    I was ice fishing in upstate NY years ago, a game warden came up to us and asked us for our Liscences . We showed him them and he went on his way. We went back to the same spot the next day. The same game warden came up to us and asked us for our Liscence again . My buddy said don't you remember us from yesterday, he said no I don't. My buddy picked up a perch We had and bit it's head off and spit it on the ice . He said will you remember us now , he said yes I will. We never saw him again.

    This is an honest question, from someone who grew up fishing (open water only) in northern Wisconsin. I've been watching a lot of these ice fishing videos lately, and enjoying them. One thing I have noticed is that people in the videos don't generally seem to "set the hook" very aggressively, but rather just start reeling in. It seems to me that this leads to a lot of "darn, he got off". My dad would hold his rod tip low while reeling in so he could really get a hard set when he whipped the tip up. He said his dad (who was a professional muskie guide) had taught him that. My question is, is it because of the type of rods/lures that are used for ice fishing, that you can't really set aggressively? I do understand not wanting to yank live bait out of the fish's mouth. Again, I was taught with minnows or worms you let them take it, then reel down the slack, and then set hard! Thanks for the video, and any insight you can give me.

    • @RogueStatusX
      @RogueStatusX 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@shanewells9067 ill guarantee you its 99% the sharpness of the hook. When ice fishing most people dont use hook protectors on the treble hooked spoons and jigging rap type lures and def dont protect the snelled rigs because getting broke off while ice fishing comes down to either a weak knot, bigger than expected fish or nicked line not being checked and re-tied. in summer fishing youre casting or drifting and getting broke off way more often cause of movement. ice fishing youre just dropping a line down in front of you and causes you to become lackadaisical about your knots and line and if you keep catching 30-40 perch a weekend with zero issues you dont even think to sharpen hooks
