The divorce ban has been the cause for multiple married individuals to end up living with another who is not their spouse. Percentage wise, this living in adultery probably exceeds any other nation. The no divorce policy has created a worse condition than it would of solved.

Good comment thank you...the Philippines and the vatigan are the only countries not to have divorce ..I feel that people should not be forced into adultery or shame marriages due to violence abuse cheating drugs or other traits. .people should be able to move on with there lives and families and relationships ..but only my opinion....take care

@@garrykneale We are living in Canada. I want to propose to my Filipino-Canadian girlfriend and retire to Philippines together. She was previously married in Philippines and later divorced in Canada. Your news probably clears up the situation. We will follow up with Philippine legal advice when the time is ripe.

Foreigners have always been able to remarry in the Philippines with a foreign divorce. But as you so correctly stated the Filipina needs the local courts to issue a foreign divorce decree to remarry. I know quite a few foreigners that have remarried in the Philippines.

Hi Wallace were these church weddings or online or quickie wedding as listed in new law.....my belief is you need to supply divorce documents before get remarried...I don't think a church will marry unless embassy clears your device dicree nisi....but I may be wrong....

@garrykneale These were registered marriages. At one time, foreigners only required a certificate of " legal capacity to marry" but the embassies are no longer issuing them. So I don't know what happens these days. Again you're correct, the Catholic church may not perform the service if you were already married in the church. But church services were never a condition for legal marriages. Many judges or lawyers were able to perform the service. Just had to be registered in the local barangay and subsequently the PSA.

@garrykneale I know of a South African who had difficulties getting appropriate documentation from his embassy (not a divorcee). So what he did was convert to Islam and the local mosque married them without any paperwork. All legal in the Philippines. He was able to get his embassy to recognize the marriage and he was able to get his wife a visa. Suffice to say his conversion to Islam was short lived . Just long enough to leave the country. 😁

Only general staff in the Vatican City are married and most likely got married elsewhere, not much need for divorce there. Yes I understand it's a statement (of general stupidity) that they don't allow divorce. I've done it once, with my malignantly narcissistic Malaysian Chinese first wife. I did so after the marriage councilor we were seeing asked to see me in private. She looked straight at me, unblinking, and said that there were worse things in the world than divorce. I took her advice and now married to a lovely Indonesian lady who had two young (14 years ago) children that were as wonderful as their mother. Divorce is good if you need it.

Yes your point about Vatican rrlevste....it has to stand by it's rules....I think divorce is a requirement in this age due to violence. Abuse. Druds .shameless marriages ..bullying and other issue with living with someone ..I would not waste my time in a marriage if it was a mess and unstable...even as the other party I would walk away ..disappear find happiness or relaxed life elsewhere...grest to know you have a wonderful family take care
