That instructor pilot is really good. I like his teaching style. Keeps everything nice and calm and reassures the student pilot when he's doing good things, helps him right along when maybe not doing everything perfect in a calm and reassuring way as to not startle him.

Wow! The frustration and disappointment in your face is real noticeable. I cannot imagine trying to master flying a helicopter with no power to rotor and relying on aerodynamics to keep it rorating. Your self expectations are so high that it can be seen that this sorti was a low score on your personal standard of acceptability chart, but what you have accomplished as a fighter and airline pilot you will overcome this rough day.
Thank you for what you do sir! 👍

Never seen autos from in the cockpit before. I always thought you use the collective to keep the rotor speed down during your flare but Lester says no and insists using cyclic only. That makes it very difficult to not overshoot your landing. I learned allot watching this. Thankyou

A couple of things. I am NOT a helicopter pilot but I took some lessons in a UH12 20 years ago. That helicopter was made in 1947. Throttle / collective was near non existent. All the frequencies were on the stick because you can’t take your hands off the stick for a second. I wish I got my rating though, we did autorotation and pinnacle landings and of course you know height vs velocity.

Nice autorotatins as far as they went..however anyone can fall 1000' it is the last 50' to touchdown that makes for a successful autorotation... I highly encourage you to find somewhere you can do touchdown auto's, it makes a very big difference. I have 30 years of helicopter flight time with a little over half of that as a company Check Airman, and military IP.

Not sure if this well help or not. I soloed an airplane after 4.5 hours of dual instruction. It was super easy.
Later I wanted to try helicopters. Figured how hard could be? Soloed and airplane in 4.5 hours and got my private right at 40.
Well, the R22 humbled me. I was getting frustrated and then like a light switch I could suddenly fly it.
Then it came to autos. That was a real challenge. I was always behind the helicopter. Then I figured something out. Stop flying the needles. They seem to lag behind to much. I figured out I need to anticipate things from other means like visual clues and sound of the rotor system. Once I figured that out it all got much easier.
On my check right I screwed up the entry but was able to recover and put the helicopter right dead nuts into the spot. Not close, but right dead nuts on it. Then I thought I sure hope he does not ask me to do that again.... Then it was onto the run on landings. Super easy. Right into the same spot between two road cones. Sadly, have not flown much since.
Get your guy to teach you zero airspeed autos and full contact autos.

Hey CW, old (very old marine chopper pilot here from Vietnam era. H-34's and 2 engine H 53's) Trying to relate this video to those 2 choppers. This thing is different. We were just taught to "look between our toes), cause that's where you were going to land. Nothing like you about "not" flaring with cyclic, and RPM's increasing. Maybe because we were so much heavier?? Can't remember max gross on the H 34 anymore, but the 53 max gross was 52000 lbs. (A lot more on the 3 engine jobs, I'm sure)
