I still have difficulty wrapping my brain around the fact that "The creator of Ratboygenius was the 12-fingered piano player in Gattaca" is an actual true statement and not a random mishmash of words thrown together in the washing machine of my mind.
As a pianist, I absolutely love this scene. The original piece is Schubert's Impromptu #3, but as the pianist is supposed to have 12 fingers, they added a melody on top you can't play in reality. Actually, you don't need 12 fingers to play it but 3 hands ! This is such a beautiful piece, that catches both lovely and dramatic sides. Masterpiece !
A lot of it could be done with hand crossings. However, we see one point on camera where there's no hand crossing and a two-octave spread in the right hand would be needed.
This true, one extra finger gets you over another octave up? I can do a variant where I cross my left hand over to do some of the higher notes sounds cool
@@adamwarlock8263 yeh do you play the piano? That extra reach you speak of is nonsense, the added notes are a full octave up, way out of reach that another finger would afford you
I haven't watched the movie, but I guess it's so that we don't notice he has polydactyly before the end of the piece EDIT: I watched the movie and it's definitely to reveal it dramatically

Why can't we see his hands? Watching a pianist's hands while he plays is one of the most mesmerizing and satisfying things in the world!
Flamery Blurs Because he doesn't actually have 12 fingers so they wouldn't be able to fake it

Look up "Horowitz Schubert Op 90 No 3", then click the first video. It's the exact same song, played much better by a master
at the moment he throws the glove and raises his hand you can see 6 fingers
So the person apparently in this scene is the same person who made Ratboygenius
That's actually why I looked this up.
Seymour Butts Which person exactly?

The pianist.
Someguy on TH-cam Jesus, that's trippy.
So I'm not the only one who did a research
i love schubert's piece and the new melody line they added is just so original and beautiful!
Such a brilliantly executed film in every bloody way.
welp, apparently this man brought us ratboy genius.
thank you.
This is your daily reminder that this is the same guy who wrote a song about loving and making Potato Knishes and Little black squash balls.
You just know after she says the piece can only be played with 12 fingers, Vincent is thinking "says who?"
Impromptu in G♭ major, Op.90 No.3, Schubert
Horowitz plays it much better
Brendel plays it masterfully, worth a listen for sure.
I’m working on it now myself and the way he can let that melody float is just amazing.
Beautiful
This man is talented. Someone bring him some potato knishes
All this time and I've never noticed, that the cop is Hank!! Uncanny!!
"Jesus Christ, Marie! The man was injured, not crippled!"

Don't take it literally, he meant 5 or 6 fingers does not really matter, but more how emotionally the pianist is implied in his play.
You're missing the point of the line. It is an allegory for the entire movie.
