    • @DIVETALK
      @DIVETALK  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      It's a personal choice. My first DPV instructor told me that if I felt I needed a helmet, I needed to slow down.
      Helmets are more of a requirement for other equipment like lights for example, and not because you expect to smash your head into the cave.

    • @billendres3115

    From my perspective (I just got cavern certified, but all I know about actual cave diving I learned from you guys), the dive looked super smooth and you dived incredibly well, especially considering the tightness of the cave and that backmount rebreather!! Thanks so much for explaining your mistakes, so I can learn from them when I’ll finally pick up cave training 😁

    I totally get the "you went diving without me" vibe...
    I'm a hunter, and have a few hunting buddies... It always stings a bit when you hear they went without you...
    It doesn't even matter if I was able to go... Jealously is one hell of an emotion! Hahaha 😆
    The getting back by hunting in my old hunting spot without them was always the repercussion hahaha
    Honest question... I'm a disabled vet... I recently tried water therapy and was back to myself in the water... I can't do my adventures anymore because of my back... Do you think diving would be OK for me to get into, bc in water it's like I'm not injured?

  • @randomosity459
    @randomosity459 ปีที่แล้ว

    Hey guys! Awesome videos. I'm not a diver but have learned so much from you guys! I went from thinking that cave diving was a huge gamble with your life, to, its dangerous if you're underequipped for the situation, and if you venture beyond your ability/ training.
    However I did/do have a question about the line. With some of the hazards in cave diving being light failure, losing the line, and silt outs, wouldn't a side emitting fiber optic cable line, that self illuminates from the ambient light at the entrance to the cave, be an improvement over the standard line that is run through the caves? Or would this not work for reasons my non-diver self wouldn't think of?
    I have seen in some videos where in the event of a deep cave where sun-light doesn't penetrate, there is a line that runs vertical to the surface, so even in those instances feeding a fiber optic with sun-light shouldn't be a concern... theoretically?
    From outside the industry it seems like it would serve as even further safety to divers, a lit beacon to safety in the pitch blackness. Even if it might entice the open water divers to venture in when they should not...
    I am sorry if I got to rambling there at the end, I'm not quite sure how to word my thoughts on the subject.

    I’m a brand new certified cold water OW diver with just 6 logged dives. I’m
    Absolutely fascinated by this type of diving, however I’m extremely nervous to try something like this. Even the thought of penetrating a wreck is scary to me. I’m curious how you slowly overcome the mindset that I currently have regarding this type of diving. I understand it comes down to gear and proper planning for safety. I am more curious about how you alter your psychological mindset. Thanks for the great channel. I’ve binge watched most of your content over the last several weeks.

    • @gnarthdarkanen7464
      @gnarthdarkanen7464 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Okay, up front... "Dry" caver here... BUT I've explored and tried my hand at a LOT of supposedly "extreme" activities. It pretty much works the same way, psychologically speaking, as you approach a new activity to being able to shift from "This scares the sh*t out of me" to 'That's not as painful/hard/bad as I thought" and eventually to "What? No more? Let's go do that again, then!!! It's FUN!"
      It's training and education to know what the "actual" risks are from the terrors your mind makes up as "perceived" risks... The more you learn about what can go "wrong" and what to do about it, the better mentally equipped you get... AND with that, the more confident you get about doing the thing... Everything's a bit difficult in the beginning. That's why we practice Practice PRACTICE for all the details and applications involved. When we're out there actually DOING the things, it's been done so we already know we can do it.
      We also "start small"... SO for caves and wrecks, it should be easier little "throughs" and then up to the public accessed open wrecks before you start investigating actually sunken ships (from accidents or war) because those "legitimately sunk" vessels will have the cables, sharp shards of metal, and old rigging out to snag you or your equipment... where the opened "artificial reefs" type are cut specifically so you have multiple ways in and out and there's rarely anything left of the rigging or mechanical works to hurt you...
      I got stuck in a cave, where it was pretty impossible for more than one person to get to me at a time... AND we HAD rope, but it was several hours' away at a "stash"... SO I had to wait... AND the batteries in my lamp died on me, and my spares were in the backpack BEHIND me where I couldn't quite get to it... SO up to that point, I'd always thought I'd just freak out and die if I was trapped "for real" in a cave... BUT no... It was certainly anxiety inducing as Hell, BUT I managed to talk myself through laying there, stuck as I was, for the three or four hours until my group could get back and tie off to my feet for more than one person's strength to yank me free... That's all that was really needed... AND while it's not the most pleasant learning experience "in the field" it's also not the worst. I don't have nightmares and I haven't quit...
      Your mind WILL adapt, so long as you keep getting after the appropriate training and practices to BE competent as well as confident in yourself. It works that way with motorcycles starting in the parking lot and becoming "Brilliant at the Basics" of slow speed maneuvers and emergency swerves and stops... It works that way with rock climbing, learning the rigging and knots on short walls and even indoor (and padded) climbing facilities before attempt El Cap' or what have you... It works that way with reptile wrangling with a PYTHON named "Rocky" before attempting even a wild king snake let alone a rattler or cobra... It works that way for caving, with short trips and guided tours to the likes of Carlsbad or Bristol Caverns (among many others) before packing a backpack and heading out to Cold Sink or Mammoth... AND it's that way with Scuba and the point of a steady series of cert's with regular diving WITHIN those cert's between Open Water and then Solo... and then Technical (Deep) AND THEN "Hard Cover" and around obstacles and wrecks and such... Get comfortable with what you've trained for NOW, and the next cert' won't be difficult to keep up with. Get that down to second nature, and you'll be safer for the cert's after that...
      Hope this helps... ;o)

    • @DIVETALK
      @DIVETALK  ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Great question Tom. The answer is: We didn't go from 6 logged dives to this. It is a progression. You go from Open Water, to Open Water at Night, to caverns, to caves eventually with tons of practice in between...it is a marathon to become a cave divers, and like a marathon, for some of us looks impossible and even scary to try it, but if you started running and training for it and after a long time you realize you can run 20 miles, well then 26.2 miles don't look as scary as they used to look when you could only run 1 mile.

    • @Takman74
      @Takman74 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@DIVETALK thank you for this Analogy. It makes a ton of sense now to get a bunch of practice in on many levels before trying such things. At this point in my diving career I’m just a baby by the standards you mention. I am fascinated though and will continue to build on my diving skill levels as time goes on. Next year is dry suit and perhaps an advanced open water course. In the mean time I’ll keep watching your channel and sponging as much information as possible. Thanks for your response.
