  • This weeks Mille Lacs Fishing Report details current summer locations and techniques for smallmouth bass, walleye, and muskie.
Some of the current conditions on the lake involve higher water levels, bug hatches, and new walleye regulations. By mid August we will be able to keep two walleyes per day, within the slot.
It's been a good season for muskies, currently we have been targeting two major patterns. Deep weedlines and open water fish have produced nearly all of our action this season. Bucktails on the weedlines and large crankbaits on the mud flats are two proven techniques in the month of August. We have been encountering a lot of fish in the mid forty inch range, while also moving occasional giants that are well over fifty.
The walleye bite has been excellent! Many fish being boated ranging from 14"-24". Getting slot fish shouldn't be too challenging, we are regularly boating multiple 18"-20" fish each day.
Bobbers and leeches are one of the best techniques on Mille Lacs, but leadcore and small crankbaits really shine as well during the dog days of summer.
Good walleye bites can be found on top of the gravel bars, on the edges of the mudflats, as well as the rock piles both shallow and deep. There seems to be a lot of actively feeding fish in the lake at this time.
Mille Lacs continues to be ranked as one of the top bass destinations in the country!
The "dog days" of summer can be frustrating for many smallmouth anglers, but often times all that is needed to get back on 'em is a change of technique. Baitfish inundate the main lake every year mid summer, this switch in forage often times goes unnoticed by anglers. Instead of fishing bottom oriented techniques, try fishing minnow style baits. One of the most productive techniques for mid summer smallmouth bass, is the spybait.
Good luck fishing and have a great weekend!

I’m not familiar with your boat however, I fished on Mille Lacs for years out of a 16 foot Lund w/ a 30 hp Evinrude. Stick to the calm side of the lake and watch the weather. That’s my advice.

Yes it is, just watch the weather though.
