My 600-lb Life is an American reality television series that has aired on the TLC television network since 2012. Each episode follows a year in the life of morbidly obese individuals, who usually begin the episode weighing at least 600 pounds (270 kg), and documents their attempts to reduce their weight to a healthy level. Update episodes, called "Where Are They Now?", feature one or more previous patients, picking up a year or more after their original episodes aired.
Patients are placed under the care of Iranian-American Houston surgeon Younan Nowzaradan (often referred to as simply "Dr. Now"), who first has them attempt losing weight on their own by following a strict diet, and then depending on the patient's progress may offer gastric bypass surgery or sleeve gastrectomy to further assist in weight loss.

I wonder if it would be a good idea to lock people up for a couple of years, feed them what the diet stipulates, nothing more, and have them exercise regularly?

As someone who used to run a busy Clinic, there is nothing more annoying than people failing to keep appointmentsv when you have a waiting list for a cancellation. It shows irresponsibility and inconsideration of others.

Ppl cancel appts for real reasons. It's easy to just assume ppl are irresponsible than understanding that shhh happens where a person can't make it. It's not all about you. Ppl have lives outside of their appointments. If a person makes an appointment they made it because they were available that day and time. If they can't make it, whatever happened makes that appointment need to take a back burner.

@@JennWatsonThere is a fee at my Psychiatrist’s office. Each appointment is $175. If you no call no show or don’t cancel 24 hours before the appointment your card is charged 50% of the cost. I’ve never missed an appointment.
Her grand kids or daughter did not cause her to gain weight. This is terrible!!! She keeps eating knowing this is causing others to suffer!!!!! Too.

I find it so hard to feel sorry for people who are given every opportunity and still fail!!!
That’s okay. You don’t have to feel sorry for them. As a recovering alcoholic who needed multiple opportunities and had access to a community (AA) that’s absolutely everywhere, I do feel sorry for them. But as a recovering alcoholic I also know that most folks can’t sympathize with the addict and that’s okay.
The place I go to meetings has meetings for overeaters as well, but it’s once a week unlike AA that has multiple meetings a day.
@@ladystoneheart8155 I’m also recovering alcoholic, 22 years. And yes it took me a few tries. But, the difference between you and me, and Chantal, is that we tried, and continued to try until we succeeded. She doesn’t even try.

Most of these people can barely move and can't walk, they are bed bound. Who the hell is bringing them all that food? Someone has to buy it at the store. If my mom, aunt, whatever was this big and in bed I would make her stay on a diet! Who cares if they get mad and yell? What are they gonna do? Get up and make dinner...not...

These people get all the help needed, but they don't even try. I was bullied as a kid and I ate junk all day long to feel better, then after gaining weight, I made a commitment to lose weight by cutting out junk food and reducing calories plus exercise...in a few months I was fit
And I never got big again 😊
Too bad Dr. Now can't isolate these people in a hospital for at least a year and put them on a strict controlled diet and exercise plan, because that's the only way to get some of them to lose weight since they can't seem to do it on their own.

At the tax payers expense? No thank you. It’s bad enough we pay for their existence as it is. They don’t deserve a penny. This is a chosen condition unlike someone who actually is unable to work through no fault of their own. They shouldn’t be able to get any money whatsoever

With hoarders, you can clear out their house, but it will all come back cause you did not take out the mental or behavioral trash. With these fat people, you can starve them and whip them, but they will not change until they get mental and behavioral assistance. 600 is a rock-bottom for most of us, but not them. I am sure people who have lap bands but who do not change bad habits are often still fat. They just eat a ton of small meals since their stomach are smaller. Many "Biggest Loser" contestants fell off the wagon. Good health is a journey not a destination- trite but true. You gotta fight day in and day out, but no one said life was easy 💪
True. They need rehab, but for food. You don't check out a crack addict and then send them home and say "Ok don't do no crack now.." 😂

Sorry to be the PC police but food deserts are a real thing. I live in a small town that only has a dollar general. There’s a farmers market in the summer but any other time of the year I have to drive across county lines to go to the grocery store.
You won't lose weight eating fruit. Cutting carbs is the only way to lose weight.
I would give them a diet they could stick to with unlimited portions of the right food.. a whole food plant based diet with no oil. As a bonus this diet would reverse their heart disease and diabetes.

I mean he has some harsh words for some patients but my impression was always that he has a lot of empathy for these patients, he understands their struggle and really gives them time, and barely gives up an anyone. Even when he sends people away theres always an open door for them to come back when they show their determination and willpower. I feel like he really wants to help them have a chance for a better and healthier life.

When I get the F°ck it's, I watch my 600# life. It helps motivate me cuz I do not want to be unattractive to my husband and I do not want to burden him. I want a companionship, a partnership not a caregiver/patient relationship. I needed to lose 30#. Today, I need to lose 26#, not bad for 2 weeks. Little by little, I will get there.
Why is there no psych help for these patients? They all very openly state that they have underlying trauma issues.
It's hard to be surprised at the failures when there's so little mental support
I understand, from what I've read elsewhere, that intensive psychotherapy - either face-to-face or virtual - is provided for all patients. They can't be forced to engage with it seriously, though. I've seen a couple of the really successful patients talking about it, and discussing its helpfulness with Dr Now.

It is sad that these people have an addiction and really need mental heath help. Even before dietary changes.
Nobody gets this. It's truly an addiction.
Given the state their body is in, they need physical AND psychiatric help equally urgently; their body can't wait for psychotherapy to start helping their mind.
And it appears, from what I've read about Dr Now's programme, that many of the patients don't really engage seriously with the psychotherapy provided, or at least not long-term, as they certainly need to.
