips to timeline? Is it mainly for things like doing sub-edits of already edited footage? For example, if I've edited together a 30-second ad, and I need some 15-second versions, or just top-and-tailed versions, editing from the main timeline to the sub-edits? Is that what this is all about?
A lot of us oldies began editing back in the days of tape where instead of clips there was a long "tape" with all the clips on it. Editing from timelines is a way to recreate that workflow, which for us is a lot faster and feels more organic :)
I will do another video in the future on that but it is found under the timeline drop down menu to create subtitles automatically. It will ask you how long you want each subtitle to be and the language.
@@CreativeVideoTips Thx and sorry, I just realized that transcription is different from subtitles and that you never mentioned anything about subtitles. Great vid!!!!!
I have 18.5 Studio Beta on PC and don't see that magic button. I can right click on the timeline to transcribe it. But am I missing a setting to make that button you use visible? Or is it Mac only?
Cannot find the answer! I've watched countless videos and I can't seem to find the answer I am looking for. Videos taken from my phone are very choppy while editing. The only way I've found that works is to optimize media, but the problem is that it takes up way too much storage space and takes hours to optimize multiple clips. Videos taken on my camcorder have no problem. If I convert my videos prior to editing will it help? Is there anything I can do besides optimize media to work around this problem? Thanks for your content! I hope you are able to get back to me.
hi there - you want to create prores proxy media at 1080p resolution - this will playback nicely and while it will require more storage it is not super big I have an older tutorial on here about better playback using proxies.
This is cool BUT I would like to create markers from those selections and I can... but the problem I'm running into is that those markers don't show on the timeline ANYWHERE. It's almost like a subclip when you create a marker. I want to see the marker, click on the marker in the timeline and play it. Not click on the sub clip like option underneath my timeline where markers normally show. That's probably confusing but if you try to create a marker from the transcribe, you'll see what I mean.
Love your Channel! I just upgraded to DR 18.6 (After backing up my databases) and my latest timelines only show up as folders with another folder inside that reads "Batch Renders" and it's empty:( I'm on a M1 mac. ) Would you know a fix please?
Another feature request: apply voice isolation on clip level just as you can turn on equalisation Why: That would help transcription to be more accurate with bad audio (Coming from FCPX, they have it, but they lack the transcription)
When I edit from the transcription text window, the window disappears. Even when I hit the transcribe audio button on the interface, or select transcribe audio on the right click menu again, the transcription window does not reappear. Does anyone have this issue, or know how to pull up the transcription window again?
When I try to use the Key Customization to change the (Swap Timeline & Source Viewer Ctrl + PgUp x +) to the Tab Key it tells me Tab is already assigned to Playback>Play around/to>Play around current frame. Question do you Eliminate the Original Key Combination or just add TAB to the Original Key Combo?

I can't count how many times I've worked on a project and had your videos opened at the same time. Great stuff!
Great presentation. Thanks so much.
Thanks for watching!
Nice work I do have a question. Do you have any videos that you teats on how to get smooth skin tones with sharp edges?
Great suggestion for the text going to the markers. The best way to get them to respond is to make a post in the forums.
Fantastic as always man 🤟🙏🏻
Can you dock the text window somewhere? And also, can you leave the timeline focused so that you don't have to keep re-focusing on the timeline to make edits? Premiere does this as default, it's much more convenient.
You can't dock it right now. I would imagine that has to be coming. Switch to timeline after edit is at the bottom of the edit menu. You can toggle the behavior with this check box. :)
@@CreativeVideoTips Yup, that's what I thought. Thanks.
@@avdpost I love that idea.
🥳 Thank you ! Always on point.
Great workflow. Is it only available in English so far? Is it using Whisper from Open AI?
Thanks Lestyn, I’m not actually sure if it’s only English. For Captions you can choose other languages but there isn’t that option for transcriptions.
@@CreativeVideoTips more languages will be added later 😉
@@CreativeVideoTips what if you try transcribing a Spanish or French clip, maybe it auto detects the language like what ChatGPT does?
Thanks. Great video. Does DaVinci has any easy way to do auto subtitles ?
It’s sure does. It’s under the timeline menu to start auto subtitles. This is a studio only feature though.
@@CreativeVideoTips thanks man. I will check it out.
Nice workflow. Not sure if you noticed but you can also transcribe multi camera clips which is super useful but the transcribe timer box thingy stalls but will finish if you leave it (on Windows anyway).
10:03 quick recap of the process
Another great vid!
Is there a way to clear all in and outs in all clips in a bin.?
Yes as of 18.5. Just multi select them and option x. I had to reset my keyboard for that command for it to work but it does. The command is clear in and out.
@@CreativeVideoTips Ok I had a different key command for that that matches another nle.. I guess I will have to change will try.
Ok I cleared the command and re input mine which is G and it works!
Amazing! Hopefully Blackmagic makes this workflow even simpler with a few command tweaks. Better integration with the interface would be nice also. Seems like a possible great fit for the Cut page.
Would love to see how / if this works for multicam clips..I for one can't figure it out...
Man, you are the Best!
what about do a video on the best workflow in DaVinci Resolve, what I mean is, classifies the main types of operation and highlight which type of operation you should better do before another one to avoid "closed roads" or waste of time
Perhaps the other day in my last video on this my channel I have used the magic mask to remove and substitute the background after have cutted and edited the clips, but who knows maybe would have been better to make the magic mask before and edit after...
Is this feature available for the "free" version?
Great question, I wish I had mentioned this, but it is not in the free version. Basically, anything "AI" ish in resolve is only in the paid version.
does someone know what song is playing in the intro? I just love how it makes such a strong start into the video
Can you d this method with Multicam clip?
Thank u veryyyy much! Have a question. I cannot use the audio of the video because of the timecode. I sync with the mics. How Can I choose the video with the audio in sync, instead of the original audio?
Feature request…what if you are filming two or more people talking? How can you distinguish between people in the audio transcription? It would be good to be able to add names…without altering timecode/duration. You can do this in Trint for example. Would be very useful to have this feature in DR.
Now Resolve includes Speaker Detection!
Man that’s cool..can you install 18.5 to test and still use 18.1 for client work? As always yours videos are so useful
I said yes
Last two days it has stopped asking and has also started crashing a bit when I try to generate subtitles
I am on NVidia GTX1070 7 y-o PC with 32Gig memory normally fast and stable
I am trying generating optimized media to see if that helps. Nope, still crashes on old Canon 550D footage even when optimized.
I expect there will be a point release within a week or so that will make it more stable
This REALLY convinces me to buy the studio version, damn, gotta save up.
Check out a bundle deal with the speed editor.
@@grantsutton8727 is it on the balckmagic store page?
@@Truck_Kun_Driver I see the speed editor is priced at $395usd and should come with a Studio license.
Send them an email to check.

I like the naming structure of the audio on your FX3 footage. Was that done in camera, or metadata manipulation in Resolve?
Do you have a video discussing it that I've missed?
ohhh I see that It is linked audio from a MixPre! My bad! Im sure the audio files were named in the Wingman app
2 Questions:
Is it possible to cut and paste the text in the Transcript window and have it do the same to the footage on the Timeline?
Can you export the Transcription with Timecode?
Both could be helpful for cutting / arranging interviews.
Great video Chadwick.
Is there is a way to cut whole sentecences and phrases in that text window and sort of rough edit the video by 'text editing' alone.?
Then when youve cut it you could listen back and tweak the edits in the timeline if bits of speech were cut off too abruptly
I would like for the transcription window to have an assignable append. So you could select where the append will happen.
Also the sequence transcription should have the time codes at user designated intervals. and then you could export a text edit as a transcript.
We need timecode on that transcribed txt file Blackmagic!
I agree!
First I like then I watch 🎉👍🏾
Nice video as always. But will the transcription and cc support other languages like Hindi?
Thanks for the kind words. I have no clue if Hindi will be supported in the future. I have tested with a Spanish interview and strangely it did a Spanish to English translation for transcription. (for about a paragraph, then it just said speaking in foreign language). Captions and clip based transcription would not work at all with Spanish.
This is just a guess, but I would imagine all major languages will get support in future versions - but I have no clue how the backend of this works quite yet.
Hi. Thank you for your response. I. Just saw it
Also, unfortunately, it seems like blackmagic has left us in a soup. There is no hindi or other most spoken languages and not even version 19 launched in December 2023. Seems they BMD people attained all the attention and now don't want to put similar attempts as they now became famous alternative for PP. That's a shame. 😮
Do you know when it will be able to Transcribe other languages like Hungarian?
The transcribe feature seems to skip over umms and uhhs. I'd love to be able to read through and chop out all of the ephemeral vocalisations. Seems like that's what takes the most time in editing my content.
Can we do it in multicam mode?
Great video. Note to self : don't waste anymore time looking for this feature - its a Studio feature and not int eh free version!
Do you happen to know if this transcription function in DR is English only?
Yes only English at the current time, they have said they will add more in future
@@mariotriforce Thanks for your response!
Editing from timelines is a way to recreate that workflow, which for us is a lot faster and feels more organic :)
does it work in other languages?
Awesome video, now we just need Davinci to Add AUTO SILENCE DETECTION and removal to be perfect!
Where are the subtitles. Did you not show how to place them in the timeline?
I hope you are able to get back to me.
hi there - you want to create prores proxy media at 1080p resolution - this will playback nicely and while it will require more storage it is not super big
I have an older tutorial on here about better playback using proxies.
I'll buy a resolve course from you to be an ultimate editor and short cut master
Another feature request: apply voice isolation on clip level just as you can turn on equalisation
Why: That would help transcription to be more accurate with bad audio
(Coming from FCPX, they have it, but they lack the transcription)
There is voice isolation available on clip level. In the Inspector - Audio section.
@@EmotiveLensMedia No, only on the timeline. Not in the media pool.
Delete transcript and retranscribe? Is this possbile?
I haven’t found this as an option yet but hopefully it’s coming soon.
When I edit from the transcription text window, the window disappears. Even when I hit the transcribe audio button on the interface, or select transcribe audio on the right click menu again, the transcription window does not reappear. Does anyone have this issue, or know how to pull up the transcription window again?
Wait, i didnt even know you could auto create captions. Ive been doing that manually. Please send the link for that.
How to export text with timecode ?
I updated to davinci resolve 18.5 but i dont have the option for auto subtitles.. can someone please help me?
When I try to use the Key Customization to change the (Swap Timeline & Source Viewer Ctrl + PgUp x +) to the Tab Key it tells me Tab is already assigned to Playback>Play around/to>Play around current frame. Question do you Eliminate the Original Key Combination or just add TAB to the Original Key Combo?
