Being valid means that the best genes of your parents were used to make you, but if there was no good gene in your parents for X trait, then you'll still have that defect. Eugene for example, is valid, and clearly an alcoholic.
@@conatcha When he's going the first day he has a fight with Eugene because the guy had been drinking vodka and the pee samples were tainted. So the pee failed the substance test (too much alcohol). It would probably be more clear if it gave a data read out, not just the face. But they probably kept it as the face because of the scene at the end..
Not accurate enough. Fingerprint's are easily manipulated - especially when they need to be on file. If someone were to take a piece of tape and apply it to your phone after you unlocked it, then pull it off, and reapply the resulting imprint via the right chemical (similar to glue) to a new surface, they'd have your fingerprint. Even using basic tape you can replicate this, you just need to transfer the print twice to make sure the mirror image is properly flipped back after you transfer it. This can be accomplished with basic tape - it may take a dozen attempts to get it to scan, but eventually it will. It helps to have a prosthesis mold, that'll typically beat a reader every time. See the mythbusters episode if you want a more thorough examination, I could explain further but they did an excellent roundup of modern fingerprint scanners, and they're woefully inadequate and prone to errors and methods of subverting them. They're using borderline analog equipment. Meanwhile devices will always be designed cheaply and without necessary medical oversight - using these devices for identification purposes they likely aren't medical grade. The doctor's equipment likely is, but this is somewhat hidden in the film by the fact that the doctor is either aloof, willfully ignorant or complacent in the subversion. He likely noticed something was off but let it go repeatedly out of malaise and sympathy, given his families circumstances (noted at the end of the film). He's also a little bit teasing in every scene about this, noting how his performance isn't often as good as he thinks it is. He makes the same comment about his "exceptional hardware" every time he's in here, which is also a subtle nod that it might look better than it should. He makes the same joke every time and notes that Jerome is never shy - which most men likely are due to the fact he has to medically see them urinate. There's also a lot of incentive for these devices to capture someone's DNA and sample it, it is a commodity there and as such - companies would want to eliminate any doubt and also take a peek at what genetics a person has. It's exploitative, but that's often how major corporations work. At the same time this superficiality and brusque brutal aesthetic is symbolic of their bankruptcy. All aesthetics, but the core tools underneath are simplistic - buildings might look fancy, but they're just concrete with limited walls built for aesthetic and not function. Their value are superficial, which is why their scanners are underdeveloped. They don't actually look hard enough at subjects and don't care about the pain they inflict upon them because it's seen as utilitarian - serving the corporation they work with more than the individual, regardless of the harm. Anyway, just being informative. It's a cool movie, it's thought through in a way that's easily missed.
It's later explained the doctor's son was also born with a genetic defect that will prevent him from joining Gattaca. It's implied the doctor knew the whole time and used Vincent as an example of someone who succeeded in spite of their genetics, and because of this his son looked up to Vincent.
@@zed625 Yes, and the implication about Vincent's "equipment" is that he must have been using some type of prosthetic to conceal the fact that he was producing false urine.

looking back at the Doctor's jabs and mannerisms and talk about his son it seems clear that he knew all along.
Yep, he sure did

I don't know why do they have constantly pass substance tests. Don't they have proved they are valid before?

A substance test is a drug test. normally

A fingerprint scan would be less painful:)
With all that super technology, I am sure they would have it available:).
Even my phone can do that :)
