I love Silver Sonic as much as I love Mecha sonic, he’s had such a fun design. The visor shades, his smug grin, his goofy claw hand, and his jet shoes are all so good. The fact that he looks like he’s the least functional robo sonic makes me wanna root for him.
Funny enough this is technically the first robotic clone of Sonic considering The Master System version of Sonic 2 came out before the Sega Genesis version if I'm not mistaken

I like the idea of him being a prototype Metal Sonic, but I also like the idea of this being a "Mass Produced Silver Sonic." Like, a Sonic Robot on par with a Badnik. Silver (Robo) Sonic would probably be the next step up, as a miniboss tier enemy. Metal, Mecha, and maybe even Mechagodzilla Sonic would all quantify actual bosses, as they do.
That Proto Silver Sonic can have some uses. It seems really small so instead of it being just one, theyre several of them at a time. They can be dispensed by a bigger robot lets say Silver Sonic MK1 (Sonic 2 Genesis). This could explain the scappy looking design. They can be used to overwelm in sheer numbers and harder to hit because of their size. (Ex: Alot of them bouncing around the room like a crazed ball pit). Also, they could use those Machine Claw arms to grapple and annoy opponents as well as stretching to absurd degrees. Lastly, that cyclop eye it has can shoot a laser or just a flash bang type deal to keep the "annoying" motif.
Let’s talk about one of the most underrated Sonic characters in the entire freakin’ multiverse of Sonic. Silver Sonic is adorable and we all have to admit it. We all have the cool, sleek, supersonic robots like Metal Sonic, Mecha Sonic (the Sonic robotic used one that I love so much) and all the other amazing Sonic robots to intimidate us and make me laugh because I’m having fun and cry because I don’t want the robot I’m fighting to get hurt but at the same time I don’t want Sonic to get hurt but there’s always gotta be one little guy that makes you smile. That makes you wanna say ‘awww’. That’s like a little brother to the big guys who make you scream and laugh and cry. I love Silver Sonic, he’s cute, awesome and nobody can tell me otherwise.
My headcanon: Eggman forced Tails to make this Mecha, giving him Life or Death situation. little did Eggman know Tails was too much of a Sonic fan to design it better then this. Tails excused himself as "Beginner" of technology, but Eggman learned quickly he lied.
This is an adorable design. I was getting confused to why you hate this so much, like, its not bad. It felt like the audio was meant for a different design and silver sonic was the closest punching bag.

Until then, I'd only got to sometimes play Sonic 1 with my one friend who had a Genesis. I grew up on the Game Gear games and love all the references in Mania!
Just going to provide some additional information for context. The Game Gear was essentially a portable Master System. However, there was some stark differences as one is a home console and the other is a portable. If you play Sonic 2 on the Master System, which released a few days before it's Game Gear counterpart, the game is a lot easier because you have more visible screen area to see the levels. The Game Gear screen required a lot of the view to be cropped out so you could still see the character reasonably, but this had the effect of making the portable game much harder to play. The portable game did not receive the same treatment that Sonic 1 being ported form Master System to Game Gear did, where programmers added additional elements to help the player with upcoming hazards.
The little brother idea is fine with me. There's good storyline potential here..... Metal sonic and Silver sonic GG as brother robots trying to eradicate sonic for good.

It looks like a Badnik, which then has a clear evolution into the first Mecha Sonic, which then diverges into Metal and Mecha MkII. They'd make a great baseline footsoldier in a Metal uprising story. Interestingly, the whole "Prototype" angle only happened _because_ of the Silver Sonic conundrum in the west. Because Mecha MkI was redubbed "Silver Sonic" on this side of the Pacific, and Archie then kept the trend up and designated SA1 Mecha Sonic as Silver Sonic MkII, and followed it up with a third one some fifteen years later, when it came time to actually introduce the genuine article, the numbers were off. And Ian couldn't use the Genesis Wave as an excuse because he'd already reintroduced Silver Sonic MkIII to the reboot universe in a previous story.

Facts: "Silver Sonic" is not the official name for both his 8-Bit Sonic 2 and 16-Bit Sonic 2 designs. Mecha Sonic Mark 1 appeared in Sonic 2, Part 1 (aka 8-Bit Sonic 2), Mecha Sonic Mark 2 appeared in Sonic 2, Part 2 (aka 16-Bit Sonic 2) and Mecha Sonic Mark 3 appeared in the Sonic 3 series.
I always felt that the Game Gear one was Silver Sonic (he was shiny and silver), the Sonic 2 one was Metal Sonic (he was just bolted together metal), and the Sonic & Knuckles one was Mecha Sonic. Didn't help correct my headcanon that the comics ended up having the S&K one in occasionally as Mecha Sonic, and everyone else who got roboticized or cloned in some way had a mecha form as well.
You know I could totally see Eggman using the Game Gear Silver Sonic as some sort of messenger bot akin to what Bokun did in Sonic X, since Eggman tends to boast about his plans and taunt Sonic to just try and stop him.

I have a weird idea for how Silver Sonic could come back in IDW, so bear with me. I want him to come back not as a Eggman creation whole cloth, but a prototype blue print that is REALIZED by TAILS. Tails has a habit of taking flawed/ failed robots of good ol' Eggy and improving them. So what if, during one of S&T's many adventures, Tails manages to hit a motherlode of sorts and finds a cache of failed prototype blueprints? Eggman has freely admitting to scrapping projects and just leaving them around, thus why black markets for Egg Tech exist, as well as defunct bases. Tails gets access to the database, and while not finding much worthwhile aside from good reading fodder (you can get good ideas by holding up a negative example,) he DOES come across the schematic for Silver Sonic. It would call for lightweight, inexpensive material, and functionality that we see in the Game Gear and Mania games. While this wouldn't seem useful on the surface, Tails would think to all the times Cities and Zones have been ravaged by the aftermath of Baddies, and forms a plan. Using repurposed Eggtech parts, updated firmware from Gemerl and Belle, and a whole host of other upgrades, Tails cranks out a handful of these guys to be a security force and cleanup crew. The Super Special Silver Sonic Security Squad. They would aid evacuation efforts, holding baddies at bay while innocents are escorted to safety, perform search and rescue efforts, etc.
I was kinda doing a similar idea, where Tails stumbles upon and fixes up a rusty, wandering version of Silver into something looking like Z-Toon’s doodles. Same page type beat rocks, haha!
I like to imagine that GG/MS Sliver Sonic is actually the prototype for the CD Metal Sonic. The reason it looks like that is because Robotnik was still working on the skeleton when Sonic was approaching the fortress. Not having enough time to finish the rest of its programming, Robotnik had to send the bot as is. But during the events of CD, Robotnik managed to make an 80% accurate Sonic-styled robot: Metal Sonic
I asked for Silver and Mecha Sonic...and you sorta fulfilled my request. Thanks (I guess). Honestly b4 the Super Genesis Wave, Archie made some good designs for both Sonic bots. One became a Secret Freedom Fighter and the other was an interesting debut of Death Egg I & II.
I think the point of this robot was actually more of a test on Robotnik's part. Robotnik managed to take a comlete trash-heap of a robot, barely a construct at all, give it a Chaos Emerald and suddenly it's at least dangerous _enough_ to warrant a simple boss fight. The way I see it, is that Prototype Silver Sonic (or Whatever we want to call it) stands in as proof that you can slap a Chaos Emerald into _anything_ and get _some_ results, a testament to their power and versatility when it comes to interacting with machinery.
I still play sonic 2 GG and love this little guy to death. I'll never stop loving him. Once you know your way around the levels sonic 2 GG isn't so bad at all.... In fact there's a lot of fun to be had speedrunning it.
Sonic 2 Game Gear was actually the first game I ever owned, clear back at age 4 - and during the time I owned the cartridge I only ever even saw Sky High Zone once, because I couldn't figure out how to kill the ant lion badnik in Underground Zone. Much later I tried it out on an emulator and abused save states to get to this fight; while the fight itself isn't mechanically complex or difficult it's just such an enormous pain to get there! It's painfully obvious that the game was designed for the larger screen area allowed by the Master System since there's offscreen deathtrap garbage littered everywhere, with Green Hills Zone being the worst of the lot thanks to those blind spring jumps. That game has a lot to love, though, with a stellar soundtrack, some really gorgeous pixel art, and loads of really cool ideas that while not executed the best still had a lot of merit to them. Silver Sonic in particular is interesting in retrospect, due to a lot of what you talked about here. I didn't know the bit about him being a prototype, which I think actually opens up some room for plot explanations of Sleeping Egg Zone at large. Think about it: Robotnik has at that point just kidnapped Tails, right after between two and five conclusive defeats at Sonic's hands (depending on how you count game chronology) and very soon after Sonic and Tails first met after Tails' Adventure. It's reasonable to think that Silver Sonic was already in the works at that point but wasn't up to snuff as a finished design, so Robotnik deals with the imminent threat of Sonic showing up by shoving a Chaos Emerald into Silver Sonic to boost him up as far as his design limitations allowed and just sending him out as a last line of defense. While Silver Sonic can be defeated just as easily whether or not the other five Emeralds were collected, failing to gather even one of those five means the sixth doesn't appear in Silver Sonic's casing, which keeps Sonic from reaching Crystal Egg Zone, which gives Robotnik time to LITERALLY KILL TAILS before he could catch up (watch the bad end cutscene from S2GG if you don't believe me!). From all of that guesswork I think we can infer that Silver Sonic's base design is already quite close to its operational limits, since adding a Chaos Emerald doesn't change him significantly. This explains why we've never seen this design since except as a mass-produced badnik that basically functions as a simple projectile in Mania - he just wasn't good enough to rival Sonic and the only time we've seen him he wasn't even finished. I don't think his design descends into Metal Sonic very cleanly, though, nor into Death Egg Silver Sonic, or any other subsequent design really. Could be that Robotnik sees the dubious results in Sleeping Egg Zone and just decides "nah, let's just try this from scratch," then comes back with the other two contemporaries in their respective games. Cool stuff, and an excellent breakdown as always!
I first saw this one in the comics, but frankly had forgotten it, even after it was in Mania. And in Mania, it was familiar, but I didn't remember it was from Game Gear Sonic 2 til now. Thanks for the history lesson, Nick (and the roast, it was hilarious).
I really like his design. I used to think he had normal arms and just had one of them outstretched in the official artwork, but apparently he has a claw coming out of his chest? Which is... honestly kinda freaky for such a goofy design.
To be honest, I actually kinda like MS/ GG Silver Sonic’s character design in a strange minimalistic sorta way, and I like the boss fight quite a bit more than the Genesis version because of its franticness. If MS/ GG Silver Sonic was to return in the future, I’d prefer him to just be a Badnik in an Eggman base stage rather than a boss, as that roll should be reserved for MD/ GEN Silver Sonic.
To be fair on our maligned metallic doppelganger, I feel he was designed for the Master System's pixels. It just so happens that this version was ported to the Game Gear with all the negatives that a reduced screen resolution can bring.
I unironically love Game Gear Silver Sonic and imagine if he had a more solid personality, he'd have Metal's "Sonic but something is wrong" trait, but instead of being an almighty brat thats determined to live up to his mission, he takes nothing seriously and it often screws him over.
Awwww I was hoping for at least Android Shadow, you hinted at it in a previous mecha march episode. Say what you want about this doofy bot, it did technically do a spindash before Sonic did. That's right, Sonic himself was so impressed by this hunk o' junk that he decided to copy its moves! That's kind of impressive. Giving the no-nonsense Metal Sonic a sidekick to bounce off of is a great idea. It sort of reminds me of how the IDW comics portrayed Metal's relationship with Eggman in a warmer, more familial light. Metal may be Sonic's one true antagonistic rival, but that doesn't mean that he can't have a softer side.
At least the Mastersystem didn't have too many leap of faith jumps like the Game Gear...I can already feel the frustration from Game Gear fans playing Sonic.

Honestly it actually IS one of the first Sonic bots (not counting Roller from Sonic 1), with Sonic 2 8-bit coming out before Sonic 2 16-bit.
What was cool about the Mania fight was that 8-bit Silver Sonic used Game Gear sound effects.

Facts: "Silver Sonic" is not the official name for both his 8-Bit Sonic 2 and 16-Bit Sonic 2 designs. Mecha Sonic Mark 1 appeared in Sonic 2, Part 1 (aka 8-Bit Sonic 2), Mecha Sonic Mark 2 appeared in Sonic 2, Part 2 (aka 16-Bit Sonic 2) and Mecha Sonic Mark 3 appeared in the Sonic 3 series.
I always felt that the Game Gear one was Silver Sonic (he was shiny and silver), the Sonic 2 one was Metal Sonic (he was just bolted together metal), and the Sonic & Knuckles one was Mecha Sonic. Didn't help correct my headcanon that the comics ended up having the S&K one in occasionally as Mecha Sonic, and everyone else who got roboticized or cloned in some way had a mecha form as well.

You know I could totally see Eggman using the Game Gear Silver Sonic as some sort of messenger bot akin to what Bokun did in Sonic X, since Eggman tends to boast about his plans and taunt Sonic to just try and stop him.

I have a weird idea for how Silver Sonic could come back in IDW, so bear with me. I want him to come back not as a Eggman creation whole cloth, but a prototype blue print that is REALIZED by TAILS. Tails has a habit of taking flawed/ failed robots of good ol' Eggy and improving them. So what if, during one of S&T's many adventures, Tails manages to hit a motherlode of sorts and finds a cache of failed prototype blueprints? Eggman has freely admitting to scrapping projects and just leaving them around, thus why black markets for Egg Tech exist, as well as defunct bases. Tails gets access to the database, and while not finding much worthwhile aside from good reading fodder (you can get good ideas by holding up a negative example,) he DOES come across the schematic for Silver Sonic. It would call for lightweight, inexpensive material, and functionality that we see in the Game Gear and Mania games. While this wouldn't seem useful on the surface, Tails would think to all the times Cities and Zones have been ravaged by the aftermath of Baddies, and forms a plan. Using repurposed Eggtech parts, updated firmware from Gemerl and Belle, and a whole host of other upgrades, Tails cranks out a handful of these guys to be a security force and cleanup crew. The Super Special Silver Sonic Security Squad. They would aid evacuation efforts, holding baddies at bay while innocents are escorted to safety, perform search and rescue efforts, etc.
I was kinda doing a similar idea, where Tails stumbles upon and fixes up a rusty, wandering version of Silver into something looking like Z-Toon’s doodles. Same page type beat rocks, haha!

I like to imagine that GG/MS Sliver Sonic is actually the prototype for the CD Metal Sonic. The reason it looks like that is because Robotnik was still working on the skeleton when Sonic was approaching the fortress. Not having enough time to finish the rest of its programming, Robotnik had to send the bot as is. But during the events of CD, Robotnik managed to make an 80% accurate Sonic-styled robot: Metal Sonic

I asked for Silver and Mecha Sonic...and you sorta fulfilled my request. Thanks (I guess). Honestly b4 the Super Genesis Wave, Archie made some good designs for both Sonic bots. One became a Secret Freedom Fighter and the other was an interesting debut of Death Egg I & II.
I think the point of this robot was actually more of a test on Robotnik's part. Robotnik managed to take a comlete trash-heap of a robot, barely a construct at all, give it a Chaos Emerald and suddenly it's at least dangerous _enough_ to warrant a simple boss fight. The way I see it, is that Prototype Silver Sonic (or Whatever we want to call it) stands in as proof that you can slap a Chaos Emerald into _anything_ and get _some_ results, a testament to their power and versatility when it comes to interacting with machinery.
The battle music slaps though, I could imagine with some polish, he could be a really fun antagonist, just give him some new moves and attacks.

Once you know your way around the levels sonic 2 GG isn't so bad at all....

Sonic 2 Game Gear was actually the first game I ever owned, clear back at age 4 - and during the time I owned the cartridge I only ever even saw Sky High Zone once, because I couldn't figure out how to kill the ant lion badnik in Underground Zone. Much later I tried it out on an emulator and abused save states to get to this fight; while the fight itself isn't mechanically complex or difficult it's just such an enormous pain to get there! It's painfully obvious that the game was designed for the larger screen area allowed by the Master System since there's offscreen deathtrap garbage littered everywhere, with Green Hills Zone being the worst of the lot thanks to those blind spring jumps.
That game has a lot to love, though, with a stellar soundtrack, some really gorgeous pixel art, and loads of really cool ideas that while not executed the best still had a lot of merit to them. Silver Sonic in particular is interesting in retrospect, due to a lot of what you talked about here. I didn't know the bit about him being a prototype, which I think actually opens up some room for plot explanations of Sleeping Egg Zone at large.
Think about it: Robotnik has at that point just kidnapped Tails, right after between two and five conclusive defeats at Sonic's hands (depending on how you count game chronology) and very soon after Sonic and Tails first met after Tails' Adventure. It's reasonable to think that Silver Sonic was already in the works at that point but wasn't up to snuff as a finished design, so Robotnik deals with the imminent threat of Sonic showing up by shoving a Chaos Emerald into Silver Sonic to boost him up as far as his design limitations allowed and just sending him out as a last line of defense. While Silver Sonic can be defeated just as easily whether or not the other five Emeralds were collected, failing to gather even one of those five means the sixth doesn't appear in Silver Sonic's casing, which keeps Sonic from reaching Crystal Egg Zone, which gives Robotnik time to LITERALLY KILL TAILS before he could catch up (watch the bad end cutscene from S2GG if you don't believe me!).
From all of that guesswork I think we can infer that Silver Sonic's base design is already quite close to its operational limits, since adding a Chaos Emerald doesn't change him significantly. This explains why we've never seen this design since except as a mass-produced badnik that basically functions as a simple projectile in Mania - he just wasn't good enough to rival Sonic and the only time we've seen him he wasn't even finished. I don't think his design descends into Metal Sonic very cleanly, though, nor into Death Egg Silver Sonic, or any other subsequent design really. Could be that Robotnik sees the dubious results in Sleeping Egg Zone and just decides "nah, let's just try this from scratch," then comes back with the other two contemporaries in their respective games.

I really like his design. I used to think he had normal arms and just had one of them outstretched in the official artwork, but apparently he has a claw coming out of his chest? Which is... honestly kinda freaky for such a goofy design.
To be honest, I actually kinda like MS/ GG Silver Sonic’s character design in a strange minimalistic sorta way, and I like the boss fight quite a bit more than the Genesis version because of its franticness.
If MS/ GG Silver Sonic was to return in the future, I’d prefer him to just be a Badnik in an Eggman base stage rather than a boss, as that roll should be reserved for MD/ GEN Silver Sonic.
The only way Silver Sonic 0.1 could be a boss if you team him up with any other robotic Sonic just like in Mania .
To be fair on our maligned metallic doppelganger, I feel he was designed for the Master System's pixels. It just so happens that this version was ported to the Game Gear with all the negatives that a reduced screen resolution can bring.

I unironically love Game Gear Silver Sonic and imagine if he had a more solid personality, he'd have Metal's "Sonic but something is wrong" trait, but instead of being an almighty brat thats determined to live up to his mission, he takes nothing seriously and it often screws him over.

Awwww I was hoping for at least Android Shadow, you hinted at it in a previous mecha march episode. It's fine though, same with Tails Doll and Metal Sonic, gives us hype to look forward to future episodes, has us keep invested and subscribed to you (though I would stay regardless because I enjoy your humor and rambling).

Do you know which Silver Sonic I like? I like that huge one in the Archie comics with sharper and more quills than Sonic and two red Metal Sonic Eyes. Like that robot looks scary and badass.

Say what you want about this doofy bot, it did technically do a spindash before Sonic did. That's right, Sonic himself was so impressed by this hunk o' junk that he decided to copy its moves! That's kind of impressive.
Giving the no-nonsense Metal Sonic a sidekick to bounce off of is a great idea. It sort of reminds me of how the IDW comics portrayed Metal's relationship with Eggman in a warmer, more familial light. Metal may be Sonic's one true antagonistic rival, but that doesn't mean that he can't have a softer side.
At least the Mastersystem didn't have too many leap of faith jumps like the Game Gear...I can already feel the frustration from Game Gear fans playing Sonic.
