As I've observed from fictional series with the Yin-Yang/good-evil dynamic, such as Avatar and Legacy of Kain, light is represented by a yellow/golden color while darkness is a dark purple/violet. The same could be said for Super Sonic's golden energy and the purple energies of evil entities such as Dark Gaia and Metal Sonic. In ancient Chinese philosophy, tho, the color yellow is considered "the center of everything", the source of both Yin and Yang, and represents neutrality or balance.
Yin yang, chaos, and emotions. All not inherently good or evil. They simply exist. I don't think Sonic represents order or good. Sonic just does what comes naturally to him which can be interpreted as chaotic in a sense. Sonic's empathy for chaos and the love of his friends is what revived the emeralds and gave him the power to calm him down. That's why Sonic is peak fiction.
Regarding Fleetway Super Sonic, the early games themselves actually shaped his wild, "Destroy Everything" persona. The writers and artists all noticed the same reaction from players when he was on screen - You have great power but it's much more difficult to precisely control, so as a result most players threw the traditional approach to playing out the window. It was less about being careful and considered, and more about plowing into the nearest enemy you could find with your face, not really caring about the dangers that lay ahead. To most kids the first time they got Super Sonic, it felt like the ultimate power trip, which is what Fleetway Super Sonic encapsulates.
I mean hiring someone whose actually a Sonic fan and is knowledgeable about the franchise is just common sense, too bad this is Sega we're dealing with lol!
When I think of Chaos Emeralds the sort of chaos that comes to mind is not the chaos as in the opposite of order, but the primordial chaos found in various mythologies. Usually this chaos is seen as a sort of dark ocean which the Gods use to create the world, so the Chaos Emeralds are the pure power of creation that could be good or evil depending on the imagination of the user.
Embrace the chaos, beautiful commentary man. Great outlook man, hope they continue to always stress the importance of Super Sonic in the future games. Same with that rare Hyper sonic haha
Perfect Chaos - that makes so much sense, with chaos and shadow and the biolizard - and even metal sonic - as aspects that all come together in Super Sonic.
Just like in the Archie Sonic verse. Eggman realized he hadn't been able to beat Sonic because basically Sonic is Chaos Theory incarnate. As a being that has been exposed to so much Chaos Energy, he has almost become chaos itself. It is impossible to plan around that which drove Eggman literally insane as he had a mental breakdown. Plus Super Sonic is pretty OP. Like practically God levels of power.
Yeah even Mammoth Mogul, one of the oldest/greatest Chaos Wizards admitted defeat with that reasoning as well. He ascended to Godhood twice as Master Mogul, the same transformation that led to millions of universes destroyed with his bare hands, even stronger than Super Sonic and Super Knuckles together, still lost in the end. His best solution was to just wait until Sonic dies of old age. I feel like they were getting somewhere with that concept in the games but ended at Sa2.
With the power of the Chaos Emeralds, Chaos, the Guardian of the Chaos Emeralds and a colony of Chaos, becomes Perfect Chaos, and using that Chaos it causes Chaos across the city. So in turn, Sonic used his own form of Chaos with the Chaos Emeralds to become Super Sonic, a Perfect Chaos, and uses this Chaos to stop Chaos for causing more Chaos. Seems pretty organised if you ask me.
I for one, LOVE Fleetway Super Sonic, but your opinion on him was refreshing. Super Sonic is my favorite thing in this franchise, and this video hit it right on the mark. Today is Sonic's 30th, and I'm having identity crisis too with my channel. I want to do more Sonic videos, make my own original comic series, and do things that are out of reach for me right now, but if today has taught me anything, that we just gotta let go sometimes. This afternoon, I'm gonna go with Sonic's mentality and just go feel free doing what I really want to do. Enjoy the weather, take some photos, and not stress myself out. I feel free today, all my problems are gone for now. That's the gift of the 30th. Happy Birthday Sonic.
I'm happy the world can celebrate the 30th anniversary of one of the greatest video game characters of all time... I am of course talking about motobug
Something about modern Sonics design that I really like is his red eyes. I’ve always seen that as an expression of greater power, the same coloration given to Hyper Sonics eyes in the classics iirc. I’ve always interpreted that as the Super Form growing with the Emeralds during S3&K, and when they return to their Chaos states from that of their Super ones…they haven’t lost an OUNCE of power. But yeah, a Hyper Go-On infused Sonic would make a great Hyper Form. I mean…They’re called HYPER GO-ON’S. JUST MAKE A HYPER FORM WITH THE WISPS-
I was a late riser with sonic. First game was Sonic Adventure DX on the GameCube. I will never NOT lose my shit whenever I hear that Crush 40 Open Your Heart turn on. SUPERB video as usual Nick
"You take one look at Super Sonic and you know he's got this! Because he still exudes that WILD power, that intensity, that burning aura like a flame that not even this water deity can quell. There's this sheen of violent intensity, but he never lashes out, he never let's it out of control, he's a Sonic that means business! This is Chaos Controlled, This is Perfect Chaos, This is Super Sonic!" I literally heard those words echo in the back of my mind the first time I saw Sonic 2 when it originally came out!
Small note : Hyper sonic actually has 2 differeny color sets, the rainbow one we already know, but it can also be a silver/white one. Since all colors of the rainbow when mixed together results in the color white

Ever since I was a tiny kid, I always loved both super sonic and super sayan Goku, and I personally had always though super sonic was essentially sonic going super sayan, even though I didn`t know that DBZ was actually the inpspiration for thr transformation. seeing the transformation animation as a kid also really reminded me of the first time Goku went super, though now I would say it`s more reminiscent of whe goku or vegeta would really power up and release massive bursts of energy... Man super sayans are just awesome, and super sonic is just as awesome...

This video is freaking immaculate. 10 seconds in and you not only read my mind, but made the exact joke I had hoped for lol. Nick, you're killing it with this one! Literally had chills with your Super Sonic reveal even though you telegraphed it hard. Music choices throughout were phenomenal choices. Love that you made the WORD "chaos" the main point and analyzing it completely was a great choice. The only minor point I think you missed was the obvious pun about "Sonic" going "Super Sonic" as that is a term in science to be faster than sound. Thanks a thousand times for this video. Really loved this one!
As you described Super Sonic as the true embodiment of Perfect Chaos, I was reminded Eggman made a similar revelation while in jail under the Iron King and Queen’s regime in the Archie Comic series
In the Fleetway Comics the chaos emeralds were created by attempting to draw and compress evil into them. I guess okd Kintobor was trying to purify the world but messed up
I find it odd that Sonic fans deny that Super Sonic is modeled after Super Saiyan. Like, it wouldn't be the first time that Sega got inspiration from Dragon Ball. Alex Kidd was initially pitched as a Dragon Ball game. Hence the Journey to the West references, jankenpon boss fights, etc.
IIRC one of the reasons Sega don't want to bring back Hyper Sonic is because they didn't want the franchise to become like DBZ with the addition of more powerful forms (ofc I'm not sure if that reason is legit or not). Yet Sonic X plus various other Sonic media are straight out shonen and Silver is quite an obvious allegory to Future Trunks. Tbh I get why some Sonic fans and Sega don't like the comparisons to DBZ however denying the unsubtle references/connections to it, is pretty foolish imo. If anything the Sonic franchise should embrace as well as own the fact it has a lot in common with DBZ.
Honestly watching your videos on Sonic related stuff really puts me in a different point of view of characters, and other things in the franchise. That really helps. Thanks. Also, I see how Super Saiyan and Super Sonic had a similar yet different concept. Super Saiyan was achieved by rage, your OWN power. While Super Sonic relied on total chaos, but in a calm sense. Controlling mayhem and craziness to your advantage. Both are powerful, and represent a fiery color and expression. Showing a combustion of energy, both can cause destruction. Super Saiyan and Super Sonic can be controlled, but in different ways. Super Sonic it was your choice to use it. While Super Saiyan had to be mastered and can be used for destructive purposes accidently from the rage. It unleashes it's own chaos in a way. However it's something that needs to be mastered by the user. Yes, I am totally explaining this wrong.
After watching this video the lyrics in Open Your Heart from Sonic Adventure that said “You and I are the same in a way that we have our own styles that we wont change. Yours filled with evil, mine is not” got a whole different meaning. It tells that Super Sonic and Perfect Chaos both have the same chaos. It also truly represents the clash between chaos filled with evil and chaos filled with good
Nick, you absolutely delivered on this video. Thank you for this fantastic celebration of our blue (occasionally gold) boy and I'm looking forward to the next video, Sonic or not.
@TrainerblueTube urm...it doesn't, the Chaos Emeralds were used to trap all the evil in the world but after it backfired and made Kintobor into Robotnik, there was still evil in them. When Sonic first got them all, the rest of the evil went into his Super Form and corrupted it. Absolute power corrupts Absolutely.
It also fits nicely that Sonic's nemesis is a roboticist whose ultimate driving force seems to be absolute control. Capturing animals because they are unpredictable and turning them into loyal minions. Changing nature into industrial production. Sonic is the wildcard that shatters Eggman's cold industrial paradise. While the battle between Sonic and Chaos was one of destructive chaos vs harnessed chaos, the conflict between Sonic and Eggman is a battle between Chaos and Order. Perhaps the reason Eggman keeps trying to harness the Chaos Emeralds is because his ultimate goal is to bring the ultimate force of unpredictability into his system, and the reason he fails is because the Emeralds themselves resist being used in this way. Only one who represents a force of Chaos themselves can use the power of Chaos properly.
Something you didn't mentioion that I felt was important is that chaos energy is stated to be tied to extreme emotions and not just anger like super saiyan. "Chaos is power enriched by the heart" as Tikal says. It's a good way to give the emeralds thematic relevance in a story because what could be more chaotic and confusing than emotions? Sonic may have beat the shit out of Chaos in a boss fight but THEMATICALLY be defeated him with the power of love so he wouldn't be sad anymore. Corny? Yeah. And I love it.
Used to think Goku would go Super Saiyan if he got all the Dragonballs due to Sonic getting the Emeralds. This was before I really got into the Dragonball series and learned otherwise since I was into the Sonic series first. Would have been interesting if Super Saiyan wasn't always available
Very eloquently put Nick. Once again you've released some grade A content. The way that you state your case, explaining the demeanor of Super Sonic and it's connection to the Super Saiyan form means that you've put great thought into it and it was a joy to listen to. You are and enlightened individual.
I like to believe they’re **Chaos** Emeralds because they’re powers aren’t set in stone, there isn’t any order in what they can do because they can do anything without prediction, they’re infinite only limited by their user’s imagination.
I don't know what it is but your delivery and the themes you choose really connect with me in a deep way. Please keep exploring the emotional core of the sonic universe.
Fun fact actually: The manga chapter that the Super Saiyan transformation debuted in was actually released in March 26, at least from the research I’ve done.
Didn't expect this video to go so deep into the parallel with the Super Saiyan transformation. I loved the similarities when I was a kid since I was (and still am) a fan of both these series. :D
Sonic Adventure was my very first Sonic game and I immediately fell in love I didn't even know Super Sonic existed until Months after I finished Sonic's story and completed the other character's campaigns and it was such a cool thing to come across. The feeling I felt when I saw him take the grey emeralds and still draw power from them after chaos had presumably won spoke volumes to me and still does to this day.
Actually no, the Super Saiyan made its debut in the anime ALSO in 1991. The issue here is that the Super Saiyan wouldn't be showed in English languages not until the 2000
I wanna add to the perspective of Super Sonic vs. Perfect Chaos with the lyrics of Open Your Heart adding to them personifying the two sides of chaos. "You and I are the same in the way that we have our own styles that we won't change; yours is filled with evil and mine's not! There is no way I can lose!" Might be looking too far into it myself cuz of me listening to Open Your Heart a lot more recently, but I think that's pretty cool. Nice analysis as always dude. ❤️
I don't usually comment on videos but I just wanted to say how much I really like your videos and how they sometimes give me a whole new perspective on the Sonic series and thus makes me appreciate it even more. I really love Super Sonic because I feel like he represents the overcoming of our obstacles and challenges, throughout our adventure we sometimes die or fail but we keep persevering through it all because we are determined to get to the end. I remember trying to get Super Sonic in Sonic 2 and constantly failing because I kept getting hit by bombs and ending up not getting enough rings but I tried to remember the layout of the special stages and kept on trying to get the Chaos Emeralds until I eventually did and was rewarded with Super Sonic. I really love the Perfect Chaos fight in particular because Perfect Chaos is made out of water and Sonic's weakness is not being able to swim, which kinda goes back to what I said about Super Sonic representing us growing as people and overcoming what we once feared and getting through tough times which is really cool imo. Though, this could be just how I see it.
I wonder what would be if Chaos (now no more corrupted) would absorb the positive energy of the emeralds. What would Chaos turn into, how would they look?
If A Hero Chaos Chao gives us any answers, then likley something similar to his Kaiju/Water Dragon form, but Seemingly more Angelic looking to display the Positive chaos Energy.
@@LeoSantano Reasonable approach. However, considering Chaos absorbed the negative powers, shouldn't Perfect Chaos have had a more "Dark Chaos Chao"/devilish look then? If anything, whether or not Chaos was a "Hero Chaos" or "Dark Chaos" in his base form both would have a variation of the Perfect Chaos transformation, imo. We don't know how Chaos Chao relate to Chaos if at all. One was mutated the other was raised.
I am surprised you didn't mention the importance of Tikal's prayer when it comes to harnessing the power of Chaos, especially relating it to Super Sonic. *Chaos is power, enriched by the heart. The controller serves to unify the chaos.* As you mentioned we see two different sides of Chaos being used. One to destroy anything and everything in it's path, and the other to protect.
Super Sonic has always been one of my favourite parts of Sonic lore, in all his forms. I've never been good enough at video games to actually achieve the form on my own: I have a used copy of Classic Collection for the DS, which has all Emeralds as Sonic on its solo Sonic 3 file, and that's basically my singular option to play as him. But then, from a lore perspective, I still end up appreciating the idea. Sonic isn't constrained by anything, of _course_ he'd be able to push past the limits of his base form. In fact, that lack of game ability actually played a role in my opinion on how I prefer the form to work: Because I care more about story than gameplay, I've always preferred it when Super Sonic is only brought out for the finale. It just feels more dramatic than it being a form he can break out anywhere. I have no doubt that he _could_ bring it out anywhere, but for story reasons I like when it isn't. Sonic doesn't _need_ Super form to deal with Eggman's nonsense, not anymore, anyway. I'm generally not a proponent of the "Sonic gets more powerful with every game" theory, but I can totally buy that Super Sonic just isn't something Sonic needs to fight Eggman post-classics. As for the Fleetway version... well, one of my favourite tropes is the Superpowered Evil Side, so.... yeah, I kinda love it. As far as corrupted Super forms go, it's _way_ better than fuccin' Dark Super, which is just the most basic option they could've gone for. And with the general personality of STC's Sonic, and the lore surrounding the Chaos Emeralds in that universe (STC is _very_ different, basically nothing is the same as it is in the games, but I don't really think that's a bad thing), it does at least make sense. I could see that version of Super Sonic working as a sort of... incomplete form. What would happen if Sonic lost control, if he tried transforming without all of the Emeralds. More like what would really happen if Sonic was overwhelmed by the negativity that created Perfect Chaos and the Ultimate forms of the Gizoids, instead of some generic darkness form.
Wow, what a day!!... I decided to take my sister out to go see The Sonic Movie 2 today since I've been really down in the dumps about myself and a lot of my past issues lately. After the absolute MASTERPIECE of a movie that was, we went home and I got on the phone with one of my Bois from middle school, specifically my Sonic obsessed friend so we could nerd out over the movie! This evening, we talked for a nonstop 4 hours, catching up on each others lives and discussing our favorite franchises! We ended the call with plans for a Steven Universe Bingeathon in the upcoming week, and he recommended this video to me after we hung up. This is where you hit me. That last line you stated in the video about smiling in life's face and learning to control the chaos really truly resonated with me, and I genuinely cannot thank you enough for giving me such a perfect end to such an awesome day!! These are the kinds of days that we have to cherish between the chaos!..

Excellent video, as always. That has definitely given me another perspective on the 'chaotic' power that is Super Sonic. You have reminded me of one of my favourite childhood memories: watching Sonic X Ep. 26 and seeing Sonic transform for the first time in a short-but-sweet sequence where he destroys Eggman's Mech and saves Chris. The animation, design and colouring of the transformation, and the way he blasts through the Mech is what I love about Super Sonic; just like you said, chaos doesn't have to be a negative thing.
I think the adventure area absolutely does super sonic really well. Chaos is always portrayed as negative in most media. Chaos for super sonic exemplifies sonics willingness to do whatever he wants whenever he wants. Sonic as a character is just pure chaos (as hes portrayed in the adventure titles). Even the choice in music represents just doing whatever (rock). It doesn't matter in and of itself does an amazing job showing off Sonic's character and the entire reason why he can BE chaos. Im not saying all of this is intentional, but it all fits together extremely well. Both super saiyan and super sonic also do an extremely good job in using the fact that, in Japan, blond hair is usually frowned upon. For many, being seen as a "delinquent" is a sign of freedom and just general chaosz but isn't always a bad thing.
When I was 8 and had Sonic 2, I became a Sonic fanatic, and it drove me crazy to have never seen Super Sonic. This was before the internet too, so I couldn't just look him up. @@lerona.martyr3811 I know I’m saying I really enjoyed that Dynamic
I wish Sonic Team hires Ian Flynn to be THE Main Writer for Sonic.
I don't know who they need, but they definitely need someone different from whoever they've got now.
I think the best story we’ve ever had was sa2
I mean hiring someone whose actually a Sonic fan and is knowledgeable about the franchise is just common sense, too bad this is Sega we're dealing with lol!
Ha! That’ll be the day….

By that logic Cosmos, despite the fact it’s not in the mythology, should be the antithesis because it ends at everything, rebirth and all that.
@@justcallmekai1554 Yeah Mogul called it a cosmic punchline he's gotten tired of. Which is actually pretty damn insightful of him.
Came here to talk about a golden hedgehog, came out contemplating life.
Not alone. 💪
I am of course talking about our boy Eggman
11:13 this moment still sends shivers down my spine you did an amazing job hyping us up.
"Goku is the OG he can dye it whatever he damn well pleases" Truer words have never been said
Something about modern Sonics design that I really like is his red eyes.
JUST MAKE A HYPER FORM WITH THE WISPS-
Aren't Hyper Sonic's eyes green?
@@x-mighty7602 It might just be my memory from Sonic 3 AIR, and not the original, but Hyper has red eyes there.
I think all types of wisp can be infused into super Sonic so he can go hyper and do basically a perfect final color blaster.
This channel always get me in the feels, and reminds me why I will always love the sonic franchise even in it’s worst times.
This is Chaos Controlled, This is Perfect Chaos, This is Super Sonic!"
I literally heard those words echo in the back of my mind the first time I saw Sonic 2 when it originally came out!
Small note : Hyper sonic actually has 2 differeny color sets, the rainbow one we already know, but it can also be a silver/white one. Since all colors of the rainbow when mixed together results in the color white
You can't make fan comics have the flashing colors, there isnt two color sets just one and a "good enough" solid white color for the comics
Won't lie, a life without chaos isn't a life worth living
Open your heart, it's gonna be alright
As chaotic as this fandom is, it will always warm my heart to hear the loyal fans of this blue blur can always see sonic what he can and could be!
#Happy30thSonic
Its honestly why i love and stick with the series even after shit like like Boom, Lost World and Forces. I know this series can reach the greatness it has had before with the classics, Adventure games, Unleashed, Generations and Colors and the potential and ambition 06 had. Not to mention the handheld games being great side games like Advance and Rush. Even its lore has a great amount of depth, its characters being great(besides the meta era which i hope we leave behind) and the messages these games subliminaly leave behind
“Why Super Sonic matters.”

The perfect chaos
*I see what you’re doing,and I like it*
so is that the pun inspiration?
@@NewiDeltafell yes
As you described Super Sonic as the true embodiment of Perfect Chaos, I was reminded Eggman made a similar revelation while in jail under the Iron King and Queen’s regime in the Archie Comic series
Gosh darn it you got me with that “perfect chaos” transition 🔥
In the Fleetway Comics the chaos emeralds were created by attempting to draw and compress evil into them. I guess okd Kintobor was trying to purify the world but messed up
Exactly this.
Happy birthday, Sonic!
Yes, I am totally explaining this wrong.
when you reached the perfect chaos (super sonic explanation) and gave the speech of embrace chaos it gave me chills, great job man
After watching this video the lyrics in Open Your Heart from Sonic Adventure that said “You and I are the same in a way that we have our own styles that we wont change.
Sega & Sonic Team should Canonized Fleetway's Version, & Rename him "Chaos Sonic".
No.
Honestly, I don't like the Sonic games but I love that you do and that it resonates so well with you. Rock on, homeskillet
Corny? Yeah. And I love it.
makes the emeralds more complex than just "battery for hedgehogs"
Used to think Goku would go Super Saiyan if he got all the Dragonballs due to Sonic getting the Emeralds. This was before I really got into the Dragonball series and learned otherwise since I was into the Sonic series first. Would have been interesting if Super Saiyan wasn't always available
that mic drop of “that’s not perfect chaos this is” gives me chills
11:08 "That ain't perfect chaos. This is." *Open Your Heart starting riff*
Super sonic is a great reminder of how no matter how impatient sonic can get he still knows when to slow down and take care of something
People freaking out about different series lifting from Dragon Ball are the epitome of "Simpsons Did It" syndrome.
"Tikal: The 7 Emeralds are the servers. Chaos is power, enriched by the heart. The controller serves to unify the chaos.
If I had a dime every time he said Chaos in this video, I'd have to many to count.
Basically, Super Sonic went from being just a Super Saiyan-inspired powerup reward for pro players to being a godlike living symbol of light.
I don’t know how you always manage to give me chills when I watch your videos😭
Didn't expect this video to go so deep into the parallel with the Super Saiyan transformation. I loved the similarities when I was a kid since I was (and still am) a fan of both these series. :D
That last tangent at the end, tho.
The issue here is that the Super Saiyan wouldn't be showed in English languages not until the 2000
What about the manga?
Or did you mean the manga?
Edit: Oh I see what you were referring to
I wanna add to the perspective of Super Sonic vs. Perfect Chaos with the lyrics of Open Your Heart adding to them personifying the two sides of chaos.
"You and I are the same in the way that we have our own styles that we won't change; yours is filled with evil and mine's not! There is no way I can lose!"
Might be looking too far into it myself cuz of me listening to Open Your Heart a lot more recently, but I think that's pretty cool. Nice analysis as always dude. ❤️
Damn this is definitely one of your best videos yet, Nick. Fantastic job.
Good question
Piss water Chaos
I am surprised you didn't mention the importance of Tikal's prayer when it comes to harnessing the power of Chaos, especially relating it to Super Sonic.
*Chaos is power, enriched by the heart. The controller serves to unify the chaos.*
As you mentioned we see two different sides of Chaos being used.
Holy cow keeping the great day rolling! Thank you so much! Especially seeing as this is kinda an old video...

Remember when Super Sonic was an option that had different outcomes/endings rather than a Plot Device.
Well he's that in Mania, but nowadays in the mainline 3D games he's been reduced to an unlockable god mode, and sometimes even DLC.

Facts: Hedgehogs don't have quills. They have spines.
I love Sonic, Shadow and the others, they are my heroes.
Honestly, all jokes aside when I first think of Chaos I think of the water monster Chaos
When i hear about the word chaos i remember of Shadow The Hedgehog screaming "CHAOS CONTROL!"
