Is the Okinawan language different from Japanese? Your counting is a bit different from what I used to in Judo. It was: Ich, Ni, San, Chi, Go (so far the same, of course,) Roku, Sichi, Achi, Kyu, Ju. Are we using two variations of Japanese? Your teaching style is perfect for beginners, clear, easy to follow, just perfect in my opinion. Goju-Ryu Karate is closer to the traditional Chinese martial arts, am I right? Thank you!
Hello! Yes, there is a definite Okinawan influence on our counting! And I know it also happens in the dan grades as well - seventh dan is always nana dan, not Sichi dan. Okinawan martial arts have clear roots in China, as Okinawa was a crossroads for Chinese and Japanese trade, and the influence of the 36 families from China can be felt in Okinawa. Very good and instructive video to reactivate Karate-knowledge after years of non-practice. As it is I used to train Shotokan-Karate when I was a youngster and kept up with it until my mid-twenties. Then I had a very hard accident with my right knee so that it would not work as well as before anymore. However, I started a new training in Wing Tsun and there I realized how valuable all my previous knowledge from Shotokan was. Some months later (I already have an intermediate level of Wing Tsun now) I heard our Sifu (Chinese word for "Sensei") say the following: "depending on your moving habits or your previous knowledge of other martial arts each and every one of you will build up another individual style of Wing Tsun. Those who did Karate in the past will be able to understand movements and techniques another way than people who never attended a course in self-defense before. Judokas or wrestlers will practice another form of Wing Tsun than people coming from Karate or Tae Kwon Do." Actually I understood what he meant: "Every movement (turn, hip-vibration) or technique (punch, kick, block etc.) you learn is a PLUS for your capacity to defend yourself. So I re-started to have a look at Karate again, checked the principles of each technique I recalled and...voilà! There are no limits to combine techniques, methods (e.g. Ka Kie, Chi-Sao, Kihon-Ippon Kumite...). It's a whole universe opening up in front of me! Marvelous!

Her: *looks to see how dirty her feet are* Oh, no! 😆 I have a new little kohai I'm going to be teaching, and she's chosen karate as her hard style. It's a 150-mile trip to her home, so I appreciate this video to get her started on some basic kata. She's very enthusiastic, focused, and determined -- something every sensei loves to see. Thank you for making this video.
Ah, what a splendid message to receive! What a special kouhai - she sounds like the coolest and best student already 💪 please do send her my regards, and that I wish her all the best for her journey. It sounds like she's going to go far, especially with a Sensei like you 🙇🏻♀️
I've never had the chance to do martial arts, but my niece and nephew have had training, and I have seen so many shows that have people using it in them and I always want to try by the influence of those shows, I just don't know what the differences are with everything of all those kinds of martial arts.
The funny thing is that every time there is a new season of Cobra Kai, we get more students! Can't underestimate the influence of those shows. You are right that there are so many martial arts. They mostly have the same goal - self defence and self-improvement - but lots of different ways to get there. Some have weapons, some have only strikes, some are about tradition, others not. But it might be worth breaking it down in a separate video. Hmm... Thank you for your comment and for taking the time to watch 🌺
Hi Michael, That's a great idea! Doing basics as a warm-up is always a good idea - not only does it get the muscles going, but lays down vital muscle memory as well. Thank you for watching and commenting - much appreciated :)

Have you both got your a.m. coffee in hand;)? A LAPEL MIC! Awesome, and, what a difference such a small piece of tech can make! In all seriousness....the video was crystal clear. Nice! So, You are correct, I believe, that we can always benefit, no matter the age, or level of skill we have acquired, to revisit the basics of our chosen art regularly, even so far as to break them down into their most elemental parts. Its fun and humorous to see how your dojo breaks down the separate movements for the kids, as well, for them to to more easily absorb. I really like that approach. And, Zoe, Sensei, glad to see that you get opportunities to be in these videos as well, as you're just as concise (but with your own style;) in your tutorials as is Jagger, Sensei;). Btw, I just refer to your first name, so as not to confuse you as to who it is I'm referring/addressing. I hope that is not rude of me to do. LMK. Thank you for your channel's informative sharing, as always. Have a great weekend!
Yay, Mr Fisher is here! Coffee at the ready. We really should have invested in the lapel mic 35 videos ago 😅 it was a $20 buy that will make all the difference. So glad you noticed and liked it! Teaching kids comes easier to me than adults - adults get in their own way more often, and feel that steep learning curve more keenly. And while I may be able to explain things using metaphors etc to them, they are also much more self-conscious about their mistakes. Love sharing how we do things in our dojo, to give back something to the karate world which has traditionally given us all so much, so freely. While there are gatekeepers, it is easier now than ever to grow and improve as a wider community, and damn that's an awesome thing. This small, but kind and invested group of karate friends we have here on YT is the best thing to come out of lockdown. Of course you can use my first name, good sir! My double-barrelled surname is a mouthful, and everyone calls Ché 'Jagger' mostly because Sensei Chinen started calling him that in the 90s, and it stuck 🤣 I will definitely do a video more often than every 2 months - slowly getting over my own imposter syndrome. It takes time 😊 As always, thank you so much for the kind words and feedback - always a delight to hear from you 🙇🏻♀️🙇🏻♀️🙇🏻♀️
So it takes about 5-8 years normally to get a black belt, depending on how regularly you train. Our belt colours go like this: white yellow orange green blue purple brown black There are stripes in between, and it depends on your age how quickly you progress through the belts.

Hello! So our karate style draws its roots from White Crane, a style of Kung Fu in Fuijan province. There may be some historical overlap in some of the more circular movements, but Goju Ryu is an Okinawan style, which means it has elements from many, many different roots :)
Hello, So in our style, there is only one jumping kick, and it is in our very last kata (Suparinpei), so it isn't really beginner material. Thank you for watching and commenting!
Shotokan and Goju Ryu share 80% of the basics, but our kata are very different! I would love to learn more Shotokan kata, I think they are beautiful. Thank you for watching my little video! Best, Zoë

I did Shotokan Karate in the 80's and got to almost Black Belt. I am in my 60's now but feel drawn to start retraining in my own at home. I think it will help with the Fibromyalgia I was diagnosed with in 2019. Your moves seems similar to Shotokan. I do have severe arthritis in my knees from injuries (not Karate) I can do your moves so far and kicks, but low stances may be a problem. Low stances are used in Shotokan. I would be grateful for any advice. Interesting information about brain integration for people with brain neuro issues Thanks 😊
Hello! Thank you so much for taking the time to watch, and to send such thoughtful feedback. It is never too late to start again, and I am so grateful to be part of your renewed karate journey. Shotokan and Goju Ryu share the basics, but diverge dramatically in the kata. We have 12, and they are very different from Shotokan's 30+ kata. As for low stances - I actually have a hip issue that prevents me from doing the low stances properly. So I do them as low as I safely can. Gichin Funakoshi wrote that stances are for beginners - as we evolve, low stances aren't as important as natural kamae. I would never expect a student with your age and mobility issues to have low stances - just that you can do the techniques to the best of your ability. It was also Funakoshi who wrote 'spirit first, technique second'. Karate is meant to be for everyone, which means it naturally adapts to the practitioner. Unlike other styles that demand a certain base level of able-bodiedness, karate adapts to you, and an instructor keeps that in mind during training, grading, fighting etc. I look forward to hearing from you again! Best wishes, Zoë

Great video.....already subscribed.....when i was younger i did Shito-ry u karate up to 8 Kyu
Thanks for the sub! I hope you are continuing your karate journey 🥋
Could this also be used for warm-ups when I start practicing the Katas? or should I do a different warm up before this exercise?
Hi Michael,
That's a great idea! Doing basics as a warm-up is always a good idea - not only does it get the muscles going, but lays down vital muscle memory as well.
Thank you for watching and commenting - much appreciated :)
it's amazing skills for new beginners like me, thank you@sensei fresh recaps
Ah, I am so happy to hear that my little video is helpful! Thank you so much for watching and commenting, we really appreciate it 🙏
What is the name of this type of karate? + Is there a continuation of this type of karate? Can you send me the link to the continuation?

My double-barrelled surname is a mouthful, and everyone calls Ché 'Jagger' mostly because Sensei Chinen started calling him that in the 90s, and it stuck 🤣
I will definitely do a video more often than every 2 months - slowly getting over my own imposter syndrome. It takes time 😊
As always, thank you so much for the kind words and feedback - always a delight to hear from you 🙇🏻♀️🙇🏻♀️🙇🏻♀️
Your teaching methods are absolutely amazing👏. And much appreciated to the hardwork you put into this
Thank You
We work hard at trying to improve how we approach teaching, martial concepts, and karate in general, every generation is a little different.
Wow Great its very helpful for me Thank you 😊🥰🤩
So glad it is helpful! I have done a more recent, up to date one here: th-cam.com/video/uKxcGiISJI4/w-d-xo.html

and I want to know about the black belt white belt bcz I don't know about these things 🥺🥺🥺
So it takes about 5-8 years normally to get a black belt, depending on how regularly you train. Our belt colours go like this:
white
yellow
orange
green
blue
purple
brown
black
There are stripes in between, and it depends on your age how quickly you progress through the belts.
Good & tight taknic

I totally remember my first fight in karate i pouches my enemies in the face and leg and after that i get disqualified
😂😂😂😂
Please put out more teaching videos like this!
Ah, thank you! Working on the next one, just for stances in Goju Ryu 🙇🏻♀️
Nice to see you on video Sensi. Loved it. Thank you for your hard work. No thanks need. It benifits me also in my worksiut. 😘❤️

This is the best lesson I've found. I just started Karate at the ripe age of 41. Thanks for breaking down the fundamentals so well.
Glad it was helpful! And while it can be too early to start karate, it is definitely never too late!
Thank you for this lovely comment, I'm so glad my video was helpful 😁
My question is are there any age limitations to Biggin karate?
No age limits! We have started students in their 50s, 60s and 70s! It's not too late, and no one is too old ♥️
Excellent. The use of rhymes is a excellent teaching tool at any age!
Love a good learning tool! Thank you for watching and commenting - always appreciated 🙇🏻♀️
Nice presentation , thanks a lot for this valuable footage
Keep up and be blessed 🌼🌻👍
Ah, thank you so very much for these kind words! Be well 🪷

Sensei, when you jumped, I thought that you’re going to do a spinning back kick, but it turned out so different 😅😅
Maybe one day! But only when I'm sure I won't make a tit of myself on the internet 😂
@@GojuRyuKarateCentre you’re doing good🥋👍🏻I just watched too much van damme 😅😅
Just started Goju Ryu at the good young age of 61....... Very helpful video..... From a Fellow Greek in Dagenham East London UK.
Yasou!
So glad my little video is helpful - that's all I ever hope for it :) And its lovely to hear from someone starting, at any age. It's like that saying - the best time to plant a cherry tree was 20 years ago. The next best time is now :)
Thank you for taking the time to watch and comment, Paul - much appreciated :)
well illustrated especially in slow version
Thank you so much!
Hai Sensei, Thanks for this. Kindly do a video of how to start and end a formal Goju Ryu class.
What a great idea for a video! We will action it soon

My gym went bust so I am working through your videos, first real Karate since 1978 thanks a lot!
Ah, that is so kind of you to say, Charles! Hopefully another dojo will come your way and you can continue the journey. If we can help even a little bit, then we're super happy :)
Quick suggestion - you should link to the relevant videos you talk about in this video while you note them :)
Hello! Normally there are at least the cards that pop up in the corner, but we haven't got the option to add overlays yet - one day when we are a big channel! Just a baby Goju channel for now - we just passed the one year mark :)
This is another great video GRKC. Just revisited it again 2 months after you posted it.

You are so welcome, Priya! Thank you for taking the time to watch and comment :) Apologies for the late reply - we're working though the comment backlog >.
is this like wing chun ? whats the difference between them ?
Hello!
So our karate style draws its roots from White Crane, a style of Kung Fu in Fuijan province. There may be some historical overlap in some of the more circular movements, but Goju Ryu is an Okinawan style, which means it has elements from many, many different roots :)
Why don't you kick when you jump
Hello,
So in our style, there is only one jumping kick, and it is in our very last kata (Suparinpei), so it isn't really beginner material. Thank you for watching and commenting!
I want to join m,am from Pakistan panjab
Hello!
We are all the way in South Africa, but our videos will always be free 👏
this is very similar to shotokan style karate
Shotokan and Goju Ryu share 80% of the basics, but our kata are very different! I would love to learn more Shotokan kata, I think they are beautiful.
Thank you for watching my little video!

for you this 20 min but this is enough material to train for the summer

thanks for encouragement, I moved from Ukrainian capital to rural area, there is nothing to do in the villa ge, so I've got an idea to learn karate by myself but your video and this Ukrainian video th-cam.com/video/ow54bw_Pq8U/w-d-xo.html is the only what I've found for beginners, there is no much educational karate content only professional performances. So you are doing great actually giving the educational material. @@GojuRyuKarateCentre
Thank you for the very easy to follow tutorial, while still being technically precise! Your teaching ability is equal to your high level of skills in demonstrating the techniques. ✌🥋👊

My pleasure 😊thank you for your lovely comment, and for taking the time to watch my little video 🙌
I would watch this wonderful video just to listen to Zoe's British accent! It would almost be worth traveling to another continent to take in-person lessons- excellent presentation, rhythm, knowledge, skill... ! I immediately noticed the resemblence to Uma Thurman in the "Kill Bill" movies (in the U.S.). I studied Taekwondo for several years; attention turned now to Karate. Thank you for the video, very well done! [Please open a dojo in the U.S.!]
My blushes, sir! I'm so sorry to be replying so late - I'm getting back into the swing of content management and creation, and we're also adding online classes! Ah, thank you so much for watching and commenting!
I did Shotokan Karate in the 80's and got to almost Black Belt.
I am in my 60's now but feel drawn to start retraining in my own at home. I think it will help with the Fibromyalgia I was diagnosed with in 2019.
Your moves seems similar to Shotokan. I do have severe arthritis in my knees from injuries (not Karate)
I can do your moves so far and kicks, but low stances may be a problem. Low stances are used in Shotokan.
I would be grateful for any advice. Interesting information about brain integration for people with brain neuro issues
Thanks 😊
Best wishes,
Zoë
