I worked on myself for months before I even started a program because I was so scared of failure and dying. Taking control of your mental health is essential to long term success. I absolutely LOVE his NO BULLSHIT approach. As a bariatric surgeon, he's likely heard every excuse imaginable, and his experience has taught him to recognize when patients are lying. They say, " I don't know why I haven't lost weight. I'm sticking to the diet and exercising ", but they are not just lying to him, they are lying to themselves. It's comical when he drops logic bombs like explaining a calorie deficit and how many calories they are consuming to either not lose any weight or gain 50+ lbs in a month - which means at the very least a person is consuming twice their daily caloric value in food. It astounds me. I completely sympathize with emotional eating, I've done it and still do occasionally; however, I still live in reality knowing I need to check myself if I don't want to end up like some of these patients. I feel bad for them, but not really because the onus is on them and those that enable them.
