  • 2016 VW Golf R Quick Take Review
    The 2016 VW Golf R uses Volkswagen’s familiar 2-litre four cylinder turbo and the company says it makes 292 horsepower and 280 pounds of torque. But that’s a lie. The aftermarket and enthusiast community have indeed discovered it makes a little bit more than those numbers. You can find that out on your own, but the consensus seems to be that the official numbers are a wee bit pessimistic.
    There’s the six speed dual clutch PDK gearbox of course, which definitely doesn’t get the credit that it’s due, and helping get all of this excessive power to the ground is the all wheel drive system.
    What is the Volkswagen Golf R? Is it a hot hatch or is it something more?

    5 years later... lol, but wanted to get your take on a Golf R. The 2022 Golf R seems pretty good as an all-around performer

      That was so long ago that I don’t even remember driving it.

    With a few exterior mods, it doesn't look like a boring sleeper anymore IMO (if you prefer it that way). On my Lapiz Blue R, I've got OEM tinted LED tails (like it comes with everywhere besides North America), Oettinger rear spoiler, and Neuspeed wheels (two different sets, for both summer and winter).

    Guess you haven't seen the Mk7 R go around The Ring!!! Other than that I agree with you, as I own one. Great car!

    Good review. In the US do you not get the option to turn the interior engine sound to 'Eco'?

      Nope. No start/stop, either.

    Great honest review... my company rented me one for a business trip and I felt the exact same way. Nothing overly special, overly beautiful, overly powerful or overly done. Just a no BS, does what you request kinda car.

    I bought and still own a 2004 R32 in Tornado Red. I have pampered it and it has low miles. 12 years later, when I drive it, it is still an epic amount of fun and driver engagement. My other cars are Porsches (911 turbo s, 911 Targa GTS, Boxster Spyder), so I think it is fair to say it is competing for my attention with some competitive stablemates. It isn't as refined but does have a go-kart fun factor for sure. I will never sell this car -- so much fun and so much car for the money.

      +Darrin Podeschi you had me at Boxster Spyder.

      Ahhh, the Boxster Spyder...that's how I found this review -- had just watched your review of the Spyder. That video totally captured what I think and feel about my Spyder...one of the best car reviews of any I have seen. Some people laugh at me when I tell them I love my Spyder more than any other car including my '15 Turbo S. The Spyder is totally engaging. Porsche nailed the alchemy of that car.

      Best car they made for the 2016 model year. The Turbo is brilliant, but there's nothing like that Spyder.

    Is the R worth the extra above a base GTI?

  • @HanLi1984
    @HanLi1984 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I kind of disagree with the track part, almost no car is track ready, even m3 m4 needs a better brake pad which doesn't fade. and the R is definitely good base for track tweaks. it's meant for that, otherwise why bother buying this. what bothers me, is your car red or blue? Lastly, the BEST part of your review is, thanks for putting that bike in the trunk! This is biggest reason why I prefer this over the new camaro ss or m2, lol. so I can fit in 2 bikes, and I can also go track, even it's slower it's still fun.

    • @BrianMakse
      @BrianMakse  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Plenty of cars are track ready, this one is not. The lap timer thing is just a gimmick, as proven by the endless comments here. Still, the car is wickedly versatile, but needs help from the aftermarket for it to be anything other than annoying on track.

    • @HanLi1984
      @HanLi1984 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Brian Makse what you are talking about is more like "race ready". tons of annoying cars on a "track day" that are far worse than the stock golf R, sir. if you know what I mean. this is more than enough for a track day. switch a pad if you are not confident on fading, that's it. but since you are professional racer I assume for your argument you are referring to much higher standard. to that point, yes you are right, but it still won't be annoying because you don't need to wait for a "pointby" you just fly through it with your track ready cars.

      Meh Review and yep he is not driving that blue car. Nor in the canyons. Not many sports cars are track ready cars.. 99% of halo cars still need pads, fluid and tires at the minimum.

    For the reason you stated,the car being a sleeper, is the reason I'd never buy it! I've owned & loved a $20,000 Golf. If I spend twice that for a new car, it better look like it!

    Video seems very fake with no passion. You're driving a red one, but only show the exterior of the blue one. Very distracting with you showing the blue one with the sound clip of the red one.
    It also can easily be a track car with a few tweaks.

    • @BrianMakse
      @BrianMakse  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That's the point. It's not track ready from the factory.

  • @jackywong6181

    Try the car on track and you will see.:)

    • @BrianMakse
      @BrianMakse  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Jacky - I already have a race car which has racing slicks, never mind racing brake pads. This R does not and, thus, is not track ready.

    • @jackywong6181
      @jackywong6181 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      i know you are a racing driver, don't judge the car with its ability without even trying on the track.
      ContiSportContact™ 5 P as standard tyre, large one piston brakes from GTI performance package, 340mm front rotor. search sandown race track in Melbourne. it is called a brake killer but the golf R hold up 5 full track days (9am-4pm. 25mins every hours track time) with plenty of brake meat left. for you what is not track ready is very very different to the 90% for the people who watch your video

    • @BrianMakse
      @BrianMakse  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      If anyone thinks it's a track car, they'll be disappointed when the tires go off and the stock brake pads fade. I'm not going to mislead anyone on that subject.

    • @jackywong6181
      @jackywong6181 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      of cuz is not a track competition car for professional racing to win a title ready car. But it will do well for 90% of the people who watch your video who maybe goes track day once or twice every months.for them the tires and pad are great, change the brake fluid every trackday before and after, never have any problem with brake fade.(using motul brake fluid 600). had my DBA rotor, Project mu pad and AD050 siting around, i brought them because i was thinking the stock one is not good enough but it wasnt. i'm not professional as you are but i think your track ready standard is setting too high for people who watch your video:)

    • @jackywong6181
      @jackywong6181 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      i think not much car is track ready, only i can think of the 4C and the lotus, or those crazy Ariel Atom race car. even the lamborghini aventador will have brake fade after only a few lap in sandown.
