don't feel bad about the hammer being so hard to physically wield, even men have difficulty using hammers their first time and our bodies make their own steroids. like most things it takes a lot of time/effort.

The clay example is how I describe metal moving, too. You're a talented young guy. Good on you for sharing your knowledge, AK.
Keep up the great content. KK.

That is an amazing first-time outcome! I've been forging on and off for years, and i don't think I could get such a good result. Tough that may also say a lot about me...

..it's a successful teaching moment as long as the Fire Dept., EMT's and Police didn't have to be there. Well done gents...!

Why do you hold the hammer toward the middle instead of at the end?

A lot of people do this. They do it because it offers better control of the hammer and also makes it "lighter" since the lever point is closer to their hand. But it generally means that they are using too heavy of a hammer or just don't understand proper hammer technique. A lot of people will use really heavy hammers and then hold way up on the handle because they think the heavy hammer means they will hit harder, when they should be using a lighter hammer and holding it towards the bottom and they'd be getting equal or greater force than they are with the bigger hammer.
