Saw Jimmy Webb a couple of nights ago in Melbourne and he nearly lost it a couple of times when talking about Glen. They clearly had a unique soul level connection - the great songwriter and the artist who interepreted his songs so perfectly. I'm grateful to TH-cam that we get to see these amazing performances for all time.

This tune is an example of his genius use of his right-hand. He is really adept and blurring the difference between flat picking and finger-picking. He just does whatever sounds good and supports the tune and his singing and he does it effortlessly and with perfect control. It gives his playing a more 'orchestral' sound and the end result is one guitar that sounds like more like two or more.

Impossibly effortless. His Right hand is so fluid. Not an easy song.

I think he is using hybrid picking here. He is strumming bass notes with a plectrum (guitar pick), and also picking higher notes with his fingers.

Some folks don't realize that "Highwayman" is a song about reincarnation, so Glen's "one-man" version makes much more sense (to me) than the 4-man version done by Willie, Johnny, Waylon, and Kris. It's the same guy coming back around and back around -- lifetime after lifetime. Go Jimmy Webb!

    • @publicmockeryofaliar4901
      @publicmockeryofaliar4901 8 ปีที่แล้ว +3

yes. reincarnation. to me it's more the story of lucifer, if you can understand that lucifer is perfect as part if gods creation, having traversed time since the beginning, and having walked every walk of earth life imaginable, only to repeat the process of being born to earth again and desiring to return to his original position. he'll always be around.
each person will interpret this song their own way but the average person listens to music with only their ears, instead of listening with their mind too.

If Capitol had released it as a single, “Highwayman” could have been another big hit for Glen. It’s a shame they wouldn’t.. what a wasted opportunity!! I loved Glen’s version to death!! Such beautiful guitar & orchestral arrangements in the studio cut. IMO, it is so much better than The Highwaymen’s version that was released later. Glen’s interpretation is definitely more superior!! Glen’s guitar playing here.. simply beyond words 😍

Of all the videos available on youtube I love these the best. Just Glen and his guitar and a great song for him to make special. I venture that no one to this point has ever done a greater solo version of this song.
Side note; Glen recorded it first for a TV special that starred Johnny Cash. Well, Johnny loved the song so much he then formed and named the Highwaymen to honor the song.

I swear that Jimmy tests the limits of Glen's range with the amazing songs he writes. As he goes down one key at a time, his voice goes deeper than I thought he could get to as he sings "and again", etc.. I've heard some of his highest notes, on occasion at the end of MacArthur Park he will take that last note up into his falsetto, but I think there was a time when he could hit those high notes.

In an interview Jimmy Webb talked about having vivid dreams which he later used in his songs. For this particular song, he described the dream of being chased by red coats as a highway man being so vivid he woke up in a sweat. He continued to dream (I’m not sure of the time span) out of that came the other characters/occupations - dam builder etc.

This is amazing! And so is Jimmy Webb’s, but I feel like the Highwaymen’s version gets the point across better for me. This song is about reincarnation, which means that the ‘highwayman’ would be a different person each time but have the same soul. Being sung by one person doesn’t quite capture that point for me, and that’s why Johnny, Waylon, Kris and Willie didn’t record the song themselves because they thought it would sound better with more than one person.
But this version is still amazing.

Wishin' Glen was still appearing at Branson. I would be there to hear his voice and guitar.

I love Glen's voice and certainly his kindness. Does anyone remember the name of this show? Oh, Crrook and Chase. 😊

I know Glen had first dibs on Jimmy Webb songs and he did Highwayman first, but his version never went anywhere. The song just fits the foursome of Willie, Kris, Waylon and Cash and launched their "supergroup" career. Glen had enough big hits of his own that he could afford to leave this one to them.
But I'd have loved to have seen Glen Campbell performing with the Highwaymen as a fill-in if any one of them had been under the weather. I don't think that ever happened.

The reason Glen's version didn't go anywhere is that the record company wouldn't back it.......so he gave the song to the Highwaymen.

Hybrid picking at its best. The problem, for want of a better word, is a lot of people love his singing, and few recognize that hes just as good on the guitar. Happens to those that play guitar as well as they sing

My favourite ever Glen Cambell song. It just outdoes every other version in my opinion. I also really enjoy these presenters. I normally find presenters from the old days really bland and boring from what I watch but these seem enjoyable to watch and quite funny and also seem to engage with Glen. Watching something like that John Lennon and Yoko interview makes me think is that really what tv interviews were like back in the day lmao
