  • Vice President M Venkaiah Naidu on 21 December said that India is rendering yeoman service in developing countries by providing access to life-saving medicines at affordable prices. Addressing the 70th edition of Indian Pharmaceutical Congress, the Vice President said, rural health programmes, lifesaving drugs and preventive vaccines should also receive attention from policymakers and pharma companies alike. He said speedy introduction of generic drugs into the market should remain in focus. The Vice President expressed happiness that the pharma sector is out-performing most other sectors in achieving consistently high growth. The pharmaceutical industry is deliberating on various issues related to generic drugs and medical devices at the event in Noida, from December 21-23. IPC 2018 will see 125 speakers and organisers expect around 6,000 delegates this year from all the sections of the pharma fraternity from India as well as abroad.
Guest - Prof. Roop K. Khar, Principal, BS Anangpuria Institute of Pharmacy,
    B. R. Sikri, Chairman, 70th Indian Pharmaceutical Congress,
    R. K. Srivastava, Former Director General, Health Services, GoI,

    Intro:
India serves 180 out of 195 countries, 20% of international generic market. Focus on student curriculum. Focus on vaccines (international market). Ayshman Bharat generates high demand for generics
    Challenges:
API (active pharma ingredients eg. penicillin g r/m) manufacturing India dependent on China, dead in antibiotic research (no new molecules), standardisation of ancient medicine systems (phyco-pharma), accessibility/affordability, lack of standardised quality pharma devices production
    Way forward:
Demystifying policy (joint collaboration), economy of scale in generic drugs, increasing investment in r&d

Pharma industry has showed consistent growth in trade and otherwise.
    Pharma vision:
    Scientific intervention. Quality product production.
    Three segments:
    1) Long term strategy(Vision 2030)
    2) Focus on Pharma industry
    3)Research and setting international standards.
Aim: Be a world leader in this industry. Make in India promotion.(Most raw material are imported from China)
For success of the vision :
Focus on HR and R&D. Sustainable in nature. PPP promotion. Affordable medicine. Innovation.
    Challenges:
Innovative medicines. Last antibiotic manufactured in India was 70 years ago. New molecules and share it with other countries. Promotion ayurvedic medicines. Accessibility and affordability is a huge issue. Generic version increasing. Priority on API.
    (Khatoge committee- Focus on API)
    Way forward:
    1)Frame Policy on particular segments.
    2)Priority settings for the industry.
3)Govt cooperation in a large level in innovation and research and funding.
    4) Medical device manufacturing. (Less import and mass production with quality).
    5) Govt, regulatory authorities and industry coordination.
    6) Success of Ayushman Bharat can prosper with strong generic medicines market.
We have potential and should realise it!
