Guys, just a little background. James and his father were both officers in the British military. This was recorded as you see it. It was the first time James had actually sung this to his dad. His recording company wanted him to use 'Auto-Tune' but he refused because he wanted it to be real and full of genuine emotions because at the time, he thought his father was about die from Stage 4 kidney cancer, so you can understand his voice wavering a little towards the end. Honestly, I have no idea how he managed to get this done, but what a wonderful job he made of it. Great reactions you guys. Same as everyone else who watches this video for the first time!

So glad you reacted to this song. James, father who is in the video with him also was diagnosed with cancer and was going to pass away, this is why James wrote this song as a goodbye to his father while he was here to hear it instead of waiting until he was gone. This was written by James after his father was told it was highly unlikely that he would get the life-saving transplant he desperately needed. The good news is that only a few weeks after the song and video (yes that is James' dad) was released a donor was found and thankfully a couple of years on, his Dad is still alive. I love the song but for me, the fact that his dad witnessed the love and emotion from his son is beautiful. My dad died suddenly and I wish I'd been able to tell him just how wonderful he was to me and my children in such a lovely way. 😍

I lost my Dad in 2011, he was my everything and I never wanted to see him pass, I had hoped I'd go before him. Any way I was there as he was passing, holding his hand reminiscing (I know he heard me) rubbing his forehead. My sister and my dad's wife just sat there not touching or loving him at all. It was all me, but I never said goodbye, I just told him to say hello to those other precious people we lost and I'd see him again and be waiting there to hold my hand. Never heard this song but it is beautiful 💕💕💕

It is now August 17, 2024. I had not encountered this song until last year. I'm 64. My dad was the monster when I was a kid. He beat me relentlessly, I was terrified to come home from school, every day. He died in 2011 and I felt nothing. Not joy, not relief, not sorrow. Nothing. So watching this and hearing the phrase "There's no need to forgive, no need to forget. I know your mistakes and you know mine" that phrase grabs me by the guts. It never occurred to me he had his demons too. I managed to admit there was something wrong with me in the late eighties and I got help. In his reality there was no help to get. No one to tell. All he had was his rage, and that never comes from nowhere. After this song, I can manage some forgiveness, and perhaps some love and understanding. I cry like a baby every single time I hear this (especially when seeing a reaction like yours). Hearing your story about how good your dad was and that he didn't have it good when he was a kid, I'm glad he stopped the cycle. That is a Herculean task, to overcome his childhood. I hope he found some love and forgiveness for his dad.

His dad had stage 4 kidney failure when James wrote this and a donor couldn't be found. After the video was released a distant cousin came forward who was a match. He donated all the profits from this song to Help For Hero's a UK veterans charity (both him and his dad were in the military). They did this in one take and at the end everyone in the studio was crying except James' dad who said 'why all this I'm not gone yet'.

Thank you both for this. Your son is in good hands. Please don't apologize for being emotional ---- human! A person would have to be dead inside not to feel this remarkable tribute, even if the exact circumstance doesn't apply. James is so underrated. He's good friends with Ed Sheeran, and equally talented, but lacks the recognition as an incredible song writer. He said only one take and no auto tune (the record company tried to fight him on that). He wanted it to be true, raw, and real ---- like those things that happen to us all. We have no auto tune for our lives. Don't know how he got through it. His military training might have helped, but he didn't block his emotions, as Brits (especially military) so often do. (I know. I am one, but learned to break through that rigidity.) So glad that a distant cousin heard the song and saw the video when it was released and turned out to be a match. His dad only had one kidney left after donating one for someone, which made the situation even more dire. As far as I know, he's healthy and doing well now. Thanks again, guys. Take care.

I cant listen to this song without crying. I don’t know how James got through the song with his dad right there beside him.

I can never make it through this without tears. It's so cleansing for the soul and spirit to cry. Hugs to all as we share in this grief and relief.

I cry every time I listen to thing song. I think of my Mom, who has passed, when I hear this song. I didn’t have a Dad but my Mom was everything to me.

Same. I come back to this song and various reactors to get in touch with my buried feelings, and I’m a mess by the second verse. His voice cuts into our souls.

This is the first TH-cam video to make me cry. I love this couple and it’s a privilege to see honest and real reactions to sorrow. It’s sadly a part of life. But it just made me cry all the way through. Thank you for being real.

Well I was hanging In there with you guys the whole time & was bawling my eyes out too. That was rough. As far as crying goes don't apologize. It's when you can't cry that you better worry about yourself. Love you guys

When this song came out, I had just lost my Dad. The medications had made him a different person. So the idea that I and my sisters could “chase the monsters away” felt only too real. I cried like a baby listening to this song.

I grew up without a father but I loved my father in law, i had to watch him waste away to Cancer and i cannot hear this song without crying, I'm 41. Don't ever be afraid to cry, it doesn't make you less of a man.

You two are gonna be the parents every child needs and deserves. That is his father and they both were military officers in the British Army.

I cannot thank you enough for sharing your emotions, including your tears, with us. I have been living with and caring for my 90 year old mother for 3 years now, and the time is very close. She has dementia now and she is so afraid. In trying to be strong for her I have not, until now, allowed myself to cry. You fixed that problem. The two of you have honestly been my refuge lately. May God bless you and keep you.
