Ford Ranger 2017 3.2 Wildtrak (ENG) - Test Drive and Review

  • Ford Ranger is F-150’s little brother. This 2017 Ford Ranger is powered by a 3.2 litre engine making it a monster truck by European standards. Ford Ranger is currently a mid-size pick-up. Ford F-150 is a full-size pick-up. With too small a gap between them, and pick-up sales are declining, Ford Ranger is unavailable in the US (but it is coming back next year).In some markets Ford Ranger is also known as Mazda BT-50. This generation is on the market since 2011, and was given a facelift in 2015. Ford Ranger is offered either as a single cab, extended cab or a double cab. There’s either a 4-cylinder 2.2 litre diesel 130 or 160 hp, or a 3.2 litre 5-cylinder diesel producing 200 hp. Earlier models have Euro 6 engines, later examples are Euro 6 compliant, which means they have to take AdBlue.

    "Pickup sales are declining, so no Ranger for you, North America."
    You might want to re-think that statement, mate. Ford North America has confirmed the Ranger will be appearing stateside as early as next year.

      Problem is reliability. We only have Ford in our fleet, and we need pickups now, but we only heard problems regarding the Ranger. So we will most likely go Toyota Hilux. Which sucks. But what can you do?

    As always, a very good review. Ford has reconsidered and the USA will be getting the Ranger. Question: who produces the gloves you were wearing? It appears you can use the touch screen while wearing them.

    • @MarekDrives

      These are North Face e-Tips. Too thin. Good for early autumn at best, and they soak up pretty quickly. Go for something leather. And dig though your smartphone menu. Mine has an option to work with just about any gloves. On Android go to Settings->Display->Glove mode. I'm not sure if all phones have this, but take a look.

    Good, Honest, accurate review. I've had a Wildtrak for about two weeks now, really happy with the car, but I have some of the same issues as described here. That Mountaintop roll cover is a badly made piece of kit, especailly considering it cost nearly £2000! Only Other thing I hate about the vehicle is the exposed lip of the tailgate, its just going to get trashed as quickly, but you cant cover it with anything as this will stop the roll cover from closing. Overall though, probably the best pick up on the market. I tested all of them before the ranger, hilux was easily the best but it had a pathetic 2.4 engine, so the ranger takes it!

    If you tug the roller top cord to the right it goes back on it’s own. No need to shove it. Also pulling back into place is very light. Not sure what you’re doing but it definitely isn’t that hard

    I have this Ranger 3.2 Auto and have to say after 6 months ownership love it...Having had three previous Toyota Hilux Invincible I hated the feminine Asian look of the new Hilux so went for this and Glad i did it has proved superb...it is manly it is powerful and handles well. I tow regular a 2 ton trailer and it is effort less...I will have another in 3 years. First Ford I have owned it is not built as well as the Toyota but delivers in every other department.

    This video was made back in 2017. Since than, truck sales groow in USA with 25%(statistic made by a period of 3 years). Best seling motor vehical in the states was the Ford F150, full stop. And because of the pandemic, car sales dropped by 56% and truck sales only by 20%(statistic made only for pandemic period). In Europe we had a growth of only 15% of trucks in the past 3 years. I love these trukcs, and I hope al the electric models come out soon, so the discusion of gas gasoling will come to an end.

    Marek thanks for showing me the Ford Ranger Wildtrack 3.3 ltre. 4 WD. I live in Thailand and have just purchased one and love it in the whole. However I have a problem because the drivers manual is in Thai!! I am English and was told by the local Ford outlet that I cannot purchase and English version. I know that I can look on line but I'm old school and like to read a manual.
    Have you any ideas where I can buy one please?
    Hopefully you can help. I enjoy your vlogs.

      A number of reasons. GW is unavailable in Poland, so no problem there ;) SY is available, I haven't seen one on the streets in ages, and the last one I saw was a press office Tivoli. They don't seem to be selling very many. My experience with SY brand is that it's outdated KIA/Hyundai quality for new KIA/Hyundai price.

    It's funny you'd say that 3.2 engine is a monster by European standards. My F-150 has a 5.4 liter v8 engine. It's not even considered that big of an engine in America

    • @MarekDrives
      @MarekDrives 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      What can I say? Fuel prices, emissions, taxes. In some European countries you pay higher excise duty on engines with displacement higher than 2 litres, as they are called "luxury" :)

    • @Moonless6491
      @Moonless6491 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@MarekDrives I' m by no means bashing European rules or preferences. I just find the different ways of looking at things fascinating. Many people in America have been begging the car companies to bring back small trucks like the Chevy s-10. Bigger isn't always better for intended use.

    • @MarekDrives
      @MarekDrives 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I didn't feel you were bashing European regulations. And it's pretty much all down to regulations. In order to drive these cars with a regular car license they need to have GVM of up to 3.5 tons. So in case of this car it's probably a ton of payload. That's nothing. But if it exceeded 3.5 tons that would require the driver has a truck license, AND it would force the driver to pay truck toll on public roads. Hitch a trailer to this thing, and you're almost certainly above 3.5 tons, so it's extra toll, etc.
      So owning something like an F-250 or larger in Europe would not only cost a fortune to fill, but would also be a pain in the butt to use. I suspect the driver would even need to install a tachograph, drive according to truck speed limits, etc.

    • @Moonless6491
      @Moonless6491 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@MarekDrives wow that's a alot of regulation. We can tow a trailer with a loaded trailer weight of 10,000 pounds (4,535kg) as long as the combined weight of the tow vehicle and loaded trailer is less than 26,000 pounds (11,793kg) without the need for a CDL license.

I want a truck, not a computer on wheels that looks like it was designed by a congressional committee on drugs! I"ll give Ford credit, when they screw something up, they really don't mess around! If I am going to buy something this big then I'll go the extra distance and get a full sized F-150 and let Ford keep whatever this piece of crap is supposed to be! The ford ranger in thailand and australia will have this name (tb 50). Mazda collaborate with ford and use the same engine in their car.

    As a regular European i don't see why I would ever buy a pick-up truck. It just seems pointless to me. But then again, who would've ever thought that everyone is buying SUVs nowadays...

    • @MarekDrives
      @MarekDrives 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      In some countries it was popular due to company tax. For example in Poland at some stage you could write off full VAT on purchase of a "delivery vehicle" and all fuel, maintenance costs, as long as this "delivery vehicle" met certain criteria. First there was a fixed divider between cargo and passenger compartment, so special grill was installed in station wagons and SUVs. Next idea was to have the cargo space a certain length in relation to overall car length, and only pickups met this requirement.

    • @LanceEichenberger
      @LanceEichenberger 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Switzerland too: the tax and insurance as 'small camion'. like a transport van. And it's the right vehicul for working or pull a trailer much better than one of those glossy highway SUVs. i've got a new one in 2003 and still have it. the only thing I'm really missing is the 6th gear and a front diff lock. but its allways much better than these "synchros".

    Very good review. Saw it twice and during the second time I thought the pointed out disadvantages are not so important (I would buy it as a fun car, so I don't need it with best offroad capabilities). To me it just looks better than the Navara or Amarok. Would choose manual gear box anyway. What would you say: what speed on Motorway comes with "rest comfort"/isn't tooo noisy? (By the way, 50 grand I cannot afford and is in my opinion too much for this, but if I had 60 grand I would import my dream car that is much better for only 55.000 Dollaaaar: th-cam.com/video/HSMjMf9FvH4/w-d-xo.html )

    It seems a decent car but it's completely unclear why Ford brand strategists decided they need to sell a rebranded Mazda Pick-Up in Europe.

    • @MarekDrives
      @MarekDrives 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Mazda is small in Europe, so it makes sense to offer a model under a brand, which offers other vans/utility vehicles.

    • @ProBenja5
      @ProBenja5 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      In this case the Mazda is based on the Ford as the Ranger was designed in Australia then Mazda took the original and made the BT-50. That is why the Mazda has Ford engines and interiors.

    What a piece of junk & Ford put more plastic parts on it like its going to makes it more reliable, lost count how many here have caught fire here, hence there nickname “flaming Rangers” as of just recently recall on gear boxes.

    The new ford ranger is ugly!! Not like the classical 2011 look. Not really "Classical" but that slim single/extended cab look and old body was perfect. Looks and feels really comfortable for casual work. The new one like this looks like a Family cruise around town super pansy mode vehicle. Idk why but the 4 door trucks like this always make me think they're really SUV's with a small bed. Nothing in poor taste just isn't my cup of tea.
