Starfield - MAY UPDATE - Survival Mode Environmental Afflictions - Frosty Cold and Dead

  • In the May Update we get 20+ GamePlay Options to build our own Survival Mode. I've cranked up afflictions because, no one lives forever.
    In this video I head to the cold dark corners of the Settled Systems to find out if I can lose toes and fingers to hypothermia. Fortunately, I end up "only mostly dead, which is slightly alive".
    I also discover how to avoid malnourishment and dehydration without eating or drinking.

    Extreme is a game changer. I would call it a new game but having the prior knowledge helps in the long run (like where to find resources, best outposts, favorite weapons, etc.). Paying attention to health, drink, food is a new dimension. Currently an Xbox voyeur. Counting the days to the update.

    • @kineer
      @kineer  4 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      Soon! (re: update).
      I have so many games in my catalog where you just die soon after you start if you aren't paying attention. That IS part of the game itself. It is fun.
      That won't be for everyone, but Starfield might end up flexible enough to give multiple audiences what they like.

      Great point. Think about cranking up the difficulty and then having a vehicle that will get you to/from places and serve as an environmentally safe place.

    I guess that makes some of those environmental perks worth taking. As well as some of the suit abilities to add environmental resist. Problem is they never seem to last that long before depleted. Not long enough to run to a point of interest.

    • @kineer
      @kineer  4 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      In storms, fast depletion and then trouble. On bright clear days, few problems.
      I assume this is also tied directly to the planetary habitation rank factors in as well. Frost is level "2" and on a sunny, clear day I could run around for 5+ minutes before hypothermia struck. In a storm, not so much.
      Theoretically this could mean that exploring a planet just became much more involved.
      We can no longer run endlessly, taking breaks only to complain about the emptiness on Reddit or Facebook.
      Now we have to check the weather, suit up properly and then head for POIs that provide legitimate shelter. Civilian Outposts are perfect for this and could be hubs in the future for far more content.
      Those are all thought exercises and speculation about what happens in the foggy pseudo-brain of a corporation (MS/BGS). :)
      Thanks for the comment, fun to think about.

    My opinion great upgrade more real, but if you learn spacesuit engineer, I think that's what it is called you should be able to put in a heating cooling system. With the visual lines running from the pack to the suit . Now to me that really would make it even more emersive, that is what I like also it would make more sense for researching these perks. Great video and good gaming to you.

    Interesting. I actually like that you could easily die if you're not careful about different afflictions. Also, it gives me more reason to keep different spacesuit sets at the ready for every kind of environment. I'm waiting for this update to leave Beta, gonna add some light mods to the game and start a fresh playthrough. My current one has 400+ hours and a level 130 character. I did every single quest I could find, but I feel extreme difficulty is just what I need to make the game feel fresh!

    In my testing; a storm def increases "any" environmental damage rate and it seems to get colder at night which will cause issues on already cold planets.
    Edit: Those 1x1 store rooms have around 25+ drinks that add +60 DMG resist and around 10 meal items - CF Ghosts always have them - great for when you play extreme (+69% XP) & don't swap your weapons ;)
    Edit 2: I was just on a moon w/solar radiation but only during day 👍
    My first environmental death was I slept outside on Bessel III-b - DOH!

      I tested on Grissom and you do get both Solar Radiation and Ambient Heat on the day side. Solar Radiation goes away on the night side. Temps stayed the same at 429°C regardless of which side I was on. I still haven't wrapped my mind around that yet. ;)

      I did a lot of testing on this in the last few days (hasn't made it into a video yet). In this specific video I was sort of lol'ing my way into death just to confirm the outcome. This was right at the time of the update.
      The good news is what I've found recently fits well as 'survival tactics' and if it's predictable it's just another great feature for the game. The bad news is we're all a little paranoid that BGS introduced more bugs with patches and that makes enjoying it challenging. I might be able to help clear that up soon.

    Do your space suits actually prevent you from taking as much environmental damage though?

    • @kineer
      @kineer  4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Depends on what 'environmental damage' means. If it means 'gaining afflictions' I can't see a difference between gear that provides higher protection (thermal 80, radiation 65) and lower (thermal 15, radiation 0). I got burns and heatstroke or radiation poisoning in both around 6:30 minutes. Bot then started getting worse, occasionally getting better.
      If the question is about 'rate of health loss', I can't say. I was taking health damage in both situations. At about 9:00, I went back in the ship and tried to sleep away the damage and take meds.
      Short version is: so far, it's not making sense in a simple way.

    There's time dilation?

    • @kineer
      @kineer  4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      It's a stretch of the term, but often used in Starfield to describe it the difference between local time and Universal Time (UT).
      UT is modeled on Earth time is what game elements are generally tied to for the purpose of reset/replenishment.
      For example, a vendor might refresh inventory in 48 hours (UT).
      Planets and moons can have widely varying rotation speeds so the game calls whatever they have a day and divides it into 24 hours. So if you go to Venus and sleep for 24 hours, it's a local measure and FAR more UT passes.
      That's just my practical understanding. If I want things to reset, go sleep on Venus or Copernicus IV. There are many others.
      If you prefer to avoid any common Bethesda 'wait' tactics and just play the game letting time pass as you go, none of this would impact you.

    From what I can tell, there is no way to 100% protect against the environment, I got Thermal to 85% and that is the max that I could get, I should have 100% but the game won't let me get there, also any caves or buildings should protect you but they don't, there has to be a way to protect against it 100%^ as some missions would be unfinishable to finish as I can't 100% protect against it, for example, I am doing the teramorph mission on the cold planet and I have to turn this off because I get hypothermia within 2 minutes even though my thermal says 85%, I always hated Bethesda for not letting 100%, even in Skyrim I modded it to get up to 100& chance to pickpocket as we could only do 90% lol

      I might have read one or your comments somewhere else (or someone with the same issue). In short, you are not alone.
      In my testing, my suits were very inconsistent in providing any protection (up to affliction then in damage mitigation). I was swapping apparel (hazmat) plus different suits, standing around and dying "for science!" Something is not right and while I was excited for these features at first pass, my enthusiasm is significantly tempered at this point. The Londonian thing sounds like a mess. I had a bad experience underground at a simple Abandoned Hangar. I've read NASA is exposed as well. Not good.

    • @kineer
      @kineer  4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I was surprised at how different the game felt starting a new character. Just working through Kreet had a different edge. Kreet is very linear and basic intro content. I cranked a few hours on a throw-away new character before I knew it and was having fun in content that had zero mystery for me.
      There are so many elements of the game that I could effectively ignore before that are now useful. Some of that is still implemented in a basic way (and with new bugs uncovered), but now I think about each feature and try it out. I suspect in another month+, the gameplay options will all feel normal, but I also think Bethesda will continue to roll more out seemingly minor changes with bigger impact. e.g. At some point "ship fuel" could be a selectable gameplay option.
      Over time, this game will have all the features they considered launching with (but maybe couldn't for schedule reasons). Also the things they pulled because they "weren't fun?" for some test players.
      More importantly, it will have player-tested modes that mean casual space explorers can jump in and they might also garner a fair share of players that enjoy the complexity of other games with more rigorous mechanics.
      I am speculating or perhaps hoping. It's still fun for me, for now. ;)
      Short version is I'm enjoying the new game options so much on new characters that I'm about to add it to all my characters. After playing with it for a while, it feels like it's 'missing' on the higher level guys.
      Thanks for watching!
