I once taught voice lessons, however over the years when I stopped teaching and went back into medicine I stop focusing on my voice technique and now I can hear the difference when I perform. Thank you! It's happened a few times now where I've warmed up for 20 minutes, sang for an hour or two throughout the day and woke up the next morning with incredibly tender and sore glands along my neck. It only happens the day after singing regardless of warming up, hydrating, and correct singing technique. Thanks for the tips, hoping they'll help!
I see two options here. You are either using your voice for too long for your current strength and endurance, or you are engaging muscles that are not needed for the vocal tasks so they get overworked and tender the next day. Watch your vocal effort and try to isolate control of the vocal structures from each other.

It may take some time to heal after removal of vocal nodules. But also, I recommend voice therapy after they have been removed to change the behaviour that created them.

Can i ask you a question??why is my voice feel so straining when i start to sing my headvoice or mix. it's hard to maintain the pitch of my note nd it's seems like i completely can't not sing like my old days again my vocal chords or i think my adam apple seems like It's not going to is natural position thats why it's so hard for me to sing headvoice or mix vc.nd it's has been for 5 month.
You probably feel a choking feeling or you feel the ball in your throat rise up too high to where your notes sound strained, right? Well thats because your larynx (adams apple) is raised to high. You need to lower it. Im not entirely sure how to do this but i do know that relieving yourself of tongue, jaw and neck tension do improve your tone and prevent a strained sound.
@@illiciumverum6149 Thats, vocal tension I got the same thing check ur vocal chords to see if they healthy but they most likely are good,it’s just that ur neck muscles are tense and it doesn’t let u sing freely

Mem, Really your tips will be very helpful and useful for me, Because I was injured ,when I was sliding came down at that time suddenly wooden supporter of slide came with too much force on my neck on 24 December 2023. Luckily I am alive but I can not sing till date. I am a singer. I will follow your tips. Thank you so much .
I am so very sorry to hear about your accident. Recovery from serious accidents can be lengthy and having a good team of people who support you is very important. I wish you all the best!
Hey Katarina, I have been having a really sore throat after singing just a 50 minute set. It will continue to be sore for 3 days after the shows I play. I was wondering what the steps are to learn how to recover my voice and not damage it any further to the point of needing surgery.
Addison, I am sorry to hear about your vocal troubles. The first step is to have your voice properly evaluated, to have them checked, just in case. Once you know what you are dealing with, then you can take appropriate steps. In the meantime, while you are waiting for the assessment, lots of hydration (drinking fluids and steaming) and some SOVT exercises (gentle voicing).
I am sorry to hear that you are having voice issues. Screaming can do that to your voice. I suggest that you talk to a voice specialist (laryngologist to heave your voice properly evaluated).
Great tips and very useful for me at the moment. I've been practicing 1-3 times per day and intentionally picking songs that are outside of my range in order to keep pushing the boundaries that little bit further. Needless to say, I've reached a point where songs that I normally sing fine are even starting to sound terrible and I've come to realize that I'm just expecting too much from my poor little vocal chords. I love the idea of rest and being the most chatty person, it will be funny to tell my housemates that I'm going to be taking 3 days of silence to give them a proper break. It will be the first time in my life; though I will be singing Sound of Silence by Disturbed in my head...lol. Thanks for your help
Remember two guys that gargling deep is highly effective for humidifying the vocal cords. It works and helps also dissolve the mucus that’s immediately around them

I’m at my whit’s end. I had to call in sick today at work because I was physically ill from straining my voice. My throat gets swollen and then I often have coughing and nausea. I am in a new job at a nature center where we do lessons for field trip kids. I’ve had this problem in the past as well after anytime I had prolonged talking. I’m just not accustomed to it. I have two more days to rest my voice before three more days of field trips. I will try steaming, but I’m worried it’s not going to be enough long term.
You posted this 5 days ago. How is your voice feeling today? If your voice problem persist, I suggest that you speak to your doctor or have your voice evaluated by a laryngologist.
Hi Dini, yes the laryngeal massage is a great technique for releasing tension. However, I would not use it right before your speech because your neck may be red from touching it and manipulating the larynx, which may not look great on the stage. But a couple of hours before your speech is a great option!
Hi I’m 14, when I was younger I used to sing a lot but I screamed so much I feel like that was the part that permanently damaged my vocal cords I can’t sing like I used to I sing good sometimes but it depends on what my vocals r feelin that day. I’ve tried every technique I’ve also learned to sing from my diaphragm but I never noticed any changes I have gotten a lil better over time but I break down cause I can’t sing like everyone else I’ve practiced almost everyday nothin has changed at this point I’m feelin like goin to see a docter
Many people think that vocal rest is not speaking or singing at all. But absolute rest is rarely prescribed. Instead gentle vocal exercises are a much better option.
I think I accidentally strained my cords due to the weather, now that is winter. Can that be possible due to the dryness? I’ve been singing for awhile and normally I know my personal limits. So having this type of strain for almost a week now due to the weather, it has been very strange to me. Now I see this video I realized I’m doing all that has been suggested. 2 more days will be one week of limited talking. Is there a point when I should see a Docter or is this process normal? When would suggest easing back to vocal exercises / training / singing?
The limiting talking should at least last 3 weeks, my hopes for you to get better are on another level as I myself recorded for over 2 hour's, I'm about to go into my second week of lost voice and 1 week of limited talking more like no talking because I've said about 10 words the lax this hole week. Try keeping your throat moisturized and do not clear your throat, you're only going to add pressure
I knew laryngeal massage cuz my mom is an elementary school teacher and had a surgery on her vocal chords. She starts the massage from behind ears till the clavicula lock
Laryngeal massage is very effective after vocal surgery, for re-setting the vocal instrument after heavy use (like school teachers have to do every day) or for releasing tension.
Katarina -you are helping the budding singers thro' your most lucid , correct voice lessons explained in very simple narrative ; surely you are teaching the universe to sing in mellifluous voice ..!!
Tongue rolls or tongue trills? They are different but in any case they both release tension from the tongue. Tongue trills can also improve vocal fold vibration and airflow as you need just the right amount of breath pressure to make them.
You left this comment 3 days ago. I hope your voice feels better today. If you continue having voice problems for more than 2 weeks, I suggest that you have your voice checked by a laryngologist.

I was doing a scare trail yesterday and I was a clown hiding in the bushes and scaring people for a few hours. When we finished scaring people the other actors and I noticed our voices were gone from yelling all night
Yes, that is absolutely possible. You were probably using too much constriction in the throat to create those sounds. Rest your voice, drink plenty of fluids and do some gentle SOVT exercises.
My accent is a bit of a mystery as it has been shaped by many English teachers from all over the world and from living in many different places. But most people guess Dutch, which it is not!

Same
You probably feel a choking feeling or you feel the ball in your throat rise up too high to where your notes sound strained, right?
Well thats because your larynx (adams apple) is raised to high. You need to lower it.
Im not entirely sure how to do this but i do know that relieving yourself of tongue, jaw and neck tension do improve your tone and prevent a strained sound.
@@illiciumverum6149 Thats, vocal tension I got the same thing check ur vocal chords to see if they healthy but they most likely are good,it’s just that ur neck muscles are tense and it doesn’t let u sing freely
I hope you were able to find a solution to your problem.
Hi Katarina, i have very bad voice/ throat tension, i have had this since i was 21 years old and seems to have coincided with a postoperative vocal cord nodule/ polyp removal, i think this is a psychological issue, after my operation i was afraid to use my voice because of a fear of damaging the cords, then i noticed this throat tightness especially when in social situations its worst, i have lived with this for 42 years as i am 63 now, i will be watching your videos from now on an hope i can learn how to control this, best wishes from the UK.
Hi Ray, first of all I am sorry to hear that you are dealing with this issue and I'll be very happy to help. Please let me know if you have any question and I hope you enjoy my videos. Thank you.
Mem, Really your tips will be very helpful and useful for me,
Because I was injured ,when I was sliding came down at that time suddenly wooden supporter of slide came with too much force on my neck on 24 December 2023.
So many singers have this problem!! Thanks for sharing your tips.
Unfortunately, you are right. There are many singers who have this issue. But it is completely avoidable.
Thank you for sharing I need this as singer
Thanks for listening
i was SCREAMING, ever since then i cant sing high notes. its been 3 months and now i’m sad
it’s been about a year for me :(((
Same... :(
I am sorry to hear that you are having voice issues. Screaming can do that to your voice. I suggest that you talk to a voice specialist (laryngologist to heave your voice properly evaluated).
Same 😔
I glad I've found this interesting .I have sinus and don't know my voice sounds rough and, I can't even get a higher note
Have you had your voice checked by a laryngologist?
@@healthyvoicetips sorry for replying now was hectic busy this week. Nope I didn't see a laryngeal can't afford it .
Hi! Thankz Katarina this video is very informative and i'm learning a lot...its very helpful for me too.
Relate much huhu..
I hope your voice is fine today!
Sing it like Simon and Garfunkel. That is your problem, scream singing. Dont scream sing.
Remember two guys that gargling deep is highly effective for humidifying the vocal cords. It works and helps also dissolve the mucus that’s immediately around them
I like gargling for many different reasons. One is releasing tension from the back of the tongue.
You are blessed with a good and attractive voice.
Thank you for your kind words!
Thank you! Your tips make my day!!! I took a relative vocal rest!
Well done!
I think you just saved my voice. Thank you
😉
Thanks so much. Keen to try these out.
Let me know if you have any questions.
so a little over a month ago i got sick and lost my voice completely, as it was still healing and coming back, i went to a concert and screamed my head off. i’ve continued to talk and sing pretty much normally since then but don’t sound as good as usual and i feel so strained all the time singing, and even talking too much. i really hope this helps
Thanku so much for all your remedies
I will going to try few of them. I m a teacher and it’s difficult for me to avoid conversation
May be i will get relief after this remedies
Let me know if you have specific questions.
No! I’ve never heard of steaming! Thanks for sharing :)
You are missing a lot! Steaming is so calming and relaxing. You need to try it!
Great tips. I love the one on having someone talk for you when your voice is strained. That sounds like it could turn out to be really fun! 😀
I actually never thought about it this way but you are right, it can actually be a fun exercise!
You are an excellent teacher! Thanks a lot. Best wishes from Germany for the new year!
Thank you! 😃 Very kind of you!
you are an angel. thank you.
Wow, thank you!
No.. haven’t heard Of laryngeal massage either!
Laryngeal massage is a great tool too but it is not for everyone. Some people may be sensitive to touch on their necks.
Great tips here! I'll have to keep these in mind next time I feel like Ive strained my vocal chords!
Yes, this is good information to have. Just in case. Thank you for watching and your comment.
THANK YOU FOR YOUR HELP
With pleasure!
Hey miss my hoarseness is from last 5 months after surgery I don't have any recovery in my voice the vocal cord swelling is still now can u help me plzzzzz
You need to speak to your doctor and see what he or she recommends. Ask him or her if speech therapy is recommended. Maybe you need to work with a voice specialist to improve vocal function.
I’m missing out on so many of my gigs 😞. But hopefully I’ll be back to it using these tips. Thank you. ❤️ from 🏴
I hope you are feeling better.
Same here smh
im a singer and the instant i heard singing i subscribed
I can feel your passion for singing!
I would have loved it if you have talked about teachers as well, not only singers
The same concepts apply to teachers. I have many more videos in which I talk about a speaking voice.
3 years ago i can still hit high notes from some songs but now everytime i tries to i can't anymore. I'm wondering if it has connection with my allergy to dust. But for now I am still hoping that i will get my old voice back. 😊😊😊
yes.
What have you tried to get it back?
Amazing video I'm a singer but whenever I sing high notes I dont know what happens at end it breaks....
Voice breaks are normal, especially as you ascend in range. You will get better at navigating them as you practice more.
I think the first time I heard of laryngeal massage was from one of your earlier videos. Great info. as usual!
Yey! I am so happy that you said that. I am glad that you've learned something from my videos.
Great tips and advice Katarina. The massage technique sounds really effective too. Thank you for sharing.
I am glad you liked it Dal.
You just saved me with this teaching
Glad to hear!
Thank you so much for these clips
My pleasure.
Never heard of this massage! What a great technique just before public speaking when you can't get to a steamer. Thank you for this video!
Koda, go and see a doctor. That is the right decision!
I didn't know about steaming. Thanks as always for sharing!
No problem. I am glad that you liked the video.
Thanks for explaining the two types of vocal rest. I think I'll skip those after parties! ;) Cheers!
Many people think that vocal rest is not speaking or singing at all. But absolute rest is rarely prescribed. Instead gentle vocal exercises are a much better option.
the laryngeal massage INSTANTLY WORKED for me. im cured!
Great to hear!
Please tell us about vocal cord paresis exercise
I am not sure I am the best expert in this area.
@@carlosnoriega5604 Good to know! It’s sucks, but I appreciate the reassurance! Thanks.
Yes, dryness can affect vocal function. I hope your voice is doing well today.
Thank you for such nice tips which are useful.
Thank YOU for your kind words
Great tips . Very useful thx
Thank you Ron, that is very kind.
Thank you my voice hurts so much😁
Do you have a plan to overcome your issue?
Katarina -you are helping the budding singers thro' your most lucid , correct voice lessons explained in very simple narrative ; surely you are teaching the universe to sing in mellifluous voice ..!!
Hi The Music Man! Thank you for your wonderful message. I really appreciate your kind words!
Your vids are great! Thank you! Could you help with this question....could I use a facial steamer to moisture my throat?
Yes, absolutely
Thank you for your reply. Do you have any suggestions on what to add into the steamers water, to benfit my throat?
My vocal coach used to be huge in “tongue rolls”. Would you care to comment on how that affects your vocal cords or larynx?
Tongue rolls or tongue trills? They are different but in any case they both release tension from the tongue. Tongue trills can also improve vocal fold vibration and airflow as you need just the right amount of breath pressure to make them.
Thank you, I am a Teacher suffered Voice Hoarness.Taking medical advice and Will follow tips you explained
I hope you found a solution for your problem.
For the last week my throat hurts then 3 days after my voice is strained and now I recovered I really sound a bit deep and I crack more than before
You left this comment 3 days ago. I hope your voice feels better today. If you continue having voice problems for more than 2 weeks, I suggest that you have your voice checked by a laryngologist.
Great video Katrina!! Great tips!!
Thank you Angelina! I really appreciate your feedback.
You are amazing. Thank you 😊
I have just noticed a very slight soreness and got worried a bit. Been over practicing. I hope it's nothing serious.
I hope it was nothing serious either.
@@healthyvoicetips Thankfully it wasn't 😁 got better after just one week. Thank you.

I hope you figured out what happened.
i feel this to have u figured it out im worried myself
Thanks for sharing this i

I haven't heard of the laryngeal massage
I made a few videos on this topic so you can learn more about laryngeal massage and whether it's something that may be useful for you.
@@healthyvoicetips Thank you very much!! also in the vidoe you told us to mention the fact that we haven't heard of that if we haven't
Love her voice. Is this a dutch accent?? I love it!
My accent is a bit of a mystery as it has been shaped by many English teachers from all over the world and from living in many different places. But most people guess Dutch, which it is not!
Haha it’s unique and very beautiful! 😊 I also appreciate all the advice for healing a voice. I have a bad habit of shouting too much and also love singing. I’m trying to recover from hoarseness and swelling now 😅
I am going to try this .. if it works I’ll send you hugs and kisses !
How is your voice feeling today?
@@healthyvoicetips feeling better , I am following your excercise to develop the vocal chords as well as I am taking medical assistant from an ENT ,it seems my vocal chord is a little inflamed because of excessive usage ..
Absolutely in love with your videos mam 😍❤️
Thank you so much 😀
do u have any tips? Whenever I try to sing high notes my voice just disappears it’s been almost a month and I’m very worried😥 pls help!
Thanks
With pleasure
Great tips as always!! Always learning something new when coming to your channel. ❤️
Thank you for your lovely comment. I am glad that I can offer useful information!
Could someone please help me. So, whenever I try whispering my voice sounds clear. When I talk without whispering in a normal voice I sound weird and my voice always sounds so weird its most definitely the opposite of smooth. Even when I try talking in a normal voice its hard to sound clear I always talk in a high pitch voice instead so I would not sound weird with a voice which sounds like its vibrating and unclear. I wish for someones help if you could help please try so. I am a boy and is 14 years old. I also tried researching a lot and I cant find much I drink a lot of water and I do not shout so this could help but I can not see a difference. My voice has been like this for a year.
Your voice is changing because of your age. And it will be changing for a few more years. It is not unusual to have unclear tone. Speak to your parents or a good friend about it. But if you are really worried, go and see an ENT to make sure that it is just that and nothing else.
@@healthyvoicetips I have the same problem! I’m 14 as well
Is it because of puberty causing it?(im a boy)
I was writing a song the other day and I hit a high note really weirdly and bam
