When James was sitting next to his father, he was unaware that this song would save his father. I believe one of his cousins heard the song and took the test to see whether his was compatible, which he was. This saved his father's life.

When this song was released, Colonel Blunt had already been a kidney donor.. then, when he was diagnosed with Kidney Disease,he was of course Stage 4 because he did not have his other kidney to rely on. After the song release, with the video, a distant Cousin of the Colonel’s came forward to be tested for potential kidney donation. They were a match & saved his life. The song was written & performed with all proceeds going to the British Forces Charity ‘Help for Hero’s’.
James followed in his Father’s footsteps & became Captain in the British Army. Back in 1999, when his Father was deployed to Kosovo, James said to his Father ‘I’m not your Son, you’re not my Father, we are two men saying goodbye’. As Soldier to Soldier rather than Son to Father.

James and his father were both high ranking officers in the British army, James a Captain and his father a Colonel, you don't show emotions or weakness, as we say in England a stiff upper lip.
His father agreed to be in this video, which makes it more heartbreaking, it was recorded in one take...
All moneys made from this song James gave to British veterans charities..

For all you who serve-James’ father (here in the video) is Colonel Charles Blunt and James was also an army officer.
    The line
“😢I’m not your son you’re not my father we’re just two grown men saying goodbye”
was what James said to his father as he left for his first tour ( when they both knew James could be killed). At the time of recording this video they both believed Charles was about to die.
Everyone in the studio was crying except Colonel Charles, who was comforting James as you can see. He said “Why are you all crying, I’m not dead yet”.
It was after this video went out that a distant relative saw it, and he was a match for a kidney ❗️

I truly think that this song and video with all of the raw emotion is arguably the best song written. Then the video, I have watched it about 30 times when people react and I still cry because I lost my mom and dad young. So this video and the song fits. I was with both of my parents when they passed. I was holding their hands. I told my dad that I will be alright cause I was his only girl, I loved my daddy so much! Anyway I told him that I would be ok he needs to go. 45 seconds later he was gone. I had to watch my mom bleed to death. I can’t unsee that. She had a blood disorder and she was on a blood thinner for a blood clot. And she started bleeding internally and then it started coming out of her eyes, ears, nose, and mouth. They had to tape her eyes shut. It was the worse thing that I have ever witnessed in my life! My mom was a wonderful person she was a mom that loved her kids and husband more than anything! She was as close to a saint and I mean that. I was holding her hand it was still warm so I felt safe and then it went cold. I have never got over either death. People used to ask me what my biggest fear was and I said it was losing my parents. They were my everything! So please anyone that reads this please love you mom and dad because when they are gone that emptiness is so hard. I miss them more than I can say. So Tom thank you for reacting I am really happy that you could feel this song.

James has such a unique voice and this was a very emotional performance. When he recorded the song there was no matching donor so James expected his dad to die. After the recording the whole team was crying but not not his dad. He said: "Why is everyone crying, I'm still here?" The producers wanted to edit out the cracks in James' voice but he refused because he wanted it to be 100% real and honest.
Monsters is one of the saddest songs I know. Another one is "How could you leave us" by NF. He wrote the song after his mom died from an overdose of pills.

Just a slight correction, not that it is very important. Dad had kidney failure and, being a donor himself, only had one and was dying because they could not find a matching kidney. Tom, at the time he recorded this, there was no hope for his dad recovering because they couldn't find a matching doner. As someone else said, this song saved his life when a distant cousin saw it & ended up being a match! He & his dad both served in the British Royal Army so this had to be difficult for both being "hard butt" soldiers! More male reactors wept over this than females - "Patrol Gaming" (he had to leave for several minutes), "Birdman's Place", Vocal Coach, Adam Mishan, "The King Family", Lucas Hassel & many more! My eyes have "leaked" every time I've watched this even knowing that his dad is still alive! His raw emotion is just gut wrenching! Let's have some more gorgeous Home Free Christmas or their silliness & Have a Merry Christmas!

The Patrol Gming reaction was very emotional, since the song was very similar to his story, and the story he shared about his dad was very touching.
I first heard this song when I got in the car in the hospital parking lot after spending the night with my dad. We had talked all night and had said everything to one another that we wanted to say, and he died about 2 weeks later. When I got in the car that morning and heard this song, I started bawling like a 225 lb baby. It still really gets to me.

Despite a military career (1978-2008 Royal Marine) my first reaction to this video was uncontrollable tears. My father, a veteran RAF pilot of WW2 would understand as he tried to explain, the evening he died, that even bootnecks are allowed to cry.

I’ll admit that if I hadn’t met her at the time there’s no doubt that I would have followed in the footsteps of a few mates that couldn’t cope with ptsd and civilian life.

Tom, you said a very important thing, (without realizing it I think), the fact that James's father agreed to be in his sons tribute song to him shows his dad was chasing his sons monsters away still, (or also). So, bottom line his dad was there for his son, and his son was letting his dad know he was there for him. The love between father and son may not always be obvious, (stiff upper lip and all), but there is an unspoken bond of mutual love non the less.

Hi Tom, most folks don't notice his dad actually grips James arm to 'comfort 'him' near the end of the recording, so shows his dad is still in charge doing what dads do best. Now if only it had been like that for me and my dads non relationship. Dammed. Cheers DougT in UK

I keep wanting to yell at the reactor - "Don't quit yet - wait til the very end." The dad's grip on his son's arm sums it all up and adds closure.

The story goes that James' record company tried to get him to use 'Auto-Tune' but he refused because he wanted this amazing song to be recorded exactly as we see it, full of emotion. This was the first time he'd sung the song to his dad, so I can understand his emotions nearly getting the better of him towards the end. It's an amazing song and I really don't know how he managed to do it so beautifully.

Today, my family and I were given the devastating news that my mother has stage 4 liver and lung cancer. I had to stay strong for my siblings as I lived with my mom for the last 20 years. I kept it all in, and then I watched this video and reaction. I lost it ....I am sobbing right now and can't stop. That's enough TH-cam for today.

Not taking away from anyone who is a daughter or mother but a father / son relationship is on another level. It is a silent love and respect.

His Dad was Brit ex-military, as is Blunt. Expressing emotion is verboten. HAVING emotion is encouraged...you just can't show it. Except perhaps in a most wonderful song of pure love and respect and tenderness. Heart-rending and SO enjoyable. Cathartic. Bravo, James.

James dad was actually dying from kidney disease & this was his tribute & farewell to his dad. Thankfully his dad received a donor kidney & is doing okay now. If this song doesn't get to you emotionally, there is something wrong with you. This song resonates with me as I was my dad's caregiver for 5 years until he passed away 2 years ago.

We all have dads and we all understand the inevitability of death. This exquisitely emotes the pain and helplessness of losing a parent but also losing someone sooner than the fullness of their life span. What a cathartic release and homage to the love between them.

This song gives everyone the opportunity to reflect on those that mean this much to them; that have taken some sort of significant role for them during growing up (be that dad, mum, step parents, adoptive parents, grandparents or special people that have contributed in a meaningful way to them becoming the adult that they are); that have "helped deal with those "monsters"....and now the roles are reversed. Upon reflecting it gives you the opportunity to make the most of those relationships, if the person is still alive; to mend fences....and if they're gone, to remember, with gratitude how they helped build, and clear, the path you could travel. James is an amazing singer, songwriter and performer who holds nothing back. Crying is good for you. You are human. It reminds you that you are alive and able to feel. I miss my Dad....we had our battles, but e really was a very fine man. I miss my Mum immensely and my step dad too. Let people know how important they are while you have he chance.
