I'm Finnish so sauna is an integral part of my culture. It's completely normal for most Finns to enjoy sauna at least once a week. Many have a sauna in their home, even some flats have a personal sauna and many flat buildings have a shared sauna in the basement. I have lived in the UK for 10 years and miss the sauna a lot. I dream of having one at home here one day! I know it's possible so looking into options 😊

@@LauraTryUK That's a good question and I can only guess the answer! Sauna has deep roots in the Nordic culture, spanning back thousands of years. To be honest, sauna has been so normal to me that I've only started to consider the health benefits now when others outside the culture have started talking about them. Makes me appreciate growing up with the opportunity even more.

Spent an afternoon there and did a few 25 min sauna sessions followed by dips in the adjoining ice lake, where further on people were skiing! 🥶 All ages were there, including some people with beers like a social event - that wouldn’t happen in the UK! My skin was amazing afterwards and I felt rejuvenated for hours. I’d love an outdoor sauna and cold plunge area at home but they’re super expensive.

I've been using the Sauna for a little over two months, 5 days a week after I work out, which has been instrumental to my overall health and, more importantly, my recovery. I highly recommend it

I love that you are going to try the monster session Brunhilda. I know it's obvious, but stay within your tolerance though and take loads of water. I'm currently on around 1.9kg of protein per kg of bodyweight, it seemed a lot at first but now I'm used to it, and it's certainly helped build my muscle, along with some hard-effort training. Speak to Phil The Blood man if you can, he is a wizard 🪄 I try my best to keep other people private, I'm sure they don't want to plastered over TH-cam without knowing.
If you are eating enough protein (1,2-2 g per kg of desired lean muscle mass) daily and good nutrition, it could be that your body type is ectormorph, which has a natural tendency to stay lean and toned rather than a visible increase muscle size.
I found a company in the UK that supplies parts for sauna's were you can build your own. They didn't deliver to Ireland(were I'm from) at the time. I looked through youtube and people were making homemade sauna's using infrared bulbs and sitting in grow tents. I made this up and it works very well and costs a lot less. If people are short money it's worth looking into this method.
I am definitely going to do this! I've just started on a new strength-training regimen and high protein diet, let's see how I fare with some sauna treatments.

Hi Laura I’ve got a Healthmate infra red sauna that I’ve been using every day for a month followed by 20 mins yoga. My sleep has improved incredibly getting solid 7-7.30 hrs. Also getting light early morning. Feel much more positive. Cannot get the high temperatures in the infra red though 76degrees for 20 Mins. Thanks for videos. Really great!
I have a home infra-red, and it doesn't heat the air in the same way that steam & dry sauna's do. I wear a HR monitor all day & every workout, and the big surprise for me is the difference between morning (empty stomach) and post-workout impacts of the heat. It's great to do in the evening. Super clean feeling of sauna and shower, then cold bedroom. Sleep like a log.

In our country, we typically do once a week 3-4 short sessions at higher heat (>110'C) separated by short sessions of a cold plunge in water, shower, or snow, ans also body scrub and beating either branches, and drinking replenishing liquids, with the length of each heat session increasing over approx. 2-3 hrs total time. It is too hot to stay Iin the heat for 20-30 minutes without a break. At the end of the session, a roll in the snow or dousing with a bucket of cold water to finish the session. It feels amazing, and is not as difficult to tolerate the extreme heat.
i only have access to a sauna in spas or when i stay in an AirBnB that has a sauna in the building. I'm definitely going to try the growth hormone boosting one on a rainy day in September (my next AirBnB stay). As a doctor I loved your video and is factually accurate however infrared has been shown to damage skin causing ageing and pigmentation at high exposure so please use with caution.

I have a steam room in my house (part of the shower wet room etc) which I LOVE - I much prefer steam to sauna - breathing steam vs dry heat. Maintenance wise I think its easier to maintain a tiled room vs wooden sauna that gets wet. I do like both sauna and steam though!!

None I live in Australia and its summer here so its a sauna session here every day. In the heat than into air conditioning, back into the heat. etc. we can do this several times a day everyday. Lol
I’m lucky as there’s a spa round the corner that costs either £18 an entry or if you have gym membership it is free. It has a infrared sauna and large cold and plunge pool. I go minimum once a week. Makes such a difference to your mental health also.

I have been doing sauna after a work out for about seven months now. I just turned 50 and never felt better. I highly recommend it especially if you are lifting weights with the intention of gaining muscle. Not sure I would advise laying down as the lady on this video as you will find your head empties of blood for a few seconds when you sit up.

I’ve been doing this routine for sauna 4 days a week but early in the morning, like 6:30; I swim for 10 - 15 min then go into the sauna for 10 min then plunge into ice water for a few seconds, the thing is I feel Incredible, should this be enough?
Two hours in one day! woah Not considered so many long sessions before. I normally stay in for like 10 mins then shower and into steam room and then shower and back into sauna for a few sessions. I think we know saunas are healthy just by how we feel. As always love your take on them. How you considered doing not scripted or just with notes, I bet it would still be great but yet spontaneous. Hey Conner, I was the same, just went in and out, here and there, but now I know the science, I stick to the timings (kind of) My update videos aren't scripted. These types are, otherwise I wouldn't know what I was saying and you'd still be watching a video I uploaded 2 weeks ago. It's important for me to get the facts and wording right. Years ago when I first went to a spa would go into the hot tub and then after a while, I got too hot and I would go out and take a cold shower and then I’d say I think I could do more in the hot tub then I would go into the hot tub and so I developedthe habit of doing pretty much this exact routine sometimes with a hot tub sometimes with the sauna cold showers and a cold tub just because it felt so incredibly good so I’m gonna try Huberman method and see how it goes. I just moved in the gym near me, has a sauna very close by.

It's like a giant human cool bag isn't it 😅 but so good, i was surprisedat how good it is for a folding sauna! It really does get hot and I also sweat buckets and so relaxing. I just bought a Myoice cold plunge last week, early days but I love that too! Would love a real wooden sauna and better cold plunge but they both do the job for now 😊❤

I want to try the GH regime but my infrared sauna only sets up to 167 F. I wonder if there is a GH protocol for infrared saunas since they are a bit different
I'm shocked at the extremely high temperatures. I have a built-in infra red sauna in my home and it does not go over 130 degrees F. I spend 30 minutes in it and become extremely heated. I can't imagine staying in a a hotter temperature.
From my experience, infrared and traditional saunas heat the body very differently. Infrared (only from what I have had) has a lower temperature but has a deeper heat if that makes sense?
An infrared sauna heats your body directly rather than heating the air around you. You're absolutely right, the average infrared sauna temperature is between 120-140 degrees Fahrenheit, while the average traditional sauna temperature is 150-190 degrees Fahrenheit. No system is better than the other one when it comes to health benefits, studies have concluded. Infrared saunas cost less to run and heat up faster. Enjoy your infrared sessions (*insert envious sigh*). :-)
Me too! My IR sauna has a maximum setting of 65dC and 30 minutes at that temp is all I can take. To take my mind off the mental torment I set up my laptop outside the glass door and watch a movie.
Wow! 3kg of extra muscle through your new training and eating habits is incredible. I'm so impressed! Im wondering if hot baths would have a similar (if, perhaps, reduced) effect on HGH as sauna use. I recall that, after I'd been ill in bed with covid, i had a compulsion to take hot baths twice a day. Later, i read that hot baths can activate the immune response by increasing body temp. I wish you were our Health Minister. You'd get to the bottom of the reason(s) for our current 22% increase in all-cause mortality in a flash!

When I was a child we had a pool and log sauna in our back yard. There were days when we (me and my sister) would swim and play and go warm up in the sauna and do it even 7 hours. That was like the maximum. Nowadays it's usually about 30-45 min total. And we definitely do not have a clock that we follow as the whole idea is to listen to your own body and it's needs. I think Huberman needs to visit Finland and learn from us experts on this one. Don't try to push it with the heat in sauna, go out when you want, cool down and repeat 2-3 times. Don't overdo it. And remember that most Finns do not take cold showers, roll in snow or swim in ice water, that's ofter overexagerated because it sound dramatic and exotic. I never go to swim in icy lake or roll in snow! I like to go to mild and moist sauna 60 C and throw löyly in order to keep it moist.
you heard correct! But, I had a lot to gain and I was so low, then threw myself in gung-ho and the body produced, thankfully, I've been working bloody hard 😅
I use "banya" (it has lots of steam), once a week, with temperatures around 70-80 (it's crazy hot). Be careful guys, you need to be patient with your condition 🙏 And I prefer cold baths every second day. 😅
A great question and one I wish I had put in the video but forgot. I let my friend use my sauna blanket for the last few months as she was training to run the MDS (an ultra marathon across the desert) and the blanket helped her heat acclimatise. That's why I got the tent as fight have the blanket. But I think the blanket would have worked too.
I'm Finnish and have dysautonomia/pots in my family. Sauna is like exercise to your heart and nervous systrm so it's usually not very good when dealing with pots. It can make symptoms worse. If you try it, take it very carefully with mild heat (55-60 C) for just a short time and drink eletrolytes or salt water before and after. Do not mix with the other extreme that is do not take a very cold shower, as that too can mess the nervous system and heart. Be kind to your body, dysautonomia and sauna don't go well together.

Check out Matt justice on you tube he has great content on infrared saunas, avoid ALL BIG BOX STORE SAUNAS BECAUSE THEY ARE BUILT WITH TOXIC GLUES ECT. He recommends radiant health which is what I bought 2 person, and clear light also. These have little to non electromagnetic fields which you need to avoid. Hope this helps

The sauna blanket I had/have gets very hot and think it would be near those temperatures, therefore would get the same benefits. I let my friend use my blanket as she was training for a desert ultramarathon, which is why I didn't use it in this video. I will be making a video about my eating plan in several weeks. My mate had an infra red sauna installed about 5 yrs ago for about 3.5k. It is different to normal saunas as only you get hot and not your jewelry or book etc. also it only used a 13 amp fuse so cant cost much to run.
I used to have an infrared sauna but had to sell it because it was too big. I really liked it. So cheap to run too. But not sure they get hot enough to tick the temperatures from this video 🤔
Those results are really impressive, Laura, 3kg of muscle in 3 months. I'm definitely going to do the 4x 30 mins sauna sessions each week on my rest day. I can track my body comp on Boditrax machine at the gym with increasing strength training and protein, so I'll report back in 3 months! I'm excited! 😅 I wonder if using the cold plunge for the 5 min rest between 30 min sauna sessions would have increased benefit? Or maybe that would require extra time for core body temp to heat up sufficiently in the sauna...🤔
I hope it works for you Joanne. Something to note was I had such low muscle mass to start so it has been a steep increase - perhaps beginner gains some might call it. I'm working body hard in the gym each session too. Phil calls it 'ferocious' so that is what I do. I look forward to hearing your results! Yeah, I’m wondering the same. My gym has both, so I like to do 5-6 mins in cold plunge between 20ish minute sauna sits. This is the first I’ve heard about the protocols for boosting growth hormones though! Great stuff. I’ll definitely be more deliberate about the timing now.

I spend over 3 -6 hrs in a suana alomst every day for 20+ yrs. I am obsessed with saunas. Never had a problem to this day 50yrs old now

None I live in Australia and its summer here so its a sauna session here every day. In the heat than into air conditioning, back into the heat. etc. we can do this several times a day everyday. Lol

I’m lucky as there’s a spa round the corner that costs either £18 an entry or if you have gym membership it is free. It has a infrared sauna and large cold and plunge pool. I go minimum once a week. Makes such a difference to your mental health also.

I have been doing sauna after a work out for about seven months now. I just turned 50 and never felt better. I highly recommend it especially if you are lifting weights with the intention of gaining muscle. Not sure I would advise laying down as the lady on this video as you will find your head empties of blood for a few seconds when you sit up.

I am concerned about out-gassing from the undoubtedly toxic materials from which these tents or sauna blankets are made. Has anyone been able to research this issue and find reliable reports regarding this? I have been looking without results.

I’ve been doing this routine for sauna 4 days a week but early in the morning, like 6:30; I swim for 10 - 15 min then go into the sauna for 10 min then plunge into ice water for a few seconds, the thing is I feel Incredible, should this be enough?
Two hours in one day! woah Not considered so many long sessions before. I normally stay in for like 10 mins then shower and into steam room and then shower and back into sauna for a few sessions. I think we know saunas are healthy just by how we feel. As always love your take on them. How you considered doing not scripted or just with notes, I bet it would still be great but yet spontaneous. Just a thought. Love your Mum she seems real fun.

My update videos aren't scripted. These types are, otherwise I wouldn't know what I was saying and you'd still be watching a video I uploaded 2 weeks ago. It's important for me to get the facts and wording right.

@@connerhughes1435 FRom what I have heard as long as the same temperature. I tend not to be able to stay in for as long though for some reason, so opt for sauna.

Similar to the tent, I just got an infrared sauna blanket which I like a lot, but I do crave the traditional cedar steam sauna.

Years ago when I first went to a spa would go into the hot tub and then after a while, I got too hot and I would go out and take a cold shower and then I’d say I think I could do more in the hot tub then I would go into the hot tub and so I developedthe habit of doing pretty much this exact routine sometimes with a hot tub sometimes with the sauna cold showers and a cold tub just because it felt so incredibly good so I’m gonna try Huberman method and see how it goes. I just moved in the gym near me, has a sauna very close by.
Laura I absolutely love your videos, always so helpful, interesting and relatable - keep going 💪 I have the exact blue Firzone sauna you have for about a year now! It's like a giant human cool bag isn't it 😅 but so good, i was surprisedat how good it is for a folding sauna! It really does get hot and I also sweat buckets and so relaxing. I just bought a Myoice cold plunge last week, early days but I love that too! Would love a real wooden sauna and better cold plunge but they both do the job for now 😊❤

I do 60c for 10min, then shower to wash off sweet, drop in pool 20c to cool down, then 60c sauna fro another 5min.

This was really interesting Laura thank you. Have you researched when your trainings should be in relation to the ⬆️ in growth hormone? I’m interested to know how long those increases last for and when it is best to train to take advantage of them but I don’t want to go down the rabbit hole by doing the research 😂

I'm shocked at the extremely high temperatures. I have a built-in infra red sauna in my home and it does not go over 130 degrees F. I spend 30 minutes in it and become extremely heated. I can't imagine staying in a a hotter temperature.
From my experience, infrared and traditional saunas heat the body very differently.
Infrared (only from what I have had) has a lower temperature but has a deeper heat if that makes sense?
An infrared sauna heats your body directly rather than heating the air around you. You're absolutely right, the average infrared sauna temperature is between 120-140 degrees Fahrenheit, while the average traditional sauna temperature is 150-190 degrees Fahrenheit. No system is better than the other one when it comes to health benefits, studies have concluded. Infrared saunas cost less to run and heat up faster. Enjoy your infrared sessions (*insert envious sigh*). :-)
Me too! My IR sauna has a maximum setting of 65dC and 30 minutes at that temp is all I can take. To take my mind off the mental torment I set up my laptop outside the glass door and watch a movie.

Im wondering if hot baths would have a similar (if, perhaps, reduced) effect on HGH as sauna use. I recall that, after I'd been ill in bed with covid, i had a compulsion to take hot baths twice a day. Later, i read that hot baths can activate the immune response by increasing body temp.
I wish you were our Health Minister. You'd get to the bottom of the reason(s) for our current 22% increase in all-cause mortality in a flash!
in the 80s we had a sauna at home (Germany) in the winter we would all run outside & roll in the snow to cool down, naked of course 😂

When I was a child we had a pool and log sauna in our back yard. There were days when we (me and my sister) would swim and play and go warm up in the sauna and do it even 7 hours. That was like the maximum. Nowadays it's usually about 30-45 min total. And we definitely do not have a clock that we follow as the whole idea is to listen to your own body and it's needs. I think Huberman needs to visit Finland and learn from us experts on this one. Don't try to push it with the heat in sauna, go out when you want, cool down and repeat 2-3 times. Don't overdo it. And remember that most Finns do not take cold showers, roll in snow or swim in ice water, that's ofter overexagerated because it sound dramatic and exotic. I never go to swim in icy lake or roll in snow! I like to go to mild and moist sauna 60 C and throw löyly in order to keep it moist.

I use "banya" (it has lots of steam), once a week, with temperatures around 70-80 (it's crazy hot). Be careful guys, you need to be patient with your condition 🙏
And I prefer cold baths every second day. 😅

A great question and one I wish I had put in the video but forgot. I let my friend use my sauna blanket for the last few months as she was training to run the MDS (an ultra marathon across the desert) and the blanket helped her heat acclimatise. That's why I got the tent as fight have the blanket.
But I think the blanket would have worked too.
I wonder how this therapy would work if you have POTS/ Dysautonomia and small fiber neuropathy that includes heat intolerance ?
I'm Finnish and have dysautonomia/pots in my family. Sauna is like exercise to your heart and nervous systrm so it's usually not very good when dealing with pots. It can make symptoms worse. If you try it, take it very carefully with mild heat (55-60 C) for just a short time and drink eletrolytes or salt water before and after. Do not mix with the other extreme that is do not take a very cold shower, as that too can mess the nervous system and heart. Be kind to your body, dysautonomia and sauna don't go well together.

@@LauraTryUK The room temperature is around 38 C. They make the room very humid which is different from Sauna.
My problem is finding a sauna I can afford that gets hot enough. Amazon has many portable saunas but they don't reach the necessary temperature range.
Check out Matt justice on you tube he has great content on infrared saunas, avoid ALL BIG BOX STORE SAUNAS BECAUSE THEY ARE BUILT WITH TOXIC GLUES ECT. He recommends radiant health which is what I bought 2 person, and clear light also. These have little to non electromagnetic fields which you need to avoid. Hope this helps

I know you can only go off of your experience, but in your unprofessional opinion, do you think the sauna blankets can achieve the same, even if on a smaller scale? Curious about your thoughts! I'd also love to hear more about how you're eating, if you're open to sharing. I'm trying to prioritize getting more protein, so recipe ideas and framework for grocery shopping would be very interesting to me. :)
The sauna blanket I had/have gets very hot and think it would be near those temperatures, therefore would get the same benefits.
I let my friend use my blanket as she was training for a desert ultramarathon, which is why I didn't use it in this video.

My mate had an infra red sauna installed about 5 yrs ago for about 3.5k. It is different to normal saunas as only you get hot and not your jewelry or book etc. also it only used a 13 amp fuse so cant cost much to run.
I used to have an infrared sauna but had to sell it because it was too big. I really liked it. So cheap to run too. But not sure they get hot enough to tick the temperatures from this video 🤔

Those results are really impressive, Laura, 3kg of muscle in 3 months. I'm definitely going to do the 4x 30 mins sauna sessions each week on my rest day. I can track my body comp on Boditrax machine at the gym with increasing strength training and protein, so I'll report back in 3 months! I'm excited! 😅 I wonder if using the cold plunge for the 5 min rest between 30 min sauna sessions would have increased benefit? Or maybe that would require extra time for core body temp to heat up sufficiently in the sauna...🤔

Something to note was I had such low muscle mass to start so it has been a steep increase - perhaps beginner gains some might call it. I'm working body hard in the gym each session too. Phil calls it 'ferocious' so that is what I do.

Yeah, I’m wondering the same. My gym has both, so I like to do 5-6 mins in cold plunge between 20ish minute sauna sits. This is the first I’ve heard about the protocols for boosting growth hormones though! Great stuff. I’ll definitely be more deliberate about the timing now.
